श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | अन्नपानाङ्गनासङ्गादृते नास्तीह किंचन | शुभमस्त्विति संवादि महान्किमिव वाञ्छतु || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | annapānāṅganāsaṅgādṛte nāstīha kiṃcana | śubhamastviti saṃvādi mahānkimiva vāñchatu || 1 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: Without the association of food, drink, and women, there is nothing auspicious in this world. What great thing does one desire by saying 'May it be auspicious'?

हिन्दी

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: भोजन, पेय और स्त्री के संग के बिना यहाँ कुछ भी शुभ नहीं है। 'शुभ हो' कहकर कोई किस बड़ी चीज की इच्छा करता है?

तिर्यञ्चः पशवो मूढा ये न तुष्यन्त्यसाधवः | भोगैः कृपणसर्वस्वैरादिमध्यान्तपेलवैः || २ ||

tiryañcaḥ paśavo mūḍhā ye na tuṣyantyasādhavaḥ | bhogaiḥ kṛpaṇasarvasvairādimadhyāntapelavaiḥ || 2 ||

English

Those foolish animals who are not satisfied with the pleasures, which are the pitiful possessions from beginning to end.

वे मूर्ख पशु जो आदि, मध्य और अंत में दयनीय संपत्ति से संतुष्ट नहीं होते।

विश्वासं यान्ति ये लोके तैरलं नरगर्दभैःइतः केशा इतो रक्तमितीयं प्रमदातनुः || ३ ||

viśvāsaṃ yānti ye loke tairalaṃ naragardabhaiḥitaḥ keśā ito raktamitīyaṃ pramadātanuḥ || 3 ||

English

Those who trust in the world are like donkeys. They are content with the hair from here and the blood from there, like the body of a woman.

जो दुनिया पर भरोसा करते हैं, वे गधों की तरह हैं। वे इधर से बाल और उधर से खून से संतुष्ट हैं, जैसे कि एक औरत का शरीर।

एतया तोषमायान्ति सारमेया न मानवाः | मृन्महीदारुतरवो देहा मांसमया अपि || ४ ||

etayā toṣamāyānti sārameyā na mānavāḥ | mṛnmahīdārutaravo dehā māṃsamayā api || 4 ||

English

Dogs are satisfied with this, but not humans. Bodies are made of clay, earth, wood, and even flesh.

कुत्ते इससे संतुष्ट होते हैं, लेकिन मनुष्य नहीं। शरीर मिट्टी, धरती, लकड़ी और मांस से बने होते हैं।

अधो भूरम्बरं पृष्ठे किमपूर्वं सुखाय तुमात्रास्पर्शानुसारिण्यो विवेकपदभङ्गुराः || ५ ||

adho bhūrambaraṃ pṛṣṭhe kimapūrvaṃ sukhāya tumātrāsparśānusāriṇyo vivekapadabhaṅgurāḥ || 5 ||

English

Below the earth, what is the unprecedented pleasure for you? You are followers of touch, fragile in the path of discrimination.

पृथ्वी के नीचे, आपके लिए अनुपम सुख क्या है? आप स्पर्श के अनुयायी हैं, विवेक के मार्ग में दुर्बल।

मोहायैवापरामृष्टाः सकला लोकसंविदःसर्वस्या एव पर्यन्ते सुखाशायाश्च संस्थितम् || ६ ||

mohāyaivāparāmṛṣṭāḥ sakalā lokasaṃvidaḥsarvasyā eva paryante sukhāśāyāśca saṃsthitam || 6 ||

English

All worldly knowledge is tainted by delusion, and all desires for happiness are ultimately rooted in this delusion.

हिन्दी

सारी दुनिया की जानकारी मोह से दूषित है, और सभी सुख की इच्छाएं अंततः इसी मोह में जड़ें जमाती हैं।

मालिन्यं दुःखमप्येवं ज्वालाया इव कज्जलमागमापायिनोऽनित्या मनःषष्ठेन्द्रियक्रियाः || ७ ||

mālinyaṃ duḥkhamapyevaṃ jvālāyā iva kajjalamāgamāpāyino'nityā manaḥṣaṣṭhendriyakriyāḥ || 7 ||

English

Just as soot is an impurity of the flame, sorrow is an impurity of the mind. The activities of the mind and senses are transient and come and go.

जैसे काजल ज्वाला का दोष है, वैसे ही दुःख मन का दोष है। मन और इंद्रियों की गतिविधियां अस्थायी हैं और आती-जाती रहती हैं।

लता नागेन्द्रमृदिता धारयन्ति न सम्पदःपुत्रिका रक्तमांसस्य कान्तेयमिति सादरम् || ८ ||

latā nāgendramṛditā dhārayanti na saṃpadaḥputrikā raktamāṃsasya kānteyamiti sādaram || 8 ||

English

Just as a creeper embraces a tree that has been crushed by an elephant, so too does a daughter embrace her father's body with affection.

जैसे एक लता एक हाथी द्वारा कुचले गए पेड़ को आलिंगन करती है, वैसे ही एक बेटी अपने पिता के शरीर को प्यार से आलिंगन करती है।

स्वदेहनाम्नास्थिचये श्लिष्यते मोहकक्रमःसर्वं सत्यमिदं राम स्थिरमज्ञस्य तुष्टये || ९ ||

svadehanāmnā'sthicaye śliṣyate mohakakramaḥsarvaṃ satyamidaṃ rāma sthiramajñasya tuṣṭaye || 9 ||

English

Delusion clings to the body as if it were the self. All this is true, O Rama, for the satisfaction of the ignorant.

मोह शरीर को आत्मा के रूप में पकड़ता है। यह सब सच है, हे राम, अज्ञानी की संतुष्टि के लिए।

ज्ञस्यास्थैर्यमसत्यं च जगद्राम न तुष्टयेअभुक्तेऽपि विषा यैषा विषमूर्च्छां प्रयच्छति || १० ||

jñasyāsthairyamasatyaṃ ca jagadrāma na tuṣṭayeabhukte'pi viṣā yaiṣā viṣamūrcchāṃ prayacchati || 10 ||

English

The instability and falsity of the world do not satisfy the wise, O Rama. Even if not consumed, this poison causes delirium.

हिन्दी

दुनिया की अस्थिरता और असत्यता बुद्धिमान को संतुष्ट नहीं करती, हे राम। यह जहर चाहे खाया न हो, फिर भी मूर्च्छा पैदा करता है।

तां परित्यज्य भोगास्थां स्वात्मैकत्वगतिं भज | अनात्ममयभावेन चित्तं स्थितिमुपागतम् | यदा तदैतदाजातं जगज्जालमसन्मयम् || ११ ||

tāṃ parityajya bhogāsthāṃ svātmaikatvagatiṃ bhaja | anātmamayabhāvena cittaṃ sthitimupāgatam | yadā tadaitetadājātaṃ jagajjālamasanmayam || 11 ||

English

Abandon the state of enjoyment and adopt the path of self-realization. When the mind attains stability through the understanding of the non-self, then this worldly illusion is born.

हिन्दी

भोग की स्थिति को छोड़कर आत्मैकत्व की गति को अपनाएं | जब मन अनात्म के भाव से स्थिर हो जाता है, तब यह जगत् का जाल असत्य के रूप में उत्पन्न होता है।

वासनावशतो ब्रह्ममनसा कल्पितं वपुः | तेजसा श्रितकुड्येन हेमाभत्वमिवात्मनः || १२ ||

vāsanāvaśato brahmanmanasā kalpitaṃ vapuḥ | tejasā śritakuḍyena hemābhatvamivātmanaḥ || 12 ||

English

Due to the influence of desires, the mind imagines the form of Brahman. Just as a wall covered with lime appears to be made of gold, so does the self appear to be something it is not.

हिन्दी

वासनाओं के प्रभाव से, मन ब्रह्म का रूप कल्पना करता है। जैसे चूने से लिपी दीवार सोने की तरह दिखती है, वैसे ही आत्मा को भी ऐसा ही दिखाई देता है।

श्रीराम उवाच | वैरिञ्चपदमासाद्य मनो ब्रह्मन्महामते | इदं जगत्सुघनतां कथमानयति क्रमात् || १३ ||

śrīrāma uvāca | vairiñcapadamāsādya mano brahmanmahāmate | idaṃ jagatsughanatāṃ kathamānayati kramaāt || 13 ||

English

Sri Rama said: O great-minded Brahman, having attained the position of Brahma, how does the mind bring this dense world into existence step by step?

हिन्दी

श्री राम ने कहा: हे महामनस्वी ब्रह्मन्, ब्रह्मा की स्थिति को प्राप्त करके, मन किस तरह क्रमशः इस घने जगत् को अस्तित्व में लाता है?

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | गर्भतल्पात्समुत्थाय पद्मजः प्रथमः शिशुः | ब्रह्मेति शब्दमकरोद्ब्रह्मा तेन स उच्यते || १४ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | garbhatalpātsamutthāya padmajaḥ prathamaḥ śiśuḥ | brahmeti śabdamakarodbrahmā tena sa ucyate || 14 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: The first child, born from the lotus, arose from the womb and made the sound 'Brahma'. Therefore, he is called Brahma.

हिन्दी

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: कमल से उत्पन्न पहला बच्चा गर्भ से उठा और 'ब्रह्मा' शब्द बोला। इसलिए उसे ब्रह्मा कहा जाता है।

संकल्पजालरूपस्य मनसा कल्पिताकृतेः | अकरोत्तस्य संकल्पलक्ष्मीः पदमथोत्तरे || १५ ||

saṃkalpajālarūpasya manasā kalpitākṛteḥ | akarottasya saṃkalpalakṣmīḥ padamathottare || 15 ||

English

The mind, which is the form of the web of thoughts, imagined the form. The splendor of that imagination created the subsequent state.

हिन्दी

मन, जो विचारों के जाल का रूप है, ने रूप की कल्पना की। उस कल्पना की शोभा ने परिणामस्वरूप स्थिति को बनाया।

ततः संकल्पयामास पूर्वं तेजो महाप्रभम् | शरदन्ते लताचक्रचक्रीकृतदिगन्तरम् || १६ ||

tataḥ saṃkalpayāmāsa pūrvaṃ tejo mahāprabham | śaradante latācakracakrīkṛtadigantaram || 16 ||

English

Then, he resolved to create a great radiant light, which was like a circle of vines covering the directions at the end of autumn.

तब, उसने एक महान तेजस्वी प्रकाश का संकल्प किया, जो शरद ऋतु के अंत में लताओं के चक्र के समान सभी दिशाओं को ढकता था।

पक्षप्रतिमनिस्यूतकर्मणातिगुणाक्षरम् | पुञ्जपिञ्जरपर्यन्तं हेमज्ञाननिभाम्बरम् || १७ ||

pakṣapratimanisūtakarmaṇātiguṇākṣaram | puñjapiñjaraparyantaṃ hemajñānanibhāmbaram || 17 ||

English

With the excellent work of the wings, it is adorned with the best qualities, extending from the cluster to the cage, resembling golden knowledge.

jālahema latājāla jaṭāla nija mandiram | kacatprasara dudyānākāra kuṇḍala maṇḍitam || 18 ||

English

The abode is adorned with a network of golden vines, resembling a garden with spreading branches, decorated with earrings.

यह निवास सोने की लताओं के जाल से सुशोभित है, जो फैली हुई शाखाओं वाले उद्यान के समान है, कुण्डलों से सजा हुआ है।

तं शरीरं मनस्तस्मिंस्ततस्तेजसि भास्वरे | आत्माकारसमाकारं भास्वरं समकल्पयत् || १९ ||

taṃ śarīraṃ manastasmiṃstataḥ tejasi bhāsvare | ātmākārasamākāraṃ bhāsvaraṃ samakalpayat || 19 ||

English

Then, in that radiant light, he imagined the body in the form of the self, brilliant and resplendent.

स ततस्तेजसस्तस्मादभ्युदेति दिवाकरः | जालमण्डलमध्यस्थो ज्वलत्कनककुण्डलः || २० ||

sa tataḥ tejasastasmādabhyudeti divākaraḥ | jālamaṇḍalamadhyastho jvalatkanakakuṇḍalaḥ || 20 ||

English

Then, from that radiant light, the sun rises, situated in the middle of the network of circles, with shining golden earrings.

jvalajjaṭābhāradharopāntavisphārapāvakaḥ | jvālāviśālāvayavaḥ pūritākāśamaṇḍalaḥ || 21 ||

English

The one who bears the blazing mass of matted hair, with flames spreading at the end, with vast limbs of flames, filling the sky.

जो ज्वलन्त जटाओं का भार धारण करता है, जिसके अन्त में ज्वालाएँ फैली हुई हैं, जिसके अंग विशाल हैं और जो आकाश को भर देता है।

अथ ब्रह्मा महाबुद्धिरन्यास्तास्तेजसः कलाः | अपाल्य यदसद्ब्रह्मा तरङ्गानिव सागरः || २२ ||

atha brahmā mahābuddhiranyāstāstejasaḥ kalāḥ | apālya yadasadbrahmā taraṅgāniva sāgaraḥ || 22 ||

English

Then Brahma, the greatly wise, having placed the parts of his splendor, protected them like the ocean protects its waves.

हिन्दी

तदनन्तर महाबुद्धिमान ब्रह्मा ने अपने तेज की कलाएँ रखीं और उन्हें समुद्र की तरह तरंगों की रक्षा की।

तेऽपि संकल्पसंप्राप्तसिद्धयः समशक्तयः | यथासंकल्पितं वस्तु क्षणाद्दृष्ट्वापुरग्रतः || २३ ||

teapi saṃkalpasamprāptasiddhayaḥ samśaktayaḥ | yathāsaṃkalpitam vastu kṣaṇāddṛṣṭvāpuragratḥ || 23 ||

English

Those who have attained perfection through their resolve and are equally powerful, saw the object as they had resolved, in an instant, before them.

हिन्दी

जो अपने संकल्प से सिद्धि प्राप्त कर चुके थे और समान रूप से शक्तिशाली थे, उन्होंने जैसा संकल्प किया था वैसा ही वस्तु एक क्षण में अपने सामने देखा।

संकल्पयन्तो यान्यांस्ते नानाभूतगणान्बहून् | भूतेष्वन्यांस्तु तेष्वन्यांस्तेष्वन्यान्विविधानपि || २४ ||

saṃkalpayanto yānyāṃste nānābhūtagaṇānbahūn | bhūteṣvanyāṃstu teṣvanyāṃsteṣvanyānvividhānapi || 24 ||

English

Resolving various beings, they created many different kinds of beings within beings, and even more diverse ones within those.

हिन्दी

संकल्प करते हुए, वे बहुत से अलग-अलग प्रकार के भूतगणों को उत्पन्न करते हैं, और उन भूतों में और भी अलग-अलग प्रकार के भूत उत्पन्न करते हैं।

संस्मृत्य वेदांस्तदनु यज्ञक्रमगुणान्बहून् | जगद्ग्रहादयं ब्रह्मा मर्यादां समकल्पयत् || २५ ||

saṃsmṛtya vedāṃstadanu yajñakramaguṇānbahūn | jagadgrahādayaṃ brahmā maryādāṃ samakalpayat || 25 ||

English

Remembering the Vedas and then the many qualities of the sacrificial order, Brahma conceived the boundaries of the universe.

वेदों को स्मरण करके और फिर यज्ञ क्रम के बहुत से गुणों को स्मरण करके, ब्रह्मा ने ब्रह्माण्ड की सीमाओं का संकल्प किया।

ब्राह्मं रूपमुपादाय मनोनाम महद्वपुः | तनोतीत्थमिमां दृष्टिं भूतसंततिसंकुलाम् || २६ ||

brāhmaṃ rūpamupādāya manonāma mahadvapuḥ | tanotītthamimāṃ dṛṣṭiṃ bhūtasaṃtatisaṃkulām || 26 ||

English

Assuming the form of Brahman, the great being named Manu creates this vision filled with the continuity of beings.

ब्रह्म का रूप धारण करके, मनु नामक महान प्राणी इस भूतों की संतति से भरी दृष्टि को रचता है।

समुद्राचलवृक्षाढ्यां कृतलोकोत्तरक्रमाम् | मेरुभूपीठदिक्कुञ्जजटालोदरमण्डलाम् || २७ ||

samudrācalavṛkṣāḍhyāṃ kṛtalokottarakramām | merubhūpīṭhadikkun̄jajaṭālodaramaṇḍalām || 27 ||

English

This vision is adorned with oceans, mountains, and trees, arranged in an orderly manner, with Meru as the central seat, surrounded by directions, caves, and the universe.

हिन्दी

यह दृष्टि समुद्रों, पर्वतों और वृक्षों से सुशोभित है, जो क्रमबद्ध ढंग से व्यवस्थित हैं, मेरु को केंद्रीय आसन के रूप में, दिशाओं, गुफाओं और ब्रह्मांड से घिरा हुआ।

सुखदुःखजराजन्ममरणस्वाधिबोधिताम् | रागद्वेषमयोद्विग्नां गुणत्रयमयात्मिकाम् || २८ ||

sukhaduḥkhajarājanmamarṇasvādhibodhitām | rāgadveṣamayodvignāṃ guṇatrayamayātmikām || 28 ||

English

This vision is characterized by happiness, sorrow, old age, birth, death, and self-awareness, agitated by attachment and aversion, and composed of the three gunas.

हिन्दी

यह दृष्टि सुख, दुःख, वृद्धावस्था, जन्म, मृत्यु और स्व-चेतना से चिह्नित है, आसक्ति और घृणा से उद्विग्न, और तीन गुणों से बनी हुई है।

मनोहस्तैर्विरिंचोत्थैर्यद्यथा कल्पितं पुरा | तत्तथैवाखिलं द्रष्टुं दृश्यतेऽद्यापि मायया || २९ ||

manohastairvirin̄cotthairyadyathā kalpitaṃ purā | tattathaivākhilaṃ draṣṭuṃ dṛśyate'dyāpi māyayā || 29 ||

English

Whatever was imagined by the hands of Manu in the past, all that is seen even today by the power of illusion.

जो कुछ भी पूर्व में मनु के हाथों द्वारा कल्पित किया गया था, वह आज भी माया की शक्ति से देखा जाता है।

इत्थं सर्वेषु भूतेषु केषुचित्त्वथवा पुनः | संकल्पयति संसारं परं पश्यति चित्स्थितम् || ३० ||

itthaṃ sarveṣu bhūteṣu keṣucittvathavā punaḥ | saṃkalpayati saṃsāraṃ paraṃ paśyati citsthitam || 30 ||

English

Thus, in all beings, or in some, again and again, one imagines the world and sees the supreme reality established in consciousness.

इस प्रकार, सभी प्राणियों में, या कुछ में, फिर से, एक संसार की कल्पना करता है और चेतना में स्थापित परम वास्तविकता को देखता है।

मोह एवंमयो मिथ्या जागतः स्थिरतां गतः | संकल्पनेन मनसा कल्पितोऽचिरतः स्वयम् || ३१ ||

moha evaṃmayo mithyā jāgataḥ sthiratāṃ gataḥ | saṃkalpanena manasā kalpito'cirataḥ svayam || 31 ||

English

Delusion, which is the cause of the world, has become stable, falsely imagined by the mind through its own resolutions.

मोह, जो जगत का कारण है, मन के संकल्पों द्वारा स्वयं ही कल्पित होकर स्थिर हो गया है।

संकल्पवशतः सर्वाः प्रसवन्ति जगत्क्रियाः | संकल्पवशतो देवा निर्यान्ति नियतिस्थिताः || ३२ ||

saṃkalpavaśataḥ sarvāḥ prasavanti jagatkriyāḥ | saṃkalpavaśato devā niryānti niyatisthitāḥ || 32 ||

English

All worldly activities arise from the power of resolutions. The gods, who are established in destiny, emerge from the power of resolutions.

सभी जगत की क्रियाएँ संकल्पों की शक्ति से उत्पन्न होती हैं। देवताएँ, जो नियति में स्थित हैं, संकल्पों की शक्ति से उत्पन्न होती हैं।

कोपितायाः प्रजानाथैर्जगत्सृष्टेः कुलोद्भवः | ब्रह्मा संचिन्तयत्येष पद्मासनगतः प्रभुः || ३३ ||

kopitāyāḥ prajānāthairjagatsṛṣṭeḥ kulodbhavaḥ | brahmā saṃcintayatyēṣa padmāsanagataḥ prabhuḥ || 33 ||

English

Brahma, the lord seated on the lotus, ponders over the creation of the world, which is the origin of the family of the enraged lords of the people.

ब्रह्मा, जो कमल पर विराजमान हैं, उन क्रोधित प्रजानाथों के कुलोद्भव जगत् सृष्टि पर विचार करते हैं।

मनःस्पन्दनमात्रेण चित्रं चित्तं यदुत्थितम् | सृष्टिर्वा भोगिनी स्फारा व्यवहारविकारिणी || ३४ ||

manaḥspandanamātreṇa citraṃ cittaṃ yadutthitam | sṛṣṭirvā bhoginī sphārā vyavahāravikāriṇī || 34 ||

English

The mind, which is marvelous, arises from the mere vibration of the mind. Creation is indeed the enjoyer, expansive, and transformative in worldly affairs.

रुद्रोपेन्द्रमहेन्द्राद्या शैलसागरसंकुला | पातालरोदोदिक्स्वर्गमार्गसंकटकोटरा || ३५ ||

rudropendramahēndrādyā śailasāgarasaṅkulā | pātālarododiksvargamārgasaṅkaṭakoṭarā || 35 ||

English

Rudra, Indra, Mahendra, and others, along with mountains and oceans, are filled with the path to heaven, which is difficult and narrow.

This entire network of resolutions is completely pervaded by me. Now, I am free from the sequence of imaginative projections.

इति निश्चित्य विरतः कल्पनानर्थसंकटात् | अनादिमत्परं ब्रह्म स्मरत्यात्मानमात्मना || ३७ ||

iti niścitya virataḥ kalpanānarthasaṃkaṭāt | anādimatparaṃ brahma smaratyātmānamātmanā || 37 ||

English

Having thus determined, free from the distress of useless imaginings, one remembers the supreme Brahman, which is beginningless, with the self by the self.

tamāsādya tadābhāse pade galitamānase | sukhaṃ tiṣṭhati śāntātmā talpe'dhaḥ śramavāniva || 38 ||

English

Having attained that, in the state of reflection, with the mind dissolved, the peaceful self rests happily, as if on a bed below, free from exertion.

Free from possessiveness and ego, having attained supreme peace, one remains steadfast like the unperturbed ocean, with the self in the self.

These scriptures are filled with spiritual knowledge, a compilation of the Vedas and Vedangas, and other ancient texts like the Puranas, for the liberation of all beings.

English

Having observed the activities of the world and having established the boundaries, Brahma, seated on the lotus, returns to his own self.

English

The one who undertakes all states equally in all activities, full like an ocean, remains free from the remnants.

English

In the highest sky, where the mind's fruit of Brahman arises, that itself first attains Brahmanhood.

English

When creation attains stability, another entity arises, focused on imagination. It enters the herbs and leaves, relying on the wind and sky.

Some attain the state of gods, some attain the state of Yakshas. That which arises first attains Brahmanhood.

yā yatsattvaṃ samanveti sā tadevāśu jāyate | jātā saṃsargavaśatastasminneva ca janmani | badhyate mucyate vāsau svayamanvārabhedataḥ || 54 ||

English

Whatever being a being attains, it quickly becomes that. Born due to association, it is bound or liberated in that very birth according to its own initiation.

itthaṃ gatāsthitiriyam kila rāmabhadra sṛṣṭiḥ sphuṭaprakaṭasaṅkaṭakarmalabdhā | āvirbhavedvividhavegavihārabhārasaṃrambhagarbhavidhṛtā kalanāpade sā || 55 ||

English

Thus, O Rama, this creation, which has attained a stable state, is clearly manifested through various actions. It appears with diverse movements and activities, filled with the burden of various impulses.
