Sri Rama said: How is the origin of these living beings from the state of Brahman? How many and of what kind are they? Please explain in detail, O Lord.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | utpadyante yathā citrā brahmaṇo bhūtajātayaḥ | yathā nāśaṃ prayāntyetā yathā mukta bhavanti hi || 2 ||

English

Vasistha said: Just as various beings are born from Brahman, they also perish and become liberated in the same way.

yathā ca parivardhante tiṣṭhantyantarhitā yathā | saṃkṣepeṇa mahābāho śṛṇu vakṣyāmi te'nagha || 3 ||

English

Just as they grow and remain hidden, O mighty-armed one, listen, I will explain to you briefly, O sinless one.

brāhmī cicchaktiramalā kalpayantī yadṛcchayā | sarvaśaktiḥ svayaṃ cetyaṃ bhavatyaākalanātmakam || 4 ||

English

The pure Brahmic power of consciousness, creating at will, possesses all powers and becomes the self-aware mind.

kalanāddhanatāmetya yatkiṃcidapi sā svayam | saṃkalpayati paścāttattattāmeti manaḥpadam || 5 ||

English

Having attained the state of vibration, it becomes anything by itself. Thereafter, it conceives and attains the state of the mind.

manaḥsaṃkalpamātreṇa gandharvapuravatkṣaṇāt | tanotīdamasaddṛśyaṃ brāhmīṃ sthitimiva tyajat || 6 ||

English

By mere mental resolve, this unreal and visible world is instantly created like the city of the Gandharvas, and it abandons the Brahman-like state.

citsvarūpaṃ parikacacchūnyamevāvatiṣṭhate | yattaddṛśyaṃ sthitaṃ tatsyāddṛśyamākāśameva tat || 7 ||

English

The true nature of consciousness remains void and pure. That which is seen as existing is merely a void and space.

kṛtvā padmajasamkalpaṃ rūpaṃ paśyati padmajam | tato jagatkalpayati saprajāpatipūrvakam || 8 ||

English

Having made the resolve of Brahma, one sees the form of Brahma. From that, one imagines the world along with the progenitors.

caturdaśavidhānantabhūtajātasaghuṅghumā | sṛṣṭirevamiyaṃ rāma cittanirmitimāgatā || 9 ||

English

O Rama, this creation, consisting of fourteen types of endless beings, has come into existence through the mind's creation.

cittamātramayī śūnyā vyomamātraśarīrikā | saṃkalpamātranagarī bhrāntimātrātmikā satī || 10 ||

English

This existence is merely the mind, void, having the body of space alone, a city of mere resolve, and essentially an illusion.

iha kāścinmahāmohā bhūtānāṃ jātayaḥ sthitāḥ | kāścidabhyuditajñānāḥkāścinmadhye skhalanti hi || 11 ||

English

Here, some beings are in great delusion, some have arisen with knowledge, and some are faltering in the middle.

bhuvī saṃbadhyamānānāṃ yāntyenāmupadeśyatām | sarvāsāṃ bhūtajātīnāṃ yā etā narajātayaḥ || 12 ||

English

On this earth, those who are bound by attachments attain the state of being instructed. All these are the various types of human beings.

bahvādhayo duḥravamayā mohadveṣabhayāturāḥ | tāsāṃ samyakpravakṣyāmi tāvadrājasasāttvikīḥ || 13 ||

English

There are many sufferings, difficult to endure, caused by delusion, hatred, and fear. I will now properly explain the Rajasic and Sattvic natures.

yattadapyamṛtaṃ brahma sarvavyāpi nirāmayam | cidābhāsam anantākhyam anādi vigatabhramam || 14 ||

English

That which is also known as the immortal Brahman, is all-pervading, free from disease, a reflection of consciousness, known as endless, without beginning, and free from delusion.

nispandavapuṣastasya spandaḥ sattaikadeśataḥ | ghanatāmeti saumye'bdhau calatā calatāmiva || 15 ||

English

The motionless form of that Brahman, through a part of its existence, assumes density in the calm ocean, like movement in movement.

śrīrāma uvāca | anantasyātmatattvasya ekadeśaḥ ka ucyate | kathaṃ vikāritā vā syātkathaṃ vā dvayavikramaḥ || 16 ||

English

Sri Rama said: How can a part of the infinite Self be described? How can there be modification or duality?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | tena jātaṃ tatojātamitīyaṃ racanā girām | śāstrasaṃvyavahārārthaṃ na rāma paramārthatḥ || 17 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: The creation described as 'born from that, born from this' is for the sake of scriptural discourse, not for the ultimate truth, O Rama.

vikāritāvayavitādiksattādeśatādayaḥ | kramā na saṃbhavantīśe dṛśyamānodayā api || 18 ||

English

Modifications, parts, existence, and other such attributes do not actually exist in the Supreme Being, even though they appear to arise.

taṃ vinā kalpanaiavānyā nāsti nāpi bhaviṣyati | kutastyau kramaśabdārthāvuktayo vyavahārajāḥ || 19 ||

English

Without the Supreme Being, there is no other imagination, nor will there be. Where do the meanings of sequence and words, which are said to arise from usage, come from?

yā yeha kalanā yo'rtho yaḥ śabdo yo girāṃ gaṇaḥ | tajjatvāttanmayatvācca tattatpadamiveṣyate || 20 ||

English

Whatever calculation, meaning, word, or collection of words there is, due to its origin and essence, it is considered as that very word.

tajjaḥ sa eva bhavati vahnervahnirivottithaḥ | janyo'yaṃ janakaścāyamityuktā bhedakalpanā || 21 ||

English

The effect is none other than the cause, just as fire arises from fire. The distinction between the effect and the cause is merely a conceptual one.

ayamasmātsamutpanna itīyaṃ yā jagatsthitiḥ | ādhikyaṃ tatkriyāśaktau janyaṃ janakameva vā || 22 ||

English

This world exists because it has arisen from that. The superiority in the power of action belongs to both the effect and the cause.

idamanyadidaṃ cānyaditi śabdārthaviklavaḥ | uktāveva na deve'sti pramitau bhinnatā yataḥ || 23 ||

English

The distinction between 'this' and 'that' is a confusion of words and meanings. In the ultimate reality, there is no difference between the two.

tajjayeva manaḥśaktyā svataḥ saṃjñā pravartate | dṛḍhabhāvanayā tasmādiṣṭo'rthaḥ pratipadyate || 24 ||

English

By the power of the mind, the concept of 'that' arises spontaneously. Through firm conviction, the desired object is realized.

agneḥ śikhāyā ekasyā dvitīyā janaketi yā | uktivaiśitryamevaitannoktyarthe'trāsti satyatā || 25 ||

English

The statement that one flame of fire is the cause of another is merely a variation in expression; there is no truth in the meaning of the statement.

na janyajanakādyāstāḥ saṃbhavantyuktayaḥ pare| ekameva hyanantatvātkim kathaṃ janayiṣyati || 26 ||

English

The statements about the origin of the universe do not apply to the Supreme| Only the One, being infinite, can create| What and how will it create?

uktireva svabhāvo'yamuktiruktiranantaram| pratiyogivyavacchedasaṃkhyādyarthe na yujyate || 27 ||

English

The nature of the statement itself is such that one statement follows another| It is not suitable for the purpose of distinguishing the counterpart, number, etc.

ūrmijālamivāmbhodhau pare yaḥ paridṛśyate| śabdo'rthakalanākārastadbrahmaiva vidurbudhāḥ || 28 ||

English

Like the web of waves in the ocean, the Supreme is seen| The wise know that sound, which is the form of the calculation of meaning, is indeed that Brahman

brahma cidbrahma ca mano brahma vijñānavastu ca| brahmārtho brahma śabdaśca brahma cidbrahma dhātavaḥ || 29 ||

English

Brahman is consciousness, Brahman is the mind, Brahman is the object of knowledge| Brahman is the meaning, Brahman is the sound, Brahman is the elements of consciousness

brahma sarvamidaṃ viśvaṃ viśvātītaṃ ca tatpadam| vastutastu jagannāsti sarvaṃ brahmaiva kevalam || 30 ||

English

Brahman is all this universe, and it is also beyond the universe| In reality, the world does not exist; everything is only Brahman

ayamanyo'yamanyo'yaṃ bhāga ityambarātmani | mithyājñānavikalpoktirvāci satyārthatātra kā || 31 ||

English

This is different, this is different, this is different—such is the notion in the self of the sky. The false notion of knowledge, what truth is there in speech?

vahneḥ śikheva jāteyaṃ śikheti manaso'bhidhā | cāpalotthavikalpaśrīrvastutaḥ syānna siddhyati || 32 ||

English

Like the flame arising from fire, the mind's notion of the flame does not truly exist.

asatyeva vikalpoktiḥ satyabhāvo vikalpate | tamopahatadṛṣṭitvāddvicandrajñānadoṣavat || 33 ||

English

The false notion itself is spoken of as true. Due to the vision obscured by darkness, it is like the flaw of seeing two moons.

sarvasmātsarvagāttasmādanantādbrahmaṇaḥ padāt | nānyatkiñcitsaṃbhavati tadutthaṃ yattadeva tat || 34 ||

English

From the all-pervading, infinite Brahman, nothing else arises. Whatever arises from that is only that.

brahmatattvaṃ vinā neha kiñcidevopapadyate | kharvaṃ ca khalvidamaṃ brahmetyaiṣaiva paramārthatā || 35 ||

English

Without the essence of Brahman, nothing here is possible. Indeed, this Brahman is the ultimate truth.

evaṃprāyaśca he prājña siddhāntaste bhaviṣyati | tatraivodāhariṣyāmaḥ siddhāntārthoktipañjaram || 36 ||

English

Thus, O wise one, your doctrine will be established | There itself, we shall illustrate the essence of the doctrine.

ihāvidyādikāḥ kecidvidyante netarakramāḥ | jñāsyasyaalamaśeṣārthāṃstattadajñānasankṣaye || 37 ||

English

Here, some forms of ignorance exist, not others | You will know all things in the destruction of that ignorance.

avastusaṃkṣaye vastu yathāvastu prasīdati | yathā ca dṛśyate dṛśyaṃ jagannaiśatamaḥkṣaye || 38 ||

English

In the destruction of non-existence, the reality appears as it is | Just as the visible world appears with the destruction of darkness.

yadidamakhilamātataṃ kudṛṣṭyā tadupaśame tava rāma nirmalāme | avitathapadanirmale bhaviṣyatyavitathameva na saṃśayo'tra kaścit || 39 ||

English

Whatever is all this, perceived wrongly, will cease in you, O Rama, in pure form | In the pure and true words, it will become true, there is no doubt about it.
