Vasishtha said, in this way living beings are just heaps of imagining, held in place by the idea of a separate existence. They rise up out of the imagined shape of Brahman, in hundreds of thousands, even in millions.
Countless beings were born before, are being born now, and go on being born even now, and they will keep springing up too, like drops of water flying up from a waterfall.
Caught up in their own inner habits, they fall helpless under their own desires. In these many different conditions, they end up putting the chains on their own minds themselves.
Some are in their very first birth. Some have already had more than a hundred births. Some have had countless births. And some have passed through two or three lives.
Some are born again and again for thousands of world ages, staying each time in the same kind of womb. Others take on a different kind of birth each time.
Some are kinnaras, gandharvas, vidyadharas, or great serpents. Some are the Sun, Indra, Varuna, the three eyed Shiva, Vishnu who is beyond the senses, or Brahma born from the lotus.
Some are kushmanda goblins, vetala spirits, yakshas, rakshasa demons, or flesh eating pishachas. Some remain brahmins, kings, or groups of vaishyas and shudras.
Some are from low outcaste groups, dog cookers, chandalas, kiratas, and pukkasas. Some are grass and medicinal plants. Some are fruits, roots, or insects.
Some are sarus cranes, ruddy geese, herons, storks, or cuckoos. Some have become lotuses, the day lotus, the white water lily, the night lotus, or the blue lotus.
Some have become part of the wheel of stars in the sky. Others have gone somewhere among them. Some remain as the wind, and some remain fixed in the open sky.
Some, freed while still alive, wander here in the world as truly blessed people. Some have already been free for a long time. And others, surely, have fully ripened into freedom.
Some will become free and blessed only after a long time. And some, even though they are consciousness itself, hate the idea of standing alone as pure self.
Some are the vast directions of space. Some are rivers rushing with great force. Some are women with lovely eyes. And some are eunuchs, neither man nor woman.
Bound by hundreds of ropes of desire, carrying their inner tendencies with them, they move from one body to another body, like birds moving from one tree to another tree.
Through the illusion that keeps producing endless, endless thoughts and imaginings, this whole great world, spread out like a magic show, comes into being.
Just as masses of whirlpools keep turning in water, so the deluded keep wandering in this world of birth and death, for as long as they do not see their own faultless self.
Having seen the self, having let go of the unreal, having reached true awareness, and in time having arrived at that state, they are not born here again.
Having lived through thousands of births, some who are unwise fall back again into the trouble of this world, even after gaining the wisdom to tell the real from the unreal.
Some rise to a position of great power, but because their thinking stays petty, they fall back into the state of an animal, and from being an animal even into hell.

Multitudes of souls come out endlessly from that Supreme reality. They cannot be described, they are known only to themselves, and they quickly flash forth right there again.
Like the changing seasons that come from time, like fragrance that comes from a flower, like the coolness that comes from a stream of rain, like waves that rise from the sea.
Being born again and again, and in time living through one body after another, the multitudes of souls at last go back, on their own, to their own resting place.
This vast, deluding illusion, which builds the three worlds and everything else, endlessly rises so high, perishes, and grows, all for nothing, within the Supreme itself, like a wave in the mass of the sea's water.
