14.33.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | sarvātiśayasāphalyātsarvaṃ sarvatra sarvadā | saṃbhavatyeva tasmāttvaṃ śubhodyogaṃ na saṃtyaja || 1 ||

Vasishtha said: since every act of supreme effort truly bears fruit, everything is possible, everywhere, always. So you must not give up good, honest effort.

24.33.2

mitrasvajanabandhūnāṃ nandinānandadāyinā | sarasīśānamāsādya mṛtyurapyupanirjitaḥ || 2 ||

Even death was conquered by one who delighted his friends, family, and relatives, after he reached Ishana at the lake.

sarvotkarṣeṇa saṃpannā devā api vimarditāḥ | dānavairdānavārthāḍhyairgajaiḥ padmākarā iva || 3 ||

Even the gods, who had every kind of excellence, were crushed by the demons rich in demonic power, just as lotus ponds are trampled by elephants.

maruttanṛpateryajñe saṃvartena maharṣiṇā | brahmaṇevāparaḥ sargo bhāvitaḥ sasurāsuraḥ || 4 ||

At King Marutta's sacrifice, the great sage Samvarta, like Brahma himself, brought into being another whole creation, complete with gods and demons.

mahātiśayayuktena viśvāmitreṇa vipratā | bhūyobhūyaḥ prayuktena duṣprāpā tapasārjitā || 5 ||

Vishvamitra, filled with the power of supreme effort, strove again and again, and through his penance he won brahmin-hood, hard as it was to attain.

piṣṭasekāmbu duṣprāpaṃ rasāyanavadaśnatā | durbhagenedṛśenāptaḥ kṣīroda upamanyunā || 6 ||

Upamanyu was unlucky, yet he ate water used to rinse ground flour, hard as even that was to get, as if it were the elixir of life, and so he obtained the ocean of milk.

trailokyamallāṃstṛṇavadaśnanviṣṇvalajādikān | bhaktyātiśayadārḍhyena kālaḥ śvetena kālitaḥ || 7 ||

Kala devours the great champions of the three worlds, Vishnu, Alaja, and the rest, as if they were mere straw, yet through the sheer firmness of his devotion, Shveta overcame Kala.

praṇayena yamaṃ jitvā kṛtvā vacanasaṅgamam | paralokādupānītaḥ sāvitryā satyavānpātiḥ || 8 ||

Through her love, Savitri won over Yama and made him give his word, and so she brought her husband Satyavan back from the world of the dead.

na so'styatiśayo loke yasyāsti na phalaṃ sphuṭam | bhavitavyaṃ vicāryāntaḥ sarvātiśayaśālinā || 9 ||

In this world, there is no supreme effort that fails to bring a clear result. So a person who has every excellence should think carefully within himself about what he must do.

ātmajñānam aśeṣāṇāṃ sukhaduḥkhadaśādṛśām | mūlakāṣakaraṃ tasmād bhāvyaṃ tatrātiśāyinā || 10 ||

Self-knowledge cuts off, at the very root, all the states of pleasure and pain that we see. So a person who wants to excel must cultivate exactly this.

nāśāyāpadgatārthinyā dṛṣṭyā dṛśyādidṛṣṭayaḥ | duḥkhādṛte nirābādhaṃ sukhaṃ kiṃ cidavāpyate || 11 ||

Ways of seeing that take the visible world as real go looking only for their own ruin. Apart from sorrow, do they ever bring any real, untroubled happiness?

aśamaḥ paramaṃ brahma śamaśca paramaṃ padam | yadyapyevaṃ tathāpyenaṃ prathamaṃ viddhi śaṃkaram || 12 ||

Restlessness, too, is the highest Brahman, and stillness is the highest state to reach. Even so, know stillness first as Shankara, the one who truly gives us good.

abhimānaṃ parityajya śamamāśritya śāśvatam | vicārya prajñayāryatvaṃ kuryātsajjanasevanam || 13 ||

Give up pride, take refuge in lasting stillness, think it through with wisdom about true nobility, and then serve good people.

na tapāṃsi na tīrthāni na śāstrāṇi jayanti ca | saṃsārasāgarottāre sajjanāsevanaṃ vinā || 14 ||

Neither penance, nor pilgrimage places, nor scriptures can carry a person across the ocean of this world, without the service of good people.

lobhamoharuṣāṃ yasya tanutānudinaṃ bhavet | yathāśāstraṃ viharati svasvakarmasu sajjanah || 15 ||

A good person is one whose greed, delusion, and anger grow thinner every day, and who lives according to scripture, doing his own proper work.

athātmaviduṣāṃ saṅgāttasya sādhoḥ pravartate | atyantābhāva evāsya yathā dṛśyasya dṛśyate || 16 ||

Then, by keeping company with those who know the Self, that good person comes to see that these faults do not exist at all, just as the visible world, too, is seen not to exist at all.

dṛśyātyantābhāvatastu paramevāvaśiṣyate | anyābhāvavaśādāśu jīvastatraiva līyate || 17 ||

But once the visible world is seen to be utterly nonexistent, only the Supreme remains. Because everything else stops existing, the individual soul quickly dissolves into that very Supreme.

nacotpannaṃ na caivāsīddṛśyaṃ na ca bhaviṣyati | vartamāne'pi naivāsti paramevāstyavedhitam || 18 ||

The visible world was never created, it never truly existed in the past, and it will not exist in the future. Even now, in the present, it does not truly exist. Only the Supreme exists, untouched and undivided.

evaṃ yuktisahasreṇa darśitaṃ dṛśyate'pi ca | sarvairevānubhūtaṃ ca darśayiṣyāmi cādhunā || 19 ||

In this way it has been shown through a thousand lines of reasoning, and it is also seen directly. Indeed, everyone experiences it. And now I will show it to you again.

tathedamamalaṃ śāntaṃ trijagatsaṃvidambaram | idaṃ tattvamatattvādi kuto'tra syātkathaṃ ca vā || 20 ||

So this is pure and at peace, the consciousness that is like the very sky holding the three worlds. This alone is the truth. How, or in what way, could unreality exist here?

ciccamatkurute cāru cañcalā'cañcalātmani | yattayaiava tadevedaṃ jagadityavabudhyate || 21 ||

Consciousness, though restless, plays out a beautiful display within what is itself unmoving. And that very play is what is understood as this world.

trailokyabhūyonubhavaścidādityāṃśumaṇḍalam | ko vā svāṃśumatorbhēdo nirvikalpaḥsa kathyatām || 22 ||

The whole repeated experience of the three worlds is the ring of rays around the sun of consciousness. So what real difference is there between the sun and its own rays? Tell me, there is none, it cannot really be divided.

234.33.23

svābhāvato'syāścidṛṣṭerye unmeṣaniṃeṣaṇe | jagadrūpānubhūtestāvetāvastamayodayau || 23 ||

By its own nature, this seeing of consciousness opens and closes, like an eye blinking, and these two, the opening and the closing, are the setting and the rising of what we experience as the world.

ahamartho'parijñātaḥ paramārthāmbare malam | parijñāto'hamarthastu paramātmāmbaraṃ bhavet || 24 ||

The sense of I, when not truly understood, is a stain on the sky of highest truth. But that same sense of I, when truly understood, becomes the very sky of the Supreme Self.

ahaṃbhāvaḥ parijñāto nāhaṃbhāvo bhavatyalam | ekatāmambunevāmbu yāti cinnabhasātmanā || 25 ||

Once the feeling of 'I' is fully known for what it is, it stops being a feeling of 'I' at all. It becomes one with the sky of awareness, the way water merges into water.

ahamādijagaddṛśyaṃ kila nāstyeva vastutaḥ | avaśyameva tattasmācchiṣyate'haṃvicārataḥ || 26 ||

The world we see, starting with the idea of 'I', does not really exist at all. Yet this very fact is bound to become clear once we look closely into 'I'.

bādhyate cāmaladhiyāmapiśāce piśācadhīḥśiśūnāṃ tāvadādhvāntaḥkaraṇānāṃ vicāraṇā || 27 ||

For a clear, pure mind, the false idea of a ghost where there is no ghost simply falls away. For a child whose mind is still clouded and in the dark, that same false idea stays until it is looked into closely.

cijjyotsnā yāvadevāntarahaṃkāraghanāvṛtā | vikāsayati no tāvatparamārthakumudvatīm || 28 ||

As long as the moonlight of awareness stays hidden behind the cloud of ego inside, it cannot make the pond of true reality bloom, the way moonlight opens the night lilies on a pond.

pramārjite'hamityasminpade svārthe svayaṃ vinā | narakasvargamokṣāditṛṣṇāyāḥ kalpanaiava kā || 29 ||

Once this very idea 'I' has been wiped away, and there is no one left to whom anything is 'my own', what craving can there be even to imagine, for hell, for heaven, for freedom, or for anything else?

hṛdi yāvadahaṃbhāvo vāridaḥ pravijṛmbhate | tāvadvikāsamāyāti tṛṣṇākuṭajamañjarī || 30 ||

As long as the rain cloud of the sense of 'I' keeps swelling in the heart, the kutaj tree of craving keeps bursting into bloom.

ākramya cetanāṃ nityamahaṃkārāmbude sthite | jāḍyameva sthitiṃ yāti na prakāśaḥ kadācana || 31 ||

When the cloud of ego takes hold of awareness and settles there for good, only dullness stays fixed in its place. The light of clarity never comes.

asannayamahaṃkāraḥ svayaṃ mithyā prakalpitaḥ | duḥkhāyaiva na harṣāya bālasaṃbhramayakṣavat || 32 ||

This sense of 'I' does not really exist. It is a false thing we have made up ourselves. It brings only suffering, never joy, like the made-up spirit a frightened, confused child imagines.

mudhaiva kalpito mohamahaṃbhāvaḥ prayacchati | anantasaṃsārakaraṃ dāmādiṣviva durmatau || 33 ||

This false idea of 'I', invented for nothing, produces delusion, the kind that causes endless rebirth. It did the very same thing to Dama and the others, in their folly.

ayaṃ so'hamiti sphārānmohādanyataraṃttamaḥ | anarthabhūtaṃ saṃsāre na bhūtaṃ na bhaviṣyati || 34 ||

'This', 'that', 'I', these ideas, born from a vast delusion, are nothing but a kind of darkness. This darkness causes all the harm in worldly life, though it has never truly existed and never will.

yatkiṃcididamāyāti sukhaduḥkhamalaṃ bhave | tadahaṃkāracakrasya pravikāro vijṛmbhate || 35 ||

Whatever pleasure or pain arises in this life, all of it is simply the wheel of ego churning and spinning further out.

ahaṃkārāṅkuraḥ kṛṣṭo hṛdayenāvaropitaḥ | sahasraśākhaṃ duśchedaṃ tasya saṃsṛtināśanam || 36 ||

The heart plants the sprout of ego and tends it, and it grows a thousand branches that are hard to cut down. But cutting it down is what destroys the cycle of rebirth.

ahaṃbhāvo'ṅkuro janma vṛkṣāṇāmakṣayātmanām | mamedamiti vistīrṇāsteṣāṃ śākhāḥ sahasraśaḥ || 37 ||

The sense of 'I' is the sprout from which endless trees are born, trees that never die. And 'this is mine', that is their thousand spreading branches.

karaṭāpātavisphoṭā bhāntyarthā vāsanādayaḥ | vicāryacāru-ravavat-taraṅgavara-paṅkivat || 38 ||

Sense objects, and the desires behind them, seem to burst out all at once, like the flow that bursts from an elephant's temples. But looked at closely, they are only like a pleasant sound fading away, like a row of waves passing by.

ahaṃbhāvanayā bhāti tvamahaṃbhāvavarjitaḥ | saṃsāracakravahanamātmanaḥ parirodhayā || 39 ||

It is the feeling of 'I' that makes the world appear at all. You yourself are free of that feeling. Hold that feeling back, and the wheel of rebirth stops turning for the self.

ahaṃbhāvatamo yāvajjanmāraṇye vijṛmbhate | tāvadetā vivalganti cintāmattāḥ piśācikāḥ || 40 ||

As long as the darkness of the sense of 'I' keeps spreading through the forest of birth after birth, these she-demons, drunk on worry, keep leaping and dancing through it.

ahaṃkārapiśācena gṛhīto yo narādhamaḥ | na śāstrāṇi na mantrāśca tasyābhāvasya siddhaye || 41 ||

When the demon of ego takes hold of the worst kind of man, neither scripture nor chant can free him from it.

śrīrāma uvāca | kenopāyena bhagavannahaṃkāro na vardhate | taṃ tvaṃ kathaya me brahmannsaṃsārabhayaśāntaye || 42 ||

Sri Rama said, Lord, by what method does the sense of 'I' not grow? Tell me that, wise one, so that my fear of this world of birth and death may be calmed.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | cinmātradarpaṇākāre nirmale svātmani sthite | iti bhāvānusaṃdhānādahaṃkāro na vardhate || 43 ||

Sri Vasishtha said, By steadily holding on to this thought, 'I rest in my own self, spotless, shaped like a mirror of pure awareness alone', the sense of 'I' does not grow.

mithyeyamindrajālaśrīḥ kiṃ me snehavirāgayoḥ | ityantarānusaṃdhānādahaṃkāro na jāyate || 44 ||

'All this glitter of the world is false, like a magician's illusion. What is it to me, whether I feel love for it or dislike for it?' Holding this thought inside, the sense of 'I' does not arise.

nāhamātmani no yasya dṛśyaśriya iti svayam | śāntena vyavahāreṇa nāhaṃkāraḥ pravardhate || 45 ||

'I am not this small self bound up in the world I see, and the glitter of the visible world does not belong to the true self either.' Holding this thought, and dealing with life calmly and quietly, the sense of 'I' does not grow.

ahaṃ hi jagadityantarheyādeyadṛśoḥ kṣaye | samatāyāṃ prasannāyāṃ nāhaṃbhāvaḥ pravardhate || 46 ||

'I myself am the world', holding this thought inside, once the very distinction between what to take and what to leave falls away, and a clear, calm evenness settles in, the sense of 'I' does not grow.

ahaṃ cijjagadityantarheyādeyadṛśoḥ kṣaye | samatāyāṃ prasannāyāṃ nāhaṃbhāvaḥ pravardhate || 47 ||

'I am awareness, and I am the world', holding this thought inside, once the very distinction between what to take and what to leave falls away, and a clear, calm evenness settles in, the sense of 'I' does not grow.

śrīrāma uvāca | kimākṛtirahaṃkāraḥ kathaṃ saṃtyajyate prabho | saśarīro'śarīraśca tyakte tasmiṃśca kiṃ bhavet || 48 ||

Sri Rama said: Lord, what does the ego look like, and how is it given up? Does it have a body or does it not, and once it is given up, what happens?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | trividho rāghavāstīha tvahaṃkāro jagattraye | dvau śreṣṭhāvitarastyājyaḥ śrṇu tvaṃ kathayāmi te || 49 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Rama, in these three worlds the ego is of three kinds. Two of them are good, and the third should be given up. Listen, I will tell you about them.

ahaṃ sarvamidaṃ viśvaṃ paramātmāhamacyutaḥ | nānyadastīti paramā vijñeyā sā hyahaṃkṛtiḥ || 50 ||

The thought 'I am this whole universe, I am the imperishable supreme self, there is nothing else at all' should be known as the highest kind of I-sense.

mokṣāyaiṣā na bandhāya jīvanmuktasya vidyate | sarvasmādvyatirikto'haṃ bālāgraśatakalpitaḥ || 51 ||

This sense of 'I' leads to liberation, not to bondage; it belongs to one who is liberated while still alive. The second kind of I-sense is this, 'I am separate from everything, as fine as the hundredth part of a hair's tip.'

iti yā saṃvideṣāsau dvitīyāhaṃkṛtiḥ śubhā | mokṣāyaiṣā na bandhāya jīvanmuktasya vidyate || 52 ||

This awareness is the second kind of I-sense, and it is a good one. It too leads to liberation, not to bondage, and it belongs to one who is liberated while still alive.

ahaṃkārābhidhā yā sā kalpyate natu vāstavī | pāṇipādādimātro'yamahamityeṣa niścayaḥ || 53 ||

The kind of ego that goes by that name in the ordinary sense is only imagined, not real. It is the fixed idea, 'I am just this, hands, feet, and the rest.'

ahaṃkārastṛtīyo'sau laukikastuccha eva saḥ | varjya eva durātmāsau śatrureva paraḥ smṛtaḥ || 54 ||

This third ego is the ordinary, worldly one, and it is a worthless thing. It must be given up; this evil-natured ego is known as the worst enemy.

anenābhihatō janturna bhūyaḥ parirōhati | ripuṇānēna balinā vividhādhipradāyinā || 55 ||

Struck down by this powerful enemy, which brings all kinds of suffering, a creature never rises again.

kaṣṭīkṛtamatirlokaḥ saṃkaṭeṣveva majjati | anayā durahaṅkṛtyā bhāvātsaṃsaktyā ciram || 56 ||

Because of this evil ego, which clings to the mind for a long time, people's minds fill up with distress, and they keep sinking into one trouble after another.

574.33.57

śiṣṭāhaṅkāravāñjanturbhagavānyāti muktatām | lokāhaṅkāravaddoṣavapurasminnirūpaṇaḥ || 57 ||

A being who holds the good kind of I-sense becomes glorious and reaches liberation. The one who holds the ordinary, worldly I-sense, as described here, has a body that is nothing but a heap of faults.

na deho'smīti nirṇīya varjanam mahatāṃ matam | prathamaṃ dvāvahaṅkārāvāṅgīkṛtyāntyalaukikau || 58 ||

The wise hold this view, decide firmly that 'I am not the body,' and give up the worldly ego. Do this by first accepting the other two kinds of I-sense, the highest one and the one that does not belong to the world.

prathamaṃ dvāvahaṅkārāvāṅgīkṛtyāntyalaukikau | tṛtīyāhaṅkṛtistyājyā laukikī duḥkhadāyinī || 59 ||

First accept those two kinds of I-sense, the highest one and the one apart from the world, and then give up the third, the ordinary worldly I-sense, which brings only suffering.

anayā durahaṅkṛtyā dāmavyālakaṭāḥ kila | tāṃ daśāṃ samanuprāptā yā kathāsvapi khedadā || 60 ||

It was this evil I-sense that brought Dama, Vyala, and Kata to that condition, a state so terrible that even hearing its story brings sorrow.

śrīrāma uvāca | tṛtīyāṃ laukikīmetāṃ tyaktvā cittādahaṃkṛtim | kiṃbhāvaḥ puruṣo brahmanprāpnuyādātmano hitam || 61 ||

Sri Rama said: Brahmin, once a person has given up this third, worldly I-sense from the mind, in what state of being does he then attain what is truly good for himself?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | eṣā tāvatparityājyā tyaktvaitāṃ duḥkhadāyinīm | yathā yathā pumāṃstiṣṭhetparameiti tathā tathā || 62 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: This ego must be given up first, the one that causes suffering. After giving it up, whatever way a person then lives, in that same way he reaches the highest state.

ahaṃkāradṛśāvete pūrvokte bhāvayanyadi | tiṣṭhedupaiti paramaṃ tatpadaṃ puruṣo'nagha || 63 ||

Sinless one, if a person keeps in mind these two kinds of I-sense spoken of earlier and lives by them, he attains that highest state.

atha te api saṃtyajya sarvāhaṃkṛtivarjitaḥ | saṃtiṣṭheta tathātyucchaiḥ padamevādhirohati || 64 ||

But if he gives up even those two and remains completely free of all I-sense, he rises higher still, all the way to that highest state.

sarvadā sarvayatnena laukikī duraḥkṛtiḥ | paramānandabodhāya varjanīyā'nayā dhiyā || 65 ||

So always, with every effort, one should give up the worldly, evil I-sense, keeping this understanding in mind, in order to reach supreme bliss.

śarīrāsthāmayāpuṇyadurahaṃkāravarjanam | atyantaparamaṃ śreya etadeva paraṃ padam || 66 ||

Giving up the evil ego bound to the body, to its condition, its sickness, its faults, this alone is the highest good; this itself is the supreme state.

bhāvādahaṃkṛtiṃ tyaktvā sthūlāmetāṃ hi laukikīm | tiṣṭhanvyavaharanvāpi na naraḥ prapatatyadhaḥ || 67 ||

Once a person has truly given up this coarse, worldly I-sense from his heart, he does not fall down, whether he sits quietly or goes about his daily business.

saṃśāntāhaṃkṛterjantorbho gā rogā mahāmate | na svadante sutṛptasya yathā prativiṣā rasāḥ || 68 ||

Wise one, for a person whose ego has fully quieted down, neither pleasures nor illnesses feel like anything anymore, just as food does not taste good to someone who is already full, as though it were poisoned.

bhogeṣvasvadamāneṣu puṃsaḥ śreyaḥ puro gatam | kṣīṇe'ndhakāre kiṃ nāma manaso'nyatpravartate || 69 ||

When pleasures stop tasting sweet to a person, the highest good stands right in front of him, just as, when darkness fades away, the mind has nothing else left to turn to.

ahaṃkārānusandhānavarjanādeva rāghava | pauruṣeṇa prayatnācca tīryate bhavasāgaraḥ || 70 ||

Rama, simply by giving up the habit of chasing after the ego, and through one's own effort, one crosses over the ocean of worldly existence.

nāhaṃ na tena mama kiṃcidapīti matvā sarvaṃ ca me sakalamapyahameva ceti | labdhāspadaṃ manasi saṃvidamevamīḍyāṃ nītvā sthitiṃ paramupaiti padaṃ mahātmā || 71 ||

Thinking, 'I do nothing, and nothing at all is mine because of it,' and also thinking, 'Everything, all of it, is truly myself,' holding this worthy understanding firmly settled in the mind, and so growing steady, the great soul reaches the highest state.
