Sri Vasishtha said: Then, after a thousand years of the gods had passed, the illustrious Bali, greatest among the demons, woke up at the sound of the gods' drums.
Seeing them, with his eyes unsettled by their bowing and his body surrounded by them who looked like great mountains, he thought again like this.
citaḥ kṣīṇavikalpasya kimupādeyamasti me | manastadabhipātitvādyāti tadrastāmalam || 9 ||
My mind's flickering thoughts have faded, so what is left for me to want. Since my mind keeps falling toward that peace, it has become completely full of its joy.
I want freedom, but from what? Who or what bound me before? If I was never bound, why do I want freedom? What kind of childish foolishness is this?
na bandhosti na mokṣosti maurkhyaṃ me kṣayamāgatamkiṃ me dhyānavilāsena kiṃ vā dhyānena me bhavet || 11 ||
There is no bondage and there is no freedom. My foolishness has come to an end. What use is the play of meditation to me? What would meditation even do for me?
dhyānādhyānabhramau tyaktvā puṃstvaṃ svamavalokayat | yadāyāti tadāyātu na me vṛddhirna vā kṣayaḥ || 12 ||
Giving up the confusion between meditating and not meditating, let the self look at itself. Let whatever comes, come. Nothing grows in me and nothing shrinks in me.
nāhaṃ mṛto na jīvāmi na sannāsanna sanmayaḥ | nedam me naiva cānyanme namo mahyamahaṃ bṛhat || 15 ||
I am not dead, and I am not alive. I am not something that exists, nor something that does not exist, nor am I made of existence. Nothing here is mine, and nothing else is mine either. I bow to myself. I am the vast one.
kiṃ me dhyānadṛśā kāryaṃ kiṃ rājyavibhavaśriyā | yadāyāti tadāyātu nāhaṃ kiṃcana me kvacit || 17 ||
What use is the vision of meditation to me? What use is the glory of a kingdom's wealth? Let whatever comes, come. I am nothing, and nothing is mine, anywhere.
tarpitāśeṣabhuvanaṃ devarṣigaṇapūjitamsaha śukrādibhirmukhyaiḥ sa cakāra mahāmakham || 25 ||
Together with Shukra and the other chief priests, he performed a great sacrifice that satisfied every world and was honored by hosts of gods and sages.
Vishnu, the granter of every true wish, decided that Bali did not really want a heap of pleasures, and went to that sacrifice to bring about what Bali truly wanted.
Now, Rama, he remains there, waiting to become Indra once again. He is free even while still alive, entirely at ease, his mind always sunk deep in meditation.
Living in a cave in the netherworld, Bali, whose mind is liberated while he is still alive, looks upon misfortune and good fortune with the very same eyes.
In pleasure and in pain, his understanding neither sets nor rises. It stays even and steady, like a row of suns painted in a picture, their rays unmoving.
Watching for a long time the thousands of births and deaths of living beings here, his mind has drawn back and turned away from all that is frightening.
ūhāpohasahasrāṇi bhāvābhāvaśatāni ca | balinā paridṛṣṭāni kva samāśvāsametyasau || 34 ||
Bali has looked closely at thousands of arguments for and against, and hundreds of things that come into being and pass away. Where among these could he now find any comfort?
Bali has given up all craving for pleasure. His mind is now completely at peace; he lives always delighting in himself alone, deep inside a hollow cave in the netherworld.
So, Raghava, use your judgment as Bali did. Through the certainty 'I am eternal,' reach the state where there is no longer any two, by your own effort alone.
So, Rama, crusher of enemies, give up this heavy load of pleasure, which is bound to turn sour in the end, and go instead to that true joy which never turns sour.
Rama, these things seen by the eye, which take on so many changing shapes, should not be taken here as lovely and desirable, like mountain rocks that look beautiful only from far away.
cidādityo bhavāneva sarvatra jagati sthitaḥ| kaḥ paraste ka ātmīyaḥ pariskhalasi kiṃ mudhā || 45 ||
You alone are the sun of consciousness, present everywhere in the world. Who is a stranger to you, and who is your own? Why do you stumble about for nothing?
You are infinite, mighty-armed one. You are the first, the highest being. Your very body is consciousness, and you shine out in the shapes of hundreds of things.
In you, in your ever-risen and pure awareness, this whole world, everything that moves and everything that does not move, is strung together, just as gems are strung on a thread.
You are not born and you do not die. You are unborn, the vast being who fills everything. You are pure consciousness. Do not let the delusions of birth and death touch you.
When you, the lord of the world, the sun of awareness that always shines, stand as the ground of everything, then this whole world appears only as the decoration of a dream, the dream of birth after birth.
Do not grieve for nothing. You have no craving for pleasure or pain. You are pure consciousness, the self in everyone, the one who lights up every single thing.
When you give up seeing things as liked or disliked, a lasting evenness of mind arises. Once that evenness settles in the heart, a person is not born again.
Do not lower yourself to the level of people who think the body alone is the truth, whose minds are ruined by false views, who are cheats sold out to their own whims, and who are utterly deluded fools.
In this world, nothing causes more suffering than the folly of a person who treats his own judgment as worthless and hangs instead on the words of others.
Even all the reasoning drawn from the Vedas, the Vedanta, and the scriptures cannot make this self clear, so long as you have not looked directly at yourself.
Rama, resting in yourself, by yourself, in a state of deep calm, you have gained a vast awakening. You are understanding it right now, in these very words I speak.
Through my words, you have now grasped the vast, all-pervading nature of the sun of consciousness, the supreme self that is utterly free of any doubt or imagination.
All your mental constructs have dissolved, your doubt and confusion have settled, the mist of restless curiosity has thinned away, and you have become one whose fever is gone.
yadupagacchasi pāsi nihaṃsi vā pibasi vismayase ca vivardhase| tadapi tena tadāstu yadā mune vigatabodhakalaṅkaviśaṅkitaḥ || 64 ||
Whatever you approach, protect, destroy, or drink, whatever you wonder at and whatever you make grow, let all of this too happen through that same awareness, sage, once you stay ever watchful against even a trace of the stain of forgetting it.
