Upaśama, Chapter 30उपशम प्रकरण · सर्ग ३०

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । अथेमं परमं राम विज्ञानाभिगमे क्रमम् । श्रृणु दैत्येश्वरः सिद्धः प्रह्रादः स्वात्मना यथा ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | athemaṃ paramaṃ rāma vijñānābhigame kramam | śṛṇu daityeśvaraḥ siddhaḥ prahrādaḥ svātmanā yathā || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Now, Rama, hear this highest way to reach true knowledge, and how Prahlada, king of the demons, became accomplished through his own effort.

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: अब राम, यह सुनो कि सच्चे ज्ञान तक पहुँचने का सबसे बड़ा तरीका क्या है, और दैत्यों का राजा प्रह्लाद अपने ही प्रयास से कैसे सिद्ध हुआ।

आसीत्पातालकुहरे विद्रावितसुरासुरः । हिरण्यकशिपुर्नाम नारायणपराक्रमः ॥ २ ॥

āsītpātālakuhare vidrāvitasurāsuraḥ | hiraṇyakaśipurnāma nārāyaṇaparākramaḥ || 2 ||

There lived in a cave of the underworld one who had driven away both gods and demons, named Hiranyakashipu, whose strength was like that of Narayana himself.

पाताल की एक गुफा में एक ऐसा राजा रहता था जिसने देवताओं और दैत्यों दोनों को भगा दिया था, उसका नाम था हिरण्यकशिपु, और उसकी ताकत नारायण जैसी थी।

आक्रान्तभुवनाभोगः स जहार हरेर्जगत् । षट्पदस्य बृहत्पत्रं राजहंस इवाम्बुजम् ॥ ३ ॥

ākrāntabhuvanābhogaḥ sa jahāra harerjagat | ṣaṭpadasya bṛhatpatraṃ rājahaṃsa ivāmbujam || 3 ||

Having conquered the whole extent of the world, he seized Hari's own realm too, the way a royal swan takes a great lotus away from a bee.

पूरी दुनिया को जीत लेने के बाद, उसने हरि यानी विष्णु का राज्य भी छीन लिया, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे एक राजहंस किसी भौंरे से बड़ा कमल छीन लेता है।

चकार जगतां राज्यं समाक्रान्तसुरासरः । दन्ती निरस्तहंसौघो नलिन्यामलिनामिव ॥ ४ ॥

cakāra jagatāṃ rājyaṃ samākrāntasurāsaraḥ | dantī nirastahaṃsaugho nalinyāmalināmiva || 4 ||

Having overrun both gods and demons, he made himself ruler of all the worlds, like an elephant that drives both the swans and the bees out of a lotus pond.

देवताओं और दैत्यों दोनों को हराकर, उसने सारे लोकों पर अपना राज कायम कर लिया, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे एक हाथी कमल के तालाब में घुसकर हंसों और भौंरों दोनों को भगा देता है।

तेऽवर्धन्ताचिरेणैव तेजस्यूर्जितबालकाः । दशार्कांशुशतानीव व्योमाक्रान्तिविलासिनः ॥ ५ ॥

te'vardhantācirēṇaiva tejasyūrjitabālakāḥ | daśārkāṃśuśatānīva vyomākrāntivilāsinaḥ || 5 ||

His strong sons grew quickly in brightness, like hundreds of rays from ten suns spreading and playing across the sky.

उसके बलवान बेटे बहुत जल्दी तेज में बढ़ने लगे, जैसे दस सूरजों की सैकड़ों किरणें आकाश में फैलकर चमकती हैं।

प्रह्रादनामा बलवान्प्रधानात्मा बभूव ह । तेषां मध्ये महार्हाणां मणीनामिव कौस्तुभः ॥ ७ ॥

prahraadanaamaa balavaanpradhaanaatmaa babhuva ha | teshaam madhye mahaarhaanaam maNiinaamiva kaustubhah || 7 ||

Among them there was one named Prahlada, strong and of the finest nature, like the Kaustubha jewel among precious gems.

उन बेटों में एक था जिसका नाम प्रह्लाद था, बलवान और सबसे बढ़िया स्वभाव वाला, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे कीमती रत्नों में कौस्तुभमणि सबसे अनोखी होती है।

तेनाराजत पुत्रेण हिरण्यकशिपुर्भृशम् । सर्वसौन्दर्ययुक्तेन वसन्तेनेव वत्सरः ॥ ८ ॥

tenaaraajata putrena hiraNyakashipurbhRsham | sarvasaundaryayuktena vasantenaiva vatsarah || 8 ||

Because of that son, who was full of every kind of beauty, Hiranyakashipu shone brightly, the way a whole year shines because of spring.

उस बेटे के कारण, जो हर तरह की सुंदरता से भरा था, हिरण्यकशिपु बहुत चमक उठा, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे बसंत ऋतु से पूरा साल चमक उठता है।

अथ पुत्रसहायोऽसौ बलकोशसमन्वितः । आजगाम मदं दैत्यस्त्रिगण्डगलितेभवत् ॥ ९ ॥

atha putrasahaayoasau balakoshasamanvitah | aajagaama madam daityastrigaNDagalitebhavat || 9 ||

Now, with his son at his side, and rich in strength and wealth, the demon grew full of pride, like a rutting elephant with fluid streaming from its three temples.

अब अपने बेटे के साथ, और ताकत तथा धन-दौलत से भरपूर, वह दैत्य घमंड से भर गया, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे मस्त हाथी की तीन कनपटियों से मद बहता रहता है।

तत्तापाक्रान्तितापेन त्रिजगन्ति विकासिना । कल्पान्तसूर्यगणवन्नवयैव करश्रिया ॥ १० ॥

tattaapaakraantitaapena trijaganti vikaasinaa | kalpaantasuuryagaNavannavayaiva karashriyaa || 10 ||

The heat of that burning pride spread over the three worlds and kept growing fresh, like the many suns that rise together to burn up the world at the end of an age.

उसके इस जलते घमंड की तपन तीनों लोकों में फैल गई और हर पल और ताज़ा होती गई, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे किसी युग के अंत में एक साथ निकलने वाले कई सूरज पूरी दुनिया को जला देते हैं।

अखिद्यन्तास्य तेनाथ सूर्येन्दुप्रमुखाः सुराः । दुर्विलासविलोलस्य बालस्येव स्वबन्धवः ॥ ११ ॥

akhidyantaasy tenaath suuryendupramukhaah suraah | durvilasavilolasya baalasyeva svabandhavah || 11 ||

Because of this, the gods, with the sun and the moon at their head, grew troubled and worn out, the way the family of a wild, unruly child grows tired of his misbehaviour.

इस वजह से सूर्य और चंद्रमा जैसे बड़े देवता भी परेशान और थके हुए हो गए, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे किसी शरारती और बेकाबू बच्चे के घर वाले उसकी शरारतों से थक जाते हैं।

प्रार्थयांचक्रिरेऽथाजं दैत्येन्द्रेभपतेर्वधेन क्षमन्ते महान्तोपि पौनःपुन्येन दुष्क्रियाम् ॥ १२ ॥

prārthayāṃcakrire'thājaṃ daityendrebhapatervadhena kṣamante mahāntopi paunaḥpunyena duṣkriyām || 12 ||

Then they went and pleaded with Aja, the unborn Brahma, for the killing of the lord of the demons, since even great beings run out of patience with wrongdoing that keeps repeating.

तब वे सब ब्रह्मा यानी अज के पास गए और उस दैत्यराज को मार डालने की विनती की, क्योंकि बड़े से बड़ा व्यक्ति भी बार-बार होने वाली बुराई को सहते-सहते थक जाता है।

ततः प्रलयपर्यस्तजगद्धर्घरजृम्भितम्दिग्दन्तिदशनप्रख्यनखवज्रादिजृम्भितम् ॥ १३ ॥

tataḥ pralayaparyastajagaddhargharajṛmbhitamdigdantidaśanaprakhyanakhavajrādijṛmbhitam || 13 ||

Then it opened wide with a roar that could overturn the world at its final dissolution, and it spread out claws like thunderbolts, resembling the tusks of the elephants that guard the directions.

फिर वह एक ऐसी दहाड़ के साथ फैला जो प्रलय में दुनिया को उलट सकती थी, और उसके पंजे बिजली जैसे चमक उठे, ठीक उन हाथियों के दाँतों जैसे जो दिशाओं की रखवाली करते हैं।

स्थिरविद्युल्लताजालभासुरद्विजमण्डलम्दशदिक्कोटरोद्भान्तज्वलज्ज्वलनकुण्डलम् ॥ १४ ॥

sthiravidyullatājālabhāsuradvijamaṇḍalamdaśadikkoṭarodbhāntajvalajjvalanakuṇḍalam || 14 ||

Its rows of teeth shone like a web of unmoving lightning, and its earrings were burning flames that swept through the far corners of all ten directions.

उसके दाँतों की पंक्तियाँ ऐसे चमकती थीं जैसे बिजली का जाल थमा हुआ हो, और उसके कुंडल जलती हुई लपटें थीं जो दसों दिशाओं के कोने-कोने में फैल रही थीं।

समस्तकुलशैलेन्द्रपिण्डपीठोद्भटोदरम्दोर्द्रुमाधूतनिर्धूतस्फुरद्ब्रह्माण्डखर्परम् ॥ १५ ॥

samastakulaśailendrapiṇḍapīṭhodbhaṭodaramdordrumādhūtanirdhūtasphuradbrahmāṇḍakharparam || 15 ||

Its body was as huge as if built from a mass of all the great mountains piled together, and its tree-like arms shook the very shell of the universe until it trembled and scattered.

उसका शरीर इतना विशाल था मानो सारे बड़े-बड़े पहाड़ों को एक साथ ढेर करके बनाया गया हो, और उसकी पेड़ जैसी भुजाओं ने पूरे ब्रह्मांड के खोल को हिलाकर बिखेर दिया।

वदनोदरनिष्क्रान्तवातोत्सारितपर्वतम्त्रिजगद्दहनोद्युक्तकोपकल्पाग्निगर्वितम् ॥ १६ ॥

vadanodaraniṣkrāntavātotsāritaparvatamtrijagaddahanodyuktakopakalpāgnigarvitam || 16 ||

The wind rushing out of its open mouth blew mountains aside, and its fury burned proud like the fire that rises to burn up all three worlds at the end of time.

उसके खुले मुँह से निकलती हवा ने पहाड़ों को उड़ा दिया, और उसका गुस्सा उस आग की तरह धधक उठा जो समय के अंत में तीनों लोकों को जला देती है।

सटाविकटपीनांसस्पन्दप्रेरितभास्करम् । रोमकूपलसद्वह्निपुञ्जापिञ्जरपर्वतम् ॥ १७ ॥

saṭāvikataṭapīnāṃsasapndapreritabhāskaram | romakūpalasadvahṇipuñjāpiñjaraparvatam || 17 ||

With its wild mane, the shudder of its huge, terrible shoulders seemed to shake the sun itself, and its mountain-like body glowed reddish brown from fire blazing out of every hair on its skin.

उसके बिखरे बालों और विशाल, डरावने कंधों के हिलने से मानो सूरज भी काँप उठा, और उसका पहाड़ जैसा शरीर उसके रोम-रोम से निकलती आग से लाल-भूरा चमक रहा था।

कुलाचलमहाकुड्यघटनोद्भटदिक्तटम् । सर्वावयवनिष्क्रान्तपट्टिशप्रासतोमरम् ॥ १८ ॥

kulācalamahākuḍyaghaṭanodbhṭadiktaṭam | sarvāvayavaniṣkrāntapṭṭiśaprāsatomaram || 18 ||

It was so vast that the far horizons seemed built like great walls out of the ancient mountains, and spears, lances and javelins burst out from every limb of its body.

वह इतना विशाल था कि दूर के क्षितिज मानो पुराने पहाड़ों से बनी बड़ी दीवारों जैसे लगते थे, और उसके शरीर के हर अंग से भाले, बरछे और बल्लम फूट पड़ते थे।

नारसिंहं वपुः कृत्वा माधवोऽहन्महासुरम् । लसत्कटकटारावं तुरङ्गममिव द्विपः ॥ १९ ॥

nārasiṃhaṃ vapuḥ kṛtvā mādhavao'hanmahāsuram | lasatkaṭakaṭārāvaṃ turagamamiva dvipaḥ || 19 ||

Taking on the body of Narasimha, the man lion, Madhava killed the great demon, whose gnashing teeth clattered and roared, the way an elephant tramples a horse.

नरसिंह यानी नर-सिंह का रूप लेकर, माधव ने उस महान दैत्य को मार डाला, जिसके दाँत पीसने की आवाज़ गूँज रही थी, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे कोई हाथी घोड़े को रौंद देता है।

पौरमासुरमुद्वान्तैददाहेक्षणवह्निभिः । स सर्वभूतकल्पान्ते जगज्जालमिवानलः ॥ २० ॥

pauraṃmāsuramudvāntaiddadāhekṣaṇavahṇibhiḥ | sa sarvabhūtakalpānte jagajjālamivānalaḥ || 20 ||

He burned the demon's people with the fire of his blazing eyes, the way the fire that consumes the whole web of the world burns everything when all beings dissolve at the end of an age.

उसने अपनी जलती आँखों की आग से दैत्य की प्रजा को जला डाला, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे युग के अंत में सारे प्राणियों के साथ पूरी दुनिया को जलाने वाली आग सब कुछ भस्म कर देती है।

नृसिंहमारुते तस्मिन्भृशं क्षोभमुपागते । विस्फूर्जितघनास्फोटैरेकार्णव इवाकुले ॥ २१ ॥

nṛsiṃhamārute tasminbhṛśaṃ kṣobhamupāgate | visphūrjitaghanāsphoṭairikārṇava ivākule || 21 ||

When that storm of Narasimha's fury grew violent, the world was thrown into turmoil by bursting claps like crashing thunderclouds, as if it had become one churning ocean.

जब नरसिंह के गुस्से का यह तूफान भड़क उठा, तो पूरी दुनिया गरजते बादलों जैसी तेज़ आवाज़ों से हिल गई, मानो वह एक ही उमड़ता हुआ समुद्र बन गई हो।

दुद्रुवुर्दानवौघास्ते दिग्ज्वलन्मशका इव उपाययुरदृश्यत्वं दीपा इव गतत्विषः ॥ २२ ॥

dudruvurdānavaughāste digjvalanmaśakā iva upāyayuradṛśyatvaṁ dīpā iva gatatviṣaḥ || 22 ||

The hordes of demons fled in every direction like gnats fleeing across a horizon in flames, and they vanished from sight like lamps whose light has gone out.

दैत्यों की भीड़ें हर तरफ ऐसे भागीं जैसे मच्छर जलते हुए क्षितिज से भागते हैं, और वे ऐसे गायब हो गईं जैसे बुझ चुके दीये।

अथ विद्रुतदैत्येन्द्रं दग्धान्तःपुरमण्डलम् बभूव पातालतलं कल्पक्षुण्णजगत्समम् ॥ २३ ॥

atha vidrutadaityendraṁ dagdhāntaḥpuramaṇḍalam babhūva pātālatalaṁ kalpakṣuṇṇajagatsamam || 23 ||

Then, with the lord of the demons put to flight and his palace grounds burned, the whole netherworld became like a world ground to ruin at the end of an age.

फिर, दैत्यों के राजा को भगा देने और उसके महल को जला देने के बाद, पूरा पाताल ऐसा हो गया जैसे युग के अंत में तबाह हुई दुनिया।

अकालकल्पान्तविधौ हत्वा दैत्यं शनैर्विभौ क्वापि याते समाश्वस्तसुरसंरम्भपूजिते ॥ २४ ॥

akālakalpāntavidhau hatvā daityaṁ śanairvibhau kvāpi yāte samāśvastasurasaṁrambhapūjite || 24 ||

After killing the demon like an untimely end of the world, and once the Lord had slowly gone away somewhere, honoured by the gods whose fear and frenzy were now calmed,

दैत्य को मार डालने के बाद, मानो समय से पहले ही दुनिया का अंत हो गया हो, और भगवान के धीरे-धीरे कहीं चले जाने के बाद, जिनकी उन देवताओं ने पूजा की जिनका डर और हड़बड़ी अब शांत हो चुकी थी,

मृतशिष्टा दनुसुताः प्रह्रादपरिपालिताः दग्धं तं देशमाजग्मुः सरः शुष्कमिवाण्डजाः ॥ २५ ॥

mṛtaśiṣṭā danusutāḥ prahrādaparipālitāḥ dagdhaṁ taṁ deśamājagmuḥ saraḥ śuṣkamivāṇḍajāḥ || 25 ||

the sons of Danu who were left alive, now cared for by Prahlada, came back to that burned land, like birds returning to a lake that has dried up.

दानु के बचे हुए बेटे, जिनकी देखभाल अब प्रह्लाद कर रहा था, उस जली हुई धरती पर लौट आए, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे पंछी सूख चुकी झील पर लौट आते हैं।

तत्र कालोचितां कृत्वा स्वनाशपरिदेवनामौर्ध्वदेहिकसत्कारं चक्रुः प्रेतेषु बन्धुषु ॥ २६ ॥

tatra kālocitāṃ kṛtvā svanāśaparidevanāmaurdhvadehikasatkāraṃ cakruḥ preteṣu bandhuṣu || 26 ||

There, after mourning their own ruin as was fitting for the time, they carried out the funeral rites for their dead kinsmen.

वहाँ, उस समय के हिसाब से अपनी बर्बादी पर शोक मनाने के बाद, उन्होंने अपने मरे हुए रिश्तेदारों का अंतिम संस्कार किया।

हतबन्धुजनं प्लुष्टबन्धुबान्धवमण्डलम् । शनैराश्वासयामासुर्मृतशिष्टं स्वकं जनम् ॥ २७ ॥

hatabandhujanaṃ pluṣṭabandhubāndhavamaṇḍalam | śanairāśvāsayāmāsurmṛtaśiṣṭaṃ svakaṃ janam || 27 ||

Slowly, they comforted their own surviving people, whose kinsmen had been killed and whose whole circle of relatives and friends had been burned.

धीरे-धीरे, उन्होंने अपने बचे हुए लोगों को सांत्वना दी, जिनके रिश्तेदार मारे जा चुके थे और जिनके सारे परिवार और दोस्त जल चुके थे।

चित्रार्पितोपमदुराकृतयो निरीहा दीनाशया हि महताम्बुरुहोपमानाः । शोकोपतप्तमनसोऽसुरनायकास्ते दग्धद्रुमा इव निरस्तविकारमासन् ॥ २८ ॥

citrārpitopamadurākṛtayo nirīhā dīnāśayā hi mahatāmburuhopamānāḥ | śokopataptamanaso'suranāyakāste dagdhadrumā iva nirastavikāramāsan || 28 ||

Their faces grim and still as figures fixed in a painting, without any will to act, their hearts wretched like great lotuses closed, those demon chiefs, their minds scorched by grief, went rigid and unmoving, like trees burnt to stillness.

उनके चेहरे तस्वीर में बनी आकृतियों जैसे कठोर और स्थिर हो गए थे, उनमें कुछ करने की कोई इच्छा नहीं बची थी, उनके मन उदास कमल की तरह मुरझाए हुए थे, वे दैत्यों के सरदार, जिनके मन दुख से जल रहे थे, ऐसे अकड़ गए और निश्चल हो गए जैसे जले हुए पेड़।
