śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | manasaiva manaśchittvā yadyātmā nāvalokyate | mametyahamiti tyaktvā tattāmarasalocana || 1 ||
Shri Vasistha said: If the self is not seen even after the mind has been cut by the mind, then, O Rama, give up the notions of 'mine' and 'I'.
श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: यदि मन से ही मन को काटकर भी आत्मा नहीं दिखाई देता, तो हे राम, 'मेरा' और 'मैं' की धारणा को त्याग दो।
नास्तमेति जगद्दुःखं यथा चित्रगतो रविः | आयात्यापदनन्तत्वं महार्णववदातता || २ ||
nāstameti jagaddhuḥkhaṃ yathā citragato raviḥ | āyātyāpadanantatvaṃ mahārṇavavadātatā || 2 ||
The world's sorrow does not end, just as the sun does not set for a painting. Calamities come endlessly, like the vast ocean.
दुनिया का दुःख समाप्त नहीं होता, जैसे चित्र के लिए सूर्य नहीं डूबता। आपदाएँ अनन्त रूप से आती हैं, जैसे विशाल समुद्र।
पुनःपुनरुपायाति जलकल्लोलकारणम् | मेघनीलतमःश्यामा संसृतिप्रावृडाकुला || ३ ||
punaḥpunarupāyāti jalakallolakāraṇam | meghanīlatamaḥśyāmā saṃsṛtiprāvṛḍākulā || 3 ||
Again and again, it brings the cause of water waves, darkened by clouds, disturbed by the cycle of existence.
बार-बार, यह पानी की लहरों का कारण लाता है, बादलों से अंधेरा होता है, अस्तित्व के चक्र से व्याकुल।
अत्रैवोदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् | संवादं सुहृदो सह्यसानौ भासविलासयोः || ४ ||
atraivodāharantīmamitihāsaṃ purātanam | saṃvādaṃ suhṛdo sahyasānau bhāsavilāsayoḥ || 4 ||
Here, they narrate this ancient story, the dialogue between the friends Sahya and Bhasa, full of playfulness.
यहाँ, वे इस प्राचीन कथा को सुनाते हैं, मित्रों सह्य और भास के बीच खेल-भरे संवाद को।
अस्त्युत्सेधजिताकाशः पीठेन जितभूतलः | तलेन जितपातालस्त्रिलोकविजयो गिरिः || ५ ||
astyutsedhajitākāśaḥ pīṭhena jitabhūtalaḥ | talena jitapātālastrilokavijayo giriḥ || 5 ||
There is a mountain that conquers the sky with its height, the earth with its base, and the underworld with its foot. It is the conqueror of the three worlds.
एक पर्वत है जो अपनी ऊँचाई से आकाश को, अपने आधार से पृथ्वी को, और अपने पैर से पाताल को जीतता है। यह तीनों लोकों का विजेता है।
असंख्यकुसुमापूरोऽसंख्यनिर्मलनिर्झरः | गुह्यकारक्षितनिधिः सह्यनामाऽविषह्यभाः || ६ ||
asankhyakusumāpūro'sankhyanirmalanirjharaḥ | guhyakārakṣitanidhiḥ sahyanāmā'viṣahyabhāḥ || 6 ||
The mountain is adorned with countless flowers and has countless pure streams. It is a treasure trove protected by the Guhyakas, known as Sahya, and is unbearable.
पर्वत असंख्य फूलों से सजा है और असंख्य शुद्ध झरनों से भरा है। यह गुह्यकों द्वारा सुरक्षित एक खजाना है, जिसे सह्य के नाम से जाना जाता है, और यह असहनीय है।
मुक्तापटलसंपूर्णैर्भानुभासुरभित्तिभिः | भासुरः काञ्चनतटैः कटैरिव सुरद्विपः || ७ ||
muktāpaṭalasampūrṇairbhānubhāsurabhittibhiḥ | bhāsuraḥ kāñcanataṭaiḥ kaṭairiva suradvipaḥ || 7 ||
The mountain shines like the walls of pearls illuminated by the sun, and like the golden shores, it resembles the elephant of the gods.
पर्वत सूर्य की चमक से मोती की दीवारों से भरा है, और सोने के किनारों की तरह, यह देवताओं के हाथी की तरह लगता है।
क्वचित्पुष्पभरासारो धातुसाराततः क्वचित् | क्वचित्फुल्लसरःसारो रत्नशालिशिलः क्वचित् || ८ ||
kvacitpuṣpabharāsāro dhātusārātataḥ kvacit | kvacitphullasaraḥsāro ratnaśāliśilaḥ kvacit || 8 ||
In some places, the mountain is full of flowers, in others, it is rich in minerals. In some places, it is full of blooming lakes, and in others, it is made of precious stones.
कुछ जगहों पर, पर्वत फूलों से भरा है, और कुछ जगहों पर, यह खनिजों से समृद्ध है। कुछ जगहों पर, यह खिले हुए तालाबों से भरा है, और कुछ जगहों पर, यह रत्नों से बना है।

itō raṭannirjharavānitaḥ kvaṇitakīcakaḥ | itō raṭadguhāvāta itaḥ ṣaṭpadaghuṅghumaḥ || 9 ||
Here there are streams of gems, there the humming of bees. Here the wind blows through the caves, there the buzzing of insects.
यहाँ रत्नों की धाराएँ हैं, वहाँ भौंरों की गुंजार है। यहाँ गुफाओं से हवा बहती है, वहाँ कीड़ों की भनभनाहट है।
सानौ गीतोऽप्सरोवृन्दैर्वने मृगखगारवः | अधित्यकायां मत्ताभ्रो गगनेषु खगारवः || १० ||
sānau gīto'psarovṛndairvane mṛgakhagāravaḥ | adhityakāyāṃ mattābhro gaganeṣu khagāravaḥ || 10 ||
In the forest, the sound of deer and birds is like the song of Apsaras. In the sky, the sound of birds is like the roar of intoxicated clouds.
वन में, हिरण और पक्षियों की आवाज अप्सराओं के गीत की तरह है। आकाश में, पक्षियों की आवाज मतवाले बादलों की गर्जना की तरह है।
विद्याधराश्रितगुहो भृङ्गगीताम्बुजाकरः | किरातगीतपर्यन्तः खगगीतवनद्रुमः || ११ ||
vidyādharāśritaguho bhṛṅgagītāmbujākaraḥ | kirātagītaparyantaḥ khagagītavanadrumaḥ || 11 ||
Guha, who is sheltered by the Vidyadharas, is the creator of the lotus-like songs of the bees, extending to the songs of the Kiratas, and is the tree of the forest of the songs of the birds.
विद्याधरों द्वारा आश्रित गुह, भौंरों के कमल जैसे गीतों का कर्ता है, जो किरातों के गीतों तक फैलता है, और पक्षियों के गीतों का वन का वृक्ष है।
स्कन्धेषु देवैर्वलितः पादेषु वलितो नरैः | पाताले वलितो नागैर्जगद्गृहमिवापरम् || १२ ||
skandheṣu devarivlitapādeṣu valito naraiḥ | pātāle valito nāgairjagadgṛhamivāparam || 12 ||
Surrounded by gods on the shoulders, by humans at the feet, and by serpents in the underworld, it is like another abode of the universe.
देवताओं से घिरा हुआ कंधों पर, मनुष्यों से पैरों पर, और पाताल में सर्पों से घिरा हुआ, यह ब्रह्मांड का एक और निवास जैसा है।
कन्दरेषु श्रितः सिद्धैर्निधानैरन्तराश्रितः | चन्दनेषु श्रितो नागैः सिंहैः श्रृङ्गशिखासु च || १३ ||
kandareṣu śritaḥ siddhairnidhānairantarāśritaḥ | candaneṣu śrito nāgaiḥ siṃhaiḥ śrṛṅgaśikhāsu ca || 13 ||
Sheltered in the caves by the Siddhas, supported internally by treasures, sheltered in the sandalwood trees by the serpents, and by the lions on the mountain peaks.
गुफाओं में सिद्धों द्वारा आश्रित, खजानों से आंतरिक रूप से समर्थित, चंदन के पेड़ों में सर्पों द्वारा आश्रित, और पर्वत की चोटियों पर सिंहों द्वारा आश्रित।
पुष्पाभ्रसंवीतवपुः पुष्परेण्वभ्रपांसुलः | पुष्पवात्याभ्रहृद्भ्रान्तः पुष्पपादपपाण्डुरः || १४ ||
puṣpābhrasaṃvītavapuḥ puṣpareṇvabhrapāṃsulaḥ | puṣpavātyābhrabhṛdbhrāntaḥ puṣpapādapapāṇḍuraḥ || 14 ||
His body is covered with flower-like clouds, dusted with flower pollen, bewildered by the flower-scented breeze, and pale like the flowering trees.
उसका शरीर फूलों जैसे बादलों से ढका हुआ है, फूलों के पराग से धूलि झड़ी हुई है, फूलों की सुगंध वाली हवा से भ्रमित है, और फूलों वाले पेड़ों की तरह पीला है।
धातुधूल्यभ्रकपिलो रत्नोपलतलस्थितैः | मन्दारगैरिव पुरस्त्रीगणैरलमाश्रितः || १५ ||
dhātudhūlyabhrakapilo ratnopalatalasthitaiḥ | mandāragairiva purastrīgaṇairalamāśritaḥ || 15 ||
He is tawny like the dust of minerals and clouds, adorned with gems and precious stones, and beautifully sheltered by the women of the city like Mandara flowers.
वह खनिजों और बादलों की धूल की तरह भूरा है, रत्नों और मूल्यवान पत्थरों से अलंकृत है, और मंदार फूलों की तरह शहर की महिलाओं द्वारा सुंदर रूप से आश्रित है।
अभ्रनीलांशुकच्छन्ना मूकरत्नविभूषणाः | शिलाः कनकसुन्दर्यो यत्र श्रृङ्गाभिसारिकाः || १६ ||
abhranīlāṃśukacchannā mūkaratnavibhūṣaṇāḥ | śilāḥ kanakasundaryo yatra śrṛṅgābhisārikāḥ || 16 ||
There, the rocks are covered with blue cloth and adorned with pearl jewels, and the golden beautiful rocks are embraced by the peaks.
वहाँ, शिलाएँ नीले वस्त्रों से ढकी हुई हैं और मोती के रत्नों से अलंकृत हैं, और सुनहरी सुंदर शिलाएँ पर्वत की चोटियों से घिरी हुई हैं।
तत्रोत्तरतटे सानौ विनम्रफलपादपे | रत्नपुष्करिणीजालवहन्निर्झरवारिणि || १७ ||
tatrottarataṭe sānau vinamraphalapādape | ratnapuṣkariṇījālavahannirjharavāriṇi || 17 ||
There, on the northern bank, the tree with humble fruits bows down, and the water from the waterfall carries the network of jewel-like lotus ponds.
वहाँ, उत्तरी तट पर, विनम्र फलों वाला वृक्ष झुका हुआ है, और झरने का पानी रत्न-जैसे कमल तालाबों के जाल को लेकर जाता है।
चूतद्रुमलतोन्मुक्तपुष्पस्तबकदन्तुरे | विफुल्लाङ्कोलपुन्नागनीलनीरजदिक्तटे || १८ ||
cūtadrumalatonmuktapuṣpastabakadanture | viphullāṅkolapunnāganīlanīrajadiktate || 18 ||
There, the mango tree's creepers release flowers and buds, and the fully bloomed Aṅkola and Punnāga trees, along with the blue lotus, adorn the direction.
वहाँ, आम के पेड़ की लताएँ फूल और कलियाँ छोड़ती हैं, और पूरी तरह से खिले हुए अंकोल और पुन्नाग वृक्ष, नीले कमल के साथ, दिशा को सजाते हैं।
लतावितानच्छन्नार्के रत्नांशुभम्भास्वरे | स्रवज्जम्बूरसस्यूते स्वलोकाह्लादकारिणि || १९ ||
latāvitānacchannārke ratnāṃśubhambhāsvare | sravajjambūrasasyūte svalokāhlādakāriṇi || 19 ||
There, the sun is covered by the canopy of creepers, shining with the radiance of jewel-like rays, and the flowing juice of the Jambu tree brings joy to its own world.
वहाँ, सूर्य लताओं के छत्र से ढका हुआ है, रत्न-जैसी किरणों की चमक से चमकता हुआ, और जामुन के पेड़ का बहता हुआ रस अपने जगत को आह्लादित करता है।
ब्रह्मलोकसमः स्वर्गरम्यः शिवपुरोपमः | अत्रेरस्त्याश्रमः श्रीमान्सिद्धश्रमहरो महान् || २० ||
brahmalokasamaḥ svargaramyaḥ śivapuropamaḥ | atrerastyāśramaḥ śrīmānsiddhaśramaharo mahān || 20 ||
Equal to Brahmaloka, delightful like heaven, comparable to Shivapura, there is the magnificent hermitage of Atri, which is a great abode of accomplished sages.
ब्रह्मलोक के समान, स्वर्ग की तरह रमणीय, शिवपुर के समान, वहाँ अत्रि का श्रीमान आश्रम है, जो सिद्ध ऋषियों का महान निवास स्थान है।
महत्यत्राश्रमे तस्मिंस्तापसौ द्वौ बभूवतुः | कोविदौ तु नभोमार्ग इव शुक्रबृहस्पती || २१ ||
mahatyatrāśrame tasmiṃstāpasau dvau babhūvatuḥ | kovidau tu nabhomārga iva śukrabṛhaspatī || 21 ||
In that great hermitage, there were two ascetics who were as knowledgeable as the paths of the sky, Shukra and Brihaspati.
उस महान आश्रम में दो तपस्वी थे जो आकाश के मार्ग के समान ज्ञानी थे, शुक्र और बृहस्पति की तरह।
तयोरथैकास्पदयोस्तथाभूतां सुतावुभौ | फुल्लाङ्कुरौ शुद्धतनू सरस्यम्बुजयोरिव || २२ ||
tayorathaikāspadayostathābhūtāṃ sutāvubhau | phullāṅkurau śuddhatanū sarasyambujayoriva || 22 ||
Both of them had two sons who were as pure and beautiful as the blooming lotuses in a lake.
उन दोनों के दो पुत्र थे जो सरोवर के खिले हुए कमलों की तरह शुद्ध और सुंदर थे।
विलासभासनामानौ वृद्धिमाययतुः क्रमात् | तौ पित्रोः पल्लवे दीर्घे लतापादपयोरिव || २३ ||
vilāsabhāsanāmānau vṛddhimāyayatuḥ kramāt | tau pitroḥ pallave dīrghe latāpādapayoriva || 23 ||
They grew up gradually, adorned with grace and splendor, like the long shoots of a creeper and a tree.
वे धीरे-धीरे बढ़े, सुशोभित और सुंदर, लता और पेड़ की लंबी पत्तियों की तरह।
आस्तामन्योन्यसुस्निग्धौ सुहृदौ वल्लभौ मिथः | तिलतैलवदाश्लिष्टौ तौ पुष्पामोदवत्स्थितौ || २४ ||
āstāmanyonyasusnigdhau suhṛdau vallabhau mithaḥ | tilatailavadāśliṣṭau tau puṣpāmodavatsthitau || 24 ||
They were very affectionate towards each other, like dear friends and beloveds, closely attached like sesame oil and seeds, and fragrant like flowers.
वे एक-दूसरे के प्रति बहुत स्नेही थे, जैसे प्रिय मित्र और प्रेमी, तिल और तेल की तरह घनिष्ठ रूप से जुड़े हुए, और फूलों की तरह सुगंधित।
नाऽयुक्तौ पुत्रयुक्तौ तु सुरक्ताविव दंपती | एकं द्वित्वमिवापन्नं सममासीत्तयोर्मनः || २५ ||
nā'yuktau putrayuktau tu suraktāviva daṃpatī | ekaṃ dvitvamivāpannaṃ samamāsīttayormanaḥ || 25 ||
They were not just sons but seemed like a loving couple, their minds united as if one had become two.
वे केवल पुत्र नहीं थे, बल्कि प्रेमी जोड़े की तरह लगते थे, उनके मन एक हो गए थे, जैसे एक दो हो गया हो।
तौ तथान्योन्यमुदितौ मनोहरतराकृती | तस्थतुः स्वाश्रमे मौने सरोज इव षट्पदौ || २६ ||
tau tathānyonyamuditau manoharatarākṛtī | tasthatuḥ svāśrame maune saroj iva ṣaṭpadau || 26 ||
Thus, they both, with their charming forms, stood in their hermitage in silence, like two bees on a lotus.
इस प्रकार, वे दोनों अपने मनमोहक रूप में, अपने आश्रम में मौन रहकर खड़े हुए, जैसे कमल पर दो भौंरे।
प्रापतुर्यौवनं बाल्यमुत्सृज्य नववल्लभौ | कालेनाल्पतरेणैव चन्द्रसूर्याविवोदितौ || २७ ||
prāpaturyauvanaṃ bālyamutsṛjya navavallabhau | kālenālpatareṇaiva candrasūryāvivoditau || 27 ||
They attained youth, leaving behind their childhood, like the new beloveds, the moon and the sun, rising in a short span of time.
वे अपने बचपन को छोड़कर युवावस्था को प्राप्त हुए, जैसे चंद्रमा और सूर्य नए प्रेमियों की तरह थोड़े समय में उदित होते हैं।
जग्मतुर्देहमुत्सृज्य ततस्तौ पितरौ तयोः | स्वर्गं जरार्तावुड्डीय नीडादिव विहंगमौ || २८ ||
jagmaturdēhamutsṛjya tatastau pitrau tayoḥ | svargaṃ jarārtāvuḍḍīya nīḍādivihaṅgamau || 28 ||
Then, their parents, afflicted by old age, left their bodies and went to heaven, like birds leaving their nest.
तब, उनके माता-पिता, जो बुढ़ापे से पीड़ित थे, अपने शरीर को छोड़कर स्वर्ग चले गए, जैसे पक्षी अपने घोंसले को छोड़कर चले जाते हैं।
पञ्चत्वं गतयोः पित्रोर्दीनवक्त्रौ बभूवतुः | तप्ताङ्गौ विगतोत्साहौ पद्माविव जलोद्धृतौ || २९ ||
pañcatvaṃ gatayoḥ pitror dīnavaktrau babhūvatuḥ | taptāṅgau vigatotsāhau padmāviv jaloddhṛtau || 29 ||
With the death of their parents, they became sad-faced, their bodies afflicted with grief, like lotuses plucked from the water, devoid of enthusiasm.
अपने माता-पिता की मृत्यु के बाद, वे दुःखी चेहरे वाले हो गए, उनके शरीर शोक से पीड़ित हो गए, जैसे पानी से उखाड़े गए कमल, जिनमें उत्साह नहीं रहा।

tatrordhvadaihikaṃ kṛtvā cakrāte paridevanam | lokasthitiralaghhyā hi mahatāmapi mānada || 30 ||
There, they performed the last rites and lamented, for the ways of the world are unavoidable, even for the great ones, O respectful one.

kṛtvourdhvadaihikamatho vyathayābhibhūtau śokotthayā karuṇayārtagirā vilapya | citrārpitāviv nirastasamastaceṣṭau tau saṃsthitau sukhamaśūnyahṛdau vivṛttau || 31 ||
Having performed the funeral rites and overwhelmed by grief, they lamented with sorrowful words born of anguish. Like pictures, they stood motionless, their hearts empty of joy and their senses withdrawn.
अंत्येष्टि कर्म करके और दुःख से भरे हुए, वे शोक से उत्पन्न करुणामय शब्दों से विलाप करते हुए खड़े हो गए। चित्रों की तरह निश्चल, उनके हृदय सुख से खाली थे और उनकी सारी इंद्रियाँ स्थिर थीं।
