This world is like an old, worn-out well-wheel. It keeps turning by its own working, on the rope of the thirst for life, carrying pots that are the living and the dead.
brahmottheṣu ca bhūteṣu viśatsu bhavapañjaramāvarteṣvīśvaravyomavālamadhyavivartiṣu || 3 ||
Among the beings born from Brahma, entering the cage of worldly life, caught in its whirling eddies, they go round and round inside a single strand of hair in the Lord's sky.
Rama, streams of living souls rise up in Brahman the way waves rise up in the ocean. They are born from a state that has no beginning and no end, and they come into a state of change and motion.
They enter the space of living beings the way a mass of smoke enters a cloud. The streams of souls become one in Brahman, together with the sky and the winds.
tato jagati jāyante bhavanti prāṇino'sphuṭāḥ| anyā dhūmādimājātā rāma jīvaparamparā || 9 ||
Then, in the world, living creatures are born, faint and unclear at first, Rama, and there is another line of souls that forms gradually, the way smoke gathers together.
The hollow of the sky is never empty; it stays filled with just these fine elements, and this goes on until the great moon rises with its full, unrestrained disc.
Then, landing on those lovely moonbeams, a restless bird flits about in the forest as if running between errands; and through those same rays, by their own sap alone, the fruits too grow plump.
The seed's hidden power sits over this cage of life, wrapped in a net of sleeping impressions, the way a whole banyan tree with its sleeping leaves lies folded inside its seed.
One who carries the promise of another body not yet seen, and moves forward without forcing it, is truly the well-born one, of noble and generous conduct.
tenaiva mokṣabhāgī cejjjanmanā sa tu sāttvikaḥ | athaietāṃ yonimāsādya kṛtyāṃ janmaparamparām || 18 ||
If, through that very birth, he becomes fit for freedom, then he is a person of pure nature. Now, having reached this origin, there remains a line of births still to be completed.
rakṣārthaṃ prāptajanmā cet tamo rājasasāttvikaḥ | pāścātyajanmanā puṃso rāma vakṣyāmi cādhunā || 19 ||
If someone is born for the sake of protection, he may be dull, passionate, or pure by nature. Now, Rama, I will tell you about the births that come after, for such a person.
In this world, Rama, men are born who are a mix of the passionate and the pure. They come here after real thought, and this too should be understood here with that same understanding.
And the rest, of many kinds, the confused, the silent, those born of dullness, are just like unmoving things such as plants and stones. What is there to even discuss about them, Rama?
Only a few men and gods have not accepted the ordinary notion of worldly life. In the natural course of birth, does not simply having the fitness for reflection make a person the passionate-and-pure kind?
