15.40.1

śrībhagavānuvāca | sthairyaṃ dehasya dṛṣṭasya jīvitaṃ procyate janaiḥ | dehāntarārthaṃ dehasya saṃtyāgo maraṇaṃ smṛtam || 1 ||

Sri Bhagavan said: People call it life when this body we see stays steady. Giving up this body to get another body is called death.

dvābhyāṃ caivāsi pakṣābhyāmābhyāṃ mukto mahāmate | kiṃ te maraṇamastīha kiṃ vā jīvitamasti te || 2 ||

You are free from both of these, from these two sides, O great-minded one. So what death is there for you here, or what life is there for you?

nidarśanārthametattu mayoktamariamardana | na tvaṃ jīvasi sarvajña mriyase na kadācana || 3 ||

I said this only as an example, O crusher of enemies. You do not live, O all-knowing one, and you never die.

dehasaṃstho'pyadehatvādadeho'si videhadṛk | vyomasanstho'pyasaktatvādavyomeva hi mārutaḥ || 4 ||

Though you live inside a body, you have no body, because you are not attached to it — your sight goes beyond the body. Wind moves inside the sky, but wind is not the sky, because it is not tied to it.

sparśasaṃbodhakāritvāddeha evāsti suvrat | utsedhārodhakatvena khamutsedhasya kāraṇam || 5 ||

O truly disciplined one, the body is said to exist only because it lets you feel touch. In the same way, empty space is called the cause of height, only because it puts up no resistance to things rising in it.

prabuddho jñātavastutvāddehaḥ kva śamināmiha| idaṃ tvekaṃ paricchinnaṃ rūpamajñeṣu duḥsthitam || 6 ||

The awakened one has known the true nature of things — so where, for those at peace, is there any body at all? This one limited shape sits shakily only in the minds of the ignorant.

sarvadā sarvamevāsi citprakāśaḥ paraikadhīḥ| ko dehaḥ ko'pyadehaste yaṃ gṛhṇāsi jahāsi ca || 7 ||

You are always everything itself, the light of pure awareness, the one supreme mind. What is a body to you, or even bodilessness, that you should take it up or cast it off?

samudetu vasanto vā vātu vā pralayānilaḥ| bhāvābhāvavihīnasya kimabhyāgatamātmanaḥ || 8 ||

Let spring arise, or let the wind of the great dissolution blow — for the self that is beyond both being and non-being, what has actually changed?

praluṭhatsvapi śaileṣu kalpāgniṣu dahatsvapi| vahatsūtpātavāteṣu svātmanyeva hi tiṣṭhati || 9 ||

Even while mountains crumble, while the fires at the end of an age burn, while storm winds of disaster blow, he stays only in his own self.

sarvabhūtāni tiṣṭhantu sarvameva prayātu vā| naśyantu vātha vardhantāmātmanyevābhitiṣṭhati || 10 ||

Let all beings stay as they are, or let everything pass away; let them perish, or let them grow — he remains only in the self.

kṣīyate na kṣayaṃ prāpte vardhamāne na vardhate | na spandate spandamāne dehe'sminparameśvaraḥ || 11 ||

When this body decays, the supreme self within it does not decay; when it grows, that self does not grow; when this body trembles, that self does not tremble.

dehasyāhamahaṃ dehīti kṣīṇe cittavibhrame | tyajāmi na tyajāmīti kiṃ mudhā kalanoditā || 12 ||

When the mind's confusion — thinking 'I belong to the body' or 'I am the one who has a body' — has faded away, why does the useless thought 'I am giving it up' or 'I am not giving it up' still arise, for nothing?

prabuddhāḥ sarvakartāraḥ kariṣyantīha kiṃcana | na tasyākaraṇe nityamakartṛtvapadaṃ gatāḥ || 14 ||

The awakened can do anything, and they still act somewhat here in this world. It is not by refusing to act that they have reached the permanent state of not being the doer.

akartṛtvādabhoktṛtvamarthādeva samāgatam | saṃgṛhītaṃ kilānuptaṃ keneha bhuvanatraye || 15 ||

From not being the doer, not being the one who enjoys the results has followed as a plain matter of course — gathered in, so to speak, though no one anywhere in the three worlds had sown it.

śānte kartṛtvabhoktṛtve śāntireveha śiṣyate | prauḍhimabhyāgatā saiva muktiritiucyate budhaiḥ || 16 ||

When doing and enjoying its results have both grown quiet, only peace is left here. That same peace, once it becomes full and complete, is what the wise call liberation.

prabuddhāścinmayāḥ śuddhāḥ sarvamākramya saṃsthitāḥ | kiṃ tyaktaṃ parigṛhṇantu kiṃ gṛhītaṃ tyajantu vā || 17 ||

The awakened are made of pure consciousness; they are pure, standing spread through everything. What abandoned thing should they now take up, or what thing they hold should they now give up?

grāhyagrāhakasaṃbandhapramitāvayavikramaiḥ | hīnaḥ prameyāvayavaiḥ kiṃ gṛhṇātu jahātu kim || 18 ||

He has no bond between a thing grasped and the one who grasps it, no steps that make up a measured whole, and no parts belonging to a thing to be known. So what should he take hold of, and what should he let go?

grāhyagrāhakasaṃbandhe kṣīṇe śāntirudetyalam | sthitimabhyāgatā śāntirmokṣanāmnābhidhīyate || 19 ||

When the bond between the thing grasped and the one who grasps it fades away, peace rises up in full. That peace, once it becomes steady, is given the name liberation.

tatra sthitāḥ sadā śāntāstvādṛśāḥ puruṣottamāḥ | suṣuptāvayavaspandasādharmyeṇa caranti hi || 20 ||

Best of men, people like you always stay there at peace, and they move about only the way a sleeping person's limbs might stir.

parāvabodhaviśrāntavāsano jagati sthitim | ardhasupta ivehemaṃ tvaṃ paśyātmasthayā dhiyā || 21 ||

Your old desires have come to rest in the highest awakening. So look at this life in the world as if half asleep, watching it with a mind that stays fixed in your own self.

na ramante hi ramyeṣu svātmanyeva gatāśayāḥ | noudvijante'nyaduḥkheṣu svātmanyekarasāyanāḥ || 22 ||

Those whose hearts have settled only in their own self do not take delight even in delightful things; those who rest in the one taste of their own self are not disturbed even by the sufferings of others.

idaṃ kṛtvā karomīdamidaṃ tyaktvedamityalam | iti tattvavidāṃ tāta saṃkalpāḥ saṃkṣayaṃ gatāḥ || 23 ||

'Having done this, now I do that; having left this, now I do that' — enough of such thinking! Dear one, for those who know the truth, all such intentions have come to a complete end.

jāgrati svātmanyi svasthāḥ suptāḥ saṃsārasaṃsthitau | bālavatpravivepante suṣuptasadṛśāśayāḥ || 24 ||

Wide awake in their own self, resting easy there, but asleep to the ways of the world, they move about like little children, their minds like someone in deep sleep.

tvamajitapadavīmupāgato'ntaḥ kamaljavāsaramekameva bhuktvā | guṇagaṇakalitāmihaiva lakṣmīṃ vraja paramāspadamacyutaṃ mahātman || 25 ||

You have already reached, deep inside yourself, the state that no one can conquer, after living through just one single day of Brahma, the lotus born. So now, great soul, go to that highest, unfailing home, right here — the true glory made of every good quality.
