श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | अतिशोकपराभूतौ तस्थतुर्दृढतापसौ | तापसंशुष्कसर्वाङ्गौ तावरण्यद्रुमाविव || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | atiśokaparābhūtau tasthaturdṛḍhatāpasau | tāpasaṃśuṣkasarvāṅgau tāvaraṇyadrumāviva || 1 ||

English

Śrīvasiṣṭha said: Overwhelmed by intense grief, the two ascetics stood firm, their bodies dried up like trees in the forest.

हिन्दी

श्रीवसिष्ठ ने कहा: अत्यधिक शोक से पराभूत होकर दोनों तपस्वी दृढता से खड़े हो गए, उनके शरीर वन के पेड़ों की तरह सूखे हुए थे।

विरक्तौ विपिने कालं क्षेपयामासतुर्द्विजौ | वियूथाविव सारङ्गावनास्थामागतौ पराम् || २ ||

viraktau vipine kālaṃ kṣepayāmāsaturdvijau | viyūthāviva sāraṅgāvanāsthāmāgatau parām || 2 ||

English

The two ascetics, detached from worldly desires, spent their time in the forest like deer separated from their herd, having lost all hope.

दोनों तपस्वी, जो विरक्त हो गए थे, वन में अपना समय बिताते रहे, जैसे झुंड से अलग हुए हिरण की तरह, जिन्हें सभी आशा खो चुकी थी।

English

Days, months, and years passed for them. Gradually, they both grew old, like trees in a cave.

दिन, महीने और वर्ष उनके लिए बीतते गए। धीरे-धीरे, दोनों बूढ़े हो गए, जैसे कि गुफा में पेड़ की तरह।

अप्राप्तविमलज्ञानौ चिराज्जर्जरतापसौ | तावेकदा संघटिताविदमन्योन्यमूचतुः || ४ ||

English

Having not attained pure knowledge, they became weak and old. One day, they met and spoke to each other.

पवित्र ज्ञान प्राप्त न होने से, वे कमजोर और बूढ़े हो गए। एक दिन, वे मिले और एक-दूसरे से बात की।

विलास उवाच | जीविताग्र्यद्रुमफल हृदावासामृताम्बुधे | जगत्यस्मिन्महाबन्धो भास स्वागतमस्तु ते || ५ ||

vilāsa uvāca | jīvitāgryadrumaphala hṛdāvāsāmṛtāmbudhe | jagatyasminmahābandho bhāsa svāgatamastu te || 5 ||

English

Vilāsa said: O great friend, in this world, you are the fruit of the best tree of life, the nectar of the heart. May you be welcomed.

हिन्दी

विलास ने कहा: हे महान मित्र, इस दुनिया में आप जीवन के सर्वोत्तम वृक्ष का फल हैं, हृदय का अमृत। आपका स्वागत हो।

एतावत्यो दिनावल्लयो मद्वियोगवता त्वया | वद क्व क्षपिताः साधो कच्चित्ते सफलं तपः || ६ ||

etāvatyo dināvallayo madviyogavatā tvayā | vada kva kṣapitāḥ sādho kaccitte saphalaṃ tapaḥ || 6 ||

English

O virtuous one, tell me where you have spent these many days in separation from me. Has your penance been fruitful?

हिन्दी

हे साधो, बताओ कि तुमने मुझसे वियोग में इतने दिन कहाँ बिताए हैं। क्या तुम्हारी तपस्या सफल हुई है?

कच्चित्ते विज्वरा बुद्धिः कञ्चिज्जातस्त्वमात्मवान् | कच्चित्फलितविद्यस्त्वं कच्चित्कुशलवानसि || ७ ||

kaccitte vijvarā buddhiḥ kañcijjātastvamātmavān | kaccitphalitavidyastvaṃ kaccitkuśalavānasi || 7 ||

English

I hope your mind is free from anxiety. Have you gained some self-knowledge? Have you attained the fruits of knowledge? Are you well?

हिन्दी

मेरी इच्छा है कि तुम्हारा मन चिंतामुक्त हो। क्या तुमने कुछ आत्मज्ञान प्राप्त किया है? क्या तुमने ज्ञान के फल प्राप्त किए हैं? क्या तुम स्वस्थ हो?

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | इत्युक्तवन्तं संसारसमुद्विग्नमलं तथा | प्राहाप्राप्तमहाज्ञानं सुहृत्सुहृदमादरात् || ८ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ityuktavantaṃ saṃsārasamudvignamalaṃ tathā | prāhāprāptamahājñānaṃ suhṛtsuhṛdamādarāt || 8 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: Thus spoke the one who was distressed by worldly affairs, having not yet attained great knowledge, to his dear friend with respect.

हिन्दी

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: इस प्रकार उसने कहा, जो संसार की चिंताओं से व्याकुल था और जिसने अभी तक महान ज्ञान प्राप्त नहीं किया था, उसने अपने प्रिय मित्र से आदर के साथ कहा।

भास उवाच | साधो स्वागतताद्यैव दिष्ट्या दृष्टोऽसि मानद | कुशलं तु कुतोऽस्माकं संसारे तिष्ठतामिह || ९ ||

bhāsa uvāca | sādho svāgatatādyaiva diṣṭyā dṛṣṭo'si mānada | kuśalaṃ tu kuto'smākaṃ saṃsāre tiṣṭhatāmiha || 9 ||

English

Bhasa said: O virtuous one, welcome, it is fortunate that I see you today, O respectful one. But how can there be well-being for us who are still in this world?

हिन्दी

भास ने कहा: हे साधो, आपका स्वागत है, आज आपको देखकर बहुत खुशी हुई, हे आदरणीय। लेकिन हमारे लिए जो अभी भी इस संसार में हैं, कुशल कैसे हो सकती है?

यावन्नाधिगतं ज्ञेयं यावत्क्षीणा न चित्तभूः | यावत्तीर्णो न संसारस्तावन्मे कुशलं कुतः || १० ||

yāvannādhigataṃ jñeyaṃ yāvatkṣīṇā na cittabhūḥ | yāvattīrṇo na saṃsārastāvanme kuśalaṃ kutaḥ || 10 ||

English

Until the knowable is attained, until the mind is purified, until one crosses the worldly existence, how can there be well-being for me?

हिन्दी

जब तक ज्ञेय प्राप्त नहीं होता, जब तक मन शुद्ध नहीं होता, जब तक संसार से पार नहीं होता, तब तक मेरे लिए कुशल कैसे हो सकती है?

आशा यावदशेषेण न लूनाश्चित्तसंभवाः| वीरुधो दात्रकेणेव तावन्नः कुशलं कुतः || ११ ||

āśā yāvadaśeṣeṇa na lūnāścittasaṃbhavāḥ| vīrudho dātrakeṇeva tāvannnaḥ kuśalaṃ kutaḥ || 11 ||

English

As long as desires are not completely destroyed, like a plant that is not uprooted, how can there be well-being for us?

हिन्दी

जब तक इच्छाएँ पूरी तरह से नष्ट नहीं हो जातीं, जैसे पौधा जड़ से नहीं उखाड़ा जाता, तब तक हमारा कल्याण कैसे हो सकता है?

यावन्नाधिगतं ज्ञानं यावन्न समतोदिता| यावन्नाभ्युदितो बोधस्तावन्नः कुशलं कुतः || १२ ||

yāvannādhigataṃ jñānaṃ yāvanna samatoditā| yāvannābhyudito bodhastāvannnaḥ kuśalaṃ kutaḥ || 12 ||

English

As long as knowledge is not attained, as long as equanimity is not awakened, as long as enlightenment is not arisen, how can there be well-being for us?

हिन्दी

जब तक ज्ञान प्राप्त नहीं होता, जब तक समता जाग्रत नहीं होती, जब तक बोध उत्पन्न नहीं होता, तब तक हमारा कल्याण कैसे हो सकता है?

आत्मलाभं विना साधो विना ज्ञानमहौषधम्| उदेति पुनरेवेयं दुःसंसृतिविषूचिका || १३ ||

ātmalābhaṃ vinā sādho vinā jñānamahauṣadham| udeti punareveyaṃ duḥsaṃsṛtiviṣūcikā || 13 ||

English

O virtuous one, without the gain of the Self, without the great medicine of knowledge, this painful cycle of transmigration arises again.

हिन्दी

हे साधु, आत्मलाभ के बिना, ज्ञान के महान औषध के बिना, यह दुःखदायी संसार चक्र फिर से उत्पन्न होता है।

शैशवाङ्कुरितोज्जृम्भान्नवयौवनपल्लवः| जराकुसुमितोऽभ्येति पुनः संसारदुर्द्रुमः || १४ ||

śaiśavāṅkuritojjṛmbhānnavayauvanapallavaḥ| jarākusumito'bhyeti punaḥ saṃsāradurdrumaḥ || 14 ||

English

From the sprout of childhood, through the bloom of youth, it reaches the flower of old age, and again enters the difficult tree of transmigration.

हिन्दी

बचपन के अंकुर से, युवावस्था के पल्लव के माध्यम से, यह बुढ़ापे के फूल तक पहुँचता है, और फिर से संसार के कठिन वृक्ष में प्रवेश करता है।

कायजीर्णतरोरस्माद्बान्धवाक्रन्दषट्पदा| जराकुसुमितोदेति पुनर्मरणमञ्जरी || १५ ||

kāyajīrṇatarorasmādbāndhavākrandaṣaṭpada| jarākusumitodeti punarmaraṇamañjarī || 15 ||

English

From this withered tree of the body, with the wailing of relatives like bees, the flower of old age arises, and again the blossom of death.

हिन्दी

इस सूखे हुए शरीर के वृक्ष से, रिश्तेदारों के रोने की आवाज मधुमक्खियों की तरह, बुढ़ापे का फूल उत्पन्न होता है, और फिर से मृत्यु का फूल।

भुक्तकर्मर्तुविरसा पुराणदिवसोम्भिता | नीयते नीरसप्राया पुनः संवत्सरावली || १६ ||

bhukta-karma-ṛtu-virasā purāṇa-divasombhitā | nīyate nīrasa-prāyā punaḥ saṃvatsarāvalī || 16 ||

English

The year, devoid of the taste of actions and seasons, burdened by old days, is led again, becoming mostly tasteless.

हिन्दी

वर्ष, जो कर्म और ऋतुओं के स्वाद से रहित है, पुराने दिनों से भारी है, फिर से ले जाया जाता है, जो अधिकतर नीरस हो गया है।

महादरीषु देहाद्रेस्तृष्णाकण्टकितास्वपि | फलव्यालासु च पुनः क्रियासु परिलुठ्यते || १७ ||

mahādarīṣu dehādres-tṛṣṇākaṇṭakitāsvapi | phalavyālāsu ca punaḥ kriyāsu pariluṭhyate || 17 ||

English

Even in the great mountains, where the body is tormented by thirst, and in the fruit-bearing trees, one is again entangled in actions.

हिन्दी

महान पर्वतों में, जहाँ शरीर प्यास से पीड़ित होता है, और फलदायी वृक्षों में, एक फिर से कर्मों में उलझ जाता है।

दुःखैः सुखलवाकारैर्दीर्घादीर्घैः शुभाशुभैः | अपर्याप्तागमापायाः प्रयान्त्यायान्ति रात्रयः || १८ ||

duḥkhaiḥ sukhalavākārair-dīrghādīrghaiḥ śubhāśubhaiḥ | aparyāptāgamāpāyāḥ prayāntyāyānti rātrayaḥ || 18 ||

English

Nights come and go, filled with sorrows and joys, long and short, auspicious and inauspicious, never fully satisfying.

हिन्दी

रातें आती-जाती रहती हैं, दुःख और सुख से भरी हुई, लंबी और छोटी, शुभ और अशुभ, कभी पूरी तरह से संतुष्ट नहीं करतीं।

अयथार्थक्रियारम्भैः कदाशावेशपल्लवैः | क्षीयते कर्मभिस्तुच्छैरायुराहतकर्मभिः || १९ ||

ayathārthakriyārambhaiḥ kadāśāveśapallavaiḥ | kṣīyate karmabhistucchaiḥ āyurāhatakarmbhiḥ || 19 ||

English

Life is wasted by useless actions, begun with false intentions and momentary passions, and by deeds that are insignificant and harmful.

हिन्दी

जीवन बेकार कर्मों से बर्बाद होता है, जो झूठे इरादों और क्षणिक जुनून से शुरू होते हैं, और अनावश्यक और हानिकारक कार्यों से।

उन्मूलिताश्रयालानो मनोमत्तमतङ्गजः | तृष्णाकरेणुकोन्निद्रो दूरं विपरिधावति || २० ||

unmūlitāśrayālāno manomattamataṅgajaḥ | tṛṣṇākareṇukonnidro dūraṃ viparidhāvati || 20 ||

English

Like an elephant in rut, with its mind deranged, uprooted from its shelter, and tormented by the dust of desire, it runs far away.

जैसे मतवाला हाथी, जिसका मन विक्षिप्त हो गया है, अपने आश्रय से उखड़ गया है, और इच्छा की धूल से पीड़ित है, वह दूर भागता है।

जिह्वाचपलतालग्नः कायद्रुममहालये | पतच्चिन्तामणौ वृद्धो गर्द्धगृध्रो विवर्धते || २१ ||

jihvācapalatālagnaḥ kāyadrumamahālaye | pataccintāmaṇau vṛddho garddhagṛdhro vivardhate || 21 ||

English

The one who is attached to the fickleness of the tongue in the great abode of the body, falls into the wish-fulfilling gem and grows old like a vulture.

हिन्दी

जो शरीर के महान आश्रय में जीभ की चंचलता से जुड़ा हुआ है, वह चिन्तामणि में गिर जाता है और गिद्ध की तरह बूढ़ा हो जाता है।

नीरसा निःसुखा लघ्वी पतत्पेलवगात्रिका | जीर्णपर्णसवर्णेयं क्षीयते दिवसावली || २२ ||

nīrasā niḥsukhā laghvī patatpelavagātrikā | jīrṇaparṇasavarṇeyaṃ kṣīyate divasāvalī || 22 ||

English

Tasteless, joyless, weak, with a falling thin body, this one with the color of withered leaves diminishes with the passage of days.

हिन्दी

निरास, निःसुख, दुर्बल, गिरती हुई पतली देह वाली, यह सूखे पत्तों के रंग वाली दिनों के साथ घटती जाती है।

अवमानरजोध्वस्तमस्तंगतवपुःश्रियम् | मुखं धूसरतामेति हिमैः पद्ममिवाहतम् || २३ ||

avamānarajodhvastamastaṃgatavapuḥśriyam | mukhaṃ dhūsaratāmeti himaiḥ padmamivāhatam || 23 ||

English

The body's glory, destroyed by the dust of disrespect, reaches the state of being faded. The face becomes pale like a lotus affected by frost.

हिन्दी

अपमान की धूल से नष्ट हुई शरीर की शोभा मुरझाए हुए अवस्था तक पहुंच जाती है। चेहरा ठंड से प्रभावित कमल की तरह पीला हो जाता है।

शुष्यतः कायसरसः प्रगलद्यौवनाम्भसः | राजहंसः क्षणादायुरनिवर्ति पलायते || २४ ||

śuṣyataḥ kāyasarasaḥ pragaladyauvanāmbhasaḥ | rājahaṃsaḥ kṣaṇādāyuranivarti palāyate || 24 ||

English

As the essence of the body dries up and the water of youth evaporates, the royal swan of life flees without returning in an instant.

हिन्दी

जैसे-जैसे शरीर का सार सूखता जाता है और युवावस्था का जल वाष्पित होता जाता है, जीवन का राजहंस एक पल में लौटकर नहीं आता हुआ भाग जाता है।

कालानिलबलोद्धूताज्जर्जराज्जीवितद्रुमात् | भोगपुष्पाणि दिवसपर्णानि निपतन्त्यधः || २५ ||

kālānilabaloddhūtājjjarjarājjīvitadrumāt | bhogapuṣpāṇi divasaparṇāni nipatantyadhaḥ || 25 ||

English

From the old tree of life, shaken by the force of the wind of time, the flowers of enjoyment, the leaves of days, fall down.

हिन्दी

समय की हवा के बल से हिलाए जाने पर, जीवन के पुराने पेड़ से, भोग के फूल, दिनों के पत्ते, नीचे गिरते हैं।

भोगभोगिश्रितेष्वन्तर्दुःखदर्दुरधारिषु | मनोमोहान्धकूपेषु पूरेषु विनिमज्जति || २६ ||

bhogabhogiśriteṣvantarduḥkhadarduradhāriṣu | manomohāndhakūpeṣu pūreṣu vinimajjati || 26 ||

English

In the midst of enjoyments and enjoyers, within the deep sorrows and burdens, the mind sinks into the wells of delusion and ignorance.

भोगों और भोगियों के बीच, गहरे दुःख और बोझ के अंदर, मन भ्रम और अज्ञान के कूपों में डूब जाता है।

नानानुरञ्जनास्पृष्टा तृष्णा तरलपेलवा | चैत्यमग्रपताकेव दूरं समधिरोहति || २७ ||

nānānurañjanāspṛṣṭā tṛṣṇā taralapelavā | caitayamagrpatākeva dūraṃ samadhirohati || 27 ||

English

Desire, touched by various pleasures, is unstable and weak like a flag at the top of a temple, it rises high.

इच्छा, जो विभिन्न भोगों से स्पर्शित होती है, अस्थिर और दुर्बल होती है जैसे मंदिर के शिखर पर लगी झंडी, वह ऊपर उठती है।

asya saṃsāratantrasya bṛhatkālavilāspadaḥ | jīvitāśāmayam tantumanatkākhurnikṛntati || 28 ||

English

In this vast web of the world, which is a playground of time, the thread of hope for life is cut by the rat of death.

यौवनोत्कटकल्लोला वहल्लोलासिफेनिला | परावर्तमहावर्ता याति जीवितदुर्नदी || २९ ||

English

The river of life, with its youthful vigor and turbulent waves, flows with great whirlpools and reaches its end.

English

The world, filled with various activities and turbulent waves, flows with restless actions until the end.

अनन्ता बन्धुजनतानद्यो गम्भीरकोटरे | अजस्रं निपतन्त्येता वितते कालसागरे || ३१ ||

anantā bandhujanatānadyo gambhīrakoṭare | ajasraṃ nipatantyetā vitate kālasāgare || 31 ||

English

Endless relatives fall continuously into the deep abyss of the vast ocean of time.

अनन्त रिश्तेदार लगातार गहरे काल सागर में गिरते रहते हैं।

देहरत्नशलाकेयं नाशपङ्कार्णवोदरे | न ज्ञायते क्व मग्नेति तात जन्मनि जन्मनि || ३२ ||

deharatnaśalākeyaṃ nāśapaṅkārṇavodare | na jñāyate kva magneti tāta janmani janmani || 32 ||

English

This body, like a precious gem, is lost in the ocean of destruction; it is not known where it is submerged, O father, from birth to birth.

हिन्दी

यह शरीर, जैसे एक मूल्यवान रत्न, विनाश के सागर में खो जाता है; यह नहीं पता चलता कि यह कहाँ डूब गया है, हे पिता, जन्म-जन्मांतर में।

चिन्ताचक्रे चिरं बद्धं कुक्रियाचारचञ्चुरम् | चेतो भ्रमति सामुद्रे गर्तावर्ते तृणं यथा || ३३ ||

cintācakre ciraṃ baddhaṃ kukriyācāracañcuram | ceto bhramati sāmudre gartāvarte tṛṇaṃ yathā || 33 ||

English

The mind, bound for a long time in the cycle of thoughts, wanders like a straw in the whirlpool of the ocean due to bad deeds.

हिन्दी

मन, विचारों के चक्र में लंबे समय तक बंधा हुआ, बुरे कर्मों के कारण सागर के भंवर में एक तिनके की तरह भटकता है।

उह्यमानमनन्तेषु चेतः कार्यमहोर्मिषु | क्षणमेति न विश्रान्तिं चिन्ताताण्डविताशयम् || ३४ ||

uhyamānamananteṣu cetaḥ kāryamahormiṣu | kṣaṇameti na viśrāntiṃ cintātāṇḍavitāśayam || 34 ||

English

The mind, being carried away in the endless waves of duties, does not find rest even for a moment, as it is constantly dancing with thoughts.

हिन्दी

मन, अनंत कर्तव्यों की लहरों में बहाया जाता है, एक पल के लिए भी विश्राम नहीं पाता, क्योंकि यह लगातार विचारों के साथ नाचता रहता है।

इदं कृतं करोमीदं करिष्यामीदमित्यलम् | कलनाजालवलिता मूर्च्छिता मतिपक्षिणी || ३५ ||

idaṃ kṛtaṃ karomīdaṃ kariṣyāmīdamityalam | kalanājālavalitā mūrcchitā matipakṣiṇī || 35 ||

English

This has been done, this I am doing, this I will do—enough of this! The mind, entangled in the web of calculations, is bewildered and fainted.

हिन्दी

यह हो चुका है, यह मैं कर रहा हूँ, यह मैं करूँगा—बस करो इससे! मन, गणनाओं के जाल में उलझा हुआ, मूर्च्छित और बेहोश हो गया है।

अयं सुहृदयं शत्रुरिति द्वन्द्वमहाद्विपः | विनिकृन्तति मर्माणि यथा नीलोत्पलानि मे || ३६ ||

ayaṃ suhṛdayaṃ śatruh iti dvandvamahādvipaḥ | vinikṛntati marmāṇi yathā nīlotpalāni me || 36 ||

English

This great elephant of duality, thinking 'this is a friend, this is an enemy,' tears my heart like a blue lotus.

हिन्दी

यह महान द्वंद्व हाथी, सोचता है 'यह मित्र है, यह शत्रु है,' मेरे हृदय को नील कमल की तरह चीरता है।

चिन्तानद्या महावर्ते वीचिकानिचये चिरम् | क्षणादुच्छूनतामेति मनोमीनः क्षणाद्गतिः || ३७ ||

cintānadyā mahāvarte vīcikānicaye ciram | kṣaṇāducchūnatāmeti manomīnaḥ kṣaṇādgatiḥ || 37 ||

English

In the great whirlpool of the river of thoughts, amidst the waves, the mind-fish quickly becomes dry in an instant.

हिन्दी

विचारों की नदी के महान भंवर में, लहरों के बीच, मन-मछली क्षण भर में सूख जाती है।

अनात्मीयानि दुःखानि बहून्येवंविधान्ययम् | आत्मबुद्ध्या विचिन्वानो जनो गच्छति दीनताम् || ३८ ||

English

Experiencing various pleasures and pains, broken by the wind of old age and death, this person, rolling in the world's belly, becomes withered like a leaf without sap.
