śrīvasiṣṭha uvācavidehamuktā ye rāma te girāmiha gocarenaiva tiṣṭhanti tasmāttvaṃ jīvanmuktimimāṃ śrṛṇu || 1 ||
Sri Vasishtha said: Rama, those who are freed without a body do not fall within the reach of words here. So listen now to this teaching about being freed while still alive.
Truly, when a person's wishes come and go freely, in the heart and in the world outside, without any scheming behind them, that itself is what makes a person free while still alive, right here in this body.
Rama, craving that is swollen with obsession for outer things is called bound craving. Craving that is free from obsession for anything at all is called free craving.
A person whose craving was there before, but who now, even in the present, always stays free of pain and stays whole and undivided, that person the wise call free.
Give up the wish for bondage and also the wish for freedom. Give up the states of pleasure and pain, and give up hoping for what is real or what is unreal. Stay still, like a great ocean that no wave disturbs.
Rama, this world of things is not really yours, and you are not this body. This world is something entirely different from you, and you, Rama, are someone entirely different from it.
The world that is not truly real has arisen looking as if it were real, though it is not. Once you have gone beyond being any such fixed thing yourself, how could craving even arise?
And there is something else, Rama. In the mind of a person who thinks and looks closely, a firm conviction arises, good man, and it takes a wide form of four kinds.
From my feet to the top of my head, I am made by my mother and father, this is the first conviction, Rama, and it leads to bondage, because it comes from looking at what is not real.
I am the very self of this whole web of the world and all its things, I am everything, and I never perish, this is the third conviction, Rama, and it too is for liberation.
Of these, the first is said to be capable of binding through craving. The other three are free of craving and clear — they are the joys of those who are liberated while still alive.
That same reality is called the void, nature, maya, brahman-knowledge — also Shiva, the person, the ruling lord, the eternal. All of these are said to be nothing but the self.
All this is always real, nothing but real — here there is no twoness, no otherness at all. This world exists filled with true knowledge, not with any other kind of thought.
Just as the ocean, right down to the underworld, is completely filled with water, so this whole world, from Brahma down to a blade of grass, is completely filled with the infinite self.
So everything is true, real, and everlasting; nothing false exists anywhere. The whole ocean is nothing but water; the waves and everything else are nothing apart from it.
Bangles, armlets, anklets, and other ornaments are not different from gold. In the same way, the countless forms appearing as trees and grass are not different from the self.
Through the divisions of the many and the one, and through the play of shaping the world, the one power made of the highest self — itself without a second — unfolds and expands.
In your own affairs and in another's, in everything, at all times, whether some work is lost or it prospers, do not take hold of pleasure or pain over it.
Take shelter in oneness in your feeling, and let your very being be made of oneness alone — but do not hold to oneness in your actions. Become one who holds both the many and the one together.
Do not fall, driven by the storm-wind of feeling and imagining, into the fearful grounds of worldly existence, into chasms full of danger, the way an elephant falls into a pit.
dvaitaṃ na saṃbhavati cittamayaṃ mahātmannātmanyathaikyamapi na dvitayoditātmaadvaitamaikyarahitaṃ satatoditaṃ satsarvaṃ na kiṃcidapi cāhurataḥ svarūpam || 31 ||
Duality, great one, is only a thing of the mind — it does not truly exist. Oneness, too, does not truly hold for the self, since the self never arose as two. What is truly one is beyond even the idea of oneness. It is being that always is; it is everything, and yet it is nothing at all — that is what they call its true nature.
naivāhamasti naca nāma jaganti santi sarvaṃ ca vidyata idaṃ nanu nirvikāramvijñānamātramavabhāsata eva śāntaṃ nāsanna sajjagadidaṃ ca sadeti viddhi || 32 ||
I do not truly exist, and these worlds do not truly exist either — yet all this is here all the same. Only pure, changeless awareness is shining, at peace, neither unreal nor real. Know that this world, too, is real in that same way.
It is the supreme immortal, without a beginning, the light behind all lights, ageless, unborn, unthinkable, without parts, unchanging, free of the whole net of the senses. It is the life of life itself, beyond all reckoning, the cause of causes.
The lord who always shines, resting in the spreading light of awareness, is the seed of all experience, to be shown as the very nature of your own self. This Brahman within cannot be tasted as something separate — it alone is always everything. Know that you, I, and this world too are that; let this be your conviction within.
