evaṃ tau kuśalapraśnaṃ kṛtavantau parasparamkālenāsādya vimalaṃ jñānaṃ mokṣaṃ tato gatau || 1 ||

English

Thus, they both inquired about each other's well-being. Over time, having attained pure knowledge, they attained liberation.

2

tato vacmi mahābāho yathā jñānetarā gatiḥnāsti saṃsārataraṇe pāśabandhasya cetasaḥ || 2 ||

English

Therefore, O mighty-armed one, I declare that there is no other path to cross the ocean of worldly existence except through knowledge. The mind bound by fetters cannot cross it.

idaṃ bhavyamaterduḥkhamanantamapi pelavamkukhagasyā'taro'mbhodhiḥ sarpārergoṣpadāyate || 3 ||

English

This sorrow, though vast, is insignificant to the wise. Just as a small bird cannot cross the vast ocean, so too the mind bound by desires cannot cross the ocean of worldly existence.

dehātītā mahātmānaścinmātrasvātmani sthitāḥdūrāddehaṃ samīkṣante prekṣako janatāmiva || 4 ||

English

The great souls who have transcended the body and are established in the pure consciousness of the self, observe the body from a distance, like an onlooker observing people.

dehe duḥkhātisaṃkṣubdhe kā naḥ kṣatirupasthitārathe vidhurite bhagne sāratheḥ keva khaṇḍanā || 5 ||

English

When the body is greatly disturbed by sorrow, what harm can come to us? Just as when the chariot is broken, what is the use of the charioteer?

manasi kṣubdhatāṃ yāte cittvasyaāṅga kimāgatam | taraṅgajalasaṃtāne vaiparītyaṃ kimambudheḥ || 6 ||

English

When the mind is disturbed, what happens to the body? What is the contradiction in the ocean of waves?

ke'bhavanpayasāṃ haṃsāḥ payasāmupalāśca ke | kāḥ śilāḥ kila dārūṇāṃ ke bhogāḥ paramātmanaḥ || 7 ||

English

Who are the swans among the waters? Who are the stones among the woods? What are the enjoyments of the Supreme Self?

saṃbandhaḥ ka iva śrīman śailāparasamudrayoḥ | antare girisaṃbādhe kaśca cittatattvabandhayoḥ || 8 ||

English

What is the relationship, O noble one, between the mountain and the ocean? What is the connection between the mind and the essence of consciousness in the midst of the mountain's obstruction?

apyutsango hyamānāni padmāni saridambhasām | kāni nāma bhavantīha śarīrāṇi tathātmanaḥ || 9 ||

English

10

saṃghaṭṭātkāṣṭhapayasoryathottuṅgāḥ kaṇādayaḥ | dehātmanoḥ samāyogāttathaitāścittavṛttayaḥ || 10 ||

English

Just as sparks arise from the friction of wood and water, so do these mental states arise from the union of the body and the self.

saṃbandhāddārupayasāṃ pratibimbāni dāruṇaḥ | yathā payasi lakṣyante śarīrāṇi tathātmani || 11 ||

English

Just as reflections of trees are seen in water, similarly, bodies are seen in the Self.

yathā darpaṇavīcyādau pratibimbāni vastutaḥ | nāsatyāni ca satyāni śarīrāṇi tathātmanaḥ || 12 ||

English

Just as reflections in a mirror or a painting are not real but appear real, similarly, the bodies of the Self are not real but appear real.

dāruvāryupalāsphoṭe duḥkhitā na yathā kvacit | saṃyukteṣu viyukteṣu na tathā pañcasu kṣatiḥ || 13 ||

English

Just as there is no sorrow when a wooden door or a stone is broken, similarly, there is no harm to the five elements when they are united or separated.

dārusanśleṣitāttoyātkampśabdādayo yathā | prajāyante tathaivāsmāddehāccitparibodhitāt || 14 ||

English

Just as vibrations and sounds arise from water contained in a wooden vessel, similarly, various experiences arise from the body illuminated by consciousness.

na śuddhajaḍayoretāḥ saṃvidaściccharīrayoḥ | etā hyajñānamātrasya tasminnaṣṭe cideva naḥ || 15 ||

English

These perceptions are not of the pure and inert, nor of consciousness and the body. They are merely due to ignorance. When ignorance is destroyed, only consciousness remains for us.

yathā na kasyacidvāridāruśleṣe’nubhūtayaḥ | tathā na kasyaciddehadehisangē’nubhūtayaḥ || 16 ||

English

Just as no one experiences the union of water and wood, similarly, no one experiences the union of the body and the embodied soul.

ajñasyāyaṃ yathā dṛṣṭaḥ saṃsāraḥ satyatāṃ gataḥ | na jñasyāyaṃ yathābhūtaḥ saṃsāraḥ satyatāṃ gataḥ || 17 ||

English

For the ignorant, this world appears real, but for the wise, this world does not appear real.

antaḥsaṅgavihīnāstu yathā snehaḥ dṛṣajjale | tathāsaktamanovṛttau bāhyabhogānubhūtayaḥ || 18 ||

English

Just as oil does not mix with water, similarly, the experiences of external pleasures do not mix with the mind that is free from attachment.

antaḥsaṅgena rahito yadvatsalilakāṣṭhayoḥ | sambandhas tadvadevāntarasaṅgo dehadehinoḥ || 19 ||

English

Just as there is no real connection between water and wood, similarly, there is no real internal connection between the body and the embodied soul.

antaḥsaṅgena rahitaḥ sambandho jalakāṣṭhayoḥ | sa dehadehinoścaivaṃ pratibimbāmbhasostathā || 20 ||

English

The connection between water and wood is devoid of internal connection, similarly, the connection between the body and the embodied soul is like the reflection in water.

sthitā sarvatra saṃvittiḥ śuddhā saṃvedyavarjitā | dvitvopalāñchitā tvanyā duḥsaṃvittirna vidyate || 21 ||

English

Consciousness is present everywhere, pure and devoid of the knowable. There is no other consciousness that is tainted by duality.

aduḥkhameti duḥkhitvamantaḥsaṃvedanā sphuṭam | sphāro bhavati vetālo vetālatvena bhāvitaḥ || 22 ||

English

The inner experience of sorrow becomes clear and intense. The spirit becomes a ghost, imbued with the nature of a ghost.

asaṃbandho'pi saṃbandho bhavatyantarviniścayāt | svapnāṅganāsuratavatsthāṇuvetālasaṅgavat || 23 ||

English

Even without a connection, a connection arises from inner conviction. Like the connection with a dream woman, a ghost, or a tree spirit.

asatprāyo hi saṃbandho yathā salilakāṣṭhayoḥ | tathaiva mithyāsaṃbandhaḥ śarīraparamātmanoḥ || 24 ||

English

The connection is mostly unreal, like that between water and wood. Similarly, the false connection between the body and the supreme self.

antaḥsaṅgaṃ vinā nāmbu kāṣṭhapātaiḥ pragṛhyate | ātmā'ṅgasangharahito dehaduḥkhairna dahyate || 25 ||

English

Without inner attachment, water is not grasped by wooden vessels. Similarly, the self, devoid of attachment to the body, is not affected by bodily sufferings.

dehabhāvanayaivātmā dehaduḥkhavśe sthitaḥ| tattyāgena tato mukto bhavatīti vidurbudhāḥ || 26 ||

English

The self is bound by the sufferings of the body due to its identification with the body| By renouncing that identification, one becomes liberated, as the wise know

antaḥsaṅgavihīnatvāddduḥkhavantyaṅga no yathā| patrāmbumaladārūṇi śliṣṭānyapi parasparam || 27 ||

English

Just as leaves, water, and dirty wood, though attached to each other, do not suffer due to lack of inner attachment| Similarly, the self and the body, though connected, do not suffer if there is no inner attachment

antaḥsaṅgena rahitā yānti nirdduḥkhatāṃ parām| śliṣṭānyapi tathaivātmadehendriyamanāṃsyalam || 28 ||

English

Those who are devoid of inner attachment attain the highest state of freedom from suffering| Even though the self, body, senses, and mind are connected, they remain free from suffering

antaḥsaṅgo hi saṃsāre sarveṣāṃ rāma dehinām| jarāmaraṇamohānāṃ tarūṇāṃ bījakāraṇam || 29 ||

English

O Rama, inner attachment is indeed the seed cause of old age, death, and delusion for all embodied beings in this world

antaḥsaṃsaṅgavāñjanturmagnaḥ saṃsārasāgare| antaḥsaṃsaktimuktastu tīrṇaḥ saṃsārasāgarāt || 30 ||

English

A being who is full of inner attachment is immersed in the ocean of worldly existence| One who is free from inner attachment has crossed the ocean of worldly existence

antaḥsaṃsaṅgavaccittaṃ śataśākhamivocyateantaḥsaṃsaṅgarahitaṃ vilīnaṃ cittamucyate || 31 ||

English

The mind that is attached to internal associations is said to be like a tree with a hundred branches. The mind that is free from internal associations is said to be dissolved.

bhagnasphaṭikavadviddhi manaḥ saktamapāvanamabhagnasphaṭikābhāsamasaktaṃ viddhi me manaḥ || 32 ||

English

Know the mind that is attached to be like a broken crystal, impure. Know my mind to be unattached, like an unbroken crystal.

asaktaṃ nirmalaṃ cittaṃ muktaṃ saṃsāryapi sphuṭamsaktaṃ tu dīrghatapasā yuktamapyatibandhavat || 33 ||

English

The unattached, pure mind is liberated even while in the world. The attached mind, even with prolonged austerities, remains bound.

antaḥsaktaṃ mano baddhaṃ muktaṃ saktivivarjitamantaḥsaṃsaktirevaikaṃ kāraṇaṃ bandhamokṣayoḥ || 34 ||

English

The mind that is internally attached is bound. The mind that is free from attachments is liberated. Internal attachment is the sole cause of bondage and liberation.

antaḥsaktaṃ mano baddhaṃ muktaṃ saktivivarjitamantaḥsaṃsaktirevaikaṃ kāraṇaṃ bandhamokṣayoḥ || 35 ||

English

Even while performing actions, one who is free from internal attachments does not become the doer. Like a boat made of wood floating on water.

antaḥsaṃsaktito jantorakarturapi kartṛtā | sukhaduḥkhavati svapne saṃbhramonmukhatā yathā || 36 ||

English

Even in the state of deep sleep, the individual soul experiences the sense of doership, just as in a dream one experiences joy and sorrow.

citte kartari kartṛtvamadehasyāpi vidyate | svapnādāviva vikṣubdhasukhaduḥkhadṛśopamam || 37 ||

English

Even in the mind, the sense of doership exists for the bodiless one, similar to the confused perception of joy and sorrow in a dream.

akartari manasyantarakartṛtvaṃ sphuṭaṃ bhavet | śūnyacitto hi puruṣaḥ kurvannapi na cetati || 38 ||

English

In the non-doer, the inner sense of doership becomes clear. Indeed, a person with an empty mind does not think even while acting.

cetasā kṛtamāpnoṣi cetasā na kṛtaṃ tu na | na kvacitkāraṇe deho na ca cittena kartṛtā || 39 ||

English

You attain what is done by the mind; what is not done by the mind, you do not attain. The body is not the cause anywhere, nor is there doership by the mind.

asaṃsaktamakarteva kurvadeva mano viduḥ | na karmaphalabhoktṛtvam asaktaṃ pratipadyate || 40 ||

English

The mind is known to act as if it is unattached and a non-doer. The unattached one does not experience the results of actions.

brahmahatyāśvamedhābhyāmasaṃsakto na lipyate | dūrasthakāntāsaṃlīnamanāḥ kāryairivāgragaiḥ || 41 ||

English

One who is not attached to the extremes of brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin) and asvamedha (horse sacrifice) is not affected by them. Similarly, one whose mind is absorbed in a distant beloved is not affected by worldly duties.

antaḥsaṃsaktinirmukto jīvo madhuravṛttimān | bahiḥkurvannakurvanvā kartā bhoktā na hi kvacit || 42 ||

English

One who is free from internal attachments and has a sweet disposition, whether acting or not acting externally, is neither the doer nor the enjoyer.

antaḥsaṃsaktimuktaṃ yanmanaḥ syāttadakartṛkam | tadvimuktaṃ praśāntaṃ tattadyuktaṃ tadalepakam || 43 ||

English

The mind that is free from internal attachments is not the doer. That which is free is peaceful, appropriate, and not tainted.

tasmātsarvapadārthānāṃ śliṣṭānāṃ niścitaṃ bahiḥ | sarvaduḥkhakarīṃ krūrāmantaḥsaktiṃ vivarjayet || 44 ||

English

Therefore, one should certainly avoid the cruel and painful internal attachment to all objects that are externally attached.

English

The mind, free from the impurity of internal attachment, attains peace like the clear sky. Freed from all impurities, the self attains oneness, steady like a jewel, blue like the water of the ocean.
