Sri Rama said: Lord, if only the supreme Brahman truly exists, as you say, then where does creation come from, a painting with no wall to hold it? Tell me this, great one.
Sri Vasishtha said: Prince, it is this same reality of Brahman that turns into everything, because it holds all powers. That is why all powers are seen in Brahman.
In the same way, the mass of pure consciousness becomes the mind, and because it is conscious, it gathers all its powers, the ones made of action, the ones made of past habits, the ones made of thought. It shows them, carries them, creates them, and throws them out again.
They rise up from that supreme reality, and because it is conscious, they sink fully back into it. They are always made of nothing but it, just as waves are made of nothing but the ocean.
kva kilātītamanaḥṣaṣṭhendriyavṛtti brahmatattvaṃ kva bhaṅgureyaṃ tajjā padārthaśrīriti vacanaracanā | yadi cāyamārambho brahmaṇa āpatitastadanena tatsadṛśenaiva bhavitavyam || 9 ||
Where is the reality of Brahman, which lies beyond the mind and the five senses? And where is this fragile beauty of the world of things, said to be born from it? That is how your words sound to me. And if this world truly arose from Brahman, then it should be just like Brahman.
Having heard this, that a stain seems to appear in the supreme Lord, the spotless self of pure consciousness who is beyond this world, the blessed sage spoke.
This world, just as it stands, is nothing but Brahman. There is truly no stain in it at all, sinless one. In the ocean, the water shows itself as wave after wave, but no dirt appears in it.
Sri Rama said: Brahman has no suffering and no opposites, yet the world born from it is full of suffering. This is not clear to me, master. I do not understand what you are saying.
For someone whose mind is fully trained, who has known all that is to be known, who is wise, and who through his own good judgment has gone all the way to the end of the teachings on the path to freedom.
na kaścitkasyaciddōṣō nāsti vidyātmani hyalam | yāvannoktaṃ na viśrāntiṃ tāvadetyeṣa rāghavaḥ || 20 ||
For such a person, no one is ever at fault for anything. There is truly no fault at all in the self that is pure knowledge. But until this is told to him in words, he finds no rest. This is exactly how far Raghava has come.
But for someone whose understanding is only half grown, it is not right to say this plainly. Such a person still looks at the visible world with an eye bent on pleasure, and if told this, he simply destroys himself.
For someone who has reached the highest vision, no desire for pleasure arises anymore. Only then, in time, does the teaching that everything is Brahman truly fit him.
First the student should be made pure through qualities like calmness and self-control. Only afterward should he be taught that all this is Brahman, and that he himself is pure.
But for someone whose understanding has fully woken up, whose craving for pleasure has faded away, and who wants nothing more, for such a great soul it is right to say that there is no stain of ignorance at all.
aparīkṣya ca yaḥ śiṣyaṃ praśāstyatimūḍhadhīḥ| sa eva narakaṃ yāti yāvadābhūtasaṃplavam || 26 ||
And whoever teaches a student without first testing him is himself utterly foolish. He goes to hell, and stays there until the dissolution of the whole universe.
Vasishtha said, O sinless one, whether there is a flaw in Brahman or not is a thing to be spoken of at the time of the final teaching. You will know it yourself, Raghava.
Just as you see magicians do wonderful, illusory acts, making real things seem unreal and unreal things seem real, in the same way the Self, though it is not made of illusion, appears as if made of illusion, like the greatest of magicians. It turns a pot into cloth and cloth into a pot. It grows a vine on a bare rock, like the Nandana garden appearing on the golden slope of Mount Meru. It grows a rock on a vine, like a cluster of jewels appearing on wish-granting trees. It sets a forest in the empty sky.
In that same world it will make something like a garden of the Gandharvas appear. Through mere imagination it makes a city appear in the empty sky. It turns the sky into solid ground, the way a magic ointment can make a person's own shadow disappear.
Since only one single thing exists here, appearing everywhere, in every way, as everything, where then, Rama, is there room for delight, resentment, or astonishment?
These are indeed just arguments. This Self makes them on purpose, and does not erase what has already come to be, just as the ocean does not hold back the waves it has raised.
Then what is it? It is like ghee hidden in milk, a pot hidden in clay, cloth hidden in threads, a banyan tree hidden in a seed. These are powers that rest in the Self alone. When they become visible, we deal with them as if they were real things, even though nothing new has actually been made at all, just like waves.
This only comes about when a person stays, with an even mind, in the true nature of the Self, the witness, free of all flaw, always calm and undisturbed.
sati dīpa ivālokaḥ satyarka iva vāsaraḥ | sati puṣpa ivāmodaḥ svataḥ saṃpadyate jagat || 43 ||
As light appears when there is a lamp, as day comes when there is the sun, as fragrance comes when there is a flower, so the world comes into being on its own.
In truth, the Lord stands completely untouched by flaw amid the sights of this world. He is not one who remakes what is destroyed, or destroys what is made. He alone appears, sometimes clearly, sometimes faintly, sometimes not at all, like stars, like clusters of flowers.
For those who come down into birth, ignorance arises at the very moment of their coming down, or else true knowledge grows firm. After that, the tree of worldly life spreads out wide, with a hundred thousand branches, heavy with countless good and bad fruits, and covered with branches.
Its shape has bloomed with hopes and desires. It bears the bitter fruit of suffering and other such harsh experiences. It puts out new leaves, and in old age it flowers, and it shines all over with the creeper of craving. Cut down this tree called worldly life, it is a chain around you, with the sword of clear understanding. Then, free, wander about here at ease, like a great elephant let loose from the post it was tied to.
