श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । तमथासौ तथा बुद्धिफलपल्लवशालिनम् । आनन्दमन्थरमनाः षुष्परूपाचलोपमम् ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | tamathāsau tathā buddhiphalapallavaśālinam | ānandamantharamanāḥ ṣuṣparūpācalopamam || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: then, with his mind grown slow and full with joy, he climbed that tree, which was thick with new shoots like the very fruit of wisdom, and looked like a whole mountain of flowers.

श्री वशिष्ठ बोले, तब उसका मन आनंद से भरकर शांत हो गया, और वह उस पेड़ पर चढ़ गया, जो नई कोंपलों से भरा था मानो वे समझ के फल हों, और जो फूलों के पूरे पहाड़ जैसा दिखता था।

कदम्बं रोदसीस्तम्भमारुरोह वनस्थितम् । एकार्णवगतं शौरिर्वटवृक्षमिवोन्नतम् ॥ २ ॥

kadambaṃ rodasīstambhamārurōha vanasthitam | ekārṇavagaṃ śaurirvaṭavṛkṣamivonnatam || 2 ||

It was the kadamba tree standing in the forest, like a pillar joining earth and sky. Shauri climbed it, and it towered as high as the banyan tree that once stood in that one endless ocean.

यह कदंब का पेड़ था, जो जंगल में खड़ा था, धरती और आकाश को जोड़ने वाले खंभे जैसा। शौरि उस पर चढ़ गया, और वह उतना ऊँचा उठा जितना वह बरगद का पेड़ जो कभी उस एक अनंत समुद्र में खड़ा था।

तत्रासौ व्योमलग्नायाः शाखायाः प्रान्तपल्लवे । विवेश विगताशङ्कमेकाग्रं तप आस्थितः ॥ ३ ॥

tatrāsau vyomalagnāyāḥ śākhāyāḥ prāntapallave | viveśa vigatāśaṅkamekāgraṃ tapa āsthitaḥ || 3 ||

There, on the very tip of a branch that touched the sky, he sat down without fear, and gave his whole mind, one-pointed, to hard inner discipline.

वहाँ, आकाश को छूती हुई एक डाल की सबसे ऊपरी पत्तियों पर, वह बिना किसी डर के बैठ गया, और अपना पूरा मन एक ही जगह टिकाकर कठिन तप में लगा दिया।

अथोपविश्य मृदुनि नवपल्लवविष्टरे । क्षणमालोकितास्तेन दिशः कौतुकचञ्चलम् ॥ ४ ॥

athopaviśya mṛduni navapallavaviṣṭare | kṣaṇamālokitāsten diśaḥ kautukacañcalam || 4 ||

Then, having sat down on the soft seat of fresh new shoots, for a moment he looked at the directions, his eyes restless with curiosity.

फिर, नई मुलायम कोंपलों के आसन पर बैठकर, उसने एक पल के लिए दिशाओं की ओर देखा, उसकी आँखें उत्सुकता से चंचल थीं।

सरिदेकावलीरम्याः शैलेन्द्रस्तनकुड्मलाः । निर्मलाकाशकबरा लोलनीलाम्बुदालकाः ॥ ५ ॥

saridekāvalīramyāḥ śailendrastanakuḍmalāḥ | nirmalākāśakabarā lolanīlāmbudālakāḥ || 5 ||

The directions were lovely: rivers were their single-string necklaces, great mountains were the round buds of their breasts, the clear sky was their braided hair, and restless dark clouds were their curling locks.

दिशाएँ बहुत सुंदर थीं, नदियाँ मानो उनके गले की एक लड़ी वाली माला थीं, बड़े-बड़े पहाड़ मानो उनके स्तनों की गोल कलियाँ थे, साफ आकाश मानो उनके गुँथे हुए बाल थे, और बेचैन काले बादल मानो उनकी घुँघराली लटें थीं।

नीलपल्लववसनाः पुष्पपूरावतंसिकाःगृहीतसागरापूर्णकलशाः पुरुभूषणाः ॥ ६ ॥

nīlapallavavasanāḥ puṣpapūrāvataṃsikāḥgṛhītasāgarāpūrṇakalaśāḥ purubhūṣaṇāḥ || 6 ||

Fresh dark leaves were their clothes, and flowers were their earrings. They held pots full of ocean water in their hands, and wore many ornaments.

हरी-नई पत्तियाँ मानो उनके कपड़े थीं, और फूल मानो उनकी बालियाँ। वे हाथों में समुद्र के पानी से भरे घड़े लिए थीं, और ढेर सारे गहने पहने थीं।

धृतप्रफुल्लपद्मिन्यः सुगन्धिमुखमारुताःनीलघुंघुमकाकल्यो निर्झरारावनूपुराः ॥ ७ ॥

dhṛtapraphullapadminyaḥ sugandhimukhamārutāḥnīlaghuṃghumakākalyo nirjharārāvanūpurāḥ || 7 ||

Ponds full of blooming lotuses were what they held, and their breath was a fragrant breeze. There was the soft, low hum of dark bees, and the sound of waterfalls was the anklets on their feet.

खिले हुए कमलों से भरे तालाब मानो उनके हाथों में थे, और उनकी साँस महकती हुई हवा जैसी थी। काले भँवरों की धीमी गुनगुनाहट थी, और झरनों की आवाज़ मानो उनके पैरों की पायल थी।

द्युमूर्धानो महीपादा वनालीरोमराजयःजङ्गलोरुनितम्बिन्यश्चन्द्रार्ककृतकुण्डलाः ॥ ८ ॥

dyumūrdhāno mahīpādā vanālīromarājayaḥjaṅgalorunitambinyaścandrārkakṛtakuṇḍalāḥ || 8 ||

The sky was their head and the earth was their feet. Rows of forests were the fine hair on their bodies, and wild stretches of land were their broad hips. The moon and the sun were the earrings they wore.

आकाश मानो उनका सिर था और धरती उनके पैर। जंगलों की कतारें मानो उनके शरीर के महीन रोएँ थीं, और बंजर-जंगली ज़मीन के फैलाव मानो उनके चौड़े नितंब थे। चाँद और सूरज मानो उनके कानों की बालियाँ थे।

शालिसंसारकेदाराश्चन्दनस्थालिकान्विताःशिखरोरसिजालग्नहिमशुभ्राम्बुदांशुकाः ॥ ९ ॥

śālisaṃsārakedārāścandanasthālikānvitāḥśikharorasijālagnahimaśubhrāmbudāṃśukāḥ || 9 ||

Rice fields were their farmland, and trays of sandalwood paste were with them. The snow-white clouds clinging to the peaks of their mountain-breasts were the wrap they wore.

धान के खेत मानो उनकी ज़मीन थे, और चंदन के लेप की थालियाँ उनके पास थीं। उनके पहाड़-जैसे स्तनों की चोटियों से चिपके बर्फ़-से सफ़ेद बादल मानो उनकी ओढ़नी थे।

महार्णवपयःपूरनवमण्डनदर्पणाःऋक्षौघघर्मपुलका भुवनान्तःपुरान्तराः ॥ १० ॥

mahārṇavapayaḥpūranavamaṇḍanadarpaṇāḥṛkṣaughagharmapulakā bhuvanāntaḥpurāntarāḥ || 10 ||

The water of the great ocean was the ever-fresh mirror they used to adorn themselves. The many stars were the goosebumps rising on their warm skin. And the very heart of the world was their own inner chambers.

बड़े समुद्र का पानी मानो उनका हमेशा नया शीशा था जिससे वे खुद को सजाती थीं। असंख्य तारे मानो उनकी गर्म त्वचा पर उठे रोंगटे थे। और संसार का भीतरी हिस्सा ही मानो उनके अपने महल के भीतरी कमरे थे।

आर्तवस्तनधारिण्यो लग्नसूर्यांशुकुङ्कुमाः । विचित्रकुसुमोपेताश्चन्द्रांशुसितचन्दनाः ॥ ११ ॥

ārtavastanadhāriṇyo lagnasūryāṃśukuṅkumāḥ | vicitra kusumopetāścandrāṃśusitacandanāḥ || 11 ||

Their breasts changed with the seasons. The clinging rays of the sun were the red powder on them. They were decked with many-colored flowers, and the rays of the moon were the white sandalwood paste on them.

उनके स्तन हर ऋतु के साथ बदल जाते थे। सूरज की चिपकी हुई किरणें मानो उनके ऊपर लगा लाल कुमकुम थीं। वे रंग-बिरंगे फूलों से सजी थीं, और चाँद की किरणें मानो उनके ऊपर लगा सफ़ेद चंदन था।

गगनगतलतादलोपविष्टः प्रसृतवनावनिवारिवाहवेषाः । त्रिभुवनवनिता ददर्श हृष्टः कुसुमनिरन्तरमण्डिता दशाशाः ॥ १२ ॥

gaganagatalatādalopaviṣṭaḥ prasṛtavanāvanivārivāhavēṣāḥ | tribhuvanavanitā dadarśa hṛṣṭaḥ kusumanirantaramaṇḍitā daśāśāḥ || 12 ||

Sitting on a vine-leaf that reached up into the sky, he looked on, delighted, at the ten directions, the women of the three worlds, dressed like clouds spread over forest and land, and decked all over, without a gap, in flowers.

आकाश तक पहुँची हुई एक लता के पत्ते पर बैठा हुआ, उसने खुश होकर दसों दिशाओं को देखा, तीनों लोकों की ये स्त्रियाँ, जंगल और धरती पर फैले बादलों जैसी सजी थीं, और बिना किसी जगह खाली छोड़े, पूरी तरह फूलों से सजी थीं।
