श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । अथापश्यदसौ गाधिः स्वाधिपीवरया धिया । अन्तर्जलस्थ एवान्तरात्मनात्मनि निर्मले ॥ १ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | athāpaśyad asau gādhiḥ svādhipīvarayā dhiyā | antarjalastha evāntarātmanātmani nirmale || 1 ||
Sri Vasishtha said: Then, while he was still standing in the water, Gadhi saw within his own pure inner self, his mind grown heavy.
श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: तब पानी में खड़े-खड़े ही गाधि ने अपने भारी मन से, अपने शुद्ध भीतरी मन में देखा।
भूतमण्डलपर्यन्तग्रामोपान्तनिवासिनाम् । श्वपचानां स्त्रिया गर्भे स्थितिमात्मानमाकुलम् ॥ २ ॥
bhūtamaṇḍalaparyantagrāmopāntanivāsinām | śvapacānāṃ striyā garbhe sthitimātmānamākulam || 2 ||
He saw his own troubled state, lying in the womb of a woman among the outcastes who lived at the edge of a village at the border of Bhutamandala.

He saw himself weighed down by the burden of living in the womb, in pain, his little body soft and frail, lying asleep against the outcaste woman's heart, as if troubled there in his own filth.

He passed through his twelfth year, and by sixteen he stood grown up, broad-shouldered, his limbs full, like a rain cloud heavy with water.

सारमेयपरीवारं विहरन्तं वनाद्वनम् । निघ्नन्तं मृगलक्षाणि पौलिन्दीं स्थितिमागतम् ॥ ७ ॥
sārameyaparīvāraṃ viharantaṃ vanādvanam| nighnantaṃ mṛgalakṣāṇi paulindīṃ sthitimāgatam || 7 ||
Surrounded by a pack of dogs, he roamed from forest to forest, killing countless deer, taking up the life of the Pulindas, the hunting people of the forest.

Then an outcaste woman clung to him as her beloved, like a dark tamala creeper, her breasts like clusters of flowers on it, her hands like fresh new shoots.
फिर एक चांडाल स्त्री उसे अपने प्रिय की तरह ऐसे लिपट गई जैसे कोई काली तमाल की लता, उसके स्तन मानो लता के फूलों के गुच्छे थे और उसके हाथ मानो नई कोंपलें।
श्यामया मलिनाकारदशनामलमालया । वनपल्लवया भूरिविलासवलिताङ्गया ॥ ९ ॥
śyāmayā malinākāradanśanāmalamālayā| vanapallavayā bhūrivilāsavalitāṅgayā || 9 ||
She was dark, and her look was soiled, but her teeth were an unblemished white row; she wore forest sprigs as ornaments, her limbs full of grace and movement.

He sported with her at the edge of the forest, she his new beloved, he dark, she dark, like a dark bee with his mate among blossoming flowers.

He rested in forest groves and slept in mountain caves, hid himself among heaps of leaves, and made his home in the thickets.
वह जंगल की कुंजों में विश्राम करता, पहाड़ की गुफाओं में सोता, पत्तों के ढेरों में छिप जाता, और झाड़ियों में अपना घर बना लेता।
किंकिरातावतंसाढ्यं यूथिकास्त्रग्विभूषितम् । केतकोत्तंससुभगं सहकारस्रगाकुलम् ॥ १३ ॥
kiṅkirātāvataṃsāḍhyaṃ yūthikāstragvibhūṣitam | ketakottaṃsasubhagaṃ sahakārasragākulam || 13 ||
Rich with a crest of kimkirata blossoms, adorned with a garland of jasmine, lovely with a crown of ketaki flowers, wrapped in a garland of mango blossoms.
वह किंकिरात फूलों के मुकुट से सजा हुआ, चमेली की माला पहने, केतकी फूलों के मुकुट से सुंदर, और आम की मंजरी की माला से लिपटा हुआ था।
लुलितं पुष्पशय्यासु भ्रान्तमद्रितटीषु च । तज्ज्ञं काननकोशेषु बहुज्ञं मृगमारणे ॥ १४ ॥
lulitaṃ puṣpaśayyāsu bhrāntamadritaṭīṣu ca | tajjñaṃ kānanakośeṣu bahujñaṃ mṛgamāraṇe || 14 ||
He rolled about on beds of flowers, wandered over mountain slopes, knew every hidden corner of the forest, and was skilled at hunting deer.
वह फूलों की सेज पर लोटता, पहाड़ी ढलानों पर भटकता, जंगल के हर छिपे कोने को जानता था, और हिरणों के शिकार में बहुत निपुण था।
प्रसूतमथ शैलेषु पुत्रान्निजकुलाङ्कुरान् । अत्यन्तविषमोदन्तान्खदिरः कण्टकानिव ॥ १५ ॥
prasūtamatha śaileṣu putrānnijakulāṅkurān | atyantaviṣamodantānkhadiraḥ kaṇṭakāniva || 15 ||
Then, in the mountains, he fathered sons, shoots of his own line, harsh and hard in nature, like a khadira acacia tree putting out thorns.
फिर पहाड़ों में उसने पुत्र जने, जो उसी के कुल की कोंपलें थे, स्वभाव से बहुत कठोर, जैसे खैर का पेड़ कांटे उगाता है।
कलत्रवन्तं संपन्नं स्थितं प्रक्षीणयौवनम् । शनैर्जर्जरतां यातं वृष्टिहीनमिव स्थलम् ॥ १६ ॥
kalatravaṃtaṃ saṃpannaṃ sthitaṃ prakṣīṇayauvanam | śanairjarjaratāṃ yātaṃ vṛṣṭihīnamiva sthalam || 16 ||
He became a man with a wife, and stood there as his youth faded; slowly he grew feeble and worn, like dry ground without rain.
वह पत्नी वाला गृहस्थ बन गया, और वहीं रहते हुए उसकी जवानी ढलने लगी; धीरे-धीरे वह जर्जर और कमज़ोर होता गया, जैसे बिना बारिश के सूखी ज़मीन।
ततो भूतग्रहग्रामजन्मदेशमुपेत्य तम् । संस्थितं मठिकां पर्णैः कृत्वा दूरे मुनीन्द्रवत् ॥ १७ ॥
tato bhūtagrahagrāmajanmadēśamupētya taṃ | saṃsthitaṃ maṭhikāṃ parṇaiḥ kṛtvā dūrē munīndravat || 17 ||
Then he went to that remote village of his birth, and settled there; he built himself a hut of leaves, away from others, like a great sage.
फिर वह अपने जन्म की उसी दूर बस्ती में गया, और वहीं बस गया; उसने पत्तों की एक झोंपड़ी बनाई, सबसे दूर, किसी बड़े ऋषि की तरह।
जराजरठतां यातं स्वदेहसमपुत्रकम् । जीर्णंप्रायरसश्वभ्रतमालतरुसंनिभम् ॥ १८ ॥
jarājaratāṃ yātaṃ svadēhasamaputrakam | jīrṇaṃprāyarasaśvabhratamālatarusaṃnibham || 18 ||
He sank into the weakness of old age, his sons now grown up like other selves beside him, and he himself had become like an old tamala tree, its sap almost gone, hollow at the core.
वह बुढ़ापे में बहुत कमज़ोर और जर्जर हो गया, उसके बेटे अब उसी की तरह बड़े होकर दूसरे रूप में खड़े थे, और वह खुद एक पुराने तमाल के पेड़ जैसा हो गया था, जिसका रस लगभग सूख चुका हो और जो अंदर से खोखला हो।

He lived out a full outcaste household life with many kinsmen; his name, its meaning, and his very words were all harsh, yet he rose to the height of standing among them.

Then Gadhi saw again: that man, now old and living among the outcastes, had a wife who kept his own mind free of confusion.

Death carried his wife off completely, and she was gone as swiftly as a downpour of rain sweeps away a heap of forest leaves.

pralapatyeka evāsāvaṭavyāṃ duḥkhakarśitaḥ | viyūtha iva sāraṅgo vigatāstho'śrulocanaḥ || 22 ||
Alone, he wailed in the forest, wasted away with grief, like a deer cut off from its herd, careless of everything, his eyes streaming with tears.
अकेला, वह जंगल में विलाप करता रहा, दुख से घुला जा रहा था, जैसे झुंड से बिछड़ा हुआ हिरण, हर चीज़ से बेपरवाह, उसकी आंखों से आंसू बहते रहे।

After passing a few days there, his mind overwhelmed by grief, he left his own land, as a bird leaves a lake whose lotuses have withered.
वहां कुछ दिन बिताने के बाद, दुख से भरे मन के साथ, उसने अपनी ज़मीन छोड़ दी, जैसे कोई पक्षी उस झील को छोड़ देता है जिसके कमल सूख चुके हों।

He wandered through many lands, careless of everything, lost in anxious thought, as if driven on by some other will, like a cloud driven by the wind.

One day, as he wandered, he came to a splendid city in the land of the Kiras, the way a sky-wanderer roaming through empty space might come upon an actual heavenly chariot in the sky.
घूमते-घूमते वह एक दिन कीर देश की एक शानदार नगरी में जा पहुँचा, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे आकाश में घूमता कोई खेचर अचानक असली विमान देख ले।
नृत्यद्रत्नांशुकच्छन्नमार्गवृक्षलताङ्गनम् । आगुल्फाकीर्णकुसुमं चन्दनागुरुसुन्दरम् ॥ २६ ॥
nṛtyadratnāṃśukacchannamārgavṛkṣalatāṅganam | āgulphākīrṇakusumaṃ candanāgurusundaram || 26 ||
Its roadside trees, creepers and bowers were hidden under fluttering silks bright as jewels, flowers lay strewn on the ground up to the ankle, and the whole city was made beautiful with the scent of sandalwood and aloe wood.
वहाँ रास्ते के पेड़, लताएँ और कुंज रत्नों-सी चमकती फहराती रेशमी चादरों से ढके थे, ज़मीन पर टख़नों तक फूल बिछे थे, और पूरा नगर चंदन और अगर की खुशबू से सुंदर बना हुआ था।
सामन्तैर्ललनाभिश्च नागरैश्च निरन्तरम् । स्वर्गमार्गोपमं राजमार्गमध्यमवाप सः ॥ २७ ॥
sāmantairlalanābhiśca nāgaraiśca nirantaram | svargamārgopamaṃ rājamārgamadhyamavāpa saḥ || 27 ||
He came into the middle of the royal road, packed without a break with vassal chiefs, women and townsfolk, a road as fine as the path to heaven.
वह राजमार्ग के बीचोबीच पहुँचा, जो लगातार सामंतों, स्त्रियों और नगरवासियों से भरा हुआ था, ठीक स्वर्ग जाने वाले मार्ग जैसा सुंदर।

There he saw an auspicious elephant, housed in a mansion built of gems and jewels, swaying as it moved, like the great mountain of the gods on the move.
वहाँ उसने एक शुभ हाथी देखा, जो रत्नों और मणियों से बने भवन में रखा गया था, और चलते समय इस तरह डोलता था जैसे देवताओं का महान पर्वत खुद चल पड़ा हो।

The king had died, and the elephant was wandering here and there in search of a king, like a connoisseur of gems roaming about in search of a jewel, eager to see the wish-granting stone.
राजा मर चुका था, और वह हाथी नए राजा की खोज में इधर-उधर घूम रहा था, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे कोई रत्न-पारखी किसी मणि की तलाश में घूमता है, चिंतामणि को देखने की चाह में।

The outcaste looked long at that elephant with eyes wide with wonder, the elephant like a mountain that had somehow begun to move.
उस चांडाल ने कौतूहल से भरी आँखों से उस हाथी को देर तक देखा, जो मानो कोई चलता-फिरता पर्वत हो।
आलोकयन्तमादाय तं करेण स वारणः । स्वकटेऽयोजयन्मेरुस्तटेऽर्कमिव सादरम् ॥ ३१ ॥

The elephant took him up with its trunk as he stood watching, and set him respectfully on its own back, the way Mount Meru might respectfully hold the sun on its slope.

When he had climbed onto the elephant's back, victory drums sounded on every side, like the great oceans roaring when the cloud of the world's end rises into the sky.

The king shone, filling every direction, while the crowd's shout of victory, victory rose up, like the noise of birds that have just woken.
राजा हर दिशा में छा जाने वाली आभा से चमक उठा, और लोगों की जय हो, जय हो की पुकार यूँ उठी जैसे अभी-अभी जागे पक्षियों का कलरव।

Then came a great roar from the crowds of court bards, like the sound of oceans whose waters are churned along the shoreline.
फिर दरबारी भाटों की भीड़ से घना कोलाहल उठा, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे किनारे से टकराते हुए समुद्र की लहरों की गड़गड़ाहट।
तं तत्रावरयामासुर्मण्डनार्थं वराङ्गनाः । क्षीरोदगतविभ्रान्ता लहर्य इव मन्दरम् ॥ ३५ ॥
taṃ tatrāvarayāmāsurmaṇḍanārthaṃ varāṅganāḥ | kṣīrodagatavibhrāntā laharya iva mandaram || 35 ||

वहाँ सुंदर स्त्रियाँ उसे सजाने के लिए उसके चारों ओर घिर आईं, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे क्षीरसागर से उठी लहरें मंदराचल पर्वत के चारों ओर लहराती हैं।
मानिन्यस्तं गुणप्रोतैर्नानारत्नैरपूरयन्। नानाप्रभाप्रभातार्का वेला इव तटाचलम् ॥ ३६ ॥
māninyastam guṇaprotaisnānāratnairapūrayan| nānāprabhāprabhātārkā velā iva taṭācalam || 36 ||
Proud, beautiful women covered him with strings strung with many kinds of gems, the way the shore, bright with the many-colored glow of the rising sun, covers a mountain by the sea.
घमंडी सुंदरियों ने उसे तरह-तरह के रत्नों से गुँथे हार पहनाकर ढँक दिया, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे उगते सूरज की रंग-बिरंगी चमक से भरा किनारा समुद्र के पास खड़े पर्वत को ढँक लेता है।
विचित्रवर्णसौगन्ध्यैः पुष्पैरावलयन्स्त्रियः। वनं मधुश्रिय इव तं लोलकरपल्लवाः ॥ ३८ ॥
vicitravarṇasaugandhyaiḥ puṣpairāvalayanstriyaḥ| vanam madhuśriya iva tam lolakarapallavāḥ || 38 ||
Women, their hands as restless as young shoots, wound flowers of many colors and scents around him, the way the beauty of spring wreathes a forest.
स्त्रियों ने, जिनके हाथ कोमल नई कोंपलों जैसे चंचल थे, तरह-तरह के रंग और खुशबू वाले फूल उसके चारों ओर लपेट दिए, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे वसंत की शोभा किसी जंगल को लपेट लेती है।
नानावर्णरसामोदैस्तास्तमाशु विलेपनैः। अलेपयन्प्रभाजालैर्नगोऽभ्रमिव धातुभिः ॥ ३९ ॥
nānāvarṇarasāmodaistāstamāśu vilepanaiḥ| alepayanprabhājālairnago'bhraṃiva dhātubhiḥ || 39 ||
They quickly anointed him with pastes of many colors, tastes and scents, the way a mountain colors the clouds above it with the glow of its many minerals.
उन्होंने जल्दी-जल्दी उसे तरह-तरह के रंग, स्वाद और खुशबू वाले उबटन से लीप दिया, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे कोई पर्वत अपनी रंग-बिरंगी धातुओं की चमक से ऊपर के बादलों को रंग देता है।
रत्नकाञ्चनकान्तोऽसावाददे चित्तमाततम्। संध्याभ्रतारेन्दुनदीव्याप्तं मेरुरिवाम्बरम् ॥ ४० ॥
ratnakāñcanakānto'sāvādade cittamātatam| sandhyābhratārendunadīvyāptaṃ merurivāmbaram || 40 ||
Bright with jewels and gold, he captured every heart completely, the way Mount Meru, filled with twilight clouds, stars, the moon and the heavenly river, captures the whole sky.
रत्नों और सोने से चमकता हुआ वह सबका मन पूरी तरह मोह लेता था, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे संध्या के बादलों, तारों, चाँद और आकाश-गंगा से भरा मेरु पर्वत पूरे आकाश को मोह लेता है।
भूषितः सविलासाभिर्बालवल्लीभिरावृतः। रत्नपुष्पांशुकाकीर्णः कल्पवृक्ष इवाबभौ ॥ ४१ ॥
bhūṣitaḥ savilāsābhirbālavallībhirāvṛtaḥ| ratnapuṣpāṃśukākīrṇaḥ kalpavṛkṣa ivābabhau || 41 ||
Dressed and adorned, surrounded by playful young women graceful as vines, covered with jeweled flowers and silks, he shone like the wish-granting tree of paradise.
सज-धज कर, बेलों-सी सुकुमार चंचल युवतियों से घिरा और रत्नजड़ित फूलों तथा रेशमी वस्त्रों से लदा हुआ, वह कल्पवृक्ष जैसा दमक रहा था।
तादृशं तमुपाजग्मुः परिवारसमन्विताः । सर्वाः प्रकृतयः फुल्लं मार्गद्रुममिवाध्वगाः ॥ ४२ ॥
tādṛśaṃ tamupājagmuḥ parivārasamanvitāḥ | sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ phullaṃ mārgadrumamivādhvagāḥ || 42 ||
All his subjects, each with their own retinue, came to him just as he was, the way travelers come to a flowering tree beside the road.
उसके सारे प्रजाजन अपने-अपने लाव-लश्कर सहित उसी रूप में उसके पास आए, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे राही रास्ते के फूले हुए पेड़ के पास आ जुटते हैं।
ता एनमासने सैंहे तत्राभिषिषिचुः क्रमात् । तस्मिन्नेव गजे शक्रमैरावत इवामराः ॥ ४३ ॥
tā enamāsane saiṃhe tatrābhiṣiṣicuḥ kramāt | tasminneva gaje śakramairāvata ivāmarāḥ || 43 ||

फिर उन्होंने विधिपूर्वक उसी हाथी पर रखे सिंहासन पर उसका राजतिलक किया, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे देवता ऐरावत हाथी पर इंद्र का अभिषेक करते हैं।
एवं स श्वपचो राज्यं प्राप कीरपुरान्तरे । आरण्यं हरिणं पुष्टमप्राणमिव वायसः ॥ ४४ ॥
evaṃ sa śvapaco rājyaṃ prāpa kīrapurāntare | āraṇyaṃ hariṇaṃ puṣṭamaprāṇamiva vāyasaḥ || 44 ||
In this way the outcaste won the kingdom in the city of Kira, the way a crow might come upon a fat forest deer lying dead.
इस तरह उस चांडाल को कीर नगरी में राजपाट मिल गया, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे किसी कौवे को जंगल में पड़ा हुआ एक मोटा-ताज़ा मरा हिरण मिल जाए।
कीरीकरतलाम्भोजप्रमृष्टचरणाम्बुजः । सर्वाङ्गे कुङ्कुमालेपैः संध्याम्बुधरशोभनः ॥ ४५ ॥
kīrīkaratalāmbhojapramṛṣṭacaraṇāmbujaḥ | sarvāṅge kuṅkumālepaiḥ saṃdhyāmbudharashobhanaḥ || 45 ||
His lotus feet were rubbed smooth by the lotus hands of the women of Kira, and his whole body, smeared with saffron paste, shone like an evening raincloud.
उसके कमल-से पैर कीर देश की स्त्रियों के कमल-से हाथों से सहलाए जाते थे, और उसका पूरा शरीर केसर के लेप से लिपटा हुआ संध्या के बादल जैसा चमकता था।
जज्वाल कीरनगरे नागरीगणवानसौ । सिंहीगणयुतः सिंहो यथा कुसुमिते वने ॥ ४६ ॥
jajvāla kīranagare nāgarīgaṇavānasau | siṃhīgaṇayutaḥ siṃho yathā kusumite vane || 46 ||
Surrounded by crowds of the city's women, he blazed in the city of Kira, like a lion with his pride of lionesses in a forest full of flowers.
नगर की स्त्रियों की भीड़ से घिरा हुआ, वह कीर नगरी में यूँ दमक रहा था जैसे फूलों से लदे जंगल में सिंहनियों के झुंड के साथ कोई सिंह।
हरिहतकरिकुम्भोन्मुक्तमुक्ताकलापप्रविरचितशरीरः शान्तचिन्ताविषादः। अरमत सह सद्भिस्तत्र भोगैः सरस्यां रविकरमदतप्तो वारिपूरैरिवेभः ॥ ४७ ॥
harīhatakarikumbhōnmūktamuktākalāpapraviracitaśarīraḥ śāntacintāviṣādaḥ| aramata saha sadbhistatra bhogaiḥ sarasyāṃ ravikaramadataptō vāripūrairivēbhaḥ || 47 ||
His body was decked with strings of pearls that had fallen from the foreheads of elephants killed by lions, and his grief and anxiety were now stilled. He took his pleasure there at the lake together with good people, the way an elephant scorched by the sun's heat delights in floods of water.
उसका शरीर उन हाथियों के माथे से गिरे मोतियों की लड़ियों से सजा था जिन्हें सिंहों ने मार डाला था, और अब उसका शोक और बेचैनी शांत हो चुकी थी। वह वहाँ तालाब पर अच्छे लोगों के साथ सुख भोगता था, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे धूप से तपा हुआ हाथी पानी की बाढ़ में सुख पाता है।
परिविसृतनृपौजाः सर्वदिक्संस्थिताज्ञः कतिपयदिवसेहासिद्धदेशव्यवस्थः। प्रकृतिभिरलमूढाशेषराजन्यभारः स गवल इति नाम्ना तत्र राजा बभूव ॥ ४८ ॥
parivisṛtanṛpaujāḥ sarvadiksaṃsthitājñaḥ katipayadivasehāsiddhadeśavyavasthaḥ| prakṛtibhiralamūḍhāśeṣarājanyabhāraḥ sa gavala iti nāmnā tatra rājā babhūva || 48 ||
His royal power spread on every side, his command was set up in every direction, and within a few days he had settled the order of the whole land. With his subjects fully bearing the entire weight of royal rule, he became king there under the name Gavala.
उसका राजतेज चारों ओर फैल गया, उसकी आज्ञा हर दिशा में स्थापित हो गई, और कुछ ही दिनों में उसने पूरे राज्य का प्रबंध जमा दिया। प्रजा ने राजकाज का पूरा भार खुद उठा लिया, और वह वहाँ गवल नाम से राजा बन गया।
