श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | कदाचिदथ मार्गेण तेन कैलासवासिनीम् | अहं स्नातुमदृश्यात्मा व्योमवीथीगतोऽगमम् || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | kadācidatha mārgeṇa tena kailāsavāsinīm | ahaṃ snātumadṛśyātmā vyomavīthīgato'gamam || 1 ||

English

Shri Vasishtha said: Once, while traveling on that path, I, invisible, went to bathe in the sky, reaching the abode of Kailasa.

हिन्दी

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: एक बार, उस मार्ग पर यात्रा करते हुए, मैं अदृश्य होकर आकाश में स्नान करने के लिए कैलास की ओर गया।

निर्गत्य नभसः सप्तमुनिमण्डलकोटरात् | रात्रौ प्राप्तोऽस्मि सुमते दाशूरतरुमुन्नतम् || २ ||

nirgatya nabhasaḥ saptamunimaṇḍalakoṭarāt | rātrau prāpto'smi sumate dāśūratarumunnatam || 2 ||

English

Emerging from the seventh sphere of the sages in the sky, I reached at night, O wise one, the lofty tree of Daśūra.

हिन्दी

आकाश के सातवें ऋषि मण्डल से निकलकर, मैं रात में, हे बुद्धिमान, दाशूर के ऊँचे वृक्ष तक पहुँचा।

यावच्छृणोमि विटपकुहरात्कानने वचः | कुड्मलाम्भोजलग्नस्य षट्पदस्येव निःस्वनम् || ३ ||

yāvacchṛṇomi viṭapakuharātkānane vacaḥ | kuḍmalāmbhojalagnasya ṣaṭpadasyeva niḥsvanam || 3 ||

English

While I was listening to the words in the forest from the hollow of the tree, it sounded like the hum of a bee resting on a lotus bud.

हिन्दी

जब मैं वृक्ष के खोखल से वन में शब्द सुन रहा था, तो वह कमल के कली पर बैठे भौंरे की भनभनाहट की तरह लगा।

शृणु पुत्र महाबुद्धे वस्तुतोऽस्य समामिमाम् | वर्णयामि महाश्चर्यामेकामाख्यायिकां तव || ४ ||

śṛṇu putra mahābuddhe vastuto'sya samāmimām | varṇayāmi mahāścaryāmekāmākhyāyikāṃ tava || 4 ||

English

Listen, O wise son, I will narrate to you this true and wonderful story in detail.

सुनो, हे बुद्धिमान पुत्र, मैं तुम्हें इस सच्ची और अद्भुत कहानी को विस्तार से सुनाता हूँ।

अस्ति राजा महावीर्यो विख्यातो भुवनत्रये | नाम्ना खोत्थ इति श्रीमाञ्जगदाक्रमणक्षमः || ५ ||

asti rājā mahāvīryo vikhyāto bhuvanatraye | nāmnā khottha iti śrīmāñjagadākramṇakṣamaḥ || 5 ||

English

There is a king, renowned in the three worlds, named Khottha, who is capable of conquering the world.

तीनों लोकों में विख्यात एक महावीर राजा है, जिसका नाम खोत्थ है, जो संसार को जीतने में सक्षम है।

यः साहसैकरसिको नानाश्चर्यविहारवान् | केनचित्त्रिषु लोकेषु न महात्मा वशीकृतः || ७ ||

yaḥ sāhasaikarasiko nānāścaryavihāravān | kenacitriṣu lokeṣu na mahātmā vaśīkṛtaḥ || 7 ||

English

He who is fond of daring feats and various wonderful activities, has not been subdued by anyone in the three worlds.

हिन्दी

जो साहसी कार्यों का प्रेमी है और विविध आश्चर्यजनक व्यवहारों से युक्त है, उसे तीनों लोकों में किसी ने वश में नहीं किया है।

यस्यारम्भसहस्राणि सुखदुःखप्रदान्यलम् | संख्यातुं केन शक्यन्ते कल्लोला जलधेरिव || ८ ||

yasyārambhasahasrāṇi sukhaduḥkhapradānyalam | saṃkhyātuṃ kena śakyante kalolā jaladheriva || 8 ||

English

Whose thousands of endeavors, which bestow joy and sorrow, are as difficult to count as the waves of the ocean.

जिसके हजारों प्रयास, जो सुख और दुःख देते हैं, समुद्र की लहरों की तरह गिनना मुश्किल है।

यस्य वीर्यं सुवीर्यस्य न शस्त्रैर्न च पावकैः। केनचिद्भुवने क्रान्तमाकाशमिव मुष्टिना || ९ ||

yasya vīryaṃ suvīryasya na śastrairna ca pāvakaiḥ kenacidbhuvane krāntamākāśamiva muṣṭinā || 9 ||

English

Whose valor is such that neither weapons nor fire can harm it, and who has conquered all worlds as effortlessly as the sky is grasped by a fist.

हिन्दी

जिसका पराक्रम ऐसा है कि न शस्त्र उसे हानि पहुँचा सकते हैं, न अग्नि, और जिसने सभी लोकों को मुट्ठी में आकाश की तरह सहज ही जीत लिया है।

यदीयां विततारम्भां लीलां निर्माणभासुराम् | न मनागनुवर्तन्ते शक्रोपेन्द्रहरा अपि || १० ||

yadīyāṃ vitatārambhāṃ līlāṃ nirmāṇabhāsurām | na manāganuvartante śakropeindrahara api || 10 ||

English

Even the gods like Indra and Vishnu cannot fully comprehend the playful and creative endeavors of the great soul.

हिन्दी

इंद्र और विष्णु जैसे देवता भी महान आत्मा के खेल और रचनात्मक प्रयासों को पूरी तरह से नहीं समझ सकते।

त्रयस्तस्य महाबाहो देहा विहरणक्षमाः | जगदाक्रम्य तिष्ठन्ति ह्युत्तमाधममध्यमाः || ११ ||

trayastasya mahābāho dehā viharaṇakṣamāḥ | jagadākramya tiṣṭhanti hyuttamādhamamadhyamāḥ || 11 ||

English

O mighty-armed one, the three bodies of the great soul, capable of enjoyment, pervade the world in their highest, lowest, and middle forms.

हिन्दी

हे महाबाहो, महान आत्मा के तीन शरीर, जो आनंद लेने में सक्षम हैं, अपने उत्तम, अधम और मध्यम रूपों में संसार में व्याप्त हैं।

व्योमन्येवातिवितते जातोऽसौ त्रिशरीरकःतत्रैव च स्थितिं यातः शब्दपातश्च पक्षिवत् || १२ ||

vyomanyevātivitate jāto'sau triśarīrakaḥtatraiva ca sthitiṃ yātaḥ śabdapātaśca pakṣivat || 12 ||

English

In the vast expanse of the sky, he was born as the three-bodied one. He remained there, and his voice spread like a bird's.

हिन्दी

व्योम के विस्तृत क्षेत्र में, उसने तीन शरीरों वाले के रूप में जन्म लिया। वह वहीं रहा, और उसकी आवाज पक्षी की तरह फैली।

तत्रैवापारगगने नगरं तेन निर्मितम् | चतुर्दशमहारथ्यं विभागत्रयभूषितम् || १३ ||

tatraivāpāragagane nagaraṃ tena nirmitam | caturdaśamahārathyaṃ vibhāgatrayabhūṣitam || 13 ||

English

In that very infinite sky, a city was created by him. It was adorned with fourteen great chariots and three divisions.

हिन्दी

उसी अनंत आकाश में, उसने एक नगर की रचना की। यह नगर चौदह महान रथों और तीन विभागों से सुशोभित था।

वनोपवनमालाढ्यं क्रीडाशिस्ररिसुन्दरम् | मुक्तालताविवलितवापीसप्तकभूषितम् || १४ ||

vanopavanamālāḍhyaṃ krīḍāśisrarisundaram | muktālatāvivaltavāpīsaptakabhūṣitam || 14 ||

English

The city was adorned with garlands of forests and gardens, beautiful with playful streams, and embellished with seven ponds surrounded by pearl vines.

हिन्दी

नगर वनों और उपवनों की मालाओं से सुशोभित था, खेल स्रोतों से सुंदर था, और मोती की लताओं से घिरे सात तालाबों से अलंकृत था।

शीतलोष्णात्मकाक्षीणदीपद्वयविराजितम् | ऊर्ध्वाधोगतिरूपेण वणिङ्मार्गेण संकुलम् || १५ ||

śītalōṣṇātmakākṣīṇadīpadvayavirājitam | ūrdhvādhogatirūpeṇa vaṇiṅmārgeṇa saṅkulam || 15 ||

English

The city was illuminated by two lamps, one cool and the other hot, and it was crowded with paths moving up and down.

नगर दो दीपों से प्रकाशित था, एक ठंडा और दूसरा गर्म, और यह ऊपर और नीचे जाने वाले मार्गों से भरा हुआ था।

तस्मिन्नेवातिविपुले पत्तने तेन भूभृता | संसारिणो विरचिता मुग्धापवरका गणाः || १६ ||

tasminnevātivipule pattane tena bhūbhṛtā | saṃsāriṇo viracitā mugdhāpavarakā gaṇāḥ || 16 ||

English

In that very vast city, the ruler created various groups of beings, some wise and some foolish.

उसी विशाल नगर में, शासक ने विभिन्न समूहों की रचना की, कुछ बुद्धिमान और कुछ मूर्ख।

ऊर्ध्वं केचिदधः केचित्केचिन्मध्ये नियोजिताः | केचिच्चिरेण नश्यन्त केचिच्छीघ्रविनाशिनः || १७ ||

ūrdhvaṃ kecidadhaḥ kecitkecinmadhye niyojitāḥ | kecicciereṇa naśyanta keciścīghravināśinaḥ || 17 ||

English

Some are placed above, some below, and some in the middle. Some perish after a long time, while others perish quickly.

हिन्दी

कुछ ऊपर हैं, कुछ नीचे हैं, और कुछ मध्य में हैं। कुछ लंबे समय के बाद नष्ट होते हैं, जबकि अन्य जल्दी नष्ट हो जाते हैं।

असितच्छादनच्छन्ना नवद्वारविभूषिताः | अनारतवहद्वाता बहुवातायनान्विताः || १८ ||

asitacchādanacchannā navadvāravibhūṣitāḥ | anāratavahadvātā bahuvātāyanānvitāḥ || 18 ||

English

Covered with dark cloth, adorned with nine doors, continuously blowing winds, and endowed with many wind passages.

अँधेरे कपड़े से ढके हुए, नौ दरवाजों से सजे हुए, लगातार हवा चलने वाले, और बहुत से हवा के रास्तों से युक्त।

दीपपञ्चकसालोकास्त्रिस्थूणाः शुक्लदारवः | मसृणालेपमृदवः प्रतोलीभुजसंकुलाः || १९ ||

dīpapañcakasālokāstristhūṇāḥ śukladāravaḥ | masṛṇālepamṛdavaḥ pratolībhujasaṅkulāḥ || 19 ||

English

Illuminated by five lamps, having three pillars, white and wooden, smooth with a coating, and filled with round-armed figures.

हिन्दी

पाँच दीपों से प्रकाशित, तीन खंभों वाले, सफेद और लकड़ी के, चिकने आलेप वाले, और गोल भुजाओं वाले आकृतियों से भरे हुए।

मायया रचितास्तेन राज्ञा तेषु महात्मना | रक्षितारो महायक्षा नित्यमालोकभीरवः || २० ||

māyayā racitāsten rājñā teṣu mahātmanā | rakṣitāro mahāyakṣā nityamālokabhīravaḥ || 20 ||

English

Created by the great king with his magical powers, the great Yakshas are the protectors, always fearful of the light.

महान राजा द्वारा अपनी माया से बनाए गए, महान यक्ष उनके रक्षक हैं, जो हमेशा प्रकाश से डरते हैं।

अथापवरकौघेषु चलत्सु स महीपतिः | करोति विविधां क्रीडां नीडेष्विव विहङ्गमः || २१ ||

athāpavarakaughēṣu calatsu sa mahīpatiḥ | karoti vividhāṃ krīḍāṃ nīḍēṣviva vihaṅgamaḥ || 21 ||

English

Then, in the moving multitudes of clouds, that king engages in various sports, like a bird in its nests.

हिन्दी

फिर, चलती हुई बादलों की भीड़ में, वह राजा विभिन्न खेलों में लग जाता है, जैसे पक्षी अपने घोंसलों में।

त्रिशरीरशतेष्वन्तस्तैर्यक्षैः सह पुत्रक | लीलावशमुषित्वा तु पुनर्निर्गम्य गच्छति || २२ ||

triśarīraśateṣvantastairyakṣaiḥ saha putraka | līlāvaśamuṣitvā tu punarnirgamya gacchati || 22 ||

English

O son, after enjoying with the Yakshas in the three hundred bodies, he departs again.

हिन्दी

हे पुत्र, तीन सौ शरीरों में यक्षों के साथ लीला करके फिर से निकलकर चला जाता है।

तस्येच्छा जायते वत्स कदाचिच्चलचेतसः | पुरं भविष्यन्निर्माणं किंचिद्यामीति निश्चला || २३ ||

tasyecchā jāyate vatsa kadāciccalacetasaḥ | puraṃ bhaviṣyannirmāṇaṃ kiṃcidyāmīti niścalā || 23 ||

English

O child, sometimes a desire arises in the restless mind to construct a future city, and it becomes unwavering.

हिन्दी

हे बच्चे, कभी-कभी चंचल मन में भविष्य के एक नगर का निर्माण करने की इच्छा उत्पन्न होती है, और वह अचल हो जाती है।

भूताविष्ट इवावेगात्तत उत्थाय धावति | पुरं तदप्यथाप्नोति गन्धर्वैरिव निर्मितम् || २४ ||

bhūtāviṣṭa ivāvegāttata utthāya dhāvati | puraṃ tadapyathāpnoti gandharvairiva nirmmitam || 24 ||

English

As if possessed by spirits, he rises with great speed and runs. He then attains that city as if created by the Gandharvas.

हिन्दी

मानो भूतों से आविष्ट, वह बड़े वेग से उठकर दौड़ता है। फिर वह उस नगर को प्राप्त करता है जैसे कि गंधर्वों द्वारा निर्मित हो।

तस्येच्छा जायते पुत्र कदाचिच्चलचेतसः | विनाशं संप्रयामीति तेनाशु स विनश्यति || २५ ||

tasyecchā jāyate putra kadāciccalacetasaḥ | vināśaṃ saṃprayāmīti tenāśu sa vinaśyati || 25 ||

English

O son, sometimes a desire arises in the restless mind to move towards destruction, and by that, he quickly perishes.

हिन्दी

हे पुत्र, कभी-कभी चंचल मन में विनाश की ओर बढ़ने की इच्छा उत्पन्न होती है, और उससे वह शीघ्र ही नष्ट हो जाता है।

पुनरुत्पद्यते तूर्णं स्वात्मनोर्मिरिवाम्भसः | व्यवहारं तनोत्युच्चैः पुनरारम्भमन्थरम् || २६ ||

punarutpadyate tūrṇaṃ svātmanormirivāmbhasaḥ | vyavahāraṃ tanotyuccaiḥ punarārambhamantharam || 26 ||

English

Again, it arises quickly like a wave from water, loudly engaging in activities, beginning anew.

हिन्दी

फिर से यह जल से तरंग की तरह शीघ्र ही उत्पन्न होता है, उच्च स्वर में व्यवहार करता हुआ, फिर से नया आरंभ करता है।

स्वयैव व्यवहृत्याथ कदाचित्परिभूयते | किंकरोस्म्यहमज्ञोऽस्मि दुःखितोऽस्मीति शोचति || २७ ||

svayaiva vyavahṛtyātha kadācitparibhūyate | kiṃkarosmyahamajño'smi duḥkhito'smīti śocati || 27 ||

English

Sometimes, one acts independently and then is defeated. One laments, 'I am a servant, I am ignorant, I am suffering.'

हिन्दी

कभी-कभी, कोई स्वयं कार्य करता है और फिर हार जाता है। वह शोक करता है, 'मैं एक सेवक हूँ, मैं अज्ञानी हूँ, मैं दुःखी हूँ।'

मुदमेत्य कदाचिच्च स्वयमायाति दीनताम् | प्रावृड्वर्षकलोल्लासपूरादिव नदीरयः || २८ ||

mudametya kadācicca svayamāyāti dīnatām | prāvṛḍvarṣakalollāsapūrādiva nadīrayaḥ || 28 ||

English

Sometimes, one attains joy and then independently falls into misery, like a river swelling with the joy of the rainy season.

हिन्दी

कभी-कभी, कोई आनंद प्राप्त करता है और फिर स्वयं दुःख में डूब जाता है, जैसे वर्षा ऋतु की खुशी से भरी नदी।

जयति गच्छति वल्गति जृम्भते स्फुरति भाति न भाति च भासुरः | सुत महामहिमा स महीपतिः पतिरपामिएव वातरयाकुलः || २९ ||

jayati gacchati valgati jṛmbhate sphurati bhāti na bhāti ca bhāsuraḥ | suta mahāmahimā sa mahīpatiḥ patirapāmievā vātarayākulaḥ || 29 ||

English

He conquers, he goes, he moves, he yawns, he trembles, he shines, he does not shine, and he is radiant. O son, that great majesty, the lord of the earth, is indeed the lord of the waters, agitated by the wind.

हिन्दी

वह जीतता है, जाता है, चलता है, जम्हाई लेता है, काँपता है, चमकता है, नहीं चमकता है, और चमकदार है। हे पुत्र, वह महान महिमा, पृथ्वी का स्वामी, वास्तव में जल का स्वामी है, जो हवा से व्याकुल है।
