He sat there on a bed of vine leaves. He looked around at all directions for a moment, then sat firmly in the lotus pose and pulled his mind back from everywhere.

His inner mind stayed still, as if it rested on a vine leaf that reached up into the sky. In this way, using only his mind, he carried out all the acts of the sacrifice, one after another.
There, for ten years, he worshipped the gods using only his mind, through sacrifices like the cow-sacrifice, the horse-sacrifice, and the man-sacrifice, and each time he gave rich gifts.
Why do you stand here so still, like a vine full of flowers, like a dear friend? When he said this, she of the fawn-like eyes, fair-skinned and full-breasted,
whose playful home is among these vines, O brahmin. I am the forest goddess of this wild grove. On the thirteenth day of the bright half of Chaitra, at the festival of Kama, the god of love,
My lord, you are like a great wish-granting tree that gives every good thing anyone could want. Since you are here, why should I grieve like someone with no protector, just because I have no son?
Go now, slender one. Within a month you will give birth to a lovely son, one worthy of honor, with dark eyes like a bee, just as a healthy creeper puts forth a flower.
jñānaṃ tvamevāsya vibho kṛpayopadiśādhunā| ko hi nāma kule jātaṃ putraṃ maurkhyeṇa yojayet|| 28 ||
You alone, lord, can give him that knowledge. Please teach him now, out of kindness. For who would leave a son born into a good family sitting in ignorance?
To her, speaking like this, the sage said, "Weak woman, leave your son here with me as a good disciple." And having said this, he sent her away.
He taught him with hundreds of stories and tales, with examples drawn from experience and insight, with accounts from history and old legends, and with the settled truths of the Veda and the Vedanta.
He taught calmly, always, and at length, through story after story grounded in real experience, so it would take firm root in his son, just as it had taken root in me.
Through the strength of his own experience, with an abundance of fitting, meaningful words full of feeling, the great sage, a truly noble soul, taught the son standing before him, the way a cloud in the sky stirs a peacock to dance.
