śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | evameṣātivitātā durjñānā raghunandana | mahāmohamayī māyā viṣamā pāramātmikī || 1 ||

English

Vasishtha said: O Raghunandana, this vast and difficult to understand Maya, full of great delusion, is uneven and related to the Supreme Self.

2

kva muhūrtadvayasvapnasambhramāllokadṛṣṭatā | kvāneka varṣasambhuktaśvapacāvanipabhramaḥ || 2 ||

English

Where is the worldly perception arising from the confusion of a momentary dream, and where is the earthly delusion experienced for many years by a dog-eater?

kva sambhramopalabdhatvaṃ kva pratyakṣanidarśanam | kvāsatyatvamasandigdhaṃ kva satyapariṇāmitā || 3 ||

English

Where is the attainment of confusion, where is the direct perception, where is the undoubted unreality, and where is the transformation of reality?

ato vachmi mahābāho māyeyaṃ viṣamānvaham | asāvadhānamanasaṃ saṃyojayati saṃkaṭe || 4 ||

English

Therefore, O mighty-armed one, I say that this uneven Maya constantly joins the inattentive mind in danger.

śrīrāma uvāca | evam asya kathaṃ brahman māyācakrasya rodhanam | kuryuḥ pravahato vegāt sarvāṅgacchedakāriṇaḥ || 5 ||

English

Rama said: O Brahman, how can the obstruction of this Maya's wheel, which cuts off all limbs with its swift current, be accomplished?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | asya saṃsārarūpasya māyācakrasya rāghava | cittaṃ viddhi mahānābhiṃ bhramato bhramadāyinaḥ || 6 ||

English

Shri Vasishtha said: O Raghava, know the mind to be the great navel of this worldly form of the wheel of illusion, which causes delusion and is itself deluded.

tasmin dru tam avaṣṭabdhe dhiyā puruṣayatnataḥ | gṛhītanābhivahanān māyācakraṃ nirudhyate || 7 ||

English

When the mind is firmly fixed by the effort of the person, the wheel of illusion, which is driven by the grasped navel, is restrained.

avaṣṭabdhamanonābhimohacakraṃ na gacchati | yathā rajjvāṃ niruddhāyāṃ kīlakaṃ rajjuveṣṭitam || 8 ||

English

The wheel of delusion, whose navel is the unsteady mind, does not move, just as a peg wrapped in a rope does not move when the rope is restrained.

cakrayuddhaikataj jñō'si kasmāj jānāsi nānagha | cakraṃ nābhāvavaṣṭabdhaṃ vaśam āyāti nānyathā || 9 ||

English

O sinless one, you are knowledgeable about the battle of the wheel. Why do you not know that the wheel comes under control only when the navel is fixed, and not otherwise?

cittaṃ nābhimavaṣṭabhya tasmādyatnena rāghava | saṃsāracakraṃ vahanādātmanaḥ parirodhaya || 10 ||

English

Therefore, O Raghava, with effort, fix the mind, the navel, and restrain the wheel of worldly existence from its movement.

etāṃ yuktiṃ vinā duḥkhamanantamitamātmanaḥ | asyāṃ dṛṣṭau kṣaṇādantaṃ gatamevāvalokaya || 11 ||

English

Without this reasoning, the endless sorrow of the self is seen to have gone away in an instant in this view.

cittākramṇamātrāttu paramādauṣadhādṛte | prayatnenāpi saṃsāramahārogo na śāmyati || 12 ||

English

Even with effort, the great disease of worldly existence does not subside without the supreme medicine of controlling the mind.

tasmādrāghava santyajya tīrthadānatapaḥkriyāḥ | śreyase paramāyāntaścittameva vaśaṃ kuru || 13 ||

English

Therefore, O Raghava, abandoning pilgrimages, charity, and austerities, for the ultimate good, control the mind alone.

14

English

The mind, which is the space of endless wandering, is like the space within a pot. Destroy it and enter the form of the infinite space.
