15.18.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yuktāśayānāṃ mahatāmahatānāṃ kudṛṣṭibhiḥ | svabhāvo'yaṃ mahābāho līlayā caratāmiha || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: O mighty-armed one, this is the nature of great souls, their minds well composed, untouched by wrong views, as they move through this world at play.

viharannapi saṃsāre jīvanmuktamanā muniḥ | ādimadhyāntavirasā vihasejjāgatīrgatīḥ || 2 ||

Even while living amid the world, the sage whose mind is free while still alive laughs at the ways of the world, which are without any real taste from beginning to middle to end.

sarvaprakṛtakāryastho madhyasthaḥ sarvadṛṣṭiṣu | dhyeyaṃ taṃ vāsanātyāgamavalambya vyavasthitaḥ || 3 ||

Taking part in every ordinary activity, staying even-minded toward everything he sees, he remains firm, holding the giving up of desire as the one thing worth dwelling on in his mind.

sarvatra vigatodvegaḥ sarvārthaparipoṣakaḥ | vivekodyotadṛṣṭātmā prabodhopavanasthitiḥ || 4 ||

Free from agitation everywhere, he supports every true purpose; his self is seen in the light of clear discernment, and he lives as if resting in a garden of full awakening.

sarvātītapadālambī pūrṇenduśiśirāśayaḥ | nodvegī na ca tuṣṭātmā saṃsāre nāvasīdati || 5 ||

Resting on the state that is beyond everything, his mind cool like the full moon, neither anxious nor pleased with himself, he does not sink down in this world.

sarvaśatruṣu madhyastho dayādākṣiṇyasaṃyutaḥ | prāptakarmakaro'gryāṇāṃ saṃsāre nāvasīdati || 6 ||

Staying fair even toward all his enemies, full of kindness and courtesy, he does whatever task comes to him the way the best of men do, so he does not sink down in this world.

nābhinandati na dveṣṭi na śocati na kāṅkṣati | maunasthaḥ prakṛtārambhī saṃsāre nāvasīdati || 7 ||

He does not celebrate, does not hate, does not grieve, does not crave. Staying quiet, doing only the ordinary things that need doing, he does not sink down in this world.

pṛṣṭaḥ sanprakṛtaṃ vakti na pṛṣṭaḥ sthāṇuvatsthitaḥ | īhitānīhitairmuktaḥ saṃsāre nāvasīdati || 8 ||

Asked, he says what fits the moment; not asked, he stays still like a post. Free from both what is wanted and what is not wanted, he does not sink down in this world.

sarvasyābhimataṃ vaktā coditaḥ peśaloktimān | āśayajñaśca bhūtānāṃ saṃsāre nāvasīdati || 9 ||

When urged to speak, he says what pleases everyone, in gentle words, and because he knows what is in the hearts of all beings, he does not sink down in this world.

yuktāyuktadṛśā grastamāśopahataceṣṭitam | jānāti lokadṛṣṭāntaṃ karakoṭarabilvavat || 10 ||

With an eye that tells right from wrong, he sees that the world is caught in craving and its actions are ruined, just as clearly as a fruit resting in the hollow of the hand is seen.

param padamupārūḍho bhaṅgurāṃ jāgatīṃ sthitim | antaḥśītalyā buddhyā hasanniva nirīkṣate || 11 ||

Having risen to the highest state, he looks at this crumbling worldly life with a mind cool and calm within, almost smiling.

jitacittā mahātmāno ye hi dṛṣṭaparāvarāḥ | svabhāva īdṛśastēṣāṃ kathitastava rāghava || 12 ||

Great souls who have conquered their minds, who have seen both the higher and the lower truths, such, Raghava, is their nature, as I have told you.

vayaṃ tu vaktuṃ mūrkhāṇāmajitātmīyacetasām | bhogakardamamagnānāṃ na vidmo'bhimataṃ matam || 13 ||

But as for us, we do not know how to describe the thinking that fools prefer, fools whose own minds are unconquered and who are sunk in the mud of pleasure.

teṣāmabhimatā nāryo bhāvābhāvavibhūṣitāḥ | jvālānarakavahnīnāṃ yāstāḥ kanakarociṣaḥ || 14 ||

The women they desire, decked out in charms both real and false, are nothing but the golden flames of hell-fire.

anarthagahanāścārthā vyarthānarthakadarthanāḥ | diśanto duḥkhasaṃrambhamabhitaḥ prahitāpadaḥ || 15 ||

Their goals are thick with disaster, useless, harmful, and full of torment, pointing the way to a rush of suffering and sending misfortune on every side.

phalasaṃdhīni karmāṇi nānācāramayāni ca | sukhaduḥkhāvapūrṇāni tāni vaktuṃ na śaknumaḥ || 16 ||

We are not able to describe their actions, which are tied to results, made up of every kind of conduct, and filled with pleasure and pain.

pūrṇāṃ dṛṣṭimavaṣṭabhya dhyeyatyāgavilāsinīm | jīvanmuktatayā svastho loke vihara rāghava || 17 ||

Hold firmly to that full vision, the one that delights in giving up any single thing to fix the mind on, and, being free while still alive, live at ease in the world, Raghava.

antaḥ saṃtyaktasarvāśo vītarāgo vivāsanaḥ | bahiḥ sarvasamācāro loke vihara rāghava || 18 ||

Give up every desire within, be free of passion and free of every trace of old habit, while outwardly following all ordinary conduct, and so live in the world, Raghava.

udāraḥ peśalācāraḥ sarvācārānuvṛttimān | antaḥ sarvaparityāgī loke vihara rāghava || 19 ||

Be generous and gentle in your conduct, following every custom, while giving up everything within, and live in the world, Raghava.

pravicārya daśāḥ sarvā yadatucchaṃ paraṃ padam | tadeva bhāvenālambya loke vihara rāghava || 20 ||

Look closely at every condition of life, and then, holding with your whole heart to that supreme state which is no small thing, live in the world, Raghava.

antarnairāśyamādāya bahirāśonmukhehitaḥ | bahistapto'ntarāśīto loke vihara rāghava || 21 ||

Hold no craving within, while outwardly acting as if drawn toward desire; stay heated on the outside but cool within, and live in the world, Raghava.

bahiḥ kṛtrimasaṃrambho hṛdi saṃrambhavarjitaḥ | kartā bahirakartāntarloke vihara rāghava || 22 ||

Show a put-on eagerness on the outside, while your heart stays free of any real excitement; be a doer on the outside and no doer within, and live in the world, Raghava.

jñātavānasi sarveṣāṃ bhāvānāṃ samyagantaram | yathecchasi tathā dṛṣṭyā loke vihara rāghava || 23 ||

You have understood clearly the difference between all things. See them however you wish, and live in the world that way, Raghava.

kṛtrimollāsaharṣasthaḥ kṛtrimodvegagarhaṇaḥ | kṛtrimārambhasaṃrambho loke vihara rāghava || 24 ||

Live in the world, Raghava, with delight and joy that are only put on, with distress and blame that are only put on, and with effort and eagerness that are only put on.

tyaktāhaṃkṛtirāśvastamatirākāśaśobhanaḥ | agṛhītakalaṅkāṅko loke vihara rāghava || 25 ||

Give up the feeling that you are the one doing everything, let your mind rest at ease, shine like the clear sky, take on no mark of stain, and live in the world this way, Raghava.

āśāpāśaśatonmuktaḥ samaḥ sarvāsu vṛttiṣu| bahiḥ prakṛtikāryastho loke vihara rāghava || 26 ||

Free yourself from the hundreds of ropes of desire, stay even minded in every state, keep doing the ordinary work of the world on the outside, and live in the world this way, Raghava.

na bandho'sti na mokṣo'sti dehinah paramārthatḥ| mithyeyamindrajālaśrīḥ saṃsāraparivartinī || 27 ||

In ultimate truth there is no bondage and no release for anyone who has a body. This turning wheel of the world, with all its splendor, is nothing but a false magic show.

bhrāntimātramidaṃ mohājjagadrāghava dṛśyate| janitapratyayaṃ sphāraṃ jalaṃ tīvrātape yathā || 28 ||

This world you see, Raghava, is nothing but delusion born of confusion, like the wide stretch of water that fierce sunlight makes you believe is there.

abaddhasyaikarūpasya sarvagasyātmanaḥ katham| bandhaḥ syāttadabhāve tu mokṣaḥ kasya vidhīyate || 29 ||

The self is never bound, it is one and the same everywhere, it reaches everywhere, so how could it ever be in bondage? And if there is no bondage, then for whom is liberation to be given?

atattvajñānajāteyaṃ saṃsārabhrāntirātatā| tattvajñānātkṣayaṃ yāti rajjvāmiva bhujaṅgadhīḥ || 30 ||

This vast delusion of the world is born only from not knowing the truth. Knowledge of the truth ends it, the way the thought of a snake ends when you see it is only a rope.

jñātavānasi tattvaṃ svamekayā sūkṣmayā dhiyā | jāto'si nirahaṃkāro vyomavattitṣṭha nirmalaḥ || 31 ||

With one subtle act of understanding, you have come to know your own true nature. You have become free of the sense of I. Now stay pure, like the open sky.

jño'si tvitthaṃ tadakhilāḥ suhṛdbāndhavavāsanāḥ | saṃtyajāsatsvabhāvasya kā nāma kila bhāvanā || 32 ||

You are indeed one who knows. So give up completely all your attachment to friends and family. Their true nature is unreal, so what, then, is the meaning of holding a feeling for them?

api cetthaṃ tadanyastvaṃ sattvavānanumīyase | idaṃ prathamataḥ prāptaṃ paramādapi kāraṇāt || 33 ||

And even if, by this reasoning, you are taken to be someone else, a real, solid being, know that this too was first produced, and produced from a cause higher than itself.

bhogabandhujagadbhāvaiḥ karmabhiśca śubhāśubhaiḥ | ātmano nāsti saṃbandhaḥ kimetānanuśocasi || 34 ||

The self has no connection at all with pleasures, with kin, with the things of this world, or with good and bad deeds. Why then do you grieve over them?

For someone who has come to know that he is nothing but the one true self, fear has no hold at all, Rama. Why, then, are you afraid of this world, which is only a delusion?

ajātasya satobandhorbandhuduḥkhasukhabhramaiḥ | kaste rāghava saṃbandho yadetānanuśocasi || 36 ||

You are unborn, and you truly exist as you are. What connection, then, can you have, Raghava, with these illusions of grief and joy over kinsfolk, that you should mourn for them?

tvaṃ cedbabhūvitha purā tathedānīṃ bhaviṣyasi | adya ceha sthito'sīti jñātavānasi niścayam || 37 ||

You existed before in exactly this way, you will exist now in the same way, and you know for certain that today, too, you stand here just as you are.

385.18.38

tadānantaragānanyānprāṇādīnnikaṭasthitān | bandhūnatītānsubahūnkasmāttvaṃ nānuśocasi || 38 ||

Then why do you not grieve, too, for all those other kinsmen close to you, beginning with your own breath, who, in between, have passed away in such great numbers?

pūrvamanyastathedānīṃ babhūvitha bhaviṣyasi | yadi rāma tathāpi tvaṃ sadrūpaṃ kiṃ vimuhyasi || 39 ||

Even if, Rama, you were someone different before, are someone different now, and will become someone different again, through it all you are still real being itself. Why be confused?

purā bhūtvādya bhūtvā ca bhūyaścennabhaviṣyasi | tathāpi kṣīṇasaṃsāraḥ kimarthamanuśocasi || 40 ||

Having existed before, and existing today, even if you will not exist again after this, even then all that will have happened is that your round of rebirth has come to an end. Why grieve over that?

tasmānna duḥkhitā yuktā prākṛte jāgate krame| tathaiva muditā yuktā yuktaṃ kāryānuvartanam || 41 ||

So it is not right to be sorrowful over the natural course of this world, and it is just as wrong to be overjoyed by it. What is right is only to carry on doing what needs to be done.

mā gaccha duḥkhitāṃ rāma sukhitāmapi mā vraja| samatāmehi sarvatra paramātmā hi sarvagaḥ || 42 ||

Rama, do not go toward sorrow, and do not go toward joy either. Come to a state of evenness in everything, for the highest self is present everywhere.

anantaḥ satsvarūpastvaṃ khamivātitatāntaram| prakāśo nityaśuddhastvaṃ jvālānāmiva koṭaram || 43 ||

You are without end, real by nature, your depths stretched out wide like the sky. You are light itself, forever pure, like a hollow tree trunk glowing with the flame inside it.

445.18.44

jāgatānāṃ padārthānāmadṛṣṭātmatanustanuḥ| hṛtstho'si hāramuktānāmekastanturivātataḥ || 44 ||

You are the hidden, subtle self inside every thing in this world. You sit in the heart, running through them all like one thread strung through a string of pearls.

This is simply the way this cycle of birth and death works: what has once become a thing becomes it again. Only the ignorant man is caught in this, not the one who knows. You are one who knows, Rama, so be happy.

svarūpamidamasyaastu saṃsṛteḥ satatādhimat | ajñānātsphāratāmeti jñātavānasi sanmate || 46 ||

This is the true nature of that cycle: it is always full of distress. It grows and spreads only through ignorance. You, wise one, have understood this.

rūpaṃ kimanyadbhavatu bhramamātrādṛte bhrame | svapnamātrādṛte svapne bhavatyanyo hi kaḥ kramaḥ || 47 ||

In an illusion, what could its form be, other than the illusion itself? In a dream, what happens there, other than the dream itself?

sarvaśakteriyaṃ śaktirbhramamātramayaṃ tathā | rāma dṛśyata evedamābhānamatibhāsvaraṃ || 48 ||

This power of the all-powerful self is, in the same way, made only of illusion. Rama, this is only seen as a very bright appearance.

subandhuḥ kasyacitkaḥ syādih na kaścidapyariḥ | sadā sarve ca sarvasya sarvaṃ sarveśvarecchayā || 49 ||

Here, who is truly anyone's friend? And no one, either, is truly anyone's enemy. By the will of the Lord of all, everyone is everything to everyone, at all times.

ālūnaśīrṇamakhilamidamanyonyasaṃśritam | anārataṃ yāti jagattaraṅgaugha ivāmbhasaḥ || 50 ||

This whole world, each part leaning on the other, is endlessly cut down and worn away. It moves on and on, like a flood of waves in water.

adha ūrdhvatvamāyāti yātyūrdhvatvamadhastathā | saṃsārasya calasyāsya cakranemirivābhitaḥ || 51 ||

In this ever-turning world, what is low rises high, and what is high sinks low, all around, like the rim of a turning wheel.

svargasthā narakaṃ yānti nārakāśca triviṣṭapam | yoneryonyantaraṃ yānti dvīpāddvīpāntaraṃ janāḥ || 52 ||

Those in heaven go to hell, and those in hell go to heaven. People pass from one womb to another, from one land to another.

dhīrāḥ kārpaṇyamāyānti kṛpaṇā yānti dhīratām | parisfuranti bhūtāni pātotpātaśatabhramaiḥ || 53 ||

The steady and brave become weak and wretched, and the weak and wretched become steady and brave. Beings are tossed about through hundreds of falls, upheavals, and wanderings.

ekarūpasthiraṃ cakraṃ svacchaṃ saṃtāpavarjitam | neha saṃprāpyate kiṃcidagnau himakaṇo yathā || 54 ||

Nothing here keeps one same shape forever, calm and free of pain, not even the wheel of this world. It is as impossible as finding a snowflake sitting in fire.

ye ye nāma mahābhāgā bahavo bāndhavāstathā | vinaṣṭā eva dṛśyante te te katipayairdinaiḥ || 55 ||

However great and fortunate people are, however many kinsmen and friends they have, all of them are seen to die within just a few days.

paratātmīyatānyatvatvatvamattvādibhāvanā | neha satyā mahābāho dvicandrādidṛśo yathā || 56 ||

The ideas of other, mine, separate, you, and I are not real, strong-armed Rama. They are like seeing two moons instead of one.

ayaṃ bandhuḥ paraścāyamayaṃ cāhamayaṃ bhavān | iti mithyādṛśo rāma vigalantu tavādhunā || 57 ||

This one is family, that one is a stranger, this is me, this is you. Rama, let these false ideas melt away from you now.

krīḍārthaṃ vyavahārastha etābhirhatadṛṣṭibhiḥ | āmūlamantaśchinnābhirbahirvihara helayā || 58 ||

Stay in ordinary life only as if playing a game, now that these false ideas are destroyed and cut off at the root within you. Move through the outer world freely, with ease.

saṃsārasaraṇāvasyāṃ tathā vihara suvrata | na yathaiva śramśrānto vāsanābhāravāniva || 59 ||

So wander along this path of the world in that way, you who are true to your vows. Do not wander worn out with effort, as if weighed down by a load of desires.

yathā yathaiṣā kāryāṇi vāsanākṣayakāriṇī | vicāraṇā tavodeti saṃśāmyanti tathā tathā || 60 ||

The more this inner inquiry grows in you, the kind that wears away desires, the more your outward tasks and cares settle down and grow quiet.

ayaṃ bandhurayaṃ neti gaṇanā laghucetasām udāracaritānāṃ tu vigatāvaraṇaiva dhīḥ || 61 ||

This one is family, this one is not, only small-minded people count that way. But for people of noble, generous heart, the mind has thrown off its covering completely.

nāstameti na codeti yaścidākāśavanmahān sarvaṃ saṃpaśyati svasthaḥ svastho bhūmitalaṃ yathā || 63 ||

The great awareness, as vast as open space, never rises and never sets. It sees everything while completely at ease, the way someone sitting calmly can see the ground right in front of them.

All these many kinds of beings, Rama, are truly your own kin, yet none of them, Rama, belongs to you at all; not one is truly tied to you.

na tadasti na yatrāhaṃ na tadasti na yanmama iti nirṇīya dhīrāṇāṃ vigatāvaraṇaiva dhīḥ || 65 ||

There is no place where I am not, and there is nothing that is not mine. Once the wise understand this fully, their minds are completely free of any covering.

vividhajanmaśatāhitasaṃbhrame jagati bandhurabandhuritīkṣaṇambhramadaśaiva vivalgati vastutastribhuvanaṃ cirabandhurabandhvapi || 66 ||

In this world, thrown into confusion by hundreds of different births, seeing someone as kin or not kin is just an unsteady flicker of delusion. In truth, throughout the three worlds, everyone is at once an old, long-standing friend and no relation at all.
