Sri Vasishtha said: For the one who always remains established in everything, who stays together with all things, and even while delighting in every action still knows how the mind should be kept,
na saktamiha ceṣṭāsu na cintāsu na vastuṣu | nākāśe nāpyadho nāgre na dikṣu na latāsu ca || 2 ||
the mind is not attached to any activity here, nor to any thought, nor to any object; not in the sky, not below, not in front, not in the directions, not in the creepers,
na bhrūmadhye na nāsānte na muke na ca tārake | nāndhakāre na cābhāse na cāsmiinhṛdayāmbare || 4 ||
not between the eyebrows, not at the tip of the nose, not in the mouth, not in the pupil of the eye; not in darkness, not in any glow, not in this space within the heart,
na jāgrati na ca svapne na suṣupte na nirmale | nāsite na ca vā pītaraktādau śabale na ca || 5 ||
not in waking, not in dream, not in deep sleep, not in the stainless state; not in black, not in yellow or red and other colors, not in any spotted color,
na cale na sthire nādau na madhye netaratra ca | na dūre nāntike nāgre na padārthe na cātmani || 6 ||
not in the moving, not in the still, not at the start, not in the middle, not anywhere else; not far, not near, not ahead; not in any object, and not even in the self,
Let the mind rest only in pure awareness. Even while it still leans a little on something it perceives, let it remain everywhere as if without taste - its only true taste being the self.
Staying like this, free of all attachment, the living being becomes as good as not alive - whether he does all this everyday business or does not do it.
Even while doing nothing, such a living being still performs his actions, delighting only in his own self; and he never enters into any connection with the fruits of those actions - just as the sky never connects with the clouds that move through it.
Or else, letting go even of that small trace of something perceived, and becoming nothing but peaceful awareness, let the living being remain completely at peace within the self, like a glowing jewel.
nirvāṇamātmani gataḥ satatoditātmā jīvo'rucirvyavaharannapi rāmabhadra | no saṅgameti gatasaṅgatayā phalena karmodbhavena sahatīva ca dehabhāram || 12 ||
O Rama, the living being who has found peace within the self, whose awareness is forever awake, feels no craving even while carrying on worldly dealings. Because attachment has left him, he has no bond with the fruit born of action, and he carries the weight of his body only as if it were a burden.
