The directions had turned a little dark still, a little red with the coming dawn, and the stars in the sky had thinned out, as if the sky itself had been swept clean.
Then, followed by the sages and accompanied by Vishvamitra, the glorious sage suddenly mounted the chariot, like Brahma, who was born from a lotus, mounting a lotus.

There he entered Dasharatha's lovely assembly hall, where everyone bowed down before him, like a royal swan entering a lotus pond, followed by a flock of swans.
The officers of state, with the ministers first, the townsfolk headed by Suhotra, the servants headed by Malava, and the garland-bearers headed by Paura.
when the noise of the assembly had quieted down, when the heralds had fallen silent, and the usual words of greeting had been exchanged, in that calm hall,
Their eyes flickered with the sunlight falling through the lattice-windows, and their skin glowed soft and golden in the mass of light thrown off by the jewels. Restless as they were, they had set their restlessness aside, standing silent and holding white fly-whisks.
The courtyard floor shone with the color of sunlight reflected in pearls. Bees swarmed there in confusion, mistaking that gleam for real sunlight, and could not find the heap of flowers, wandering about like a cloud adrift in the sky.
Because of their merit, people heard the words that flowed from Vasishtha's mouth. That speech spread wonder from one person to the next among the good and noble gathered there; in that meeting of good people it was gentle in word and sound, charming, wished for by everyone, and pleasing with countless good qualities.
From the city, from the sky, and from the forest, a crowd of Siddhas, Vidyadharas, noble sages and Brahmins pressed close around Vasishtha on every side. A hush fell; then, softly and without noise, words began to be spoken, full of respect.
The breeze blew reddish-gold, rich with the color of the honey that bees, buried deep in the soft cups of blooming red lotuses, had drawn out. In that breeze, the songs of daybreak were drowned by the tinkling of swaying bells.

The smoke of aloe-wood and tagara incense, mixed with the scent of sandalwood, drifted through air streaked with the wild fragrance of fresh flower garlands. Carrying with it faint traces of the lotus-scent from the canopy above, it drifted over ground scattered with fluttering flower-pollen, where bees could be told apart only by the sound of their humming.
