Rama said, Brahmin, what you have told me is true, and it is beautiful in its words. The self that acts is truly a non-actor. The maker of beings enjoys, yet truly does not enjoy.
He is the lord of all and reaches everywhere. He is the pure state of consciousness alone. This god is the ground and the body here on earth, and he stands inside every being.
hadayaṃgamatāṃ prāptamidānīṃ brahma me vibho | tvaduktibhiryathāmbhodadhārābhirbhūbhṛdavyathaḥ || 3 ||
Mighty one, because of your words the truth of brahman has now reached my heart, the way a mountain stays unshaken under streams of rain from the clouds.
audāsīnyādanicchatvānna bhuṅkte na karoti ca | samagrālokakāritvādbhuṅkte devaḥ karoti ca || 4 ||
Out of indifference and freedom from wanting, he neither enjoys nor acts. Yet because he lights up everything and makes all things seen, this god enjoys and acts.
Vasishtha said, Rama, I will give you the lasting answer to this question only when the time for final teaching comes, so that you will know it as it truly is.
Rama, just as a young man is the right listener for songs of love sung by a woman he adores, so a person of pure deeds is the right listener for the best answers to these questions.
Teaching words take hold in a mature person the way dye takes to clean cloth, and this great teaching of true knowledge takes hold in one who has already grasped the self.
But, good man, once you have reached real understanding and the time for final teaching comes, I will lay out the whole sequence of questions and answers in full.
Rama, this is what I have explained, the inquiry into the doer and the non-doer. But without knowing this, a person's old habits and desires stay alive, undiminished.
To be bound is simply to be bound by desires and habits. Freedom is nothing but the ending of those desires. So give up your desires, and give up even your wish for freedom.
Then let go of even that pure state inwardly, though you may still act with kindness and the rest outwardly. With all your inner striving now stilled, become someone whose only desire is pure awareness itself.
cinmayaḥ kalanākālaprakāśatimirādikam | vāsanāṃ vāsitāraṃ ca prāṇaspandanapūrvakam || 23 ||
You, whose nature is pure consciousness, give up the ideas of time, of light and darkness, and the rest. Give up desire and the one who desires, together with the very stirring of the breath.
Give up all this, down to the very root, and let your mind grow as calm and gentle as the sky. Whatever you then become, truly wise one, let that be your real, accomplished self.
Whether such a person practices meditation or does deeds, or does not, it makes no difference. One whose heart has dropped every attachment to all of this is truly free, a person of the highest mind.
naiṣkarmyeṇa na tasyārtho na tasyārtho'sti karmabhiḥ | na samādhānajapyābhyāṃ yasya nirvāsanaṃ manaḥ || 27 ||
For someone whose mind is free of all craving, there is no need to avoid action, and no need to do it either. There is no need for fixed concentration or for chanting prayers.
However much the scriptures are studied deeply and taught to one another for a long time, there is no highest state except through the silence that comes from giving up all desire.
Whatever a person sees as some real thing, that thing does not actually exist. Except for chasing what they want and avoiding what they do not want, people make no other effort.
ye kecana samārambhā ye janasya kriyākramaḥ | te sarve dehamātrārthamātmārtham natu kiṃcana || 31 ||
Whatever a person begins, whatever actions a person carries out, all of it is only for the body's sake, not even a little for the sake of the true self.
ye mahāmatayaḥ santaḥ śūrāścendriyaśatruṣu | janmajvaravināśāya ta upāsyā mahādhiyaḥ || 35 ||
Great and good people who are brave against the enemy that is the senses, those great minds should be honoured, because they destroy the fever of birth.
Everywhere there are only the five elements, there is no sixth thing anywhere. So in the underworld, on earth, or in heaven, where can a calm, wise mind find any delight?
yuktyā vai carato jñasya saṃsāro goṣpadākṛtiḥ| dūrasaṃtyaktyayuktes tu mahāmattārṇavopamaḥ || 37 ||
To the knower who lives by right understanding, this world is no bigger than a puddle in a cow's hoof print. But to one who has thrown that right understanding far away, this same world looks like a vast, wild ocean.
To one whose mind has grown vast, the whole universe is no bigger than a little ball of kadamba flowers. Even if he gained this whole universe, what would he give away, what would he enjoy?
For the sake of this tiny thing, fools wage their great wars. I think, Rama, that such action deserves only shame, since it destroys hundreds of thousands of people in mutual conflict.
kalpamātreṇa kālena sumahāpelavodare| tasminnapi hi yo nāśaḥ sarvādhiramahādhiyām || 40 ||
Within just one age of time, this whole universe, vast yet so delicate at its core, is itself destroyed. This very fact is the deepest grief for great minds.
Since the very beginning of creation, the true self of the knower has not grown even a little. So even if he gained all three worlds, how would his conscious self become any greater?
This earth is covered with hundreds of mountains on one side, and with oceans of water on the other. Yet how big, really, is this earth's body, that winning it could satisfy a great soul?
In this whole world, including the underworld and the home of the gods, there is nothing that could ever be real work for the knower who has found the true self.
The knower has reached perfect oneness, he has spread out like the sky. He rests in his own true nature, he has found the self, and he stays fixed in the self, beyond all thought.
To him, the three worlds are like one huge slope, gray with the mist of countless bodies, full of empty hollows, yet made beautiful by a world now at peace.
All the great mountain ranges are just foam on the vast, pure ocean of Brahman. Under the great light of the sun of consciousness, everything shines like the water of a mirage.
All the rows of creation are only waves on the great ocean of the self's true nature. All the teachings of the scriptures are only rain falling from the cloud of that highest state.
The light of the moon, of fire, and of the sun are no different from ordinary things like a pot or a piece of wood. And everything they light up is, next to the light of pure consciousness, no more than a speck of dust.
Their bodies have broken bones for bolts and a skull for a lid, sinews for chains, they are boxes of the world, holding the old blood and flesh of living beings.
naivaṃvidhodāramanā manāgapi mahāmatiḥ | na jñścalati bhogaudhairmandavātairivācalaḥ || 52 ||
But the great mind, so open and generous, is nothing like this. The knower is not shaken even a little by floods of pleasure, just as a mountain is not shaken by a gentle breeze.
By his light, even the guardians of the world see truly and gain real knowledge. But foolish people, thinking the body alone is the self, protect only the body, and go on looking out from within an ocean of darkness.
None of the things of this world can move the knower of truth, even if they come again and again out of habit, just as clouds cannot stain the vast, open sky.
na kecana jagadbhāvāstattvajñaṃ rañjayantyamī | markaṭā iva nṛtyanto gaurīlāsyārthinaṃ haram || 56 ||
None of the things of this world can move the knower of truth, just as monkeys dancing about cannot move Hara, who is absorbed in watching Gauri's dance.
Seeing the world as just an image formed by a wave, rising and cresting like a splash of water, seeming as fixed as a diamond though it is not real, the one who knows this truth does not run after the fickle pleasures it offers, just as a royal swan does not delight in bits of grass and moss floating on the water.
