śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | atha sthitiprakaraṇādanantaramidaṃ śṛṇu | upaśamaprakaraṇaṃ jñātaṃ nirvāṇakāri yat || 1 ||
Shri Vasishtha said: Now, after the chapter on stability, listen to this chapter on tranquility, which is known to lead to liberation.
श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: अब, स्थिरता के अध्याय के बाद, इस उपशम (शांति) के अध्याय को सुनो, जो मोक्ष का कारण ज्ञात है।
श्रीवाल्मीकिरुवाच | शरत्तारकिताकाशस्तिमितायां सुसंसदि | कथयत्येवमाह्लादि वसिष्ठे पावनं वचः || २ ||
śrīvālmīkiruvāca | śarattārakitākāśastimitāyāṃ susaṃsadi | kathayatyevamāhlādi vasisthte pāvanaṃ vacaḥ || 2 ||
Shri Valmiki said: In the clear autumn sky adorned with stars, in the pleasant assembly, Vasishtha spoke these purifying words, causing great joy.
श्री वाल्मीकि ने कहा: तारों से सजे साफ शरद आकाश में, सुंदर सभा में, वसिष्ठ ने ये पवित्र वचन कहे, जो बड़ी आह्लाद उत्पन्न करते हैं।
श्रवणार्थित्वमौनस्थपार्थिवे संसदन्तरे | निर्वात इव निस्पन्दकमले कमलाकरे || ३ ||
śravaṇārthitvamounasthapārthive saṃsadantare | nirvāta iva nispandakamale kamalākare || 3 ||
In the assembly of the earth, eager to listen and silent, like a windless, motionless lotus in the hands of the goddess.
पृथ्वी की सभा में, सुनने के लिए उत्सुक और मौन, जैसे हवा रहित, निश्चल कमल देवी के हाथों में।
विलासिनीषु संशान्तमदमोहबलासु च | शममन्तः प्रयान्तीषु चिरप्रव्रजितास्विव || ४ ||
vilāsinīṣu saṃśāntamadamohabalāsu ca | śamamantaḥ prayāntīṣu cirapravrajitāsviva || 4 ||
In the peaceful, enchanting women, free from the power of pride and delusion, tranquility prevails within them, as if they have long renounced the world.
शांत, मोहक महिलाओं में, जो अहंकार और भ्रम की शक्ति से मुक्त हैं, उनके भीतर शांति व्याप्त है, जैसे उन्होंने लंबे समय से संसार त्याग दिया हो।
कराम्भोरुहहंसेषु लीनेषु श्रवणादिव | मुक्तघुर्घुरवादेषु वायसेषु तराविव || ५ ||
karāmbhoruhaahaṃseṣu līneṣu śravaṇādiva | muktaghuṛghuravādeṣu vāyaseṣu tarāviva || 5 ||
In the swans that are immersed in the lotus pond, as if listening, and in the crows that are free from their harsh cries, as if crossing over.
कमल तालाब में डूबे हंसों में, जैसे सुन रहे हों, और कर्कश आवाज से मुक्त कौओं में, जैसे पार कर रहे हों।
नासाग्रपरिविश्रान्ततर्जन्यङ्गुलिकोटिषु | विचारयत्सु विज्ञानकलां तज्ज्ञेषु राजसु || ६ ||
nāsāgrapariviśrāntatarjanyaṅgulikōṭiṣu | vicārayatsu vijñānakalāṃ tajjñeṣu rājasu || 6 ||
With the tip of his nose resting on his thumb and forefinger, he contemplated the art of knowledge among the wise kings.
अपने नाक के अग्रभाग को अपने अंगूठे और तर्जनी पर रखकर, उसने बुद्धिमान राजाओं में ज्ञान की कला पर विचार किया।
रामे विकासमायाते प्रभात इव पङ्कजे | परित्यक्ततमः पीठे सूर्योदय इवाम्बरे || ७ ||
rāme vikāsamāyāte prabhāta iva paṅkaje | parityaktatamaḥ pīṭhe sūryoday iva ambare || 7 ||
As Rama blossomed like a lotus at dawn, the darkness was dispelled from the throne, like the sunrise in the sky.
जैसे सुबह के समय कमल खिलता है, वैसे ही राम के विकास से सिंहासन से अंधेरा दूर हो गया, जैसे सूर्योदय के समय आकाश से अंधेरा दूर होता है।
आकर्णयति वासिष्ठीर्गिरो दशरथे रसात् | कलापिनीव जीमूतनिर्ह्रादान्मुक्तवर्षणात् || ८ ||
ākarṇayati vāsiṣṭhīrgiro daśarathe rasāt | kalāpinīva jīmūtanirhrādānmmuktavarṣaṇāt || 8 ||
Dasharatha listened to the words of Vasistha with delight, as if listening to the sweet sound of a peacock's cry after the rain has stopped.
दशरथ ने वसिष्ठ की बातें आनंद से सुनीं, जैसे बारिश रुकने के बाद मोर की मीठी आवाज सुन रहे हों।
आहृत्य सर्वभोगेभ्यो मनो मर्कटचञ्चलम् | श्रवणं प्रति यत्नेन सारेण मन्त्रिणि स्थिते || ९ ||
āhṛtya sarvabhogebhyo mano markaṭacañcalam | śravaṇaṃ prati yatnena sāreṇa mantriṇi sthite || 9 ||
Withdrawing the mind from all pleasures, as restless as a monkey, he attentively listened to the essence of the minister's words.
सभी भोगों से मन को वापस लेकर, जो बंदर की तरह बेचैन है, उसने ध्यान से मंत्री की बातों की सार सुनी।
वसिष्ठोक्त्या परिज्ञातस्वात्मनीन्दुकलामले | लक्ष्मणे विलसल्लक्ष्ये शिक्षावलविचक्षणे || १० ||
vasiṣṭhoktyā parijñātasvātmanīndukalāmale | lakṣmaṇe vilasallakṣye śikṣāvalavicakṣaṇe || 10 ||
Lakshmana, who is skilled in archery and wise, recognized his own pure self through the teachings of Vasistha, which are like the spotless moon.
लक्ष्मण, जो धनुर्विद्या में निपुण और बुद्धिमान है, ने वसिष्ठ की शिक्षाओं द्वारा, जो निर्मल चंद्रमा की तरह हैं, अपने शुद्ध आत्मा को पहचाना।
शत्रुघ्ने शत्रुदलने चेतसा पूर्णतां गते अलमानन्दमायाते राकाचन्द्रोपमे स्थिते || ११ ||
śatrughne śatrudalane cetasā pūrṇatāṃ gate alamānandamāyāte rākācandropame sthite || 11 ||
When Shatrughna, the destroyer of enemies, attains complete satisfaction in his mind, he becomes as joyful as the full moon.
जब शत्रुघ्न, शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाला, अपने मन में पूर्ण संतुष्टि प्राप्त करता है, तो वह पूर्णिमा के चंद्रमा की तरह आनंदित हो जाता है।
सुमित्रे मित्रतां याते मानसे दुःखशीलिते विकासिहृदये जाते तत्काल इव पंकजे || १२ ||
sumitre mitratāṃ yāte mānase duḥkhaśīlite vikāsihṛdaye jāte tatkāla iva paṅkaje || 12 ||
When Sumitra attains friendship in her mind, her heart blooms like a lotus at that very moment, even though it was previously afflicted with sorrow.
जब सुमित्रा के मन में मित्रता आती है, तो उनका हृदय उसी क्षण कमल की तरह खिल उठता है, भले ही पहले दुःख से ग्रस्त था।
तत्रस्थेषु तथान्येषु तदा मुनिषु राजसु सुधौतचित्तरत्नेषु प्रोल्लसत्स्विव चेतसा || १३ ||
tatrasthēṣu tathānyēṣu tadā muniṣu rājasu sudhautacittaratnēṣu prollasatsviva cetasā || 13 ||
At that time, the minds of the sages and kings, who were present there, shone brightly like polished gems.
उस समय, वहाँ उपस्थित ऋषियों और राजाओं के मन चमकते हुए रत्नों की तरह चमक उठे।
उदभूत्पूरयन्नाशाः कल्पाभ्ररवमांसलः अथ मध्याह्नशंखानामब्धिघोषसमः स्वनः || १४ ||
udabhūtpūrayannāśāḥ kalpābhra-ravamāṃsalaḥ atha madhyāhnaśaṅkhānāmabdhighoṣasamaḥ svanaḥ || 14 ||
Then, the sound of the midday conch shells, filling the air with hope, resonated like the thunderous roar of the ocean.
तब, दोपहर के शंखों की ध्वनि, आशाओं से भरी हुई, समुद्र की गर्जना की तरह गूंज उठी।
महता तेन शब्देन तिरोधानं मुनेर्गिरः ययर्जलदनादेन कोकिलध्वनयो यथा || १५ ||
mahatā tena śabdena tirodhānaṃ munergiraḥ yayarjaladanādena kokiladhvanayo yathā || 15 ||
With that great sound, the sage's words were overshadowed, just as the sound of the cuckoo is overshadowed by the thunder.
उस प्रबल ध्वनि से ऋषि के शब्द ढंक गए, जैसे कोयल की आवाज गर्जना से ढंक जाती है।
मुनिरन्तरयांचक्रे स्वां वाचमथ संसदि | जितसारो गुणः केन महता समुदीर्यते || १६ ||
munirantarayāṃcakre svāṃ vācamatha saṃsadi | jitasāro guṇaḥ kena mahatā samudīryate || 16 ||
The sage, having paused for a moment, spoke his words in the assembly: 'By what great virtue does a quality, devoid of essence, arise?'
मुनि ने एक क्षण के लिए रुककर अपने शब्द सभा में कहे: 'किस महान गुण से सारहीन गुण उत्पन्न होता है?'
मुहूर्तमात्रं विश्रम्य श्रुत्वा मध्याह्ननिःस्वनम् | घने कोलाहले शान्ते रामं मुनिरुवाच ह || १७ ||
muhūrtamātraṃ viśramya śrutvā madhyāhnaniḥsvanam | ghane kolāhale śānte rāmaṃ muniruvāca ha || 17 ||
After resting for a moment and hearing the sound of midday, the sage spoke to Rama when the loud noise in the dense forest subsided.
एक क्षण के लिए विश्राम करके और मध्याह्न की ध्वनि सुनकर, जब घने वन में शोर शान्त हो गया, तब मुनि ने राम से कहा।
रामाद्यतनमेतावदाह्णिकं कथितं मया | प्रातरन्यत्तु वक्ष्यामो वक्तव्यमरिमर्दन || १८ ||
rāmādyatnametāvadāhṇikaṃ kathitaṃ mayā | prātaranyattu vakṣyāmo vaktavyamarimardana || 18 ||
I have narrated this much of the daily activities of Rama up to this point. In the morning, I will speak the rest that needs to be said, O destroyer of enemies.
मैंने राम की दैनिक गतिविधियों का इतना वर्णन किया है। सुबह मैं जो बाकी है वह कहूँगा, हे शत्रुओं के विनाशक।
इदं नियतितः प्राप्तं कर्तव्यं तद्विजन्मनाम् | मध्याह्नमुपपन्नं यत्कर्तव्यं नावसीदति || १९ ||
idaṃ niyatitaḥ prāptaṃ kartavyaṃ tadvijanmanām | madhyāhnamupapannaṃ yatkartavyaṃ nāvasīdati || 19 ||
This has been obtained by destiny, and it is the duty of the twice-born. Whatever duty is appropriate at midday should not be neglected.
यह नियति से प्राप्त हुआ है, और यह द्विजों का कर्तव्य है। मध्याह्न में जो कर्तव्य हो, उसे नहीं छोड़ना चाहिए।
त्वमप्युत्तिष्ठ सुभग समस्ताचारसत्क्रियाम् | आचराचारचतुरस्नानदानार्चनादिकाम् || २० ||
tvamapyuttiṣṭha subhaga samastācārasatkriyām | ācarācāracatursnānadānārcanādikām || 20 ||
You too, O fortunate one, rise and perform all virtuous deeds, such as bathing, giving, and worshipping.
तुम भी, हे सौभाग्यशाली, उठो और सभी पवित्र कर्म करो, जैसे स्नान, दान और पूजा।
इत्युक्त्वा मुनिरुत्तस्थौ समं दशरथः प्रभुः| ससदाः सेन्दुरादित्य उदयाद्रितटादिव || २१ ||
ityuktvā muniruttasthau samaṃ daśarathaḥ prabhuḥ| sasadāḥ sendurāditya udayādritaṭādiva || 21 ||
Having said this, the sage stood up along with King Dasharatha, like the sun rising from the eastern mountain.
ऐसा कहकर मुनि उठे और दशरथ नरेश भी उठे, जैसे सूर्य पूर्वी पर्वत से उदय होता है।
तयोरुत्तिष्ठतो सर्वा सभोत्थातुमकम्पत| मन्दवातपरामृष्टा नलिनीवालिलोचना || २२ ||
tayoruttiṣṭhato sarvā sabhotthātumakampata| mandavātaparāmṛṣṭā nalinīvālilocanā || 22 ||
As they both stood up, the entire assembly rose with them, like lotus flowers swaying gently in the breeze.
जब वे दोनों उठे, तो सारी सभा भी उठी, जैसे हवा के झोंके से कमल के फूल हिलते हैं।
उत्तस्थौ सावतंसोत्थभृंगमण्डलमण्डिता| करिसेनेव सन्ध्याद्रावालोलकरपुष्करा || २३ ||
uttasthau sāvataṃsotthabhṛṅgamaṇḍalamaṇḍitā| kariseneva sandhyādrāvālolakarapuṣkarā || 23 ||
She stood up, adorned with a garland of bees buzzing around her lotus-like hands, like an elephant herd with swaying lotus-like ears.
वह उठी, उसके कमल जैसे हाथों पर भ्रमरों की माला सजी हुई थी, जैसे हाथी का झुंड झूलते कमल जैसे कानों के साथ।

Their limbs intertwined, their armlets crushed, the assembly was adorned with gems, like the red clouds at sunset.
उनके अंग एक-दूसरे से मिले हुए थे, उनकी बाजूबंद कुचली हुई थीं, सभा रत्नों से सजी हुई थी, जैसे सूर्यास्त के समय लाल बादल।

pataduttaṃsavibhrāntabhṛṅgopahitaghuṃghumā| mukuṭodddāmavidyotaśakracāpīkṛtāmbarā || 25 ||
With the buzzing of bees around the fallen garlands, the crown shining brightly, the sky appeared like Indra's bow.
गिरे हुए मालाओं पर भ्रमरों की भनभनाहट के साथ, मुकुट चमक रहा था, आकाश इंद्र के धनुष की तरह दिख रहा था।
कान्तालताहस्तदलचारुचामरमंजरी वनलेखेव विक्षुब्धवरवारणमण्डला || २६ ||
kāntālatāhastadalacārucaamaramañjarī vanalekheva vikṣubdhvaravāraṇamaṇḍalā || 26 ||
The beautiful fly-whisk made of the leaves of the beloved creeper, like a forest line, is disturbed by the circle of excellent elephants.
प्रिय लता के पत्तों से बना सुंदर चंवर, वन की रेखा की तरह, उत्तम हाथियों के मंडल से विक्षुब्ध है।
कचत्कटकभारक्तीकृतान्योन्यतताम्बरा वातव्याधूतपुष्पेव मन्दारवनमालिका || २७ ||
kacatkaṭakabhāraktīkṛtānyonyatatāmbarā vātavyādhūtapuṣpeva mandāravanaamālikā || 27 ||
The garlands of the Mandara forest, with their flowers scattered by the wind, are intertwined with each other, adorned with the weight of their ornaments.
मन्दार वन की मालाएँ, जिनके फूल हवा से बिखरे हुए हैं, एक-दूसरे से गुंथी हुई हैं, और अपने आभूषणों के भार से सजी हुई हैं।
कर्पूरकणनीहाररचितामलवारिदा शरहिक्तटमालेव प्रसृताशेषभूमिका || २८ ||
karpūrakaṇanīhāraracitāmalavāridā śarahiktatamāleva prasṛtāśeṣabhūmikā || 28 ||
The pure water, adorned with the mist of camphor particles, spreads over the entire earth like a garland on the shore of the autumn lake.
कर्पूर के कणों के कुहरे से सजा शुद्ध जल, शरद् ऋतु के तालाब के किनारे की माला की तरह, पूरी पृथ्वी पर फैला हुआ है।
लोलमौलिमणिप्रान्तपाटलाम्बरकोटरा संध्येवाफुल्लनीलाला कार्यसंहारकारिणी || २९ ||
lolamaulimaṇiprāntapāṭalāmbarakoṭarā saṃdhyevāphullanīlālā kāryasaṃhārakāriṇī || 29 ||
With the swaying crown jewels at the edge of her red garment, she appears like the twilight with blooming blue lotuses, the destroyer of all actions.
अपने लाल वस्त्र के किनारे पर लहराते मुकुट मणियों के साथ, वह खिले हुए नीले कमलों वाली संध्या की तरह दिखाई देती है, जो सभी कार्यों का विनाश करने वाली है।

With a face like a lotus filled with gem-like water drops, she is surrounded by lotus stalks, and her anklets make a charming sound.
जिसका चेहरा मणि जैसी बूंदों से भरे कमल की तरह है, वह कमल की डंठलों से घिरी हुई है, और उसके पैरों में पहने घुंघरू मधुर ध्वनि करते हैं।
संतता सा सभोत्तस्थौ भूभृच्छतसमाकुला | भूतसंततिसंभ्रान्ता सृष्टिर्नवमिवोदिता || ३१ ||
santatā sā sabhottasthau bhūbhṛcchatasamākulā | bhūtasaṃtatisaṃbhrāntā sṛṣṭirnavamivoditā || 31 ||
The continuous creation arose, filled with various beings, as if a new creation had been proclaimed, confused by the continuity of beings.
सृष्टि की निरन्तरता उभरी, जैसे नयी सृष्टि की घोषणा हुई हो, जीवों की निरन्तरता से भरपूर और उलझन में डाल दी गई हो।
प्रणम्याथ नृपं भूपा निर्ययुर्नृपमन्दिरात् | शक्रचापीकृता रत्नैरम्बुधेरिववीचयः || ३२ ||
praṇamyātha nṛpaṃ bhūpā niryayurnṛpamandirāt | śakracāpīkṛtā ratnairambudherivavīcayaḥ || 32 ||
After bowing to the king, the rulers emerged from the palace, adorned with jewels like the rays of the moon.
राजा को प्रणाम करके, राजाओं ने महल से बाहर निकलना शुरू किया, चन्द्रमा की किरणों के समान रत्नों से अलंकृत।
सुमन्त्रो मन्त्रिणश्चैव वसिष्ठमथ भूमिपम् | प्रणम्य जग्मुः स्नानाय रसविज्ञानकोविदाः || ३३ ||
sumantro mantriṇaścaiva vasiṣṭhamatha bhūmipam | praṇamya jagmuḥ snānāya rasavijñānakovidāḥ || 33 ||
Sumantra and the ministers, along with Vasistha and the king, bowed and went for bathing, skilled in the knowledge of essences.
सुमन्त्र और मन्त्री, वसिष्ठ और राजा के साथ, प्रणाम करके स्नान करने के लिए गए, जो रसों के ज्ञान में कुशल थे।

Vamadeva and others, along with Visvamitra and others, placed Vasistha in front and stood ready to receive.

King Dasharatha, after worshipping the assembly of sages, was released and went for his own duties, the subduer of enemies.
राजा दशरथ, ऋषियों की सभा की पूजा करके, छोड़ दिया गया और अपने कार्यों के लिए गया, शत्रुओं का दमन करने वाला।
वनं वनास्पदा जग्मुर्व्योम व्योमनिवासिनःनगरं नागराश्चैव प्रातरागमनाय ते || ३६ ||
vanaṃ vanāspadā jagmurvyoma vyomanivāsinaḥnagaraṃ nāgarāścaiva prātarāgamanāya te || 36 ||
The forest-dwellers went to the forest, the sky-dwellers to the sky, and the city-dwellers to the city, all for their morning duties.
वनवासी वन में गए, आकाशवासी आकाश में गए, और नगरवासी नगर में गए, सभी अपने सुबह के कार्यों के लिए।

Out of affection, the king and Vasistha requested the lord, and Visvamitra invited him to spend the night at Vasistha's hermitage.

Vasistha, accompanied by the chief sages, kings, and other sages, was worshipped by Rama and all the sons of Dasaratha.
वसिष्ठ, मुख्य ऋषियों, राजाओं और अन्य ऋषियों के साथ, राम और दशरथ के सभी पुत्रों द्वारा पूजा जाता था।
जगाम स्वाश्रमं श्रीमान्सर्वलोकनमस्कृतःअनुयातः सुरौघेन ब्रह्मलोकमिवाब्जजः || ३९ ||
jagāma svāśramaṃ śrīmānsarvalokanamaskṛtaḥanuyātaḥ suraughena brahmalokamivābjajaḥ || 39 ||
The glorious one went to his hermitage, revered by all the worlds, followed by a host of gods, as if he were going to Brahmaloka.
श्रीमान अपने आश्रम को गया, सभी लोगों द्वारा सम्मानित, देवताओं के एक समूह द्वारा अनुगमन किया गया, मानो वह ब्रह्मलोक जा रहा हो।

From that place, Rama and the other sons of Dasaratha, bowing at his feet, were dismissed by him.

नभश्चरान्धरणिचरानधश्चरान्विसृज्य संस्तुतगुणगोचरांश्च तान् | यथाक्रमं स्वगृहमुदारसत्त्ववांश्चकार तां द्विजजनवासरक्रियाम् || ४१ ||
nabhaścarāndharaṇicarānadhaścarānvisṛjya saṃstutaguṇagocarāṃśca tān | yathākramaṃ svagṛhamudārasattvavāṃścakāra tāṃ dvijajanavāsarakriyām || 41 ||
