श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | अथेमं परमं राम विज्ञानाभिगमे क्रमम् | श्रृणु दैत्येश्वरः सिद्धः प्रह्रादः स्वात्मना यथा || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | athemaṃ paramaṃ rāma vijñānābhigame kramam | śṛṇu daityeśvaraḥ siddhaḥ prahrādaḥ svātmanā yathā || 1 ||

English

Vasishtha said: Now, O Rama, listen to this supreme method of attaining knowledge, how Prahlada, the lord of the demons, attained perfection through his own self.

वसिष्ठ ने कहा: अब, हे राम, सुनो इस परम विज्ञान की प्राप्ति के क्रम को, जिस प्रकार दैत्यों के स्वामी प्रह्लाद ने अपने स्वयं के द्वारा सिद्धि प्राप्त की।

English

There was in the cave of Patala, a demon named Hiranyakashipu, who had driven away the gods and demons, and who was powerful like Narayana.

पाताल की गुफा में एक असुर था, जिसका नाम हिरण्यकशिपु था, जिसने देवताओं और असुरों को भगा दिया था, और जो नारायण के समान पराक्रमी था।

English

He seized the world of Hari, enjoying the pleasures of the conquered worlds, like a royal swan seizing a large-petaled lotus.

उसने हरि की दुनिया को जब्त कर लिया, जैसे राजहंस एक बड़े पंख वाले कमल को पकड़ता है, जिवन के सुखों का आनंद लेते हुए।

चकार जगतां राज्यं समाक्रान्तसुरासरः | दन्ती निरस्तहंसौघो नलिन्यामलिनामिव || ४ ||

cakāra jagatāṃ rājyaṃ samākrāntasurāsaraḥ | dantī nirastahaṃsaugho nalinyāmalināmiva || 4 ||

English

He established his rule over the worlds, having driven away the gods and demons, like an elephant driving away a flock of swans in a lotus pond.

उसने देवताओं और असुरों को भगाकर लोकों पर अपना राज्य स्थापित किया, जैसे एक हाथी कमल के तालाब में हंसों के झुंड को भगाता है।

तेऽवर्धन्ताचिरेणैव तेजस्यूर्जितबालकाः | दशार्कांशुशतानीव व्योमाक्रान्तिविलासिनः || ५ ||

te'vardhantācirēṇaiva tejasyūrjitabālakāḥ | daśārkāṃśuśatānīva vyomākrāntivilāsinaḥ || 5 ||

English

They grew quickly, those children nourished by the energy of the sun, like ten thousand sunbeams spreading in the sky.

वे तेजी से बढ़े, वे बच्चे जो सूर्य की ऊर्जा से पोषित थे, जैसे दस हजार सूर्य किरणें आकाश में फैलती हैं।

English

Prahlada, the mighty and chief among them, became like the Kaustubha gem among precious jewels.

तेनाराजत पुत्रेण हिरण्यकशिपुर्भृशम् । सर्वसौन्दर्ययुक्तेन वसन्तेनेव वत्सरः || ८ ||

tenaaraajata putrena hiraNyakashipurbhRsham | sarvasaundaryayuktena vasantenaiva vatsarah || 8 ||

English

With his son Prahlada, Hiranyakashipu was greatly pleased, as if the year was adorned with the beauty of spring.

हिन्दी

अपने पुत्र प्रह्लाद के साथ, हिरण्यकशिपु बहुत खुश हुआ, मानो वर्ष वसंत ऋतु की सुंदरता से सजा हो।

अथ पुत्रसहायोऽसौ बलकोशसमन्वितः । आजगाम मदं दैत्यस्त्रिगण्डगलितेभवत् || ९ ||

English

Then, accompanied by his son and endowed with the strength of his army, the demon Hiranyakashipu came with great pride, as if the three worlds were dissolving.

तत्तापाक्रान्तितापेन त्रिजगन्ति विकासिना । कल्पान्तसूर्यगणवन्नवयैव करश्रिया || १० ||

tattaapaakraantitaapena trijaganti vikaasinaa | kalpaantasuuryagaNavannavayaiva karashriyaa || 10 ||

English

With the heat of his pride, he scorched the three worlds, as if they were being burned by the suns at the end of the kalpa.

हिन्दी

अपने गर्व की गर्मी से, उसने तीनों लोकों को जला दिया, मानो कल्प के अंत में सूर्यों द्वारा जलाया जा रहा हो।

अखिद्यन्तास्य तेनाथ सूर्येन्दुप्रमुखाः सुराः । दुर्विलासविलोलस्य बालस्येव स्वबन्धवः || ११ ||

akhidyantaasy tenaath suuryendupramukhaah suraah | durvilasavilolasya baalasyeva svabandhavah || 11 ||

English

The gods, led by the Sun and the Moon, could not bear his heat and were distressed, like the relatives of a playful, mischievous child.

सूर्य और चंद्रमा के नेतृत्व में देवता उसकी गर्मी नहीं सह सके और व्याकुल हो गए, मानो किसी खिलाड़ी, शरारती बच्चे के रिश्तेदार हों।

प्रार्थयांचक्रिरेऽथाजं दैत्येन्द्रेभपतेर्वधेन क्षमन्ते महान्तोपि पौनःपुन्येन दुष्क्रियाम् || १२ ||

prārthayāṃcakrire'thājaṃ daityendrebhapatervadhena kṣamante mahāntopi paunaḥpunyena duṣkriyām || 12 ||

English

They prayed to him, 'O Lord of the demons, forgive us even for our repeated misdeeds, which are difficult to perform.'

उन्होंने प्रार्थना की, 'हे दैत्यों के स्वामी, हमारे बार-बार किए गए दुष्कर्मों को भी क्षमा करें, जो करना कठिन है।'

ततः प्रलयपर्यस्तजगद्धर्घरजृम्भितम्दिग्दन्तिदशनप्रख्यनखवज्रादिजृम्भितम् || १३ ||

English

Then, the universe, exhausted by the dissolution, trembled with a thunderous roar, and the directions, resembling the teeth and nails of the thunderbolt, trembled.

तब, प्रलय से थका हुआ ब्रह्माण्ड गर्जन के साथ काँप उठा, और दिशाएँ, जो वज्र के दाँत और नाखूनों के समान थीं, काँप उठीं।

English

The assembly of brahmins shone with the steady glow of lightning, illuminating the ten directions with its brilliant, blazing radiance.

ब्राह्मणों की सभा विद्युत् की स्थिर चमक से प्रकाशित हो रही थी, जो अपनी उज्ज्वल और ज्वलन्त कान्ति से दस दिशाओं को प्रकाशित कर रही थी।

samastakulaśailendrapiṇḍapīṭhodbhaṭodaramdordrumādhūtanirdhūtasphuradbrahmāṇḍakharparam || 15 ||

English

The entire clan of mountain kings, with their seats raised high, their bellies swollen, and their arms and trees shaken, trembled with the brilliant, shaking universe.

पूरा पर्वत राजाओं का कुल, जिनकी सीटें ऊँची उठी हुई थीं, पेट फूले हुए थे, और बाँहें और पेड़ हिले हुए थे, चमकीले, काँपते हुए ब्रह्माण्ड के साथ काँप रहा था।

English

The fire of anger, capable of burning the three worlds, emerged from his mouth and nose, and caused the mountains to tremble.

क्रोध की अग्नि, जो तीनों लोकों को जलाने के लिए सक्षम है, उसके मुख और नासिका से निकली और पर्वतों को कंपित कर दिया।

saṭāvikataṭapīnāṃsasapndapreritabhāskaram | romakūpalasadvahṇipuñjāpiñjaraparvatam || 17 ||

English

The sun, driven by the vibrations of the mountains, and the mountain peaks, which are like the tufts of hair on the body of the lion, are ablaze with fire.

सूर्य पर्वतों की कंपन से प्रेरित है और पर्वत शिखर सिंह के शरीर के रोंगटे की तरह आग से भरे हुए हैं।

कुलाचलमहाकुड्यघटनोद्भटदिक्तटम् | सर्वावयवनिष्क्रान्तपट्टिशप्रासतोमरम् || १८ ||

kulācalamahākuḍyaghaṭanodbhṭadiktaṭam | sarvāvayavaniṣkrāntapṭṭiśaprāsatomaram || 18 ||

English

The great mountain peaks, with their formidable appearance, and the directions adorned with weapons, are all ablaze with fire.

हिन्दी

महान पर्वत शिखर, जिनका रूप भयंकर है, और हथियारों से सजी दिशाएँ, सभी आग से भरी हुई हैं।

नारसिंहं वपुः कृत्वा माधवोऽहन्महासुरम् | लसत्कटकटारावं तुरङ्गममिव द्विपः || १९ ||

nārasiṃhaṃ vapuḥ kṛtvā mādhavao'hanmahāsuram | lasatkaṭakaṭārāvaṃ turagamamiva dvipaḥ || 19 ||

English

Madhava, taking the form of Narasimha, killed the great demon Hiranyakashipu, who was roaring like a lion attacking an elephant.

माधव ने नरसिंह का रूप धारण किया और हिरण्यकशिपु को मार डाला, जो हाथी पर हमला करने वाले सिंह की तरह गरज रहा था।

पौरमासुरमुद्वान्तैददाहेक्षणवह्निभिः | स सर्वभूतकल्पान्ते जगज्जालमिवानलः || २० ||

pauraṃmāsuramudvāntaiddadāhekṣaṇavahṇibhiḥ | sa sarvabhūtakalpānte jagajjālamivānalaḥ || 20 ||

English

He burned the entire demonic city with the fire of his eyes, as if it were the end of the world, with the universe ablaze.

हिन्दी

उसने अपनी आँखों की आग से सारे दानव नगर को जला दिया, जैसे यह संसार का अंत हो और सारा ब्रह्मांड आग से भरा हुआ हो।

नृसिंहमारुते तस्मिन्भृशं क्षोभमुपागते | विस्फूर्जितघनास्फोटैरेकार्णव इवाकुले || २१ ||

nṛsiṃhamārute tasminbhṛśaṃ kṣobhamupāgate | visphūrjitaghanāsphoṭairikārṇava ivākule || 21 ||

English

When the wind of Narasimha blew strongly, causing great agitation, it was as if the entire ocean was disturbed by the thunderous roar.

हिन्दी

जब नरसिंह की हवा बहुत तेजी से चली, तो बहुत उथल-पुथल हुई, जैसे सारा समुद्र गरजते हुए आवाज से विचलित हो गया था।

दुद्रुवुर्दानवौघास्ते दिग्ज्वलन्मशका इव उपाययुरदृश्यत्वं दीपा इव गतत्विषः || २२ ||

dudruvurdānavaughāste digjvalanmaśakā iva upāyayuradṛśyatvaṁ dīpā iva gatatviṣaḥ || 22 ||

English

Those hordes of demons fled in all directions like moths flying towards a flame, and they became invisible like lamps whose light has gone out.

वे दानव समूह चारों दिशाओं में भागे जैसे अग्नि की ओर उड़ते हुए पतंगे, और वे उस तरह अदृश्य हो गए जैसे दीपक जिनकी रोशनी गुल हो गई हो।

अथ विद्रुतदैत्येन्द्रं दग्धान्तःपुरमण्डलम् बभूव पातालतलं कल्पक्षुण्णजगत्समम् || २३ ||

atha vidrutadaityendraṁ dagdhāntaḥpuramaṇḍalam babhūva pātālatalaṁ kalpakṣuṇṇajagatsamam || 23 ||

English

Then, the inner city of the fled demon king was burnt, and the underworld became like a world destroyed at the end of a kalpa.

हिन्दी

तब, भागे हुए दानव राजा का अंतःपुर जला दिया गया, और पाताल लोक कल्पांत में नष्ट हुए संसार के समान हो गया।

अकालकल्पान्तविधौ हत्वा दैत्यं शनैर्विभौ क्वापि याते समाश्वस्तसुरसंरम्भपूजिते || २४ ||

akālakalpāntavidhau hatvā daityaṁ śanairvibhau kvāpi yāte samāśvastasurasaṁrambhapūjite || 24 ||

English

In the untimely end of the kalpa, after killing the demon, the lord slowly went somewhere, and the gods, relieved, worshipped him.

अकाल कल्पांत में, दानव को मारने के बाद, भगवान धीरे-धीरे कहीं चले गए, और देवताओं ने, चिंता से मुक्त होकर, उनकी पूजा की।

mṛtaśiṣṭā danusutāḥ prahrādaparipālitāḥ dagdhaṁ taṁ deśamājagmuḥ saraḥ śuṣkamivāṇḍajāḥ || 25 ||

English

The remaining sons of Danu, protected by Prahlada, went to that burnt place, like eggs going to a dried-up lake.

दनु के बचे हुए पुत्र, प्रह्लाद द्वारा सुरक्षित, उस जले हुए स्थान पर गए, जैसे अंडे एक सूखे हुए तालाब पर जाते हैं।

तत्र कालोचितां कृत्वा स्वनाशपरिदेवनामौर्ध्वदेहिकसत्कारं चक्रुः प्रेतेषु बन्धुषु || २६ ||

tatra kālocitāṃ kṛtvā svanāśaparidevanāmaurdhvadehikasatkāraṃ cakruḥ preteṣu bandhuṣu || 26 ||

English

There, having made the time appropriate, they performed the funeral rites and lamented their own destruction for the departed relatives.

वहाँ, समय को उपयुक्त बनाकर, उन्होंने मृत बंधुओं के लिए अंतिम संस्कार किए और अपने विनाश के लिए विलाप किया।

हतबन्धुजनं प्लुष्टबन्धुबान्धवमण्डलम् | शनैराश्वासयामासुर्मृतशिष्टं स्वकं जनम् || २७ ||

hatabandhujanaṃ pluṣṭabandhubāndhavamaṇḍalam | śanairāśvāsayāmāsurmṛtaśiṣṭaṃ svakaṃ janam || 27 ||

English

They slowly consoled their remaining people, whose relatives and friends were killed and scattered.

चित्रार्पितोपमदुराकृतयो निरीहा दीनाशया हि महताम्बुरुहोपमानाः | शोकोपतप्तमनसोऽसुरनायकास्ते दग्धद्रुमा इव निरस्तविकारमासन् || २८ ||

citrārpitopamadurākṛtayo nirīhā dīnāśayā hi mahatāmburuhopamānāḥ | śokopataptamanaso'suranāyakāste dagdhadrumā iva nirastavikāramāsan || 28 ||

English

Those leaders of the demons, with their minds burned by sorrow, were like trees burned by fire, devoid of any reaction, with their forms distorted and pitiable, like the lotus flowers offered in rituals.

हिन्दी
