15.57.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yadātmamaričasyāntaścittvāttīkṣṇatvavedanam | tadahaṃtādi bhedādi deśakālādi cetayataḥ || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: within a peppercorn itself, the feel of sharpness comes from the awareness inside it. In the same way, the feeling of 'I,' of difference, and of place and time all come from being known by that same awareness.

yadātmalavaṇasyāntaścittvāllavaṇavedanam | tadahaṃtādi bhedādi deśakālādi matsthitam || 2 ||

Within salt itself, the feel of saltiness comes from the awareness inside it. In the same way, the feeling of 'I,' of difference, and of place and time all rest in me.

svato yadantarātmeśościttvānmādhuryavedanam | tadahaṃtādi bhedādi jagattattvādi jṛmbhitam || 3 ||

By itself, within sugarcane, the feel of sweetness comes from the awareness inside it. In the same way, the feeling of 'I,' of difference, and of the world and its elements have all unfolded from that awareness.

svato yadātmadṛṣadaścittvātkāṭhinyavedanam | tadahaṃtādi bhedādi deśakālāditāṃ gatam || 4 ||

By itself, within a stone, the feel of hardness comes from the awareness inside it. In the same way, the feeling of 'I,' of difference, and of place and time have come to exist in just this way.

svato yadātmaśailasya jñatayā jāḍyavedanam | tadahaṃtādi bhedādi bhuvanādīti saṃsthitam || 5 ||

By itself, within a mountain, the feel of dullness comes through the knowing awareness inside it. In the same way, the feeling of 'I,' of difference, and of the world stands there in just the same way.

svato yadātmato yasya ciddravatvādivartanam | tadāvartādyahaṃtādibhedādyākāritā iva || 6 ||

In water, by its own nature, awareness turns into fluidity, and out of that fluidity into whirlpools. In the same way, that awareness takes the shape of 'I' and of difference, as if it had truly turned into those things.

svato yadātmavṛkṣasya śākhādistasya vedanam | tadahaṃtādi bhedādi bhuvanādīva satsphurat || 7 ||

By itself, within a tree, the branches and the rest are felt as its own. In the same way, the feeling of 'I,' of difference, and of the world shine out, real, like the branches of that very tree.

yadātmagaganasya antaścittvācchūnyatvavedanam | tadahaṃtādi bhedādi bhuvanādīti bhāvanam || 8 ||

Within the sky itself, the feel of empty space comes from the awareness inside it. In the same way, the feeling of 'I,' of difference, and of the world comes to be felt in just the same manner.

yadātmagaganasya antaścittvātsauṣiryavedanam | tadahaṃtādi bhedādi śarīrādi ca dīpitam || 9 ||

Within the sky itself, the feel of hollow space comes from the awareness inside it. In the same way, the feeling of 'I,' of difference, and of the body and the rest, shine out lit up from it.

svato yadātmakuḍyasya nairantaryaṃ nirantaram | tadahaṃtādibhedena cittādvahiriva sthitam || 10 ||

A wall, by its own nature, is unbroken and continuous throughout, without a gap. In the same way, that same continuous reality, through the difference made by the sense of 'I' and the rest, comes to seem as if it stood outside the mind.

svato yadātmasattāyāścittvātsattvaikavedanam | tadahaṃtādi bhedādi cetanānītivatsthitam || 11 ||

Existence itself, by its own nature, has one single feel of simply being, and this comes from awareness. In the same way, the feeling of 'I' and of difference stand there as if they were separate living beings.

antarātmaprakāśasya svato yadavabhāsanam | tadahaṃtādi cittvādi jīva ityeva veda saḥ || 12 ||

The inner light of the Self shines out by its own nature. That very shining, taken as the feeling of 'I' and the feeling of being aware, is what a person then knows as 'a living being.'

antarasti yadātmendōściddrūpaṃ ciddrasāyanam | svata āsvāditaṃ tena tadahaṃtādinoditam || 13 ||

Within the moon of the Self there is its own true nature, pure awareness, a nectar of consciousness. That nectar, tasted by the Self itself, rises up as the feeling of 'I' and the rest.

paramātmaguḍasyāntaryaccitsvādūdayātmakam | tadevāsvādyate tena svato'haṃtādi nāntare || 14 ||

Within the jaggery of the Supreme Self, a sweetness of awareness rises up on its own. It is that very sweetness that is tasted, and so the feeling of 'I' is not something separate from it.

paramātmamaṇeścittvādyadantaḥ kacanaṃ svayam | cetanātmapade cāntarahamityādi vetyasau || 15 ||

The jewel of the Supreme Self shines from within by its own awareness. And it is in that very state of being a conscious self that it knows, from within, the thought 'I,' and all that follows from it.

na ca kiṃcana vetti antarvedyasyāsaṃbhāvādiha na cāsvādayati svādu svādyasyāsaṃbhāvādayam || 16 ||

And yet it really knows nothing within, because there is no separate thing there to be known. And it tastes no sweetness either, because there is no separate thing there to be tasted.

na ca kiṃciccinotyantaścetyasyāsaṃbhāve sati vindate na ca vā kiṃcidvedyasyāsaṃbhāvādasau || 17 ||

And it perceives nothing within itself either, because there is nothing there that could be perceived. And it finds nothing, because there is nothing there that could be found.

asadābhāsa evātmā ananto bharitākṛtiḥ sthitaḥ sadaivaikaghano mahāśaila ivātmani || 18 ||

The Self only seems to hold what is unreal within it. In truth it is endless, whole and complete, standing forever as one single solid mass, like a great mountain resting within itself.

anayā tu vacobhaṅgyā mayā te raghunandana nāhaṃtādijagattādibhedostīti nidarśitam || 19 ||

With this manner of speaking, Raghunandana, I have shown you that there is no real difference made of 'I,' of the world, and the rest.

na cittamasti no cetā na jagattādivibhramaḥ vṛṣṭamūkāmbudasitaṃ śāntaṃ śāmyati kevalam || 20 ||

There is no mind, no perceiver, and no confusion made of the world and the rest. Like a silent rain cloud that has poured out its rain and turned clear, everything that is at peace simply settles into peace alone.

yathāvartāditāmeti dravatvādvāri vāriṇi | tadāhaṃtāditāmeti jñaptā jñaptau jña ātmani || 21 ||

Just as water, because of its own fluidity, takes the shape of a whirlpool and the rest within water itself, so too the knower, within its own knowing, takes the shape of 'I' and the rest, within the Self.

yathā dravatvaṃ payasi yathā spandaḥ sadāgatau | ahaṃtādeśakālādi tathā jñe jñaptimātrake || 22 ||

As fluidity exists in water, as movement exists in the ever-blowing wind, so the feeling of 'I,' of place, of time, and the rest exist in the knower, in the bare act of knowing itself.

jño jñatāyāṃ śiva jñānaṃ jānāti jñānabṛṃhayā | jñāyate'haṃtadi jñena jīvādītyabhijīvanaiḥ || 23 ||

The knower, who is Shiva, comes to know knowledge in the state of knowing, through the growing of that very knowledge. Through that knower, the feeling of 'I' becomes known as 'a living being' and the rest, through the very things that make it feel alive.

yathodeti yayā'jñasya tṛptirjñānena yādṛśī | ananye vānyatā buddhā sa tathā jṛmbhate tayā || 24 ||

Just as some kind of satisfaction rises up for an ignorant person through whatever knowledge he gains, so too, where there is truly no other thing at all, the mere idea of 'another' unfolds and grows in that very same way.

jīvanaṃ jñātatā jñātā jīvanaṃ jīvajīvanam | atyantamasti no bhedaścidrūpatve jñajīvayoḥ || 25 ||

Life is simply being known, the knower is life, and the living being's life is that very same knowing. Between the knower and the living being there is, in their true nature as awareness, no difference at all.

yathā jñajīvayornāsti bhedo nāma tathaitayoḥ | bhedo'sti na jñśivayorvidhdi śāntamakhaṇḍitam || 26 ||

Just as there is truly no difference between the knower and the living being, so it is between the knower and Shiva as well, there is no difference at all. Know this as one peaceful, unbroken reality.

sarvaṃ praśāntamajamekamanādimadhyamābhāsvaraṃ svadanamātramacetyacihnam | sarvaṃ praśāntamiti śabdamayī tu dṛṣṭirbodhārthameva hi mudhaiva tadomitīdam || 27 ||

Everything is utterly at peace: unborn, one, without beginning or middle, radiant, a mere taste of itself, beyond thought, without any mark. Yet even this saying, 'everything is at peace,' is only made of words, given only to help one understand; and even that, and the word Om itself, are said only for that same purpose, in the end empty of any final meaning.
