Sri Vasishtha said: Thinking over the world's confusion in this way, Suraghu and Parigha honored each other, and pleased, each went back to his own work.
It is worth holding in thought, a refuge, easy to reach, rich with the wealth of complete bliss, very calm and clear - one comes to rest there, in the highest Self, the very space of consciousness.
The one who always lives in the inner Self, always turns inward, and is happy, always holding fast to awareness - sorrows of the mind cannot trouble him.
Even one who is deeply engaged in worldly dealings, and full of liking and disliking, still does not take on any stain within - like a lotus that stays in water untouched by it.
The sage who has full and right knowledge, who is pure, and whose mind is calm within - the mind cannot trouble him, just as an elephant cannot trouble a lion, the king of beasts.
bhogaikeśaraṇaṃ dīnaṃ na cittaṃ jñasya vidyate | nandane durdruma iva jñacittaṃ hi mahāvapuḥ || 9 ||
The mind of the one who knows is not a wretched thing that has only pleasure for its shelter. In truth, the mind of the one who knows has a great, noble form - not like a stunted, worthless tree in Nandana, the garden of the gods.
virakto janmamaraṇe yathā duḥkhī na mānavaḥ | parijñātākhilāvidyaṃ tathā cittaṃ na duḥkhitam || 10 ||
Just as a man who feels no craving for birth and death is not made sad by them, so too the mind that has fully understood all its ignorance is never sad.
O virtuous one, the one who has fully understood the mind's delusion is not touched by sin even while living amid this whole rising world - just as the open sky is not touched by dust.
avidyā saṃparijñātā yadaiva hi tadaiva hi | sā parikṣīyate bhūyaḥ svapneneva hi bhogabhūḥ || 13 ||
The very moment ignorance is fully known, that very moment it wastes away completely - just like the land of pleasures seen in a dream fades away once the dream ends.
Even one who is engaged in worldly dealings - if his mind stays unattached within and his intellect stays single and steady - such a good man is not touched by sin, just as a fish's eye is not touched by the water it lives in.
When the shining light of consciousness arrives, the night of ignorance fades away completely. Then the wisdom of the one who knows, having reached the highest bliss, shines bright.
Those are the days truly worth living, and those actions done one after another are joyful, in which the moonlight of consciousness, risen like the moon of the Self, fills the sky of the heart.
The man who has crossed beyond delusion, through constant thought about his own Self, becomes cool within - just as the moon becomes cool through its own nectar.
Those are the true friends, those are the true teachings, and those are the true days - the ones that bring a joyful freedom from craving, and a clear dawning of one's own awareness of the Self.
For a long time they grieve, those wretched weeds growing wild in the forest of birth - the ones who are careless about looking within at the Self, and whose faults have not left them.
He is bound by hundreds of ropes of hope, deeply greedy and eager for pleasures, his body withered by old age, worn down by the sighs of grief.
He carries a heavy load of sorrow, living out his life wandering in the forest of birth, smeared with the mud of bad deeds, lying in the swamp of delusion.
He is bitten by swarms of biting flies that are his own passions, dragged along by the strap of his craving, kept shut inside the mind's shop like goods in a merchant's house, held motionless in the bonds of family.
Bright to look at on the outside, yet wretched within, overrun by his own senses that pull him outward, overwhelmed by the clanging bell of his own actions, struck again and again by the blows of his bad deeds.
Carrying the yoke of the wheel that turns through appearing and disappearing - being born and dying again and again - rolling on the ground in the dreadful forest of ignorance, his limbs worn out.
Forever sunk in troubles of his own making, sinking down in despair, owning nothing, his body broken under the weight of his deeds, crying out in a pitiful wail.
Rama, in the campaka tree that is a good man, whose leaves are gentle, cool words, whose shade is good, whose flowers are its smile, one finds deep rest in a moment.
Without such a tree, only the burning heat of great delusion grows. So a wise person, once he has gained even a little understanding, should not stay asleep here.
The self alone is the friend of the self; one should lift up the self by the self alone. One should not, out of pride, throw the self into the mud-ocean of birth.
na dhanāni na mitrāṇi na śāstrāṇi na bāndhavāḥ | narāṇāmupakurvanti magnasvātmasamuddhṛtau || 37 ||
Wealth does not help, friends do not help, scriptures do not help, kinsmen do not help; none of these help a man raise up his own sunken self.
Through the effort of turning away from desire and of practice, born from reflecting on oneself, one crosses the ocean of this world in the boat that is the vision of truth.
One should pull out the soul, that elephant tied to the post of ego by the rope of craving, maddened by the mind, sunk deep in the mud of birth.
Just by this much, the supreme self, the lord of the gods, is understood: when the body is seen as no different from a piece of wood or a clod of earth.
When the ego is completely worn away, there comes a state born of happiness and joy, a state whole and complete. That state should be sought with great effort.
That state is like a full, brimming ocean. It does not come within the reach of the senses; no comparison fits it; and it runs after no attachment or delight of its own.
It is only a small bud of the light of pure consciousness that has grown steady. If one attains the vision called Turiya, the fourth state, that alone can be compared to it.
That state is itself brought about through yoga; it is close in nature to deep sleep. It cannot be reached by words, Rama; it is felt only within the heart, here.
Without direct experience, even the true nature of a mere piece of something cannot be known. Without direct experience, the true form of the self, too, cannot be known.
When the mind has firmly turned inward and settled within, and its outward movement is stilled, then this whole, endless reality of the self, the self of everything that moves and everything that does not move, the God of gods, is felt directly, by itself.
After that comes the end of craving for the things of the senses. After that, a supreme, pure, radiant light appears. And after that, through even-mindedness, one settles into one's own true nature, a state that, for great souls, has a form beyond thought.
