15.34.1

śrībhagavānuvāca | varaṃ guṇanidhe daityakulacūḍāmahāmaṇe | gṛhāṇābhimataṃ bhūyo janma duḥkhopaśāntaye || 1 ||

Sri Bhagavan said: Choose a boon, treasure of virtues, great jewel in the crown of the demon race. Take whatever birth you wish, so your sorrow may end.

prahlāda uvāca | sarvasaṅkalpaphalada sarvalokāntarasthita | yadudāratamaṃ vetsi tadevādiśa me vibho || 2 ||

Prahlada said: Giver of the fruit of every wish, one who dwells inside every world, tell me whatever you know to be the best. Command it, lord.

śrībhagavānuvāca | sarvasaṃbhramasamśāntyai paramāya phalāya ca | brahmaviśrāntiparyanto vicāro'stu tavānagha || 3 ||

Sri Bhagavan said: To calm every confusion completely, and for the highest good, let your inquiry, sinless one, carry on until it ends in rest in Brahman.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ityuktvā ditiputrendraṃ viṣṇurantaradhīyata | kṛtaghargharanirhrādastaraṅgastoyadheriva || 4 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Having said this to the lord of Diti's sons, Vishnu disappeared, the way a wave of the sea vanishes with a gurgling roar.

viṣṇāvantarhite deve pūjāyāṃ kusumāñjalim | pāścātyaṃ dānavastvaktvā maṇiratnapariṣkṛtam || 5 ||

When the lord Vishnu had disappeared, the demon set aside the last handful of flowers meant for worship, adorned with jewels and gems,

padmāsanastho'timudā hyupaviśya varāsanestotrapāṭhavidhāvantaścintayāmāsa cetasā || 6 ||

sitting in the lotus pose on a fine seat, full of great joy, during his recitation of hymns of praise, he reflected within his mind:

vicāravāneva bhavānbhavatviti bhavāriṇādevenokto'smi tenāntaḥ karomyātmavicāraṇam || 7 ||

You alone must hold to this inquiry, so I was told by the god who ends worldly existence. So now, within myself, I take up this inquiry into who I am.

kimahaṃ nāma tāvatsyāṃ yo'sminbhuvanaḍambarevacmi gacchāmi tiṣṭhāmi prayatnenāharāmi ca || 8 ||

First, what indeed am I, the one who, in this whole show of the world, speaks, walks, stands, and works hard to gather things?

jagattāvadidaṃ nāhaṃ savṛkṣatṛṇaparvatamyadbāhyamalamatyantaṃ tatsyāṃ kathamahaṃ kila || 9 ||

First of all, I am not this world, with its trees, its grass, and its mountains. How could I possibly be that, which is completely outside me?

asannabhyudito mūkaḥ pavanaiḥ sphuritaḥ kṣaṇamkālenālpena vilayī deho nāhamacetanaḥ || 10 ||

This body was nothing, then it appeared; it is silent, stirred for a moment by its own breath, and it dissolves after a short time. I am not that; it has no awareness.

jaḍayā karṇaśaṣkulyā kalpyamānaḥ kṣaṇakṣayī | śūnyākṛtiḥ śūnyabhavaḥ śabdo nāhamacetanaḥ || 11 ||

Sound is shaped by the dull shell of the ear; it dies in an instant, has no shape, and is born out of empty space. I am not that; it has no awareness.

tvacā kṣaṇavināśinyā prāpyamaprāpyamapyatha | citprasādopalabdhātmasparśanaṃ nāsmyacetanam || 12 ||

Touch is felt or not felt through skin that dies moment by moment; it is known only by the clear light of consciousness. I am not that; it has no awareness of its own.

baddhātmā jihvayā tuccho lolayā lolasattayā | svalpaspaṇdo dravyaniṣṭho raso nāhamacetanaḥ || 13 ||

Taste is tied to the tongue; it is trivial, unsteady, resting on a restless tongue, barely moving, and dependent on matter. I am not that; it has no awareness.

dṛśyadarśanayorlīnaṃ kṣayikṣaṇavināśinoḥ | kevale draṣṭari kṣīṇaṃ rūpaṃ nāhamacetanam || 14 ||

Sight dissolves between the seen thing and the act of seeing, both of which die moment by moment; it fades away when only the seer is left. I am not that; it has no awareness.

nāsayāpyandhajaḍayā kṣayiṇyā parikalpitaḥ | pelavo'niyatākāro gandho nāhamacetanaḥ || 15 ||

Smell is shaped by the blind, dull nose, which itself dies away; it is faint and has no fixed form. I am not that; it has no awareness.

nirmamo'mananaḥ śānto gatapañcendriyabhramaḥ | śuddhacetana evāhaṃ kalākalanavarjitaḥ || 16 ||

Free of any sense of mine, free of restless thought, at peace, past the confusion of the five senses, I am pure awareness alone, with no parts and beyond all counting.

175.34.17

cetyavarjitacinmātramahameṣo'vabhāsakaḥ | sabāhyābhyantaravyāpī niṣkalāmalasanmayaḥ || 17 ||

I am awareness alone, with nothing left to know; I am the one light that shows up everything, spread through what is outside and what is inside, whole, pure, made of pure being.

anena cetaneneme sarve ghaṭapaṭādayaḥ | sūryāntā avabhāsyante dīpenottamatejasā || 18 ||

By this awareness, all these things, pots and cloths and the rest, up to the sun itself, are lit up, the way a lamp of the finest brightness lights up what is near it.

ā idānīṃ smṛtaṃ satyametattadakhilaṃ mayā | nirvikalpacidābhāsa eṣa ātmāsmi sarvagaḥ || 19 ||

Just now I have remembered this whole truth: I am this self, the shining of undivided awareness, present everywhere.

anenaiteāḥ sphurantīha vicitrendriyavṛttayaḥ | tejasāntaḥprakāśena yathāgnikaṇapaṅktayaḥ || 20 ||

By this awareness, and its light shining from within, the many different workings of the senses flare up here, like a shower of sparks flying from a fire.

anenaietāḥ sphurantīha vicitrendriyapaṅktayaḥ | sarvagena nidāghena yathā marumarīcikāḥ || 21 ||

By this same awareness, these many rows of senses flicker here, the way summer heat spread everywhere throws up mirages in a desert.

anenaietatpadārthānāṃ vastutvaṃ pratipādyate | śuklādiguṇavattvaṃ svaṃ pradīpeneveva vāsasām || 22 ||

By this awareness, the very reality of these things is shown, the way a lamp reveals a cloth's own whiteness and its other qualities.

asāveva hi bhūtānāṃ sarveṣāmeva jāgratām | sarvānubhavitābhūmirātmā mukuravatsthitaḥ || 23 ||

This alone, indeed, is the ground of every experience for all beings that are awake. The self stands there like a mirror.

tasyaikasyāvikalpasya ciddīpasya prasādataḥ | uṣṇo'rkaḥ śiśiraścandro ghano'drirvidrutaṃ payaḥ || 24 ||

By the grace of that one undivided lamp of awareness, the sun is hot, the moon is cool, the mountain is solid, and water flows.

sātatyenānubhūtānāṃ sarveṣāṃ ca jagatsthitau | etatkāraṇamādyaṃ tatkāraṇaṃ nāsya vidyate || 25 ||

Of everything that is steadily experienced through the whole span of the world's existence, this awareness is the first cause, and this cause itself has no other cause.

sātatyenānubhūtānāṃ padārthānāmanena tat| padārthatvamudetyuccaiḥ pratāpeneveva taptatā || 26 ||

Of the things that are steadily experienced, it is through this awareness that their very being-a-thing rises up strongly, the way heat itself gives things their hotness.

anākārātkāraṇācca sarvakāraṇakāraṇāt| etasmādidamutpannaṃ jagacchaityaṃ himādiva || 27 ||

From the formless cause, the cause of all causes, this world has come out of it, the way coldness comes out of ice.

brahmaviṣṇvindrarudrāṇāṃ kāraṇānāṃ jagatsthitau| etatkāraṇamādyaṃ tatkāraṇaṃ nāsya vidyate || 28 ||

Brahma, Vishnu, Indra, and Rudra are themselves causes behind the world's existence, but this awareness is the first cause of all, and this cause has no other cause.

cicchetyadṛṣṭadṛśyādināmabhirvarjitātmane| svayaṃ sakṛdvibhātāya mahyamasmai namo namaḥ || 29 ||

This self of mine is free of names such as consciousness, the seen, the unseen and all the rest. It shines by itself, once and for all. I bow again and again to this self, which is myself.

etasmin sarvabhūtāni nirvikalpacidātmani| guṇabhūtāni bhūteśe tiṣṭhanti viviśanti ca || 30 ||

All beings rest in this being, the unchanging self of pure awareness, the lord of all beings. They exist in it as its qualities, staying in it and entering into it.

yatkilānena kalitaṃ cetanenāntarātmanā | tattadbhavati sarvatra netaratsadapi sthitam || 31 ||

Whatever this conscious inner self conceives, that alone becomes real everywhere. Nothing else exists, even if it looks as though it is there.

yaccitā kalitaṃ kiṃcittadāpnoti nijaṃ padam | yaccitākalitaṃ neha tatsadapyantamāgatam || 32 ||

Whatever awareness conceives reaches its own true place. Whatever awareness does not conceive comes, here, to nothing at all, even if it seems to exist.

ime ghaṭapaṭākārāḥ padārthaśatapaṅktayaḥ | jāgatyo vipulādarśe hyasminvyomani bimbitāḥ || 33 ||

Things like pots and cloth, and all the hundreds of rows of things that make up the world, are only reflections. They appear in this vast mirror, in this sky of awareness.

etadvṛddhaṃ vṛddhatare kṣayi kṣayiṇi jāyate | padārthe sadasaccāpi pratibimbārkavatsthitam || 34 ||

This world grows when the thing it appears in grows, and it fades when that thing fades. It stands in every object, real or not, the way the sun's reflection stands in water.

adṛśyaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ prāpyaṃ galitacetasām | etattaddṛśyate sadbhiḥ paraṃ vyomātinirmalam || 35 ||

No being can see this. Only those whose minds have melted away can reach it. This supreme, utterly pure space is seen only by the wise.

iyamabhyudayaṃ yāti nānādṛśyasumañjarī | ācāracañcarīkāḍhyā etasmātkāraṇadrumāt || 36 ||

The many things we see are like a bunch of flowers, crowded with bees which are our everyday actions. This flower cluster grows out from the tree that is the cause of everything.

asmādiyamudetyuccaiḥ saṃsāraracanācalā | vicitratarugulmāḍhyā śailādiva vanāvalī || 37 ||

Out of this rises the whole structure of the world, tall and unmoving, full of many kinds of trees and bushes, the way a stretch of forest rises up from a mountain.

sarveṣāmavibhinno'sau trailokyodaravartinām | brahmādīnāṃ tṛṇāntānāṃ cidātmā saṃprakāśakaḥ || 38 ||

This awareness, the light that lights up everything, is not separate from anyone living in the three worlds, from Brahma down to a blade of grass. It is the same in all of them.

eko'sāvahamādyantarahitaḥ sarvagākṛtiḥ | carācarāṇāṃ bhūtānāmantaḥ svānubhavaḥ sthitaḥ || 40 ||

I am that one being, with no beginning and no end, whose form reaches everywhere. I am present inside every being, moving or still, as the very experience each of them has of itself.

asya tasya mamemāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca | parisaṃkhyādihīnāni śarīrāṇi bahūni ca || 41 ||

All these bodies, moving and still, that people call his, or that one's, or mine, every one of them, more than can be counted, is really mine.

415.34.41

eko'sāvanubhūtyātmā svānubhūtivaśātsvayam | sarvadṛgdr̥ṣṭr̥dṛśyatvātsahasrakaralocanaḥ || 41 ||

That one alone is the self behind every experience, known only through its own experience, by itself. Because it is the one who sees everything, and is both the seer and the thing seen, it is called the one with a thousand hands and a thousand eyes.

eṣo'sāvahamākāśe sūryadehena cāruṇā | viharāmītareṇāpi vāyudehena vāyunā || 42 ||

I am the one who moves through the sky wearing the bright body of the sun, and I also move as the wind, wearing the body of the wind.

mamaitadvapurānīlaṃ śaṅkhacakragadādharam | sarvasaubhāgyasīmāntaṃ hyasmiñjagati valgati || 43 ||

I also have this dark blue body, carrying a conch shell, a discus and a mace. It is the most beautiful and fortunate of forms, and it moves about in this world.

ahamasmin samudbhūtaḥ padmāsanagataḥ sadā | nirvikalpasamādhisthaḥ parāṃ nirvṛtimāgataḥ || 44 ||

I am also the one born here, always seated on a lotus, deep in unbroken meditation, who has reached the highest peace.

ahaṃ trinetrayā'kṛtyā gaurīvaktrābjaṣaṭpadaḥ | sargānte saṃharāmīdaṃ kūrmo'ṅgapaṭalaṃ yathā || 45 ||

I am also the three-eyed one, always close to Gauri's lotus face like a bee. At the end of each creation I pull this world back into myself, the way a tortoise draws its limbs back into itself.

ahamindreṇa rūpeṇa trilokīmakhilāmimām | pālayāmi kramaprāptāṃ maṭhikāmiva tāpasaḥ || 46 ||

I am also Indra, and in that form I take care of this whole world of three realms, which has come to me in its proper turn, the way a hermit takes care of the hut he has been given.

strīpumānahamevaitatkumāro hyahamityapi | jīrṇo'haṃ dehadhāritvājjāto'haṃ viśvatomukhaḥ || 47 ||

I am both the woman and the man. I am also the child. Because I carry a body, I am the old man too. I am the one who takes birth, with faces turned every way.

ahaṃ tṛṇalatāgulmajālaṃ rasatayā sthitaḥ | utthāpayāmi cidbhūmeḥ kūpo'ntaralatāmiva || 48 ||

I am the sap inside grass, vines and bushes, and through that sap I raise up this whole tangle of plants from the ground of awareness, the way a well makes a vine near it grow up.

svalīlārthamidaṃ cāru jagadāḍambaraṃ tatam | mayābhijātabālena paṅkakrīḍanakaṃ yathā || 49 ||

I have spread out this whole beautiful, grand world only for my own play, the way a child from a good family makes a little toy out of mud, just to play.

mayedamāpyate sarvaṃ sattā māṃ prāpya gacchati | matparityaktametacca sadapyeva na kiṃcana || 50 ||

Everything reaches its existence through me. A thing becomes real only by reaching me. And anything I let go of is nothing at all, even if it seems to exist.

mayi sphāre cidādarśe pratibimbaṃ yadāgatam | tadasti netaradyasmānmattonanyanneha vidyate || 51 ||

I am like a huge mirror made of awareness. Whatever reflection shows up in me is what exists, nothing else does, because apart from me nothing else is here at all.

kusumeṣvahamāmodaḥ puṣpapatreṣvahaṃ chaviḥ | chaviṣvahaṃ rūpakalā rūpeṣvanubhavo'pyaham || 52 ||

I am the scent inside flowers. I am the color inside their petals. I am the beauty of the shape within that color. And I am also the feeling of seeing that shape.

yadyatkiṃcididaṃ dṛśyaṃ jagatsthāvarajaṅgamam | sarvasaṃkalparahitaṃ taccittattvamahaṃ param || 53 ||

Whatever this visible world is, everything in it, moving or still, untouched by any thought, that reality of pure awareness is me, the highest one.

ādyā rasamayī śaktī rasaugho vistṛto yayā | sā yathā dārukuḍyeṣu tathāhaṃ sarvavastuṣu || 54 ||

There is an original power made of sap that spreads the flow of sap through a tree, and that same power stays even in wooden walls made from that tree. In the same way, I am present in everything there is.

paramāṃ tāmahaṃ sarvapadārthāntaravartitām | upetya saṃvidvaicitryaṃ pratanoami svayecchayā || 55 ||

I reach that highest state, present deep inside every single thing, and from there, by my own will, I spread out all the different kinds of experience there are.

ghṛtaṃ yathāntaḥ payaso rasaśaktiryathā jale | cicchaktiḥ sarvabhāveṣu tathāntarahamāsthitaḥ || 56 ||

The way ghee lies hidden inside milk, and the way the power of taste lies hidden inside water, in that same way I lie hidden inside everything, as the power of awareness.

idaṃ jagattrikālasthaṃ citi madhye ca saṃsthitam | cetyopacārarahitaṃ vastujātamivāvanau || 57 ||

This world exists in the past, the present and the future, and it rests inside awareness. To call it a separate thing that awareness looks at is only a manner of speaking. It is like this: many objects simply rest on the ground.

bharitāśeṣadikkukṣistyaktasaṃkocavibhramaḥ | sarvasthaḥ sarvakartā ca virāṭ samrāḍahaṃ sthitaḥ || 58 ||

All directions fill my belly, with nothing left outside it; I have dropped the illusion of being small. I am present everywhere, I am the doer of everything; I stand here as the vast being that fills the universe, its sovereign ruler.

apūrvamanibaddhendramśastradalitāmaram | aprārthitaṃ me saṃprāptaṃ jagadrājyamidaṃ tatam || 59 ||

This unprecedented kingdom of the whole world has come to me though I never sought it - a kingdom unbound by Indra, one where even the immortals were crushed without any weapon, and it stretches out everywhere.

aho nu vitatātmāsmi na māmyapyātmanātmani | kalpāntapavanādhūta ekārṇava ivārṇave || 60 ||

How vast I have become! I cannot find my own limit within myself - like the single ocean of the great dissolution, stirred by that final wind, surging within the ocean itself.

nātmanyantamavāpnomi svasthe'ntaḥ svadite svayam | kṣīravārinidhau paṅguḥ sarīsṛpa iva sphuran || 61 ||

I find no end within myself, resting inside myself, tasting myself - like a crippled, crawling creature stirring in an ocean of milk.

svalpeyaṃ maṭhikā brāhmī jagannāmnī susaṃkaṭā | gajo bilva iva svāṅge na māti vipulaṃ vapuḥ || 62 ||

This little room, made by Brahma and named "the world," is too small and cramped for me - like an elephant that cannot fit its huge body into a bilva fruit.

virin̄cibhavanātpāre tattvānte'pyāharatpadam | prasaratyeva me rūpamadyāpi na nivartate || 63 ||

Beyond Brahma's own world, even past the last of all things, it has planted its foot; my form keeps spreading on and on - even now it does not stop.

ayaṃ nāmāhamityantaḥ kuto niravalambanā | aparyantākṛter eṣā kilāsītsvalpatā mama || 64 ||

This "I" within me - where does it find any ground to stand on, since it has none? My true shape has no limit at all; yet, it seems, this smallness of mine really did exist.

bhavānayamayaṃ cāhamiti mithyaiva vibhramaḥ | kodehaḥ ko'pyadeho vā ko mṛtaḥ kaśca jīvati || 65 ||

"You are this person" and "I am this person" - that is only a mistaken idea. Who really has a body, who has none, who has died, and who is alive?

varākāḥ pelavadhiyo babhūvurme pitāmahāḥ| ye sāmrājyamidaṃ tyaktvā remire bhavabhūmiṣu || 66 ||

My forefathers were pitiful, weak in mind - they gave up this great kingdom and went off to enjoy themselves in the lands of ordinary worldly life.

kveyam kila mahādṛṣṭirbharitā brahmabṛṃhitā| kv sarīsṛpabhīmāśā bhīmā rājyavibhūtibhiḥ || 67 ||

Where indeed is this great vision, so full, so expanded by the ultimate reality? And where is that fearsome, crawling craving that the powers of kingship make so terrible?

anantānandasaṃbhogā paropaśamaśālinī| śuddheyaṃ cinmayī dṛṣṭijayatyakhiladṛṣṭiṣu || 68 ||

This pure vision, made of consciousness, holds endless bliss and supreme peace - it wins out over every other way of seeing.

sarvabhāvāntarasthāya cetayamuktacidātmane| pratyakcetanarūpāya mahyameva namo namaḥ || 69 ||

Salutations, salutations to myself alone - to the one who lives inside every being, whose conscious self is never an object seen by another, whose true form is awareness turned inward.

jayāmyahamajo jāto jīrṇasaṃsārasaṃsṛtiḥ| prāptaprāpyo mahātmāyaṃ jīvāmi ca jayāmi ca || 70 ||

I win - I who am unborn, yet born, the one for whom this worn-out cycle of rebirth is finished. This great self has reached everything worth reaching; I live, and I win.

idamuttamasāmrājyaṃ bodhaṃ saṃtyajya śāśvatam | na rame'hamaramyāsu rājyaduḥkhavibhūtiṣu || 71 ||

I will not give up this supreme, everlasting kingdom of awakening, to enjoy the sorrowful, unpleasant riches of an earthly kingdom.

dāruvāridṛṣanmātre lulito yo dharātale | dhigvarākamanātmajñaṃ taṃ kudānavakīṭakam || 72 ||

Shame on that pitiful, self-ignorant creature - that miserable worm of a demon - who rolled about on the ground fighting over mere wood, water, and stone!

avidyaiakātmabhirdravyairavidyāmayamaṅgakam | ajñena saṃtarpayatā kiṃ nāma guruṇā kṛtam || 73 ||

Feeding a body made of ignorance with things that are nothing but ignorance, that ignorant man kept satisfying it - but what, tell me, did this so-called great man actually get?

varṣāṇi katicitprāpya jagacchrīmaṭhikāmimām | kiṃ nāma prāpaducitaṃ hiraṇyakaśipuḥ kila || 74 ||

Hiranyakashipu got hold of this cramped little room called the world's glory for a few years - but what did he really gain that was worth having?

anāsvādyedamānandaṃ jagadrājyaśatānyapi | samāsvādayatā neha kiṃcidaāsvāditaṃ bhavet || 75 ||

If a person has not tasted this joy, then even after tasting hundreds of world-kingdoms, he would still have tasted nothing at all.

na kiṃcidyena saṃprāptaṃ tenedaṃ paramāmṛtam | saṃprāpyāntaḥ prapūrṇena sarvaṃ prāptamakhṇḍitam || 76 ||

The one who has gained nothing in the world - he is the one who has truly gained this highest nectar. Once he has it, filled within, he has gained everything, complete and undivided.

tyaktvā padamidaṃ mūrkho mitameti na paṇḍitaḥ | uṣṭro hi tyaktasulataḥ kaṇṭakaṃ yāti netaraḥ || 77 ||

A fool leaves this state and settles for something small; a wise man never does. Only a camel gives up a good, sweet vine and turns to a thorn - no other creature does that.

parāṃ dṛṣṭimimāṃ tyaktvā dagdharājye rameta kaḥ | kastyaktvekṣurasaṃ prājñaḥ kaṭu nimbapayaḥ pibet || 78 ||

Who would give up this highest vision to enjoy a burnt-out kingdom? What wise person would give up sweet sugarcane juice to drink bitter neem juice?

mūrkhā eva hi te sarve babhuvurme pitāmahāḥ | imāṃ dṛṣṭiṃ parityajya remire rājyasaṅkaṭe || 79 ||

All my forefathers were nothing but fools - they gave up this vision and went to enjoy themselves in the troubles of ruling a kingdom.

kva phullānandanasthalyāḥ kva dagdhamarubhūmayaḥ | kvemā bodhadṛśaḥ śāntāḥ kva bhogeṣvātmabuddhayaḥ || 80 ||

Where are the blooming pleasure-gardens, and where are the scorched desert lands? Where is this peaceful vision of awakening, and where is the thought that looks for the self in worldly pleasures?

na kimcidapi trailokye yadrājyamapi vāñchate sarvamastyeva cittattve tatkasmānnānubhūyate || 81 ||

There is nothing at all in the three worlds left for even a kingdom to want - everything already exists in the reality of consciousness. So why is it not experienced?

citā sarvasthayā svasthasamayā nirvikārayā sarvayā sarvadā sarvaṃ sarvataḥ sādhu labhyate || 82 ||

Through consciousness - present in everything, resting in itself, the same everywhere, unchanging - through this consciousness that is everything, at all times, everything is truly gained, from every side.

bhāsinī taijasī śaktiramṛtaprāptiraivdavī brāhmī mahattā mahatī śākrī trailokyarājatā || 83 ||

The shining power, the fiery power, the moon's power of reaching nectar, Brahma's greatness, and Indra's great rule over the three worlds.

paramā pūrṇatā śārvī jayalakṣmīśca vaiṣṇavī mānasī śīghragatitā balavattā ca vāyavī || 84 ||

Shiva's supreme fullness, Vishnu's fortune of victory, the mind's swiftness, and the wind-god's strength.

āgneyī dāhakalanā pāyasī rasanirvṛtirmaunī mahātapaḥsiddhirvidyā bārhaspatī tathā || 85 ||

Agni's power to burn, the delight that milk's taste gives, the great success of penance that comes with silence, and likewise Brihaspati's knowledge.

vaimānikī vyomagatiḥ sthiratā cāpi pārvatī | gambhīratātha sāmudrī mairavī ca mahonnatiḥ || 86 ||

The sky-faring power of flying chariots, the mountain's steadiness, the ocean's depth, and Meru's great height.

śamaśrīḥ saugatī saumyā mādirī madalolatā | mādhavī puṣpamayatā vārṣikī ghanaśabditā || 87 ||

The glory of peace, the way of the Buddha, gentleness, wine, the reeling of intoxication, spring, the fullness of flowers, the rains, the sound of thunder.

yākṣī ca māyāmayatā nābhasī niṣkalaṅkatā | śītatāpi ca tauṣārī naidāghī tāpataptatā || 88 ||

The Yakshas, being made of illusion, the sky, having no stain, coldness, frost, summer heat, being scorched by heat.

etāścānyāstathā bahvayo deśakālakriyātmikāḥ | nānākāravikārothāstrikālodarasaṃsthitāḥ || 89 ||

These, and many others like them, have their being in place, time, and action; they arise as changes taking many forms, and they all stay inside the three times: past, present, and future.

vicitrāḥ śaktayaḥ svasthasamayā nirvikārayā | citā kriyante parayā kalākalanayuktayā || 90 ||

All these many strange powers are made by one and the same consciousness, a consciousness that rests only in itself, that never changes, that is supreme, and that carries within it the power to shape all things.

vikalpahīnā citsarvā padārthaśatadṛṣṭiṣu | samamevābhipatati prabhā prābhākarī yathā || 91 ||

This consciousness, whole and free of all thought-constructions, falls equally on the sight of a hundred different things, just as sunlight falls equally everywhere.

tathā samastasaṃsārabṛhadṛśyadaśāśriyam | kālatrayasthāmamalā cicchetati tadātmikā || 93 ||

In the same way, this same stainless consciousness, present through the past, the present and the future, perceives the whole vast show of everything visible in this world, exactly as it is.

tulyakālaparāmṛṣṭā trikālakalanāśatā | anantabhuvanābhogā paripūrṇaiva śuddhacit || 94 ||

Grasping everything at one and the same time, having a hundred workings throughout the past, present and future, reaching over endless worlds, this pure consciousness alone is complete in itself.

sarvāśākośaviśrāntāṃ padārthapaṭalīṃ mahīm | kālatrayehaikalitāṃ yathānubhavati kṣaṇāt || 95 ||

It experiences in a single instant this whole heap of things, this whole world, resting inside every direction, known throughout the past, present and future, exactly as it is.

tulyakālāvabuddhena svādunā kaṭunāpi cit | samena samatāmeti madhunimbānubhūtivat || 96 ||

This consciousness knows the sweet and the bitter at one and the same time, and being itself unmoved, it treats them as the same, like one single awareness tasting both honey and the bitter neem leaf.

tyaktasaṃkalpakalayā sūkṣmayā cidvyavasthayāsarvabhāvānugatayā sattādvaitaikarūpayā || 97 ||

By this subtle working of consciousness, one that has let go of all willing and imagining, that runs through every single thing there is, and that has only one form, the oneness of pure being,

985.34.98

vicitrāpi padārthaśrīranyonyavalitāntarā | tulyakālānubhavanā sāmyenaivānubhūyate || 98 ||

the many-colored glory of things, even though each is woven into the others, is experienced all at once, only as one and the same thing.

bhāvenābhāvamāśritya bhāvastyajati duḥkhatām | prekṣya bhāvamabhāvena bhāvastyajati duṣṭatām || 99 ||

By taking shelter in what does not exist, the thing that seems to exist gives up its power to cause pain. And by seeing the thing that seems to exist through what does not exist, that thing gives up its power to do harm.

1005.34.100

kālatrayamapaśyantyā hīnāyāścetyabandhanaiḥ | citaścetyamupekṣiṇyāḥ samataivāvaśiṣyate || 100 ||

For the awareness that does not even see the past, present and future, that carries no chains tying it to anything it knows, and that pays no attention to anything it knows, only one single sameness is left.

yāti vācāmagamyatvādasattāmiva śāśvatīm | nairātmyasiddhāntadaśāmupayāteva tiṣṭhati || 101 ||

Because words cannot reach it, it seems to pass into a never-ending non-existence. It stands as though it has reached the state the teaching of no-self speaks of.

bhavatyātmā tathā brahma na kiṃciccākhilaṃ ca vā | paramopaśame'līnā mokṣanāmnā parocyate || 102 ||

It becomes the self, and it becomes Brahman too. It is nothing at all, and it is everything too. Resting in the highest peace, this supreme state is called by the name liberation.

saṃkalpakalitā tveṣā mandābhāsatayā jagat | na samyakpaśyatīdaṃ cidṛṣṭiḥ paṭalinī yathā || 103 ||

But this same consciousness, once caught up in imagining, sees the world only faintly and does not see it rightly, like sight covered by a cataract.

īhānīhāmayairantaryā cidāvalitā malaiḥ | sā hi noḍḍayituṃ śaktā pāśabaddheva pakṣiṇī || 104 ||

Consciousness, wrapped inside by the dirt of wanting and not wanting, cannot fly at all, like a bird tied down by a rope.

saṃkalpakalanenaiva ye kecana janā ime | patitā mohajāleṣu vinetrā iva pakṣiṇaḥ || 105 ||

Just by this working of imagining, whatever people there are have fallen into the nets of delusion, like birds without eyes.

saṃkalpajālavalitairviṣayāvaṭapātibhiḥ | padavī gatabādheyaṃ na dṛṣṭā matpitāmahaiḥ || 106 ||

My forefathers, caught up in the net of imagining, always falling into the pit of the senses, never saw this path, free of all trouble.

dinaiḥ katipayaireva sphuritā dharaṇītale | varākāsten te naṣṭā maśakāḥ kuhareṣviva || 107 ||

Within just a few days they sprang up on this earth, and that same cause destroyed those poor creatures, like little gnats dying in a hollow.

yadyajñāsyannime tattvaṃ bhogaduḥkhārthinas tadā | bhāvābhāvāndhakūpeṣu nāpatiṣyannhatāśayāḥ || 108 ||

If these seekers of pleasure and pain had known the truth, their ruined minds would not have fallen into the blind wells of existence and non-existence.

icchādveṣasamutthena dvandvamohena jantavaḥ | dharāvivaramagnānāṃ kīṭānāṃ samatāṃ gatāḥ || 109 ||

Through the delusion of opposites, born of desire and hatred, living beings have become no better than worms buried in a hole in the ground.

īhitānīhitākārāḥ kalanāmṛgatṛṣṇikāḥ | satyāvabodhamedhena yasya śāntāḥ sa jīvati || 110 ||

The one for whom these mirages of imagining, taking the shape of things wanted and unwanted, have been burned away by the fire of true understanding, he alone truly lives.

kutaḥ kilāsyāḥ śuddhāyā avicchinnāmalākṛteḥ | candrikāyā rucaḥ koṣṇāḥ kalaṅkāḥ kalanāścitah || 111 ||

How, indeed, can this pure being, unbroken and stainless, like the light of the moon, carry the warm stains that are only the workings of imagination?

ātmane'stu namo mahyamavicchinnacidātmane | lokālokamaṇe deva cireṇādhigato'syaho || 112 ||

Homage to myself, to the self whose nature is unbroken consciousness. O jewel that lights up every world, seen and unseen, O shining one, ah, after so long, I have found you.

parāmṛṣṭo'si labdho'si prodito'si cirāya ca | uddhṛto'sivikalpebhyo yosi sosi namostu te || 113 ||

I have touched you, I have found you. After so long, you have risen into view. You are pulled free from every thought and doubt. Whatever you are, that is what you are. Homage to you.

mahyaṃ tubhyamanantāya mahyaṃ tubhyaṃ śivātmane | namo devādhidevāya parāya paramātmane || 114 ||

To me, to you, the one without end. To me, to you, whose very nature is pure peace. Homage to the god beyond all gods, the supreme, the highest self.

gataghanaparipūrṇamindubimbaṃ gatakalanāvaraṇaṃ svameva rūpam | svavaṣuṣi mudite svayaṃ svasaṃsthaṃ svayamuditaṃ svavaśaṃ svayaṃ namāmi || 115 ||

I bow to my own true form, the moon's full disc now free of clouds, free of the covering of imagining, resting happily in its own body, standing on its own, risen on its own, ruled by none but itself. I bow to myself, by myself.
