श्रीराम उवाच | कीदृशो भगवन्सङ्गः कथं बन्धाय वा नृणाम् | कश्च मोक्षाय कथितः कथं वैष चिकित्स्यते || १ ||

śrīrāma uvāca | kīdṛśo bhagavansaṅgaḥ kathaṃ bandhāya vā nṛṇām | kaśca mokṣāya kathitaḥ kathaṃ vaiṣa cikitsyate || 1 ||

English

Sri Rama said: What kind of association with the Lord is there? How does it lead to bondage or liberation for people? What is said to lead to liberation and how is it to be treated?

हिन्दी

श्री राम ने कहा: भगवान का संग कैसा होता है? यह लोगों के बंधन या मुक्ति के लिए कैसे होता है? मुक्ति के लिए क्या कहा जाता है और यह कैसे चिकित्सित किया जाता है?

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | देहदेहिविभागैकपरित्यागेन भावनात् | देहमात्रे तु विश्वासः सङ्गो बन्धार्ह उच्यते || २ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | dehaddehivibhāgaikaparityāgena bhāvanāt | dehamātre tu viśvāsaḥ saṅgo bandhārha ucyate || 2 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: The belief in the distinction between the body and the self, by giving up the notion of their oneness, is said to be the bondage-causing attachment.

हिन्दी

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: शरीर और आत्मा के भेद का विश्वास, उनकी एकता के विचार को त्यागकर, बंधन का कारण बनने वाला संग कहा जाता है।

अनन्तस्यात्मतत्त्वस्य सपर्यन्तत्वनिश्चये | यत्सुखार्थित्वमन्तः स सङ्गो बन्धार्ह उच्यते || ३ ||

anantasyātmatattvasya saparyantatvanniścaye | yatsukhārthitvamantaḥ sa saṅgo bandhārha ucyate || 3 ||

English

The belief in the limited nature of the infinite self, with the desire for happiness within, is said to be the bondage-causing attachment.

अनंत आत्मा की सीमित प्रकृति का विश्वास, जिसमें सुख की इच्छा हो, बंधन का कारण बनने वाला संग कहा जाता है।

सर्वमात्मेदमखिलं किं वाञ्छामि त्यजामि किम् | इत्यसङ्गस्थितिं विद्धि जीवन्मुक्ततनुस्थितिम् || ४ ||

sarvamātmedamakhilaṃ kiṃ vāñchāmi tyajāmi kim | ityasaṅgasthitiṃ viddhi jīvanmuktatanusthitim || 4 ||

English

Know the state of detachment, where one sees everything as the self, and asks, 'What do I desire? What do I renounce?' as the state of a liberated being.

हिन्दी

जानो कि जहाँ सब कुछ आत्मा है, और पूछो, 'मैं क्या चाहता हूँ? मैं क्या त्यागता हूँ?' यह असंग स्थिति मुक्त जीवन की स्थिति है।

नाहमस्मि न चान्योऽस्ति मा भवन्तु भवन्तु वा | सुखान्यसक्त इत्यन्तः कथ्यते मुक्तिभाङ्नरः || ५ ||

nāhamasmi na cānyo'sti mā bhavantu bhavantu vā | sukhānyasakta ityantaḥ kathyate muktibhāṅnaraḥ || 5 ||

English

One who is not attached to pleasures, thinking 'I am not, nor is there anyone else, let things be or not be,' is said to be a person shining with liberation.

हिन्दी

जो सुखों से असक्त है, और सोचता है, 'मैं नहीं हूँ, न ही कोई और है, चाहे हों या न हों,' वह मुक्ति से चमकता हुआ व्यक्ति कहलाता है।

नाभिनन्दति नैष्कर्म्यं न कर्मस्वनुषज्जते | सुसमो यः फलत्यागी सोऽसंसक्त इति स्मृतः || ६ ||

nābhinandati naiṣkarmyaṃ na karmasvanuṣajjate | susamo yaḥ phalatyāgī so'saṃsakta iti smṛtaḥ || 6 ||

English

One who neither rejoices in inaction nor is attached to action, who is equanimous and renounces the fruits of action, is said to be unattached.

हिन्दी

जो न तो अकर्मण्यता में आनंद लेता है न ही कर्मों में आसक्त होता है, जो समान रहता है और कर्मों के फलों का त्याग करता है, वह असंसक्त कहलाता है।

आत्मतत्त्वैकनिष्ठस्य हर्षामर्षवशं मनः | यस्य नायात्यसक्तोऽसौ जीवन्मुक्तः स कथ्यते || ७ ||

ātmatattvaikanṣṭhasya harṣāmarṣavaśaṃ manaḥ | yasya nāyātyasakto'sau jīvanmuktaḥ sa kathyate || 7 ||

English

One whose mind is not swayed by joy or sorrow, who is devoted to the truth of the self, is said to be liberated while living.

हिन्दी

जिसका मन हर्ष और अमर्ष के वश में नहीं होता, जो आत्मतत्त्व में एकनिष्ठ है, वह जीवन्मुक्त कहलाता है।

सर्वकर्मफलादीनां मनसैव न कर्मणा | निपुणं यः परित्यागी सोऽसंसक्त इति स्मृतः || ८ ||

sarvakarmaphalādīnāṃ manasaiva na karmaṇā | nipuṇaṃ yaḥ parityāgī so'saṃsakta iti smṛtaḥ || 8 ||

English

One who skillfully renounces the fruits of all actions with the mind, not by action, is said to be unattached.

हिन्दी

जो सभी कर्मों के फलों का मन से कुशलतापूर्वक त्याग करता है, न कि कर्मों से, वह असंसक्त कहलाता है।

असंसङ्गेन सकलाश्चेष्टा नाना विजृम्भिताः | चिकित्सिता भवन्तीह श्रेयः संपादयन्ति च || ९ ||

asaṃsaṅgena sakalāśceṣṭā nānā vijṛmbhitāḥ | cikitsitā bhavantīha śreyaḥ saṃpādayanti ca || 9 ||

English

Through detachment, all diverse activities become well-regulated and bring about the highest good.

हिन्दी

असंसक्ति से सभी विविध क्रियाएँ सुव्यवस्थित हो जाती हैं और परम कल्याण को प्राप्त कराती हैं।

संसक्तिवशतः सर्वे वितता दुःखराशयः | प्रयान्ति शतशाखत्वं श्वभ्रकण्टकवृक्षवत् || १० ||

saṃsaktivasaṭaḥ sarve vitatā duḥkharāśayaḥ | prayānti śataśākhatvaṃ śvabhrakaṇṭakavṛkṣavat || 10 ||

English

Due to attachment, all sorrows spread out and multiply like a tree with a hundred branches full of thorns.

हिन्दी

आसक्ति के कारण सभी दुःख फैलते हैं और सौ शाखाओं वाले काँटेदार पेड़ की तरह बढ़ते हैं।

रज्जुकृष्टघनघ्राणो यद्गत्या पथि गर्दभः | भारं वहति भीतात्मा तत्संसक्तिविजृम्भितम् || ११ ||

rajjukṛṣṭaghanaghrāṇo yadgatyā pathi gardabhaḥ | bhāraṃ vahati bhītātmā tatsaṃsaktivijṛmbhitam || 11 ||

English

A donkey, whose nose is pierced with a rope, carries a burden on the path with a fearful mind, due to its attachment.

हिन्दी

जिसकी नाक रस्सी से छेदी गई है, वह गधा डरे हुए मन से बोझ उठाता है, अपने आसक्ति के कारण।

शीतवातातपक्लेशमेकदेशनिषण्णया | तरुर्वहति यत्तन्वा तत्संसक्तिविजृम्भितम् || १२ ||

śītavātātapakleśamekadeśaniṣaṇṇayā | tarurvahati yattanvā tatsaṃsaktivijṛmbhitam || 12 ||

English

A tree, rooted in one place, endures the sufferings of cold, wind, and heat, due to its attachment.

हिन्दी

एक जगह जड़े हुए पेड़ को ठंड, हवा और गर्मी के कष्ट सहने पड़ते हैं, अपनी आसक्ति के कारण।

धराविवरनिर्मग्नो यत्कीटः पीडिताङ्गकः | क्षिणोति विकलः कालं तत्संसक्तिविजृम्भितम् || १३ ||

dharāvivaranirmagno yatkīṭaḥ pīḍitāṅgakaḥ | kṣiṇoti vikalaḥ kālaṃ tatsaṃsaktivijṛmbhitam || 13 ||

English

An insect, trapped in a hole in the ground, suffers with a weakened body, due to its attachment.

एक कीड़ा, जो धरती के छेद में फँसा हुआ है, अपने कमजोर शरीर के साथ पीड़ा भोगता है, अपनी आसक्ति के कारण।

क्षुत्क्षामकुक्षिः क्षपयत्यायुर्व्याघातभीरुधीः | पक्षी वृक्षशिखाशायी तत्संसक्तिविजृम्भितम् || १४ ||

kṣutkṣāmakukṣiḥ kṣapayatyāyurvyāghātabhīrudhīḥ | pakṣī vṛkṣaśikhāśāyī tatsaṃsaktivijṛmbhitam || 14 ||

English

A bird, perched on the top of a tree, wastes its life with a fearful mind due to hunger, due to its attachment.

एक पक्षी, जो पेड़ की शिखा पर बैठा है, भूख के कारण डरे हुए मन से अपना जीवन बर्बाद करता है, अपनी आसक्ति के कारण।

क्षुत्क्षामकुक्षिः क्षपयत्यायुर्व्याघातभीरुधीःपक्षी वृक्षशिखाशायी तत्संसक्तिविजृम्भितम् || १५ ||

kṣutkṣāmakukṣiḥ kṣapayatyāyurvyāghātabhīrudhīḥpakṣī vṛkṣaśikhāśāyī tatsaṃsaktivijṛmbhitam || 15 ||

English

Just as a bird, with a hungry belly, fearful of the tiger's roar, perches on the treetop and spends its life, so too is the attachment to worldly pleasures.

हिन्दी

जैसे एक पक्षी, जिसका पेट भूख से खाली है, बाघ की दहाड़ से डरकर पेड़ की चोटी पर बैठा हुआ अपना जीवन बिताता है, वैसे ही संसारिक भोगों की आसक्ति है।

कृमिकीटत्वमायान्ति जायमानाः पुनःपुनः | यदिमा जनता जीर्णास्तत्संसक्तिविजृम्भितम् || १६ ||

kṛmikīṭatvamāyānti jāyamānāḥ punaḥpunaḥ | yadimā janatā jīrṇāstatsaṃsaktivijṛmbhitam || 16 ||

English

People, being born again and again, become worms and insects due to their attachments.

हिन्दी

लोग, जो बार-बार जन्म लेते हैं, अपनी आसक्तियों के कारण कीड़े-मकोड़े बन जाते हैं।

उत्पत्त्योत्पत्त्य लीयन्ते तरङ्गिणि तरङ्गवत् | भूतानि यदनन्तानि तत्संसक्तिविजृम्भितम् || १७ ||

utpattyoutpattya līyante taraṅgiṇi taraṅgavat | bhūtāni yadanantāni tatsaṃsaktivijṛmbhitam || 17 ||

English

Just as waves arise and dissolve in the ocean, so do countless beings arise and dissolve in the cycle of existence.

हिन्दी

जैसे लहरें समुद्र में उठती और विलीन होती हैं, वैसे ही अनगिनत भूत संसार चक्र में उत्पन्न होते और विलीन होते हैं।

वीरुत्तृणदशां याता म्रियन्ते यत्पुनःपुनः | नरा विगतसंचारास्तत्संसक्तिविजृम्भितम् || १८ ||

vīruttṛṇadaśāṃ yātā mriyante yatpunaḥpunaḥ | narā vigatasaṃcārāstatsaṃsaktivijṛmbhitam || 18 ||

English

Just as grass and trees wither and die repeatedly, so do humans, devoid of proper conduct, die again and again in the cycle of existence.

हिन्दी

जैसे घास और पेड़ बार-बार सूखते और मरते हैं, वैसे ही उचित आचरण से रहित मनुष्य संसार चक्र में बार-बार मरते हैं।

रसातलरसायोगात्तृणगुल्मलतादयः | जनयन्ति यदाकारं तत्संसक्तिविजृम्भितम् || १९ ||

rasātalarasāyogāttṛṇagulmalatādayaḥ | janayanti yadākāraṃ tatsaṃsaktivijṛmbhitam || 19 ||

English

From the union of the earth's essence, grasses, shrubs, and creepers manifest their forms, which is an interconnected manifestation.

पृथ्वी के रस के संयोग से घास, झाड़ियाँ और लताएँ अपने रूप धारण करती हैं, जो कि एक अंतर्संबंधित अभिव्यक्ति है।

स्वानर्थान्तरसंकाशपदार्थशतसंकुला | यत्संसारनदी मत्ता तत्संसक्तिविजृम्भितम् || २० ||

svānarthāntarasaṃkāśapadārthaśatasaṃkulā | yatsaṃsāranadī matta tatsaṃsaktivijṛmbhitam || 20 ||

English

The river of worldly existence is filled with countless objects that appear to serve one's own interests, which is an interconnected manifestation.

संसार की नदी अपने स्वार्थ को पूरा करने वाले अनगिनत वस्तुओं से भरी हुई है, जो कि एक अंतर्संबंधित अभिव्यक्ति है।

संसक्तिर्द्विविधा प्रोक्ता वन्द्या वन्ध्या च राघव | वन्ध्या सर्वत्र मूढानां वन्द्या तत्त्वविदां निजा || २१ ||

saṃsaktirdvivdhā proktā vandyā vandhyā ca rāghava | vandhyā sarvatra mūḍhānāṃ vandyā tattvavidāṃ nijā || 21 ||

English

Attachment is said to be of two kinds, O Raghava: praiseworthy and blameworthy. The blameworthy is found everywhere among the ignorant, while the praiseworthy is inherent to the wise.

हिन्दी

संसक्ति दो प्रकार की कही गई है, हे राघव! वंध्या और वन्द्या। वंध्या सर्वत्र मूढ़ों में पाई जाती है, जबकि वन्द्या तत्त्वविदों की अपनी है।

आत्मतत्त्वावबोधेन हीना देहादिवस्तुजा | भूयः संसारसक्तिर्या दृढा वन्ध्येति कथ्यते || २२ ||

ātmatattvāvabodhena hīnā dehādivastujā | bhūyaḥ saṃsārasaktiryā dṛḍhā vandhyeti kathyate || 22 ||

English

Without the realization of the true nature of the self, the attachment to worldly objects and the body is considered strong and fruitless.

हिन्दी

आत्म के सच्चे स्वरूप के ज्ञान के बिना, शरीर और दुनियावी वस्तुओं की आसक्ति दृढ़ और निष्फल मानी जाती है।

आत्मतत्त्वावबोधेन सत्यभूतविवेकजा | वन्द्या हि कथ्यते सक्तिर्भूयः संसारवर्जिता || २३ ||

ātmatattvāvabodhena satyabhūtavivekajā | vandyā hi kathyate saktirbhūyaḥ saṃsāravarjitā || 23 ||

English

With the realization of the true nature of the self and the discrimination of truth, the attachment is considered worthy and free from the cycle of birth and death.

आत्म के सच्चे स्वरूप के ज्ञान और सत्य के विवेक से, आसक्ति योग्य और जन्म और मृत्यु के चक्र से मुक्त मानी जाती है।

शङ्खचक्रगदाहस्तो देवो विविधयेहया | वन्द्यसंसक्तिवशतः परिपाति जगत्त्रयम् || २४ ||

śaṅkhacakragadāhasto devo vividhayehayā | vandyasaṃsaktivaśataḥ paripāti jagattrayam || 24 ||

English

The divine being, holding the conch, discus, and mace, with various desires, protects the three worlds due to worthy attachment.

शंख, चक्र और गदा धारण करने वाला देवता, विविध इच्छाओं के साथ, योग्य आसक्ति के कारण तीनों लोकों की रक्षा करता है।

अनारतनिरालम्बं व्योम वर्त्मनि पान्थताम् | वन्द्यसंसक्तिवशतः करोति रविरन्वहम् || २५ ||

anāratanirālambaṃ vyoma vartmani pānthatām | vandyasaṃsaktivaśataḥ karoti raviranvaham || 25 ||

English

The sun, without any support, travels in the sky due to worthy attachment, continuously moving along its path.

हिन्दी

सूर्य, किसी सहारे के बिना, योग्य आसक्ति के कारण आकाश में निरंतर अपने मार्ग पर चलता रहता है।

महाकल्पसमाधानचिरकल्पितकल्पनम् | वन्द्यसंसक्तिवशतो ब्राह्मं स्फुरति वै वपुः || २६ ||

mahākalpasamādhānacirakalpitakalpanam | vandyasaṃsaktivaśato brāhmaṃ sphurati vai vapuḥ || 26 ||

English

The divine form of Brahma, which is the result of great aeons of meditation and long-conceived imagination, shines due to worthy attachment.

ब्रह्मा का दिव्य रूप, जो महान कल्पों की ध्यान और लंबे समय से कल्पित कल्पना का परिणाम है, योग्य आसक्ति के कारण चमकता है।

लीलया ललनालानलीनं भूतिविभूषितम् | वन्द्यसंसक्तिवशतः शरीरं शाङ्करं स्थितम् || २७ ||

līlayā lalanālānalīnaṃ bhūtivibhūṣitam | vandyasaṃsaktivaśataḥ śarīraṃ śāṅkaraṃ sthitam || 27 ||

English

By the power of divine attachment, the body adorned with the splendor of existence stands in the form of Shankara.

विज्ञानगतयः सिद्धा लोकपालास्तथेतरे | वन्द्यसंसक्तिवशतस्तिष्ठन्ति जगतोऽङ्गणे || २८ ||

vijñānagatayaḥ siddhā lokapālāstathaitare | vandyasaṃsaktivaśatastiṣṭhanti jagato'ṅgaṇe || 28 ||

English

The accomplished beings of knowledge and the guardians of the world, along with others, stand in the courtyard of the universe by the power of divine attachment.

ज्ञान के सिद्ध पुरुष और लोकपाल, अन्य लोगों के साथ, दिव्य आसक्ति की शक्ति से ब्रह्मांड के आंगन में खड़े हैं।

English

Another continuity of the world holds the multitude of bodily instruments, free from old age and death, by the power of divine attachment.

दूसरी ब्रह्मांड की संतति शरीर के यंत्रों की भीड़ को बूढ़ापे और मृत्यु से मुक्त दिव्य आसक्ति की शक्ति से धारण करती है।

मनः पतति भोगेषु गृध्रो मांसलवेष्विव | वन्द्यसंसक्तिवशतो व्यर्थया रम्यशङ्कया || ३० ||

manaḥ patati bhogeṣu gṛdhro māṃsalaveṣviva | vandyasaṃsaktivaśato vyarthayā ramyaśaṅkayā || 30 ||

English

The mind falls into pleasures like a vulture falls on pieces of meat, uselessly with charming suspicion, by the power of divine attachment.

हिन्दी

मन भोगों में गिरता है जैसे गिद्ध मांस के टुकड़ों पर गिरता है, दिव्य आसक्ति की शक्ति से व्यर्थ में मोहक संदेह के साथ।

संसक्तिवशतो वाति वायुर्भुवनकोटरे | पञ्चभूतानि तिष्ठन्ति वहतीयं जगत्स्थितिः || ३१ ||

saṃsaktivaśato vāti vāyurbhuvanakoṭare | pañcabhūtāni tiṣṭhanti vahatīyaṃ jagatssthitiḥ || 31 ||

English

By the power of attachment, the wind blows in the hollow of the world, and the five elements stand, carrying this stability of the universe.

हिन्दी

आसक्ति की शक्ति से, वायु ब्रह्मांड की खोखली में बहती है, और पांच भूत इस ब्रह्मांड की स्थिति को लेकर खड़े हैं।

divi devā bhuvi narāḥ pātāle bhogino'surāḥbrahmāṇḍodumbaraphale sphuranmaśakavatsthitāḥ || 32 ||

English

In heaven, there are gods; on earth, there are humans; in the underworld, there are demons enjoying pleasures. They are situated like insects in the fruit of the cosmic egg.

स्वर्ग में देवता हैं; पृथ्वी पर मनुष्य हैं; पाताल में भोग करने वाले असुर हैं। वे ब्रह्माण्ड के फल में कीड़ों की तरह स्थित हैं।

जायन्ते च म्रियन्ते च निपतन्त्युत्पतन्ति चभूतानि यदनन्तानि तरङ्गिणि तरङ्गवत् || ३३ ||

jāyante ca mriyante ca nipatantyutpatanti cabhūtāni yadanantāni taraṅgiṇi taraṅgavat || 33 ||

English

The elements are born, die, fall, and rise again, just like the endless waves of the ocean.

तत्व उत्पन्न होते हैं, मरते हैं, गिरते हैं, और फिर उठते हैं, जैसे समुद्र की अनंत लहरें।

The elements, manifested due to the power of association, dissolve again and again, becoming tasteless like the drops of water from a waterfall.

तत्व, संसक्ति के वश में प्रकट होने के कारण, बार-बार विलीन होते हैं, और जलप्रपात की बूंदों की तरह निरास हो जाते हैं।

परस्परनिगीर्णाङ्गा जनता जाड्यजर्जरासंभ्रान्ता प्रभ्रमत्यङ्ग शीर्णपर्णमिवाम्बरे || ३५ ||

parasparanigīrṇāṅgā janatā jāḍyajarjarāsaṃbhrāntā prabhramatyaṅga śīrṇaparṇamivāmvare || 35 ||

English

People, with their limbs entangled with each other, are confused and bewildered, wandering aimlessly like a withered leaf in the sky.

लोग, जिनके अंग एक-दूसरे से उलझे हुए हैं, भ्रमित और उलझे हुए हैं, आकाश में सूखी पत्ती की तरह बेमकसद भटकते हैं।

नक्षत्रचक्रं गगने द्रुमे मशकसंततिःस्फुरत्यावर्तवृत्त्यैव पातालेऽङ्ग जलौघवत् || ३६ ||

nakṣatracakraṃ gagane drume maśakasaṃtatiḥsphuratyāvartavṛttyaiva pātāle'ṅga jalaughavat || 36 ||

English

The constellation wheel in the sky, the line of ants on the tree, and the waves of water in the underworld all move in a circular motion.

आकाश में नक्षत्रों का चक्र, पेड़ पर चींटियों की पंक्ति और पाताल में जल की लहरें गोलाकार गति से चलती हैं।

पातोत्पातदशाजीर्णं कालबालककन्दुकम्| अद्यापि न जहातीन्दुर्जलमामलिनं वपुः || ३७ ||

pātotpātadaśājīrṇaṃ kālabālakakandukam| adyāpi na jahātīndurjalamāmalinaṃ vapuḥ || 37 ||

English

Even today, the moon does not abandon its blemished form, which is worn out by the state of calamities and is like a toy in the hands of time.

आज भी चन्द्रमा अपने कलंकित रूप को नहीं छोड़ता, जो विपत्तियों की दशा से थका हुआ है और समय के हाथों में एक खिलौना है।

nānāpārayugāvartaduḥkhālokanakarkaśam| na lunāti manaḥkhaṇḍaṃ duḥkhigīrvāṇamaṇḍalam || 38 ||

The harsh gaze of various cycles of suffering does not diminish the fragmented mind, which is a circle of sorrowful lamentations.
