श्रीवाल्मीकिरुवाच ते समेत्य गृहं गत्वा राजपुत्राः शशित्विषः । चक्रुः सर्वमशेषेण स्वसद्मसु दिनक्रमम् || १ ||

śrīvālmīkiruvāca te sametya gṛhaṃ gatvā rājaputrāḥ śaśitviṣaḥ | cakruḥ sarvamaśeṣeṇa svasadmasu dinakramam || 1 ||

English

Sage Valmiki said: Having assembled and returned to their homes, the royal princes, who were like the moon, performed all their daily duties without exception in their own abodes.

हिन्दी

महर्षि वाल्मीकि ने कहा: एकत्र होकर अपने घरों को लौटकर, चंद्रमा के समान उन राजकुमारों ने अपने निवासों में सभी दैनिक कर्तव्यों को बिना किसी अपवाद के पूरा किया।

वसिष्ठो राघवश्चैव राजानो मुनयो द्विजाः। इति चक्रुः स्वकार्याणि तथा स्वगृहवीथिषु || २ ||

vasiṣṭho rāghavaścaiva rājāno munayo dvijāḥ iti cakruḥ svakāryāṇi tathā svagṛhavīthiṣu || 2 ||

English

Vasistha, Rama, kings, sages, and the twice-born thus performed their respective duties in their own homes and pathways.

हिन्दी

वसिष्ठ, राम, राजा, मुनि और द्विज अपने-अपने घरों और मार्गों में अपने कर्तव्यों का पालन करते थे।

सस्नुः कमलकह्लारकुमुदोत्पलहारिषु। जलाशयेषु चक्राह्वहंससारसराजीषु || ३ ||

sasnuḥ kamalakahlārakumudotpalahāriṣu jalāśayeṣu cakrāhvahaṃsasārasarājiṣu || 3 ||

English

They bathed in ponds adorned with lotuses, blue lotuses, water lilies, and lilies, where flocks of cakravaka birds, swans, and cranes played.

हिन्दी

वे कमल, नीलकमल, कुमुद और उत्पल से सुशोभित जलाशयों में स्नान करते थे, जहाँ चक्रवाक, हंस और सारस पक्षियों के समूह विहार करते थे।

गोभूतिलहिरण्यानि शयान्यासनानि च। ददुर्दानानि विप्रेभ्यो भाजनान्यंशुकानि च || ४ ||

gobhūtilahiraṇyāni śayanānyāsanāni ca dadurdānāni viprebhyo bhājanānyaṃśukāni ca || 4 ||

English

They gave to the Brahmins beds, seats, cows, gold, garments, and vessels as gifts.

उन्होंने ब्राह्मणों को गायें, सोने के आभूषण, शैयाएँ, आसन, बर्तन और वस्त्र दान में दिए।

हेमरत्नविचित्रेषु स्वेषु चामरसद्मसु। आनर्चुरच्युतेशानहुताशार्कादिकान्सुरान् || ५ ||

hemaratnavicitreṣu sveṣu cāmarasadmasu ānarcuracyuteśānahutāśārkādikānsurān || 5 ||

English

In their own palaces adorned with gold and gems, they worshipped the gods such as Achyuta, Ishana, Hutasha, and Surya.

हिन्दी

अपने सोने और रत्नों से सुशोभित महलों में उन्होंने अच्युत, ईशान, हुताश और सूर्य आदि देवताओं की पूजा की।

पुत्रपौत्रसुहृद्भृत्यबन्धुमित्रगणैः सह | तत आस्वादयामासुर्भोजनान्युचितानि वै || ६ ||

putrapautrasuhṛdbhṛtyabandhumitragṇaiḥ saha | tata āsvādayāmāsurbhojanānyucitāni vai || 6 ||

English

Along with their sons, grandsons, friends, servants, relatives, and allies, they enjoyed appropriate meals.

हिन्दी

अपने पुत्रों, पौत्रों, मित्रों, सेवकों, रिश्तेदारों और सहयोगियों के साथ, वे उचित भोजन का आस्वादन करते थे।

एतस्मिन्समये चास्मिन्नगरे दिवसोऽभवत् | तनुरष्टाङ्गशेषत्वाद्दृष्टो न च मनोहरः || ७ ||

etasminnasmaye cāsminnagare divaso'bhavat | tanuraṣṭāṅgaśeṣatvāddṛṣṭo na ca manoharaḥ || 7 ||

English

At that time in this city, the day appeared. The body, due to the remaining eight parts, was not seen as charming.

हिन्दी

उस समय इस नगर में दिन हुआ। शरीर, आठ अंगों के शेष होने के कारण, मनोहर नहीं दिखा।

सायन्तनदिनान्तं ते तत्कालोचितचेष्टया | अनयन्नंशुभिः सार्धं यावदस्तं ययौ रविः || ८ ||

sāyantanadināntaṃ te tatkālocitaceṣṭayā | anayannaṃśubhiḥ sārdhaṃ yāvadastaṃ yayau raviḥ || 8 ||

English

Till the end of the day, they performed appropriate actions with auspicious signs until the sun set.

हिन्दी

दिन के अंत तक, वे शुभ चिह्नों के साथ उचित कार्य करते रहे जब तक सूर्य अस्त नहीं हो गया।

संध्यां ववन्दिरे सुष्टु जेपुश्चैवाघमर्षणम् | पेठुः स्तोत्राणि पुण्यानि जगुर्गाथा मनोहराः || ९ ||

saṃdhyāṃ vavandire suṣṭu jepuścaivāghamarṣaṇam | peṭhuḥ stotrāṇi puṇyāni jagurgāthā manoharāḥ || 9 ||

English

They worshipped the twilight beautifully, chanted the Aghamarshana hymn, recited holy verses, and sang charming tales.

हिन्दी

उन्होंने संध्या की पूजा बहुत सुंदरता से की, अघमर्षण सूक्त का जाप किया, पवित्र स्तोत्र पढ़े, और मनोहर कथाएँ गाईं।

ततश्चाभ्युदिता श्यामा कामिनीशोकहारिणी | क्षीरोदादिव माहेन्द्री चन्द्रावश्यायदायिनी || १० ||

tataścābhyuditā śyāmā kāminīśokahāriṇī | kṣīrodādiva māhendrī candrāvaśyāyadāyinī || 10 ||

English

Then, the dark night arose, dispelling the sorrow of lovers, like the queen of the ocean of milk, bringing the coolness of the moon.

हिन्दी

तब, अँधेरी रात उदित हुई, प्रेमियों के दुःख को दूर करते हुए, जैसे दूध के समुद्र की रानी, चंद्रमा की ठंडक लाते हुए।

शनैरास्तीर्णपुष्पेषु कीर्णकर्पूरमुष्टिषु | दीर्घेन्दुबिम्बरम्येषु तस्थुस्तल्पेषु राघवाः || ११ ||

śanairāstīrṇapuṣpeṣu kīrṇakarpūramuṣṭiṣu | dīrghendubimbaramyeṣu tasthustalpeṣu rāghavāḥ || 11 ||

English

Gradually, the descendants of Raghu rested on beds adorned with flowers and sprinkled with camphor, under the charming light of the full moon.

हिन्दी

धीरे-धीरे, रघुवंशी लोग फूलों से सजे और कर्पूर से छिड़के बिस्तरों पर चन्द्रमा के मनोहर प्रकाश में विश्राम करने लगे।

अथ रामादृतेऽन्येषां तत्र तद्व्यवहारिणी | व्यतीयाय शनैः श्यामा मुहूर्त इव शोभना || १२ ||

atha rāmādṛte'nyeṣāṃ tatra tadvyavahāriṇī | vyatīyāya śanaiḥ śyāmā muhūrta iva śobhanā || 12 ||

English

Then, except for Rama, the activities of others there gradually diminished, and the beautiful night passed like a moment.

हिन्दी

फिर, राम को छोड़कर, वहाँ दूसरों की गतिविधियाँ धीरे-धीरे कम होती गई, और सुन्दर रात एक पल की तरह बीत गई।

तस्थौ रामस्तु तामेव वासिष्ठीं वचनावलीम् | चिन्तयन्मधुरोदारां करिणीं कलभो यथा || १३ ||

tasthau rāmastu tāmeva vāsiṣṭhīṃ vacanāvalīm | cintayanmadhurodārāṃ kariṇīṃ kalabho yathā || 13 ||

English

Rama stood there, pondering over the sweet and profound words of Vasistha, like an elephant thinking about its mate.

हिन्दी

राम वहाँ खड़े होकर, वसिष्ठ के मधुर और गहरे शब्दों पर विचार करते रहे, जैसे हाथी अपनी साथी के बारे में सोचता है।

किमिदं नाम संसारभ्रमणं किमिमे जनाः | भूतानि च विचित्राणि किमायान्ति प्रयान्ति किं || १४ ||

kimidaṃ nāma saṃsārabhramaṇaṃ kimime janāḥ | bhūtāni ca vicitrāṇi kimāyānti prayānti kiṃ || 14 ||

English

What is this called the wandering in the world? Who are these people? And what are these diverse beings? What do they come from and where do they go?

हिन्दी

यह क्या है जिसे संसार में भटकना कहते हैं? ये कौन लोग हैं? और ये विविध प्राणी क्या हैं? ये कहाँ से आते हैं और कहाँ जाते हैं?

मनसः कीदृशं रूपं कथं चैतत्प्रशाम्यति | मायेयं सा किमुत्था स्यात्कथं चैव निवर्तते || १५ ||

manasaḥ kīdṛśaṃ rūpaṃ kathaṃ caitatpraśāmyati | māyeyaṃ sā kimutthā syātkathaṃ caiva nivartate || 15 ||

English

What is the nature of the mind? How does it become calm? What is the origin of this illusion? And how does it cease?

मन का क्या स्वरूप है? यह कैसे शान्त होता है? इस माया का क्या उद्भव है? और यह कैसे समाप्त होती है?

निवृत्तयानया कः स्याद्गुणो दोषोऽथ वा भवेत् | कथमात्मनि चैवायं तते संकोच आगतः || १६ ||

nivṛttayānayā kaḥ syādguṇo doṣo'tha vā bhavet | kathamātmani caivāyaṃ tate saṃkoca āgataḥ || 16 ||

English

What merit or demerit arises from the path of renunciation? How has this contraction come upon the self?

हिन्दी

निवृत्ति के मार्ग से कौन सा गुण या दोष उत्पन्न होता है? आत्मा पर यह संकोच कैसे आया?

किमुक्तं स्याद्भगवता मुनिना मनसः क्षये | किं चेन्द्रियजये प्रोक्तं किमुक्तमथवात्मनि || १७ ||

kimuktaṃ syād bhagavatā muninā manasaḥ kṣaye | kiṃ cendriyajaye proktaṃ kimuktam athavātmani || 17 ||

English

What has been said by the blessed sage about the destruction of the mind? What has been said about the conquest of the senses, or what has been said about the self?

हिन्दी

भगवान मुनि ने मन के विनाश के बारे में क्या कहा है? इन्द्रियों की विजय के बारे में क्या कहा गया है, या आत्मा के बारे में क्या कहा गया है?

जीवश्चित्तं मनो मायेत्येवमादिभिराततैः | रूपैरात्मैव संसारं तनोतीममसन्मयम् || १८ ||

jīvaścittaṃ mano māyetyevamādibhirātatraiḥ | rūpairātmaiva saṃsāraṃ tanotīmamasanmayam || 18 ||

English

The individual soul, the mind, the intellect, and illusion—these and other such forms are the self that weaves this worldly existence, which is unreal.

जीव, चित्त, मन, माया—इन और ऐसे ही अन्य रूपों से आत्मा ही इस असत्य संसार को बुनती है।

एभिरेवं मनोमात्रतन्तुबद्धैः क्षयं गतैः | दुःखोपशान्तिरेतानि सुचिकित्स्यानि नः कथम् || १९ ||

ebhirevaṃ manomātratantubaddhaiḥ kṣayaṃ gataiḥ | duḥkhopaśāntiretāni sucikitsyāni naḥ katham || 19 ||

English

How can these, which are bound by the mere threads of the mind and have perished, be remedies for the cessation of suffering?

हिन्दी

जो मन के धागों से बंधे हुए हैं और नष्ट हो गए हैं, ये दुःख की शांति के उपाय कैसे हो सकते हैं?

भोगाभ्रमालावलयां धीबलाकामिमां कथम् | पृथक्करोमि पयसो धारां हंस इवाम्भसः || २० ||

bhogābhramālāvalayāṃ dhībalākāmimāṃ katham | pṛthakkaromi payaso dhārāṃ haṃsa ivāmbhasaḥ || 20 ||

English

How can I separate the stream of milk from the water, like a swan, in this garland of illusory enjoyments that is weak in intellect?

हिन्दी

मैं इस भ्रामक भोगों की माला में, जो बुद्धि में कमजोर है, हंस की तरह दूध की धारा को पानी से कैसे अलग कर सकता हूँ?

भोगास्त्यक्तुं न शक्यन्ते तत्त्यागेन विना वयम् | प्रभवामो न विपदामहो संकटमागतम् || २१ ||

bhogāstyaktuṃ na śakyante tattyāgena vinā vayaṃ | prabhavāmo na vipadāmaho saṃkaṭamāgatam || 21 ||

English

We cannot abandon pleasures without renunciation; alas, we have fallen into a great crisis.

हिन्दी

भोगों को त्यागना बिना त्याग के संभव नहीं है, अहो, हम बड़े संकट में आ गए हैं।

मनोमात्रमिदं प्राप्यं तथैवेदं प्रयोजनम् | संपन्नं नो गिरिगुरु मौर्ख्याद्यक्षः शिशोरिव || २२ ||

manomātramidaṃ prāpyaṃ tathaivedaṃ prayojanam | sampannaṃ no giriguru maurkhyādyakṣaḥ śiśoriva || 22 ||

English

This is attainable by the mind alone, and this is the purpose; we are complete, O great mountain, like a foolish child unaware of the essence.

हिन्दी

यह मन के द्वारा ही प्राप्त किया जा सकता है, और यही उद्देश्य है; हम पूर्ण हैं, हे महान पर्वत, जैसे कोई मूर्ख बच्चा जो महत्व से अनजान है।

परमां शान्तिमागत्य गतसंसारसंभ्रमा | बालेव लब्धदयिता कंचित्प्राप्स्यति नो मतिः || २३ ||

paramāṃ śāntimāgatya gatasaṃsārasaṃbhramā | bāleva labdhadayitā kaṃcitprāpsyati no matiḥ || 23 ||

English

Having attained supreme peace, free from worldly confusion, like a child who has found a beloved, we will attain some understanding.

हिन्दी

परम शांति प्राप्त करके, संसारिक भ्रम से मुक्त होकर, जैसे कोई बच्चा जो अपने प्रिय को पा लेता है, हम कुछ समझ प्राप्त करेंगे।

कदोपशान्तसंरम्भं विगताशेषकौतुकम् | अपापमात्मविश्रान्तं मम स्यात्पावनं मनः || २४ ||

kadopaśāntasaṃrambhaṃ vigatāśeṣakautukam | apāpamātmaviśrāntaṃ mama syātpāvanaṃ manaḥ || 24 ||

English

May my mind be purified, free from all passions and desires, calm and peaceful, and resting in the self.

हिन्दी

मेरा मन शुद्ध हो, सभी आसक्तियों और इच्छाओं से मुक्त, शांत और शांतिपूर्ण, और आत्मा में विश्राम करे।

English

When will the mind, having abandoned the unstable form, find peace in the self, like a wave in the water?

तृष्णातरङ्गाकुलितमाशामकरमालिनम् कदा संसारजलधिं तीर्त्वा स्यामहमज्वरः || २७ ||

English

When will I, having crossed the ocean of worldly existence, be free from the fever of desire, which is agitated by the waves of craving?

When will the wise seekers of liberation dwell in the pure states of peace, free from sorrow, with equanimity?

When will the long-lasting fever of transmigration, which causes suffering to all parts of the body and fear to all elements, be destroyed?

When will the senses, through negligence, cross over their sorrows, like Garuda crossing the ocean with his body burnt by the poison?

अयं सोऽहं रुदन्मूढ इति व्यर्थाहितो भ्रमः | शरदीवासितो मेघः कदा नाशमुपैष्यति || ३२ ||

ayaṃ so'haṃ rudanmūḍha iti vyarthāhito bhramaḥ | śaradīvāsito meghaḥ kadā nāśamupaiṣyati || 32 ||

English

This delusion of 'I am this foolish, weeping self' is a useless attachment. Like an autumn cloud, when will it dissipate?

यह भ्रम 'मैं यह मूर्ख, रोता हुआ स्वयं हूँ' एक व्यर्थ आसक्ति है। शरद ऋतु के बादल की तरह, कब यह छंटेगा?

मन्दारवनलेखासु या मतिः सा तृणायते | याचे तत्पदमात्मीयं संप्राप्स्यामः कदा वयम् || ३३ ||

mandāravanalekhāsu yā matiḥ sā tṛṇāyate | yāce tatpadamātmīyaṃ saṃprāpsyāmaḥ kadā vayam || 33 ||

English

The mind that dwells on the beautiful lines of Mandara flowers is like grass. When will we attain that state which is our own?

हिन्दी

मन्दार फूलों की सुंदर रेखाओं पर जो मन लगा है, वह घास की तरह है। हम अपने स्वयं के उस पद को कब प्राप्त करेंगे?

वीतरागजनप्रोक्ता निर्मला ज्ञानदृष्टयः | कच्चित्पदं त्वयि मनः करिष्यन्तीति मे वद || ३४ ||

vītarāgajanaproktā nirmalā jñānadṛṣṭayaḥ | kaccitpadaṃ tvayi manaḥ kariṣyantīti me vada || 34 ||

English

The pure visions of knowledge spoken by the detached people, will they make the mind attain that state in you? Tell me.

हिन्दी

वीतराग जनों द्वारा कही गई निर्मल ज्ञान दृष्टियाँ, क्या वे मन को आपमें उस पद को प्राप्त कराएँगी? मुझे बताओ।

हा तात मातः पुत्रेति गिरामासामहं पुनः | भाजनं चित्त माभूवं भोजनं दुःखभोगिनाम् || ३५ ||

hā tāta mātaḥ putreti girāmāsāmahaṃ punaḥ | bhājanaṃ citta mābhūvaṃ bhojanaṃ duḥkhabhoginām || 35 ||

English

Alas, I have become a vessel of the mind, a feast for those who experience sorrow, repeatedly saying 'Oh father, oh mother, oh son.'

हाय, मैं बार-बार 'हे पिता, हे माता, हे पुत्र' कहता हुआ मन का पात्र बन गया हूँ, दुःख भोगने वालों का भोजन।

हे बुद्धे भगिनि भ्रातुरर्थितां पूरयाशु मे | आवयोर्दुःखमोक्षाय विचारय मुनेर्गिरः || ३६ ||

he buddhe bhagini bhrāturarthitāṃ pūrayāśu me | āvayorduḥkhamokṣāya vicāraya munergiraḥ || 36 ||

English

O wise sister, fulfill my brother's request quickly | For the liberation from our sorrow, consider the sage's words || 36 ||

हे बुद्धिमान बहन, मेरे भाई की प्रार्थना को शीघ्र पूरा करो | हम दोनों के दुःख से मुक्ति के लिए मुनि के वचनों का विचार करो || ३६ ||

त्वां पादपतितः प्रीत्या याचे सति सुते मते | तेन भव्ये भवोच्छेदभूतये सुस्थिरा भव || ३७ ||

tvāṃ pādapatitaḥ prītyā yāce sati sute mate | tena bhavye bhavocchedabhūtaye susthirā bhava || 37 ||

English

I, fallen at your feet, humbly request you, O virtuous one, with a son | May you be steadfast for the future destruction of existence || 37 ||

मैं, आपके चरणों में गिरा हुआ, प्रेम से आपसे प्रार्थना करता हूँ, हे सती सुत वाली | भविष्य में अस्तित्व के विनाश के लिए स्थिर रहो || ३७ ||

English

कृतमतिं शतशो विचारितं यद्यदि तदुपैति न मानसस्य बुद्धिः | भवति तदफलं शरद्धनाभं सततमतो मतिरेव कार्यसारः || ४० ||

kṛtamatiṃ śataśo vicāritaṃ yadyadi tadupaiti na mānasasya buddhiḥ | bhavati tadaphalaṃ śraddhanābhaṃ satatamato matireva kāryasāraḥ || 40 ||
