manaḥ śemuṣyahaṃkārapratibimbairjaḍendriyaiḥ | vāsanāvitatāḥ śūnyā vetālatrāsanodyatāḥ || 2 ||

English

The mind, with reflections of ego and senses, is empty of impressions, like a ghost frightened by a corpse.

3

English

The body, adorned with its own evil nature, may accept or reject the worldly existence, but I am the consciousness.

cito na janmamaraṇe sarvagāyāścitaḥ kila | kiṃ nāma mriyate janturmāryate kena vāpi kim || 5 ||

English

Consciousness does not have birth or death, it is all-pervading. What is the name of the being that dies? Who kills and by what means?

cito na jīvitena arthaḥ sarvātmā sarvajīvitam | kiṃ prāpsyati kadātmaiṣā prāyatā yadi jīvitam || 6 ||

English

The essence of life is not in the mere act of living; the Self is the life of all. What will this self gain if it is merely alive?

jīvyate mriyate ceti kuvikalpakamālinī | kalanā manasāmeva nātmano vimalātmanaḥ || 7 ||

English

One lives and dies, thus creating false imaginations. These are the fluctuations of the mind, not of the pure Self.

English

One who is caught in the ego (ahaṃbhāva) is affected by the dualities of existence and non-existence. The Self has no ego, so how can these dualities affect it?

English

The body is made of flesh and blood, the mind is destroyed by contemplation. All these, including the intellect, are inert. Where does the sense of ego come from?

ātmaṃbhritayā nityamindriyāṇi sthitānyalam | padārthāśca padārthatve kuto'haṃbhāvabhāvanā || 11 ||

English

The senses are always established in the self-sufficient self. Objects are in their objectivity. Why then the notion of 'I'?

guṇā guṇārthe vartante prakṛtau prakṛtiḥ sthitā | sadeva sati viśrāntaṃ kuto'haṃbhāvabhāvanā || 12 ||

English

The qualities function according to their nature. Nature is established in nature. Why then the notion of 'I'?

English

The supreme self, which is all-pervading, present in all bodies, and eternal, is established here as pure consciousness.

evaṃ kimākṛtiḥ ko vā kimādeśaśca kiṃkṛtaḥ | kiṃrūpaḥ kiṃmayaḥ kohaṃ kiṃ gṛhṇāmi tyajāmi kim || 14 ||

English

Thus, what is the form? Who is it? What is the command? What is done? What is the appearance? What is the essence? Who am I? What do I grasp? What do I renounce?

asatyalamahaṅkāre saṃbandhaḥ kasya kena kaḥ | saṃbandhābhāvasaṃsiddhau vilīnā dvitvakalpanā || 16 ||

English

In the false ego, what is the relationship with whom and with what? In the establishment of the absence of relationship, the duality concept dissolves.

evaṃ brahmātmakamidaṃ yatkiṃcijjagati sthitam | sadevāsmi tadevāsmi pariśocāmi kiṃ mudhā || 17 ||

19

English

There is no reality in objects; only the all-pervading Atman exists here. In the true splendor of objects, there is no relationship with anyone.
