English

Vasishtha said: Now, listen to what I am going to tell you about what happened to Shambara in the city that resembled a mountain, after the sons-in-law had gone.

tathā gaganavibhraṣṭe samaste dhvastasaṃsthitau | vinaṣṭe śambarānīke śaradīvābdamaṇḍale || 2 ||

English

Similarly, when the entire sky was shattered and the whole arrangement was destroyed, Shambara's army was annihilated like the autumnal circle of the year.

3

English

Having thus realized the true nature of things, free from false notions, they will not succumb to ego and will conquer those gods.

English

Thus thinking, the king of demons, with his intellect, created such demons through illusion, like bubbles in the ocean.

atha kṣīrodakuhare tāvatsā suravāhinī | uvāsa yāvadbhagavāṃstannirāsārthamudyayau || 22 ||

English

Then, the celestial maiden stayed in the cave of the ocean of milk until Lord Vishnu set out to remove her distress.

English

In that battle, the demon Shambara, along with his army and vehicles, was slain by Narayana (Lord Vishnu) and went to the Vaishnavi city.

bhīmabhāsadṛḍhāste tu tasminviṣamasamgare | viṣṇunaiva śamaṃ nītāḥ pavaneneva dīpikāḥ || 25 ||

English

In that unequal battle, those fierce and strong ones were pacified by Vishnu alone, like lamps extinguished by the wind.

English

When they attain peace through the absence of desires, their path is not known, just like the extinguishing of lamps.

tasmādvāsanayā baddhaṃ muktaṃ nirvāsanaṃ manaḥ | rāma nirvāsanībhāvamāharasva vivekataḥ || 27 ||

English

Therefore, the mind bound by desires should be freed and made desireless. O Rama, bring about the state of desirelessness with discrimination.

By right observation of the truth, desires dissolve. When desires dissolve, the mind attains peace like a lamp.

na satyaṃ kiṃcideveha sadbhāvo bhāvayaty alam | nāstyeva bhāvanā tasmādityetatsamyagīkṣaṇam || 29 ||

English

There is no truth here at all. The sense of existence creates enough. Therefore, there is no imagination. This is the right perception.

ātmaivedaṃ jagatsarvaṃ kaḥ kiṃ bhāvayatu kva vā | bhāvanā nāma nāstveva tadetatsamyagīkṣaṇam || 30 ||

English

The self alone is this entire world. Who can imagine what and where? Imagination does not exist. This is the right perception.

vāsanācittanāmānau śabdāvarthasamanvitau | satyāvalokanādyatra vilīnau tatparaṃ padam || 31 ||

English

The names 'desire' and 'mind' are endowed with meaning and sound. When they are dissolved through the realization of truth, that is the supreme state.

vāsanāvalitaṃ cittamih sthitimupāgatam | tadeva tadvinirmuktaṃ vimuktamiti kathyate || 32 ||

English

The mind covered with desires has attained a state here. That very mind, when freed from those desires, is said to be liberated.

nānāghaṭapaṭākāraiścetaḥsthitimupāgatam | tadevāśu śamaṃ neyaṃ mithyāyakṣa ivotthitaḥ || 33 ||

English

The mind has attained various forms like pots and cloths. That very mind should quickly be brought to peace, like an illusory demon that has arisen.

dāmavyālakaṭākāraiścetaḥ pariṇataṃ yathā | bhīmabhāsadṛḍhanyāyo rāghavāstvacalastava || 34 ||

English

Just as the mind takes the form of a rope, snake, or cloth, so too, O Raghava, your firm resolve should be unwavering like the terrifying and firm logic.

dāmavyālakaṭanyāyo mā te bhavatu rāghava | etadrāma purā proktaṃ pitrā kamalajena me || 35 ||

English

O Raghava, may this logic of the rope, snake, and cloth not happen to you. O Rama, this was told to me long ago by my father, the lotus-born.

bhavate yanmayā proktaṃ śiṣyāyātyantadhīmate | dāmavyālakaṭanyāyastasmānmā te'stu rāghava | bhīmabhāsadṛḍhanyāyo nityamastu tavānagha || 36 ||

English

O Raghava, what I have told you, the wise disciple, is the logic of the rope and the snake. Therefore, let it not be so for you. May the firm logic of the terrifying serpent always be with you, O sinless one.

aviralasukhaduḥkhasaṅkaṭeyaṃ bhavapadavī bhavatāpanopayātā | vyavaharaṇavato vibhūtiyātau satatamasaktatayaiva naśyatīti || 37 ||

English

This worldly path is full of uninterrupted happiness, sorrow, and distress, and it leads to the heat of worldly existence. For those engaged in worldly affairs, it is said that they perish due to their constant attachment to material prosperity.
