श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । इति चिन्तयतस्तस्य शुक्रस्य पितुरग्रतः । जगामातितरां कालो बहुसंवत्सरात्मकः ॥ १ ॥
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | iti cintayatastasya śukrasya pituregrataḥ | jagāmātitaraṃ kālo bahusaṃvatsarātmakaḥ || 1 ||
Sri Vasishtha said, while Shukra was thinking like this, right in front of his father, a long time passed, as long as many years.
श्री वशिष्ठ बोले, जब शुक्र ऐसा सोच ही रहे थे, तब उनके पिता के सामने ही इतना समय बीत गया जितना कई सालों में बीतता है।
अथ कालेन महता पवनातपजर्जरः । कायस्तस्य पपातोर्व्यां छिन्नमूल इव द्रुमः ॥ २ ॥
atha kālena mahatā pavanātapajarjaraḥ | kāyastasya papātourvyāṃ chinnamūla iva drumaḥ || 2 ||
Then, after a long time, his body, worn out by wind and heat, fell to the ground, like a tree whose root has been cut.

But his mind, restless, kept moving through one strange condition after another, like a deer wandering through forest after forest.
पर उनका मन बेचैन होकर एक के बाद एक अजीब हालत में भटकता रहा, जैसे कोई हिरन जंगल दर जंगल भटकता है।
भ्रान्तमुद्भ्रान्तमभितश्चक्रार्पितमिवाकुलम् । मनस्तस्य विशश्राम समङ्गासरितस्तटे ॥ ४ ॥
bhrāntamudbhrāntamabhitaścakrārpitamivākulam | manastasya viśaśrāma samāṅgāsaritastataḥ || 4 ||
His mind, wandering, utterly wandering on every side, restless like something spinning on a wheel, came to rest on the bank of the river Samanga.

anantavṛttāntaghanāṃ pelavāṃ sudṛḍhāmapi | tāṃ saṃsṛtidśāṃ śukro videho'nubhavansthitaḥ || 5 ||
Shukra, now without a body, stayed there feeling that state of worldly life, which was thick with endless happenings, fragile, and yet also very solid.
शुक्र अब बिना शरीर के वहीं रहकर संसार की उस दशा को महसूस करते रहे, जो अनगिनत घटनाओं से भरी हुई, कमजोर भी थी और साथ ही बहुत मजबूत भी।
मन्दराचलसानुस्था सा तनुस्तस्य धीमतः । तापप्रसरसंशुष्का चर्मशेषा बभूव ह ॥ ६ ॥
mandarācalasānusthā sā tanustasya dhīmataḥ | tāpaprasarasaṃśuṣkā carmaśeṣā babhūva ha || 6 ||
That body of wise Shukra, lying on a ridge of Mount Mandara, dried up by the spreading heat, was left as nothing but skin.
बुद्धिमान शुक्र का वह शरीर, मंदराचल पर्वत की एक चोटी पर पड़ा हुआ, फैलती गर्मी से सूखकर सिर्फ चमड़ी भर रह गया।
शरीररन्ध्रप्रवहद्वातसीत्काररूपया । चेष्टा दुःखक्षयानन्दात्काकल्येव प्रगायति ॥ ७ ॥
śarīrarandhrapravahadvātasītkārarūpayā | ceṣṭā duḥkhakṣayānandātkākalyeva pragāyati || 7 ||
Through the whistling sound of wind passing through the holes in the body, it seemed to sing sweetly, as if happy that its suffering had ended.
शरीर के छेदों में से बहती हवा की सीटी जैसी आवाज से, वह मानो मीठा गा रहा था, जैसे उसका दुख खत्म होने की खुशी में हो।
मनोवराकमवटे लुठितं भवभूमिषु । हसतीवेति शुभ्राभ्रसितया दन्तमालया ॥ ८ ॥
manovarākamavaṭe luṭhitaṃ bhavabhūmiṣu | hasatīveti śubhrābhraśitayā dantamālayā || 8 ||
With its row of teeth white as a bright cloud, it seemed to be laughing at the poor mind that had rolled about in the pit, through the many grounds of worldly life.
अपने चमकते बादल जैसे सफेद दांतों की कतार से, वह मानो उस बेचारे मन पर हंस रहा था, जो संसार की जमीनों में गड्ढे में लोटता रहा था।
दर्शयन्ती जगच्छून्यं वपुरक्ष्णोरकृत्रिमम् । मुखारण्यजरत्कूपरूपया गर्तशोभया ॥ ९ ॥
darśayantī jagacchūnyaṃ vapurakṣṇorakṛtrimam | mukhāraṇyajaratkūparūpayā gartaśobhayā || 9 ||
With the hollow beauty of its eye sockets, like two old wells in the forest of its face, it showed the plain, true shape of empty eyes, showing that the world itself is empty.
अपनी आंखों के गड्ढों की उस सूनी सुंदरता से, जो चेहरे के जंगल में दो पुराने कुओं जैसी थी, वह आंखों का असली, सीधा रूप दिखा रहा था, यह दिखाते हुए कि यह दुनिया खुद खाली है।

चन्द्रानिलविलासेन लुलिता वनभूमिषु । धारानिकरपातेन विनुन्ना जलदागमे ॥ ११ ॥
candrānilavilāsena lulitā vanabhūmiṣu | dhārānikarapātena vinunnā jaladāgame || 11 ||
It was tossed about by the play of moonlight and breeze on the forest ground, and pushed around by heavy streams of rain when the rainy season's clouds came.
जंगल की जमीन पर चांदनी और हवा के खेल से वह हिलता डुलता रहा, और बरसात के बादल आने पर तेज बारिश की धाराओं से इधर उधर धकेला जाता रहा।
प्रावृण्निर्झररूपेण प्लुता गिरिनदीतटे । पांशुना पवनोत्थेन दुष्कृतेनेव रूषिता ॥ १२ ॥
prāvṛṇnirjhararūpeṇa plutā girinadītaṭe | pāṃśunā pavanotthena duṣkṛteneva rūṣitā || 12 ||
It was swept by the monsoon torrent at the bank of the mountain stream, and covered with dust raised by the wind, as if stained with a sin.
पहाड़ी नदी के किनारे बरसाती तेज धार से वह बह जाता, और हवा से उड़ी धूल से ऐसे ढक जाता जैसे किसी पाप के दाग से रंगा हो।
शुष्ककाष्ठवदालोला वातेषु कृतखाकृतिः । तारमारुतसीत्कारे वने तप इवास्थिता ॥ १३ ॥
śuṣkakāṣṭhavadālolā vāteṣu kṛtakhākṛtiḥ | tāramārutasītkāre vane tapa ivāsthitā || 13 ||
Swaying in the wind like a dry piece of wood, hollow in shape, amid the loud hiss of the wind in the forest, it seemed to sit still like someone doing penance.
सूखी लकड़ी की तरह हवा में हिलता, अंदर से खोखला, जंगल में हवा की तेज सीटी के बीच, वह मानो तप करने वाले किसी साधु की तरह चुपचाप बैठा हुआ लग रहा था।
वक्रा शुष्कान्त्रतन्त्री च भूतभाङ्कारकारिणी । अरण्यलक्ष्भीर्बाल्येव शून्या चर्ममयोदरी ॥ १४ ॥
vakrā śuṣkāntratantri ca bhūtabhāṅkārakāriṇī | araṇyalakṣbhīrbālyeva śūnyā carmamayodarī || 14 ||
Bent and crooked, with its dried intestines like the strings of an instrument, making a droning sound for the spirits, it looked like a young forest goddess, empty inside, its belly nothing but skin.
टेढ़ा मेढ़ा, उसकी सूखी आंतें किसी बाजे के तारों जैसी, भूत प्रेतों के लिए गूंजती आवाज निकालता, वह मानो जंगल की किसी छोटी बच्ची जैसी देवी लग रहा था, अंदर से खाली, जिसका पेट सिर्फ चमड़ी भर था।
रागद्वेषविहीनत्वात्तस्य पुण्याश्रमस्य तु । महातपस्त्वाच्च भृगोर्न भुक्ता मृगपक्षिभिः ॥ १५ ॥
rāgadveṣavihīnatvāttasya puṇyāśramasya tu | mahātapastvācca bhṛgor na bhunktā mṛgapakṣibhiḥ || 15 ||
But because that holy hermitage was free from liking and hating, and because of Bhrigu's great power of penance, the body was not eaten by animals or birds.
पर क्योंकि वह पवित्र आश्रम राग और द्वेष से मुक्त था, और भृगु के महान तप के कारण, उस शरीर को किसी जानवर या पक्षी ने नहीं खाया।
यमनियमकृशीकृताङ्गयष्टिश्चरति तपः स्म भृगूद्वहस्य चेतः। तनुरथ पवनापनीतरक्ता चिरमलुठन्महतीषु सा शिलासु ॥ १६ ॥
yamanīyamakṛśīkṛtāṅgayaṣṭiścarati tapaḥ sma bhṛgūdvahasya cetaḥ| tanuratha pavanāpanītaraktā ciramaluṭhanmahatīṣu sā śilāsu || 16 ||
The mind of Bhrigu's son, its body made thin by the rules of yama and niyama, kept practicing penance, and the body itself, its blood dried up by the wind, lay for a long time rolling on the great rocks.
भृगु के बेटे का मन, जिसका शरीर यम और नियम के पालन से दुबला हो गया था, तप करता रहा, और वह शरीर, जिसका खून हवा से सूख गया था, बड़ी बड़ी चट्टानों पर बहुत देर तक पड़ा लुढ़कता रहा।
