श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | एतामनुसरन्राम चित्तसत्तामपावनीम् | संसारबीजकणिकां जीवबन्धनवागुराम् || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | etāmanusaranrāma cittasattāmapāvanīm | saṃsārabījakaṇikāṃ jīvabandhanavāgurām || 1 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: O Rama, follow this purifying essence of the mind, which is the seed of the world and the noose that binds the soul.

हिन्दी

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: हे राम, इस पवित्र चित्त की सत्ता का अनुसरण करो, जो संसार का बीज और जीव का बंधन है।

आत्मा त्यक्तात्मरूपाभो मलिनामाप तद्दृशम् | चित्तं समनुसंधत्ते धत्ते च कलनामलम् || २ ||

ātmā tyaktātmarūpābho malināmāpa taddṛśam | cittaṃ samanusaṃdhatte dhatte ca kalanāmalam || 2 ||

English

The self, which has abandoned its true form, appears impure and takes on that impure form. The mind clings to it and holds the stain of agitation.

हिन्दी

आत्मा, जो अपने सच्चे रूप को त्याग चुका है, अशुद्ध प्रतीत होता है और उस अशुद्ध रूप को धारण करता है। मन उससे चिपका रहता है और चंचलता का दाग धारण करता है।

वर्धमानमहामोहदायिनी भयकारिणी | तृष्णा विषलतारूपा मूर्च्छामेव प्रयच्छति || ३ ||

vardhamānamahāmohadāyinī bhayakāriṇī | tṛṣṇā viṣalatārūpā mūrcchāmeva prayacchati || 3 ||

English

The ever-increasing great delusion, which causes fear, takes the form of poisonous desire and leads to unconsciousness.

बढ़ती हुई महान भ्रांति, जो भय उत्पन्न करती है, विषैली इच्छा का रूप धारण करती है और बेहोशी की ओर ले जाती है।

यदा यदोदेति तदा महामोहप्रदायिनी | तृष्णा कृष्णानिशेवेयमनन्तात्मविकारिणी || ४ ||

yadā yadodeti tadā mahāmohapradāyinī | tṛṣṇā kṛṣṇāniśevayamanantātmavikāriṇī || 4 ||

English

Whenever it arises, it causes great delusion. Desire, which should be avoided at night, is the cause of the endless transformation of the self.

जब भी यह उठता है, तब यह महान भ्रांति उत्पन्न करता है। इच्छा, जिसे रात में टालना चाहिए, आत्मा के अनंत परिवर्तन का कारण है।

कल्पानलशिखादाहं सोढुं शक्ता हरादयः | तृष्णानलशिखादाहं सोढुं शक्ता न केचन || ५ ||

kalpānalaśikhādāhaṃ soḍhuṃ śaktā harādayaḥ | tṛṣṇānalaśikhādāhaṃ soḍhuṃ śaktā na kecana || 5 ||

English

The fire of desire is more intense than the fire of the apocalypse, which even the gods can endure. No one can endure the fire of desire.

हिन्दी

इच्छा की अग्नि प्रलय की अग्नि से भी अधिक तीव्र है, जिसे देवता भी सह सकते हैं। कोई भी इच्छा की अग्नि को सहन नहीं कर सकता।

तीक्ष्णा कृष्णा सुदीर्घा च वहत्यङ्गं सदा निजम् । शीतलैवासुखोदर्का घोरा तृष्णाकृपाणिका || ६ ||

tīkṣṇā kṛṣṇā sudīrghā ca vahatyangaṃ sadā nijam| śītalai vāsukhodarkā ghorā tṛṣṇākṛpāṇikā|| 6||

English

Sharp, dark, and very long, it always carries its own body. It is cool and gives pleasure, but it is terrible and the sword of thirst.

हिन्दी

तीखी, काली, और बहुत लंबी, यह हमेशा अपने शरीर को लेकर चलती है। यह ठंडी और सुखदायक है, लेकिन यह भयानक और प्यास की तलवार है।

यान्येतानि दुरन्तानि दुर्जराण्युन्नतानि च । तृष्णावल्ल्याः फलानीह तानि दुःखानि राघव || ७ ||

yānyetāni durantāni durjarāṇyunnatāni ca| tṛṣṇāvallyāḥ phalānīha tāni duḥkhāni rāghava|| 7||

English

All these are insurmountable, difficult to bear, and exalted. They are the fruits of thirst, and they are sorrows, O Raghava.

हिन्दी

ये सभी अजेय, सहन करने में कठिन, और उच्च हैं। ये प्यास के फल हैं, और ये दुःख हैं, हे रघुवंशी।

अदृश्यैवात्ति मांसास्थिरुधिरादि शरीरकात् । मनोबिलविलीनैषा तृष्णावनशुनी नृणाम् || ८ ||

adṛśyaivātti māṃsāsthirudhirādi śarīrakāt| manobilavilīnaiṣā tṛṣṇāvanaśunī nṛṇām|| 8||

English

It invisibly consumes flesh, bones, blood, and the body. It is dissolved in the fluctuations of the mind, this thirst is the destroyer of men.

हिन्दी

यह अदृश्य रूप से मांस, हड्डियाँ, रक्त, और शरीर को खाती है। यह मन के विचरणों में विलीन हो जाती है, यह प्यास मनुष्यों की नाशक है।

क्षणमुल्लासमायाति क्षणमायाति शून्यताम् । जडा विदलयत्याशु तृष्णाप्रावृट्तरङ्गिणी || ९ ||

kṣaṇamullāsamāyāti kṣaṇamāyāti śūnyatām| jadā vidalayatyāśu tṛṣṇāprāvṛttarāṅgiṇī|| 9||

English

It comes to joy for a moment, and then it comes to emptiness. It quickly destroys the inert, this wave of thirst.

हिन्दी

यह एक क्षण के लिए आनंद लाती है, और फिर यह शून्यता लाती है। यह जल्दी से जड़ को नष्ट करती है, यह प्यास की लहर।

दृष्टदैन्यो हतस्वान्तो हतौजा याति नीचताम् । मुह्यते रौति पतति तृष्णयाभिहतो जनः || १० ||

dṛṣṭadainyo hatasvānto hataujā yāti nīcatām| muhyate rauti patati tṛṣṇayābhihato janaḥ|| 10||

English

Seen as miserable, with lost self-control, and weakened, one goes to lowliness. Confused, crying, and falling, the person is struck by thirst.

हिन्दी

देखा जाता है कि दुःखी, स्वयं का नियंत्रण खो चुका, और कमजोर, एक नीच स्थिति में जाता है। भ्रमित, रोता हुआ, और गिरता हुआ, व्यक्ति प्यास से घायल होता है।

न स्थिता कोटरे यस्य तृष्णाकृष्णभुजङ्गमो|तस्य प्राणानिलाः स्वस्थाः पुंसो हृदयरन्ध्रगाः||११||

na sthitā koṭare yasya tṛṣṇākṛṣṇabhujaṅgamo|tasya prāṇānilāḥ svasthāḥ puṃso hṛdayarandhragāḥ||11||

English

One who is not afflicted by the dark serpent of desire, their vital breaths are calm and reside in the heart.

हिन्दी

जिसके हृदय में इच्छा का काला नाग नहीं रहता, उसके प्राणों की वायु स्वस्थ होती है और हृदय में रहती है।

नूनमस्तंगतो यत्र तृष्णाकृष्णनिशाक्रमः|पुण्यानि तत्र वर्धन्ते शुक्लपक्ष इवेन्दवः||१२||

nūnamastaṅgato yatra tṛṣṇākṛṣṇaniśākramaḥ|puṇyāni tatra vardhante śuklapakṣa ivendavaḥ||12||

English

Where the dark night of desire has set, virtues increase like the bright fortnight.

हिन्दी

जहाँ इच्छा की काली रात डूब गई है, वहाँ पुण्य बढ़ते हैं जैसे शुक्ल पक्ष के चाँद की तरह।

यो न तृष्णाघुणावल्ल्या क्षतः पुरुषपादपः|पुण्यप्रसूनैः स सदा दशां याति विकासिनीम्||१३||

yo na tṛṣṇāghuṇāvallyā kṣataḥ puruṣapādapaḥ|puṇyaprasūnaiḥ sa sadā daśāṃ yāti vikāsinīm||13||

English

One who is not afflicted by the faults of desire, that person always attains a blossoming state with virtuous fruits.

हिन्दी

जो इच्छा के दोषों से घायल नहीं है, वह व्यक्ति हमेशा पुण्य के फलों से खिलती अवस्था प्राप्त करता है।

अनन्ताकुलकल्लोला विवर्तावर्तसंकुला|प्रवहत्याशयारण्ये तृष्णान्धानां नदी नृणाम्||१४||

anantākulakallolā vivartāvartasaṅkulā|pravahatyāśayāraṇye tṛṣṇāndhānāṃ nadī nṛṇām||14||

English

In the forest of desires, the river of the blinded by desire flows, full of endless waves and whirlpools.

हिन्दी

इच्छाओं के जंगल में, इच्छा से अंधे होने वालों की नदी बहती है, जो अंतहीन तरंगों और भंवरों से भरी हुई है।

तृष्णयेमे जनाः सर्वे सूत्रयन्त्रपतत्रिवत्|भ्राम्यन्ते प्रविशीर्यन्ते संह्रियन्ते च भूरिशः||१५||

tṛṣṇayeme janāḥ sarve sūtrayantrapatatrivat|bhrāmyante praviśīryante saṃhriyante ca bhūriśaḥ||15||

English

All people are driven by desire, like puppets on strings, they wander, enter, and are destroyed in great numbers.

हिन्दी

सभी लोग इच्छा से चलाए जाते हैं, जैसे तारों पर लटके हुए कठपुतली, वे भटकते हैं, प्रवेश करते हैं, और बड़े पैमाने पर नष्ट हो जाते हैं।

मूलान्यपि सुसूक्ष्माणि कठिनाशयकर्कशा | तृष्णा परशुधारेव वल्गन्ति विनिकृन्तति || १६ ||

mūlānyapi susūkṣmāṇi kaṭhināśayakarkaśā | tṛṣṇā paraśudhāreva valganti vinikṛntati || 16 ||

English

Even the subtle roots are hard and sharp, like an axe, desire cuts and splits them.

हिन्दी

यहाँ कहा गया है कि सूक्ष्म मूल भी कठिन और कर्कश होते हैं, और तृष्णा की तरह एक परशु के समान, वे काटते और चीरते हैं।

निपतत्यवटे मूढस्तृष्णामनुसरज्जनः | नीलामनुपतञ्छ्वभ्रतृणशाखां यथैणकः || १७ ||

nipatatyavaṭe mūḍhas tṛṣṇāmanusarajjanaḥ | nīlāmanupatañchvabhratṛṇaśākhāṃ yathaiṇakaḥ || 17 ||

English

The foolish one, following desire, falls into a pit, like a deer following a mirage.

हिन्दी

मूढ़ व्यक्ति, तृष्णा का अनुसरण करते हुए, एक गड्ढे में गिर जाता है, जैसे एक हिरण एक मृगतृष्णा का अनुसरण करता है।

नोन्मत्तापि जरा चक्षुस्तथा जरयति क्षणात् | यथा जरयति क्षामा तृष्णा हृदयरूपिका || १८ ||

nonmattāpi jarā cakṣustathā jarayati kṣaṇāt | yathā jarayati kṣāmā tṛṣṇā hṛdayarūpikā || 18 ||

English

Even the wise one, old age weakens the eyes, similarly, desire weakens the heart in an instant.

हिन्दी

यहाँ कहा गया है कि बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति भी, बुढ़ापा आँखों को कमजोर कर देता है, उसी तरह, तृष्णा हृदय को एक पल में कमजोर कर देती है।

तृष्णयाशयकौशिक्या हृद्यमङ्गलभूतया | रूढया भगवानेष विष्णुर्वामनतां गतः || १९ ||

tṛṣṇayāśayakauśikyā hṛdyamaṅgalabhūtayā | rūḍhayā bhagavāneṣa viṣṇurvāmanatāṃ gataḥ || 19 ||

English

By the purity of the heart, which is the essence of auspiciousness, Lord Vishnu, who is the embodiment of desire, attains the form of Vamana.

हिन्दी

हृदय की शुद्धता, जो मंगलमयी है, से तृष्णा के रूप में भगवान् विष्णु वामन रूप धारण करते हैं।

कयाचिदेव दैविक्या हृदि ग्रथितयानया | तृष्णया भ्राम्यते व्योम्नि रज्ज्वेवार्कोऽन्वहं किल || २० ||

kayācideva daivikyā hṛdi grathitayānayā | tṛṣṇayā bhrāmyate vyomni rajjvevārko'nvahaṃ kila || 20 ||

English

By some divine knot tied in the heart, one is deluded by desire in the sky, like a rope mistaken for a snake.

हिन्दी

हृदय में किसी दैविक ग्रंथि से, तृष्णा से आकाश में भ्रमित होता है, जैसे रस्सी को साँप समझना।

सर्वदुःखमयाकारां जगतीजीवनच्छिदम्| तृष्णां परिहरेत्क्रूरामुरगीमिव दूरगः|| २१ ||

sarvaduḥkhamayākārāṃ jagatījīvanacchidam| tṛṣṇāṃ pariharetkrūrāmuragīmiva dūragaḥ|| 21 ||

English

One should abandon the cruel desire, which is the cause of all suffering and the destroyer of life, like a snake that sheds its skin.

हिन्दी

एक को उस क्रूर तृष्णा को त्याग देना चाहिए जो सभी दुःखों का कारण और जीवन का नाशक है, जैसे सांप अपनी केंचुल को छोड़ देता है।

तृष्णया वायवो वान्ति शैलास्तिष्ठन्ति तृष्णया| तृष्णयैव धरा धात्री त्रैलोक्यं तृष्णया धृतम्|| २२ ||

tṛṣṇayā vāyavo vānti śailāstiṣṭhanti tṛṣṇayā| tṛṣṇayaiva dharā dhātrī trailokyaṃ tṛṣṇayā dhṛtam|| 22 ||

English

By desire, the winds blow, the mountains stand firm, the earth is the sustainer, and the three worlds are supported by desire.

हिन्दी

तृष्णा से वायु चलती है, पहाड़ खड़े रहते हैं, पृथ्वी संरक्षक है, और तीनों लोक तृष्णा से धारण किए जाते हैं।

सर्वैव लोकयात्रेयं प्रोता तृष्णावरत्रया| रज्जुबन्धाद्विमुच्यन्ते तृष्णाबन्धान्न केचन|| २३ ||

sarvaiva lokayātreyaṃ protā tṛṣṇāvaratrayā| rajjubandhādvimucyante tṛṣṇābandhānna kecana|| 23 ||

English

All worldly journeys are bound by the rope of desire. People can be freed from the bondage of a rope, but no one can be freed from the bondage of desire.

हिन्दी

सभी संसारिक यात्राएं तृष्णा के रस्से से बंधी हुई हैं। लोग रस्से के बंधन से मुक्त हो सकते हैं, परन्तु कोई भी तृष्णा के बंधन से मुक्त नहीं हो सकता।

तस्माद्राघव तृष्णां त्वं त्यज संकल्पवर्जनात्| मनस्त्वकल्पनं नास्ति निर्णीतमिति युक्तितः|| २४ ||

tasmādrāghava tṛṣṇāṃ tvaṃ tyaja saṃkalpavarjanāt| manastvakalpanaṃ nāsti nirṇītamiti yuktitaḥ|| 24 ||

English

Therefore, O Raghava, abandon desire by renouncing all intentions. It is logically concluded that the mind has no conceptualization.

हिन्दी

इसलिए, हे रघुवंशी, तृष्णा को सभी संकल्पों को त्याग कर छोड़ दो। यह तर्कसंगत है कि मन किसी भी कल्पना को नहीं करता।

अयं त्वमहमित्येव प्रथमं तावदाशये| मां दुराशां महाबाहो संकल्पय तमोमयीम्|| २५ ||

ayaṃ tvamahamityeva prathamaṃ tāvadāśaye| māṃ durāśāṃ mahābāho saṃkalpaya tamomayīm|| 25 ||

English

First, understand that 'I am this' is the initial thought. O mighty-armed one, conceive of me as the dark hope.

हिन्दी

पहले, यह समझो कि 'मैं यह हूँ' पहला विचार है। हे महाबाहु, मुझे अंधेरी आशा के रूप में समझो।

एतां दुःखप्रसविनीमनात्मन्यात्मभावनाम् | न भावयसि चेद्राम तदा तज्ज्ञेषु गण्यसे || २६ ||

etāṃ duḥkhaprasavinīmanātmanyātmabhāvanām | na bhāvayasi cedrāma tadā tajjñeṣu gaṇyase || 26 ||

English

If you do not cultivate this sense of self-identification, which is the source of all suffering, then you will be considered wise among the wise, O Rama.

हिन्दी

यदि तुम इस दुःख की उत्पत्ति के आत्मभावना को नहीं करते हो, तो हे राम, तुम ज्ञानियों में ज्ञानी माने जाओगे।

एतामहंभावमयीमपुण्यां छित्त्वानहंभावशलाकयैव | स्वभावनां भव्य भवान्तभूमौ भवाभिभूताखिलभूतभीतिः || २७ ||

etāmahaṃbhāvamayīmapuṇyāṃ chittvānahaṃbhāvaśalākayaiva | svabhāvanāṃ bhavya bhavāntabhūmau bhavābhibhūtākhilabhūtabhītiḥ || 27 ||

English

Having cut off this ego-centric, impure sense of self with the arrow of non-ego, become established in your true nature, which is the ultimate reality, free from the fear of all beings.

इस अहंभावमयी, अपवित्र आत्मभावना को अहंभाव शलाका से काटकर, अपने स्वभाव में स्थित हो जाओ, जो परम वास्तविकता है, और सभी भूतों से भयमुक्त हो।
