English

The vibration of that consciousness-body, which is vibration itself, attains the state of a region from consciousness alone, just as the calm ocean attains the state of motion.

antarabdherjalaṃ yadvatspandāspandavadīhate | sarvaśaktistathaikatra gacchati spandaśaktitām || 5 ||

English

Just as the water within the ocean moves with and without vibration, so too all powers converge into one and attain the power of vibration.

ātmanyevātmanā vyomni yathā sarati mārutaḥ | tathehātmātmaśaktyaiva svātmanyevaiti lolatām || 6 ||

English

Just as the wind moves freely in the sky, so does the self move freely within itself by its own power.

svaśikhāspandaśaktyaiva dīpaḥ saumyo yathonnatam | eti tadvadasāvātmā tatsve vapuṣi valgati || 7 ||

English

Just as a gentle lamp flickers due to the power of its own wick, so does the self flicker within its own form.

jalāntare'mbudhiryadvalllasadvārīva cañcalaḥ | sarvaśaktirvapuṣyeva tathā spandavilāsavān || 8 ||

English

Just as the ocean is restless with waves within its waters, so is the self, possessing all powers, restless with its own vibrations.

yathollasati bhāścakraiḥ kacankanakasāgaraḥ | tathātmani parispandaiḥ sphuratyakṣaiścidarṇavaḥ || 9 ||

English

Just as the ocean of gold shines with its radiant circles, so does the ocean of consciousness shine with its vibrations.

lakṣyate mauktikaspando yathā vyomni dṛśo'dṛśi | tathā bhāti lasadrūpā cicchaktiścinmahāmbare || 10 ||

English

Just as the vibration of a pearl is seen in the visible and invisible sky, so does the power of consciousness shine with its radiant form in the vast expanse of consciousness.

kiṃcitkṣubhitarūpā sā cicchaktiścinmahārṇave| tanmayī citsphuratyacchā tatraivormirivārṇave || 11 ||

English

That power of consciousness, slightly agitated in form, shines in the great ocean of consciousness. It appears as a wave in that very ocean, being of the same nature.

ātmano'vyatiriktaiva vyatirikteva tiṣṭhati| ālokaśrīrivālokakoṭare yattatāṃ gatā || 12 ||

English

That power, being non-different from the Self, stands as if different. Like the splendor of light in the hollow of light, it has attained that state.

kṣaṇaṃ sphurati sā devī sarvaśaktitayā tayā| cetati svāṃ svayaṃ śaktiṃ kalendoḥ śītatāmiva || 13 ||

English

That goddess, with all her powers, shines for a moment. She perceives her own power, like the coolness of the moon.

uditaiṣā prakāśākhyā cicchaktiḥ paramātmanaḥ| deśakālakriyāśaktīrvayasyāḥ saṃprakarṣati || 14 ||

English

This power of consciousness, known as illumination, arises from the Supreme Self. It intensifies the powers of place, time, and action.

svasvabhāvaṃ viditvainamādyantapade sthitā| rūpaṃ parimitāvāsau bhāvayatyavibhāvitā || 15 ||

English

Knowing her own nature, she remains in the state without beginning or end. She contemplates her form as if limited, though it is unlimited.

yadaivaṃbhāvitaṃ rūpaṃ tayā paramasattayā | tadaivaināmanugatā nāmasaṃkhyādikā dṛśaḥ || 16 ||

English

When the supreme reality is thus conceived, then the various forms of perception follow it.

cideva itadavastveva vyatiriktā tathātmanaḥ | anantā tadgataivāśu laharīva mahārṇavāt || 17 ||

English

This consciousness alone is the reality, distinct from the self. It quickly becomes infinite, like waves from the great ocean.

yathā kaṭakakeyūrairbhedo hemnovilakṣaṇaḥ | tathātmanaścito rūpaṃ bhāvayantyāḥ svamāṃśikam || 18 ||

English

Just as the distinction of bracelets and armlets is clear in gold, similarly, the form of consciousness is conceived as part of the self.

yathā dīpena dīpānāṃ jātānāmātmanāṃ tathā | deśakālakalāmātrabhedaḥ svābhāvikaściteḥ || 19 ||

English

Just as lamps born from a single lamp have differences in place, time, and form, so too does consciousness have natural differences.

deśakālaparispandaśaktisandīpitātha cit | saṃkalpamanudhāvantī prayāti kalanāpadam || 20 ||

English

Thus, consciousness, ignited by the power of vibration in space and time, follows the intention and proceeds to the state of division.

vikalpakalitākāraṃ deśakālakriyāspadam | cito rūpaṃ mahābāho kṣetrajña iti kathyate || 21 ||

English

The form of the mind, which is the abode of various alternatives, is called the knower of the field, O mighty-armed one.

kṣetraṃ śarīramityāhustadasau vetyakhṇḍitam | sabāhyābhyantaraṃ tena kṣetrajña iti kathyate || 22 ||

English

The body is called the field, and the one who knows it without division is called the knower of the field.

vāsanāṃ kalayanso'pi yātyahaṃkāratāṃ punaḥ | ahaṃkāro'pi nirṇetā kalaṅkī buddhirucyate || 23 ||

English

Even while accumulating desires, one attains the state of ego again. The ego is also the determiner, and the intellect is said to be the tainted one.

buddhiḥ saṃkalpakalitā prayāti manasaḥ padam | mano ghanavikalpaṃ tu gacchatīndriyatāṃ śanaiḥ || 24 ||

English

The intellect, affected by resolutions, goes to the state of the mind. The mind, full of dense alternatives, gradually goes to the state of the senses.

pāṇipādamayaṃ dehamindriyāṇi vidurbudhāḥ | daho'sau jñāyate loke sūyate'pi ca jīvati || 25 ||

English

The wise know the body to be made of hands and feet, and the senses. It is known in the world, it is born, and it also lives.

evaṃ jīvo hi saṃkalpavāsanārajjuveṣṭitaḥ | duḥkhajālaparītātmā kramādāyāti cittatām || 26 ||

English

Thus, the individual soul, bound by the rope of desires and impressions, surrounded by the net of sorrow, gradually attains purity of consciousness.

krameṇa pākavaśataḥ phalameti yathānyatām | avasthayaiva nākṛtyā jīvo malavaśāttathā || 27 ||

English

Gradually, due to the ripening of actions, the soul attains different states, not by any artificial means, but naturally due to the influence of impurities.

jīvo'haṃkāratāṃ prāptastvahaṃkāraśca buddhitām | saṃkalpajālakalitāṃ manastāṃ buddhirāgatā || 28 ||

English

The individual soul attains the state of ego, and the ego attains the state of intellect. The intellect, entangled in the net of desires, attains the state of mind.

mano hi saṃkalpamayaṃ saṃsthāgrahaṇatatparam | pratiyogivyavacchinnaprāptisatyairapīhitaiḥ || 29 ||

English

The mind is indeed full of desires, intent on grasping objects. It is obscured by the attainment of objects, which are limited by their opposites.

icchādyāḥ śaktayaśceto gāvo vṛṣamivonmadam | anudhāvanti doṣāya saritaḥ sāgaraṃ yathā || 30 ||

English

Desires and other mental faculties, like cows following an intoxicated bull, rush towards faults, just as rivers flow into the ocean.

iti śaktimayaṃ ceto ghanāhaṃkāratāṃ gatam| kośakārakrimiriva svecchayā yāti bandhanam || 31 ||

English

Thus, the mind, which is full of power, becomes dense with ego| Like a silkworm, it goes into bondage by its own will || 31 ||

English

From the pursuit of one's own resolutions, as if by bonds, one does not obtain a body| The self, having come into bondage, suffers greatly in this || 32 ||

baddhamasmīti kalayadvidyātattvaṃ jahacchanaiḥ| avidyāṃ janayatyantarjagajjaṅgalarākṣasīm || 33 ||

English

Thinking 'I am bound,' one gradually abandons the essence of knowledge| Within, one generates the ignorance that is the forest demoness || 33 ||

English

Being within the flame of one's own imagined limitations, one reaches the ultimate helplessness, like a lion bound by chains || 34 ||

vicitrakāryakartṛtvaṃ āharadvāsanāvaśāt| svecchāmātrānuracitā daśāścānupatattathā || 35 ||

English

One takes on the role of a doer of various actions due to the influence of desires| Thus, one's states are shaped solely by one's own will || 35 ||
