Sri Vasishtha said, once you decide for certain that this world does not exist, give up every kind of liking for it. What concern can a person who really thinks about it have with something that does not exist?
But if this world that you see does exist, if it truly has being, then still stay firmly in your own self. Why do you tie your sense of self to it here?
Or if you are completely certain that this world does not exist, then how does it make sense to keep your mind attached to this world, where some things move and some stand still?
Rama, this world does not exist, it does not exist for you either, wise one. There is only something clear and pure, which simply appears spread out like this, only seeming to have this shape and size.
This world was not made by any maker, and it is not a chain of actions made by a maker either. It appears on its own, so it stands in a place where made by someone and made by no one both fit it.
sarvendriyavihīnātmā karteva sa jaḍopamaḥ | akartṛ ca tadā manye kākatālīyavajjagat || 7 ||
A self with no senses at all, even if it were called a doer, would be no different from lifeless matter. So I think this world has no real doer, it comes about like a crow landing on a branch just when a fruit happens to fall, a pure coincidence.
na kadācididaṃ śāntaṃ jagadrāma na ca kṣayi | ajasraṃ dṛśyamānatvādbhāvitvācca punaḥpunaḥ || 9 ||
Rama, this world never comes to rest, and it never truly ends either, because it keeps on being seen without a break, and it keeps on arising again and again.
na kadācididaṃ cāsti jagadrāma na ca kṣayi | ajasraṃ kṣīyamāṇatvānnāstitvāccānumānataḥ || 10 ||
And Rama, this world never truly exists at all, and so it does not truly end either, because it keeps on perishing without a break, and because reasoning shows it was never there to begin with.
When the one who acts here stands beyond the reach of all the senses and is free of any inner turmoil, then even though he keeps on acting all the time, he never falls into sorrow.
So this order that governs everything is strong and firmly settled, it is made of both being and not being, and it looks exactly like this, steady and long lasting, even though it has risen out of falsehood.
sthirāścejjagatāṃ bhāvāstattvādāsthā na śobhate| kathamanyonyasaṃśleṣo jaḍacetanayoḥ kila || 14 ||
If the things of this world were truly permanent, holding on to them still would not fit with the truth. And how can lifeless matter and a conscious being ever truly join together anyway?
And if the things of this world are not lasting at all, then holding on to them is even less fitting. This attachment, to something as unstable as foam on water, will only give you sorrow in the end.
Strong armed one, tying your sense of self to the world, treating your self as if it were the world, does not look right either way, whether the world is stable or unstable, any more than foam looks like a mountain.
sarvakartāpyakarteva karotyātmā na kiṃcana | tiṣṭhatyevamudāsīna ālokaṃ prati dīpavat || 17 ||
The self does everything, yet it acts as if it does nothing, like one who is not the doer at all. It stays detached just like this, the way a lamp simply gives light without caring what that light falls on.
kurvann na kiṃcitkurute divākāryamivāṃśumān | gacchann na gacchati svasthaḥ svāspadastho raviryathā || 18 ||
Acting, it does nothing, the way the sun does its day's work without effort. Moving, it does not move, it stays settled in its own place, the way the sun stays fixed where it is.
This world only seems to have come from one place or another, spreading out like water at the bank of the Aruna, like a whirlpool spreading in a flood.
tathāpi bhāvanāṃ sādho padārthaṃ prati nārhasi | alātacakre svapne ca bhrame vā keva bhāvanā || 21 ||
even so, good man, you should not hold real belief toward any object. In a circle of fire made by a whirled firebrand, in a dream, or in an illusion, what belief can there be?
A creature that appears suddenly, for no real reason, is not something to feel true affection for. And this whole tangled world, born out of illusion, is not something to place your trust in either.
Just as you do not believe there is heat in the cool moon, or coolness in the hot sun, or real water in a mirage, hold that same disbelief about this world being fixed and lasting.
Just as a person who exists only in someone's imagination might, in his own dream, see two moons where there is only one, see this whole world of things in exactly the same way.
Let go of the inner attachment that is just the imagining of the glory of things. Whatever you are, you are that. Play freely in this world, sinless one.
The self has fully taken in the state of not doing anything, yet it still carries out desire. It lives inside every state of being, and it is also beyond all of them.
sarvecchārahite bhānau yathā vyomani tiṣṭhati| jāyate vyavahāraśca sati deve tathā kriyā || 29 ||
Just as the sun, wanting nothing, simply stays in the sky, and the business of the world goes on, so too, when the self merely exists, action takes place.
niricche saṃsthite ratne yathālokaḥ pravartate| sattāmātreṇa deve tu tathaivāyaṃ jagadgaṇaḥ || 30 ||
Just as a jewel, wanting nothing, simply lies there and its light shines out, so too, merely by the self existing, this whole mass of the world comes to be.
So both doing and not-doing exist together in one's own self. Because it wants nothing, it does not act; but merely by being present, it acts.
Since it is beyond all the senses, the self, which is pure being, is not a doer or an enjoyer. But since it is also joined to the senses, that very same self is the doer and the enjoyer.
With this firm conviction - 'I am present in everything, but I am not the doer' - a person is not stained, even while doing the work that comes his way in the flow of life.
So what does it matter if someone longs for a flood of pleasures - who is really there to seek them out or give them up? So always hold this firm belief: 'I am not the doer.'
That very equal feeling toward everything is all that remains - this is called the highest nectar of immortality. Or else, take up the great sense of doership, 'I do everything.'
Rama, if you want a settled state of mind, know that this too is the best one: the wonder of seeing, 'I am not making this whole illusion of the world.'
So how could attachment and hatred ever arise there, since it is impossible for there to truly be anyone else? One person tends this body with love, another burns it.
That is our own doing. So why should sorrow and joy take turns - in the spreading happiness of my companion, in the rising and passing of this web of the world?
When a person thinks within, 'I am the doer,' sorrow and joy begin to take turns. This same sense of being the doer of one's own self plays out through these very swings of sorrow and delight.
When this sense of being the doer dissolves by itself, only an equal feeling toward everything remains. That equal feeling toward all beings is the true, highest state.
tasyāmavasthitaṃ cittaṃ na bhūyo janmabhākmanāk| athavā sarvakartṛtvaṃ akartṛtvaṃ ca rāghava || 43 ||
A mind that rests in this equal feeling toward all is never again subject to birth, not even a little. Or else, Raghava, hold both total doership and total non-doership together.
This outlook, made up of chasing after such thoughts, does not bring contentment. It is the road to the hell of Kalasutra; it is the great net of surging waves.
The notion 'I am the body' is a row of trees in the forest of sword-leaves. It must be given up with every effort, even if total ruin stands right in front of you.
That notion should not be touched by a good person, just as one shuns an outcaste woman carrying dog's meat. It must be thrown far away, like a film of cataract over one's sight.
Whether you decide, clearly and for certain within yourself, 'I am not the doer, I am not even that self,' or you decide, 'I am the doer, I am everything,' or you settle on 'I am someone,' or 'I am nothing at all' - in the highest of all these, stand firm in your own true place, the place where the best knowers of the path, the good and wise, themselves stand.
