Rama said, your words are like the middle of the ocean of milk. They are cool and perfectly clear in their brightness. They are wonderful, and on every side they seem very deep.
Because of them, for a moment I feel as if I have gone blind, and the next moment I become clear and bright again, like a day in the rainy season, where the sunshine turns soft and calm, and the clouds keep moving and changing.
That one is endless, beyond measure, everything there is, one alone, shining, and its greatness never fades. How, then, has this sense of division come into it.
Vasishtha said, everything I have told you says exactly what is true. None of it is weak, none of it twists the meaning, and none of it goes against what I said before or what I will say after.
When your eye of knowledge becomes clear, and your awakening has fully opened up, then, being at peace in yourself, you will rightly understand what is strong and what is weak in how I speak and see.
All this, the words, their meanings, and the way sentences are built, is arranged only so that the pupil can be taught and can grasp the meaning of the scripture. It may look confusing, but do not lose yourself in that confusion.
This spreading out of words, which seems to create divisions, is set up only for the sake of those being taught, so that the pupil gets the teaching and grasps the meaning of the scripture.
This whole spread of words and their meanings is made up only for teaching, and only for those who do not yet know. For those who already know that truth, it isn't real at the deepest level.
In the self there is nothing at all, no sense of division, no impurity, no delusion, nothing of that kind. The highest Brahman has no taint of desire in it, and that same Brahman is this world standing before us.
This same truth, sinless Rama, must be told again and again, using many different kinds of reasoning, in full detail, whenever the time comes to state the final conclusion.
It is by ignorance itself, but ignorance at its best, ignorance that wants to work toward ending itself, that we long for that knowledge, Rama, which takes away every fault.
One weapon is stopped by another weapon. Dirt is washed away using dirt. One poison is calmed by another poison. One enemy is killed by another enemy.
This is what this illusion, Rama, is like, it brings joy through its own destruction. You cannot pin down its nature. The moment you look closely at it, it disappears.
aprekṣyamāṇā sphurati prekṣitā su vinaśyati| māyeyamaparijñāyamānarūpaiva valgati || 17 ||
When you do not look closely at it, it shines and seems real. When you do look closely, it disappears completely. This illusion only plays about as long as its true nature stays unknown.
How strange this illusion really is, Rama, the very thing that ties us to the cycle of birth and death. It is unreal, yet it seems completely real, and it makes itself known to us in that same unreal yet completely real way.
Within that one reality, which has no divisions in it at all, this illusion of the world stretches out what looks like endless division. And it is exactly because of this that he is called the highest of all, the Supreme Person.
In the deepest truth, this illusion does not exist at all. But you will not see this simply by holding tightly to that thought in your mind. Only when you become the knower and directly reach what is to be known will you truly understand what this illusion means.
Whoever holds this conviction deep inside, that this is real, that it is Brahman, that person too has a share in freedom. But there is also the view that keeps taking this world of moving and unmoving things as real, holding fast to that belief.
That view is the trap that catches every creature in the whole world. Now think of one whose single, firm conviction is this: this wandering world is like a dream, it seems real but it is not.
He looks at the world with a self that clings to nothing. So he does not sink into sorrow. His conviction about these unreal things is really nothing but the conviction of knowing his own self.
Even so, holding on to this unreal world as true is nothing but ignorance itself. No fault at all, not even being changed or affected, exists in the great self.
These faults seem to be in the supreme self only the way dust seems to be in water. This tainting is made of thought, of words, and of the meaning of words, and it belongs only to the world.
Thought, word, and meaning arose only for everyday practical use. They are not truly separate from the self. Take away this everyday use, and these teachings of the scriptures would have no purpose.
Threads woven into a cloth are no longer seen as separate threads. In the same way, the self, carried along by ignorance, is not recognized here for what it truly is.
ātmajñānādṛte tacca śāstrārthātsamavāpyate avidyāsaritaḥ pāramātmalābhādṛte kila || 30 ||
The true meaning of the scriptures is reached only by knowing the self. And the far shore of this river of ignorance is never reached except by attaining the supreme self.
It has surely settled into being. It has found its own place and stands there fixed. So, Rama, do not let this question rise in your mind: where has this been born from?
yata eṣā yathā caiṣā yathā naṣṭetyakhṇḍitam | vastutaḥ kila nāsty eṣā vibhāty eṣā na vekṣitā || 34 ||
Where it comes from, what it is, how it is destroyed, all these questions come to nothing. Because in truth, this ignorance does not exist at all. It only seems to shine, but look closely, and it is not found.
Who can ever know how something unreal comes to seem real? This ignorance, once born, has grown to its full strength. Its vast form exists only to cause harm.
Do this so that it never again binds you to the sufferings of birth. Root out this ignorance, this stain. It is the one true friend of every calamity, the flower of the tree of unwisdom, the mother of a whole host of misfortunes.
Cast away this false way of seeing completely and by force. It brings fear, despair, deep anguish, and disaster. It grows the great covering of delusion over the heart. Cross over and reach the far shore of the ocean of rebirth.
