श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | लुठितं श्वपचागारे पुनर्विस्मयमाययौ | गाधेर्मनो हि नायाति तृप्तिमाश्चर्यदर्शने || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | luṭhitaṃ śvapacāgāre punarvismayamāyayau | gādhermano hi nāyāti tṛptimāścaryadarśane || 1 ||

English

Shri Vasistha said: Again, he was amazed to see the scattered remains in the house of the outcaste. Indeed, Gadhi's mind does not find satisfaction in witnessing wonders.

हिन्दी

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: फिर से, उसने चाण्डाल के घर में बिखरे हुए अवशेषों को देखकर आश्चर्य किया। निश्चित रूप से, गाधि का मन आश्चर्यजनक दृश्यों को देखकर संतुष्ट नहीं होता।

तत्रावलोकयामास स्थानानि सदनानि च | कल्पक्षोभविवृत्तानि जगन्तीवाम्बुजोद्भवः || २ ||

tatrāvalokayāmāsa sathānāni sadanāni ca | kalpakṣobhavivṛttāni jagantīvāmbujodbhavaḥ || 2 ||

English

There, he observed the places and dwellings, which were as if shaken by the end of the world, like the universe arising from a lotus.

हिन्दी

वहाँ, उसने उन स्थानों और निवासों को देखा, जो कल्प के अंत से हिले हुए थे, मानो कमल से उत्पन्न ब्रह्मांड की तरह।

उवाच स्वात्मनैवेदमरण्ये लुठितालये | शुष्कास्थिमालावलिते पिशाचक इव द्रुमे || ३ ||

uvāca svātmanaiveidamarṇye luṭhitālaye | śuṣkāsthimālāvalite piśācaka iva drum || 3 ||

English

He said to himself in the forest, in the scattered abode, adorned with dry bones, like a tree of ghosts.

उसने अपने आप से वन में, बिखरे हुए निवास में, सूखे हड्डियों से सजे हुए, भूतों के वृक्ष की तरह कहा।

इमास्ता मृतमातङ्गदन्तमाला वृतौ कृताः | अद्यापि संस्थिताः कल्पं प्रतिमेरुशिखा इव || ४ ||

imāstā mṛtamātaṅgadantamālā vṛtau kṛtāḥ | adyāpi saṃsthitāḥ kalpaṃ pratimeruśikhā iva || 4 ||

English

These are the garlands of the teeth of the dead elephants, which were made for adornment. Even today, they stand like the peaks of Mount Meru for an eon.

ये मृत हाथियों के दांतों की मालाएँ हैं, जो अलंकार के लिए बनाई गई थीं। आज भी, वे एक कल्प के लिए मेरु पर्वत की चोटियों की तरह खड़ी हैं।

इह तद्वानरीमांसं पक्ववंशांकुरैः सह | भुक्तं पुरासवोन्मत्तैः सह श्वपचबन्धुभिः || ५ ||

iha tadvānarīmāṃsaṃ pakvavaṃśāṅkuraiḥ saha | bhuktaṃ purāsavonmattaiḥ saha śvapacabandhubhiḥ || 5 ||

English

Here, the flesh of that female monkey was eaten along with ripe bamboo shoots, by those who were intoxicated with old wine, along with the outcaste friends.

हिन्दी

यहाँ, उस मादा बंदर का मांस पके बाँस के अंकुरों के साथ खाया गया, जो पुरानी शराब से मतवाले थे, चाण्डाल मित्रों के साथ।

आलिङ्ग्य श्वपचश्यामामिह केसरिचर्मणि | सुप्तमापीय मैरेयं तिक्तं गजमदेन च || ६ ||

āliṅgya śvapacaśyāmāmiha kesaricarmaṇi | suptamāpīya maireyaṃ tiktaṃ gajamadena ca || 6 ||

English

Embracing the dark-complexioned outcaste woman here on the tiger skin, having drunk the bitter liquor mixed with elephant's rut, he slept.

हिन्दी

यहाँ व्याघ्र चर्म पर काली चाण्डालिनी को आलिंगन करके, हाथी के मद से मिली कड़वी मदिरा पीकर, वह सो गया।

कौलेयककुटुम्बिन्यः पिण्याकपलवर्धिताः | इह बद्धा वरत्राभिर्मृतेभरदकाष्ठके || ७ ||

kauleyakakuṭumbinyaḥ piṇyākapalavardhitāḥ | iha baddhā varatrābhirmṛtebharadakāṣṭhake || 7 ||

English

The families of the Kauleyakas, increased by the lumps of flesh, are bound here with ropes to the stakes of the dead.

कौलेयक परिवार, मांस के लोथड़ों से बढ़े हुए, यहाँ मृतकों की खूंटियों से रस्सियों से बंधे हुए हैं।

इह वारणमुक्तानां ददासीत्पिठरत्रयम् | पिनद्धं माहिषेणोग्रचर्मणाम्बुदशोभिना || ८ ||

iha vāraṇamuktānāṃ dadāsītpiṭharatrayam | pinaddhaṃ māhiṣeṇogracarmaṇāmbudaśobhinā || 8 ||

English

Here, the released elephants gave a trio of stools, covered with the fierce buffalo skin resembling a cloud.

यहाँ, मुक्त हाथियों ने एक तिकड़ी पीढ़ा दी, जो बादल जैसे दिखने वाले भयानक भैंस के चर्म से ढंकी हुई थी।

स्थलीष्वेतासु तास्वत्र सह श्वपचबालकैः | चिरं विलुठितं चूतपत्रपुञ्जे पिकैरिव || ९ ||

sthalīṣvetāsu tāsvatra saha śvapacabālakaiḥ | ciraṃ viluṭhitaṃ cūtapatrapuñje pikairiva || 9 ||

English

In these places, along with the outcaste children, he wandered for a long time, like birds in a cluster of mango leaves.

atra tadbālaniḥśvāsaraṇadvamśapravṛttavat | gītaṃ pītaṃ śunīraktaṃ sādhitā śavabhūṣitaḥ || 10 ||

English

Here, with the sound of the children's breaths resonating like the hum of bees, songs were sung, drinks were drunk, and he was adorned with the blood of dogs and corpses.

यहाँ, बच्चों की साँसों की आवाज मधुमक्खियों की भनभनाहट की तरह गूँज रही थी, गीत गाए गए, पेय पिए गए, और उसने कुत्तों और शवों के रक्त से सजाया गया।

अत्र सार्धं कुटुम्बेन जन्यत्रेषु कुटुम्बिना | नृत्तं तत्कृतमुन्नादं कल्लोलैर्जलधाविव || ११ ||

atra sārdhaṃ kuṭumbena janyatreṣu kuṭumbinā | nṛttaṃ tatkṛtamunnādaṃ kallolairjaladhāviva || 11 ||

English

Here, along with the family, the householder performed a dance with a loud noise, like the waves of the ocean.

यहाँ, परिवार के साथ, गृहस्थ ने समुद्र की लहरों की तरह एक ऊँची आवाज वाला नृत्य किया।

अत्रोड्डयनलोलानां काकभासपत्त्रिणाम् | धृतानामन्यदाशार्थं ग्रथितं वंशपञ्जरम् || १२ ||

atrouḍḍayanalolānāṃ kākabhāsapattriṇām | dhṛtānāmanyadāśārthaṃ grathitaṃ vaṃśapañjaram || 12 ||

English

Here, the cage of bamboo is woven for the purpose of capturing other birds, by the crows and herons that are swaying and flying.

यहाँ, कौओं और बगुलों द्वारा, जो लहरा रहे हैं और उड़ रहे हैं, दूसरे पक्षियों को पकड़ने के लिए बाँस का पिंजरा बुना जाता है।

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | evaṃprāyāḥ smarangādhiḥ prāktanīḥ śvapacakriyāḥ | vismayotkampitashirā dhātuśceṣṭāṃ parāmṛśat || 13 ||

English

Śrī Vasishtha said: Thus, remembering the past actions of the outcasts, the wise man, with his head shaking in wonder, contemplated the movements of the elements.

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: इस प्रकार, चाण्डालों के पूर्व कर्मों को याद करते हुए, विद्वान् व्यक्ति, आश्चर्य से सिर हिलाते हुए, तत्वों की गतिविधियों पर विचार करता है।

चचाल तस्माद्दीर्घेण देशात्कालेन कार्यवित् | भूत्मण्डलमुत्सृज्य प्राप देशान्तरं क्रमात् || १४ ||

cacāla tasmāddīrghēṇa deśātkālena kāryavit | bhūtmaṇḍalamutsṛjya prāpa deśāntaraṃ kramāt || 14 ||

English

He moved from that distant land over time, knowing the work, leaving the earthly realm, he reached another land gradually.

हिन्दी

वह उस दूर देश से समय के साथ चला गया, कार्य को जानते हुए, पृथ्वी के मंडल को छोड़कर, धीरे-धीरे दूसरे देश तक पहुँचा।

समुल्लङ्घ्य नदीशैलमण्डलारण्यसंततिम् | आससाद तुषाराद्रिरत्नं किल जनास्पदम् || १५ ||

samullaṅghya nadīśailamaṇḍalāraṇyasaṃtatim | āsasāda tuṣārādriratnaṃ kila janāspadam || 15 ||

English

Crossing the continuous range of mountains and forests, he reached the snowy mountain, which is said to be the abode of people, a jewel.

हिन्दी

नदी, पर्वत और वन की लगातार श्रृंखला को पार करके, वह बर्फीले पर्वत तक पहुँचा, जो लोगों का निवास स्थान है, एक रत्न है।

तत्र प्राप महीपालनगरं नगसंनिभम् | जगद्भ्रमणखिन्नात्मा स्वर्लोकमिव नारदः || १६ ||

tatra prāpa mahīpālanagaraṃ nagasaṃnibham| jagadbhramaṇakhinātmā svarlokamiva nāradaḥ || 16 ||

English

There, he reached the city of the king, which was like a mountain. Tired from wandering the world, he felt as if he had reached heaven, like Nārada.

वहाँ, उसने राजा के नगर को पहुँचा, जो एक पर्वत के समान था| संसार भ्रमण से थका हुआ आत्मा, उसे ऐसा लगा जैसे उसने स्वर्ग प्राप्त कर लिया हो, जैसे नारद|

अथात्मनानुभूतानि दृष्टान्यासेवितानि च | स्थानानि नगरे पश्यन्पप्रच्छ जनमादृतः || १७ ||

athātmanānubhūtāni dṛṣṭānyāsevitāni ca | sthānāni nagare paśyanpapraccha janamādṛtaḥ || 17 ||

English

Then, recalling the places he had experienced, seen, and visited in the city, he respectfully asked the people.

तब, उसने जो स्थान अनुभव किए, देखे, और नगर में घूमे, उन्हें याद करते हुए, उसने आदरपूर्वक लोगों से पूछा|

साधो स्मरसि किंचित्त्वमिह श्वपचमीश्वरम् | यदि जानासि तत्त्वं मे वर्णयाशु यथाविधि || १८ ||

sādho smarasi kiṃcittvamih śvapacamīśvaram | yadi jānāsi tattvaṃ me varṇayāśu yathāvidhi || 18 ||

English

O virtuous one, do you remember anything about the king of the outcastes here? If you know the truth, please describe it to me accurately.

हिन्दी

हे साधु, क्या तुम यहाँ श्वपच राजा के बारे में कुछ याद करते हो? यदि तुम सच्चाई जानते हो, तो कृपया मुझे ठीक से बताओ|

नागरा ऊचुः | अभूदिहाष्टौ वर्षाणि श्वपचो भूमिपो द्विज | राजत्वमर्पितं यस्य नाम मङ्गलहस्तिना || १९ ||

nāgarā ūcuḥ | abhūdihaṣṭau varṣāṇi śvapaco bhūmipo dvija | rājatvamarpitaṃ yasya nāma maṅgalahastinā || 19 ||

English

The citizens said: 'Here, for eight years, there was a king of the outcastes, O Brahmin. The kingdom was bestowed upon him by the name of Mangalahastin.'

हिन्दी

नागरिकों ने कहा: 'यहाँ, आठ वर्षों तक, एक श्वपच राजा था, हे ब्राह्मण| उसका राज्य मंगलहस्तिन नाम से दिया गया था|'

अन्ते च संपरिज्ञातः स प्रविष्टो हुताशनम् | अद्य द्वादशवर्षाणि समतीतानि तापस || २० ||

ante ca saṃparijñātaḥ sa praviṣṭo hutāśanam | adya dvādaśavarṣāṇi samatītāni tāpasa || 20 ||

English

In the end, he was recognized and entered the fire. Today, twelve years have passed, O ascetic.

यं यं पृच्छत्यसौ गाधिर्जनं जातकुतूहलः । तस्य तस्य मुखादेव श्रृणोत्यास्वादयत्यपि || २१ ||

yaṃ yaṃ pṛcchatyasau gādhirjanaṃ jātakutūhalaḥ | tasya tasya mukhādeva śr̥ṇotyāsvādayatyapi || 21 ||

English

Whatever person Gadhi asks, being curious, he hears and enjoys from the mouth of that very person.

जो-जो व्यक्ति गाधि पूछता है, कुतूहल से भरा हुआ, उसी के मुख से सुनता और आनंद लेता है।

अथापश्यत्पुरे तस्मिन्नृपं सबलवाहनम् । देवं चक्रधरं विष्णुं मन्दिरान्निर्गतं बहिः || २२ ||

athāpaśyatpure tasminnṛpaṃ sabalavāhanam | devaṃ cakradharaṃ viṣṇuṃ mandirān nirgataṃ bahiḥ || 22 ||

English

Then he saw in that city the king with his army and vehicles, and the god Vishnu, the bearer of the discus, who had come out of the temple.

तब उसने उस नगर में राजा को देखा, जो सेना और वाहनों के साथ था, और चक्रधारी भगवान विष्णु को, जो मंदिर से बाहर आए थे।

स दृष्ट्वा स्थगिताकाशं चलरेणुपयोधरैः । प्राक्तनीं राजतां स्मृत्वा समुवाचातिविस्मयः || २३ ||

sa dṛṣṭvā sthagitākāśaṃ calareṇupayodharaiḥ | prāktanīṃ rājatāṃ smṛtvā samuvācātivismayaḥ || 23 ||

English

Seeing the sky filled with moving clouds of dust, he remembered the former glory of the kingdom and spoke with great wonder.

आकाश में धूल के घने बादलों को देखकर, उसने राज्य की पूर्व शोभा को याद किया और बहुत आश्चर्य से कहा।

इमास्ताः कीरकामिन्यः पद्मगर्भोपमत्वचः । कनकद्रववर्णिन्यो लोलनीलोत्पलेक्षणाः || २४ ||

imāstāḥ kīrakāminyaḥ padmagarbhopamatvacaḥ | kanakadravavarṇinyo lolanīlotpalekṣaṇāḥ || 24 ||

English

These women are like insects, with skin resembling the interior of a lotus, with a complexion like molten gold, and with eyes like swaying blue lotuses.

ये स्त्रियाँ कीड़ों की तरह हैं, जिनकी त्वचा कमल के अंदर की तरह है, जिनका रंग पिघले सोने की तरह है, और जिनकी आँखें लहराते नीले कमल की तरह हैं।

चामरौघा इमे चन्द्रकरसंपिण्डपाण्डुराः । स्थिरनिर्झरसंकाशाः काशपुष्पचया इव || २५ ||

cāmaraugāḥ ime candrakarasaṃpiṇḍapāṇḍurāḥ | sthiranirjharasaṃkāśāḥ kāśapuṣpacayā iva || 25 ||

English

These chowries are like the moon's rays, white as the moon, and resemble steady waterfalls or clusters of kasha flowers.

हिन्दी

ये चौरियाँ चंद्रमा की किरणों की तरह सफेद हैं, और स्थिर झरनों या काश फूलों के झुंड की तरह दिखती हैं।

कान्ताभिरवधूयन्ते बालव्यजनराजयः | इमास्ता वनवल्लीभिर्दीप्यमाना इवर्द्धयः || २६ ||

kāntābhiravadhūyante bālavyajanarājayaḥ | imāstā vanavallībhirdīpyamānā ivaṛddhayaḥ || 26 ||

English

These nights are adorned by beautiful women, like young vines illuminating the forest.

हिन्दी

ये रातें सुंदर स्त्रियों से सजी हुई हैं, जैसे युवा लताएँ वन को रोशनी दे रही हैं।

इमास्ता मत्तमातङ्गघटा घटितदिक्तटाः | संकल्पपादपा मेरोरिव श्रृङ्गपरम्पराः || २७ ||

imāstā mattamātaṅgaghaṭā ghaṭitadiktatāḥ | saṃkalpapādapā meroriva śṛṅgaparamparāḥ || 27 ||

English

These are like the banks of the directions adorned with intoxicated elephants, like the wish-fulfilling trees of Mount Meru.

हिन्दी

ये मदमस्त हाथियों से सजे दिशाओं के किनारे हैं, जैसे मेरु पर्वत के कल्पवृक्ष।

एते ते यमवारीशकुबेरप्रतिमौजसः | सामन्ता वासवस्येव लोकपाला महीभृतः || २८ ||

ete te yamavārīśakuberapratimaujasaḥ | sāmantā vāsavasyeva lokapālā mahībhṛtaḥ || 28 ||

English

These are like the guardians of the earth, comparable to Yama, Varuna, Kubera, and Indra, the protectors of the world.

हिन्दी

ये पृथ्वी के रक्षक हैं, जैसे यम, वरुण, कुबेर और इंद्र, जो संसार के रक्षक हैं।

इमास्ताः सर्ववस्त्वोघाः सर्वाभिमतदास्तताः | कल्पवृक्षलताकुञ्जसुन्दर्यो गृहपङ्क्तयः || २९ ||

imāstāḥ sarvavastvoghāḥ sarvābhimatadāstatāḥ | kalpavṛkṣalatākuñjasundaryo gṛhapaṅktayaḥ || 29 ||

English

These are the abodes of all desired objects, like the beautiful groves of wish-fulfilling trees.

ये सभी इच्छित वस्तुओं के निवास स्थान हैं, जैसे कल्पवृक्ष के सुंदर झुरमुट।

इदं तत्कीरजनताराज्यं प्राग्भुक्तमद्य मे | आत्मजन्मान्तराचार इव प्रत्यक्षतां गतम् || ३० ||

idaṃ tatkīrajanatārājyaṃ prāgbhuktaṃ adya me | ātmajanmāntarācāra iva pratyakṣatāṃ gatam || 30 ||

English

This kingdom, which I enjoyed in the past, has now become visible to me like a past life experience.

सत्यं स्वप्न इवायं मे जाग्रद्भूतः पुनः स्थितः | न जाने किंकृतोत्थाना मायेयं प्रविजृम्भते || ३१ ||

satyam svapna ivāyam me jāgradbhūtah punah sthitah | na jāne kimkṛtothānā māyeyam pravijṛmbhate || 31 ||

English

This reality seems like a dream to me, appearing again in the waking state | I do not know the cause of this awakening, this illusion is manifesting

हिन्दी

यह सत्य मुझे स्वप्न की तरह लगता है, जाग्रत अवस्था में फिर से प्रकट होता है | मुझे इस जागरण का कारण नहीं पता, यह माया प्रकट हो रही है

अहो नु खलु दीर्घेण मनोमोहेन वल्गता | वैवश्यमुपनीतोऽहं जालेनेव शकुन्तकः || ३२ ||

aho nu khalu dīrgheṇa manomohēna valgatā | vaivaśyamupanīto'haṃ jālēnēva śakuntakaḥ || 32 ||

English

Alas, indeed, by long mental delusion, I am afflicted | I am helplessly brought here, like a bird in a net

हाय, निश्चय ही, लंबे समय से मानसिक भ्रम से मैं पीड़ित हूँ | मैं बेबसी से यहाँ लाया गया हूँ, जैसे कि एक पक्षी जाल में

हा धिक्कष्टमबुद्धं मे मनो वासनया हतम् | पश्यति भ्रमजालानि विततानि शिशोरिव || ३३ ||

hā dhikkaṣṭamabuddhaṃ me mano vāsanayā hatam | paśyati bhramajālāni vitatāni śiśoriva || 33 ||

English

Alas, woe to my ignorant mind, defeated by desire | It sees illusory webs spread out like a child

हाय, मेरे अज्ञानी मन पर दुःख, वासना से पराजित | यह भ्रम के जाल देखता है जो बिछे हुए हैं जैसे कि एक बच्चे के समान

एषा हि माया महती तेन मे चक्रधारिणा | दर्शितेत्यधुना साधु मया स्मृतमखण्डितम् || ३४ ||

eṣā hi māyā mahatī tena me cakradhāriṇā | darśitetyadhunā sādhu mayā smṛtamakhṇḍitam || 34 ||

English

This indeed is the great illusion shown to me by the wheel-bearer | Now I remember it well, unbroken

तदिदानीं तथा यत्नं करिष्ये गिरिकन्दरे | यथाकुसंभ्रमस्यास्य जाने जन्म तथा स्थितिम् || ३५ ||

tadidānīṃ tathā yatnaṃ kariṣye girikandare | yathākusambhramasya'sya jāne janma tathā sthitim || 35 ||

English

Therefore, now I will make such an effort in the mountain cave | So that I may know the birth and existence of this confusion

इति संचिन्त्य नगराद्गाधिस्तस्माज्जगाम ह | कन्दरं प्राप्य शैलस्य तस्थौ विश्रान्तसिंहवत् || ३६ ||

iti saṃcintya nagarādgādhistasmājjagāma ha | kandaraṃ prāpya śailasya tasthau viśrāntasiṃhavat || 36 ||

English

Thus, having thought, Gadhi left the city and went to a cave in the mountain, where he stayed like a rested lion.

इस प्रकार सोचकर गाधि नगर से निकले और पहाड़ की एक गुफा में गए, जहाँ उन्होंने एक विश्राम करने वाले सिंह की तरह रहे।

तत्र संवत्सरं सार्धं पयश्चुलुकभोजनम् | तपश्चक्रे महातेजास्तुष्टये शार्ङ्गधन्वनः || ३७ ||

tatra saṃvatsaraṃ sārdhaṃ payaśculukabhojanam | tapaścakre mahātejāstuṣṭaye śārṅgadhanvanaḥ || 37 ||

English

There, for a year and a half, he performed penance, subsisting on water and grass, to please Shārṅgadhanvana (Lord Vishnu).

हिन्दी

वहाँ, एक साल और आधे साल तक, उन्होंने पानी और घास पर जीवित रहते हुए तपस्या की, शार्ङ्गधन्वन (भगवान विष्णु) को प्रसन्न करने के लिए।

अथास्य पुण्डरीकाक्षः पयोमूर्तिरुपाययौ | प्रसादमुत्पलश्यामः शरदीव महाहदः || ३८ ||
