श्रीराम उवाच | सतामप्यसतामेव बालयक्षपिशाचवत् | दामव्यालकटादीनां दुःखस्यान्तः कथं भवेत् || १ ||

śrīrāma uvāca | satāmapyasatāmeva bālayakṣapiśācavat | dāmavyālakaṭādīnāṃ duḥkhasyāntaḥ kathaṃ bhavet || 1 ||

English

Shri Rama said: How can the suffering of beings like ropes, snakes, and insects, whether they are good or bad, come to an end?

हिन्दी

श्री राम ने कहा: चाहे वे अच्छे हों या बुरे, रस्सियों, साँपों और कीड़ों जैसे जीवों का दुःख कैसे समाप्त हो सकता है?

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | दामव्यालकुटुम्बैस्तैस्तदैव यमकिङ्करैः | प्रार्थितेन यमेनोक्तमिदं श्रृणु रघूद्वह || २ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | dāmavyālakuṭumbais tais tadaiva yamakiṅkaraiḥ | prārthiten yamenoktam idaṃ śṛṇu raghūdvaha || 2 ||

English

Vasishtha said: Listen, O Raghava, to what was said by Yama, who was requested by those families of ropes, snakes, and insects, who are the servants of Yama.

हिन्दी

वसिष्ठ ने कहा: हे रघुवंशी, सुनो, जो यम ने कहा था, जिन्हें रस्सियों, साँपों और कीड़ों के परिवारों ने अनुरोध किया था, जो यम के सेवक हैं।

यदा वियोगमेष्यन्ति श्रोष्यन्ति च निजां कथाम् | दामादयस्तदा मुक्ता भविष्यन्तीत्यसंशयम् || ३ ||

yadā viyogameṣyanti śroṣyanti ca nijāṃ kathām | dāmādayastadā muktā bhaviṣyantītyasaṃśayam || 3 ||

English

When they will experience separation and hear their own story, then those ropes and others will undoubtedly be liberated.

हिन्दी

जब वे वियोग का अनुभव करेंगे और अपनी कहानी सुनेंगे, तब वे रस्सियाँ और अन्य निश्चित रूप से मुक्त होंगे।

श्रीराम उवाच | स्ववृत्तान्तमिमं कुत्र कदा कथयते कथम् | श्रोष्यन्ति भगवंस्ते वा वर्णयेदं यथाक्रमम् || ४ ||

śrīrāma uvāca | svavṛttāntamimaṃ kutra kadā kathayate katham | śroṣyanti bhagavaṃste vā varṇayedaṃ yathākramam || 4 ||

English

Shri Rama said: Where, when, and how will this story of mine be told? How will they hear it, O Lord? Please explain this in sequence.

हिन्दी

श्री राम ने कहा: मेरी यह कहानी कहाँ, कब और कैसे कही जाएगी? हे भगवन्, वे इसे कैसे सुनेंगे? कृपया इसे क्रमशः समझाएँ।

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | काश्मीरेषु महापद्मसरसीतीरपल्वले | भूयोभूयोऽनुभूयैव मत्स्ययोनिपरम्पराम् || ५ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | kāśmīreṣu mahāpadmasarasītīrapalvale | bhūyobhūyo’nubhūyaiva matsyayoni paramparām || 5 ||

English

Vasishtha said: In the marshy banks of the great lotus lake in Kashmir, repeatedly experiencing the succession of fish births.

हिन्दी

वसिष्ठ ने कहा: कश्मीर के महान कमल तालाब के दलदली किनारों पर, बार-बार मछली के जन्म की परंपरा का अनुभव करते हुए।

आलोलिताशया लोलाः कालेन लयमागताः | तत्रैव पद्मसरसि ते भविष्यन्ति सारसाः || ६ ||

ālolitāśayā lolāḥ kālena layamāgatāḥ | tatraiva padmasarasi te bhaviṣyanti sārasāḥ || 6 ||

English

Those who are agitated by the restless mind and have reached dissolution in time will become cranes in the same lotus pond.

हिन्दी

जिनका मन अस्थिर है और वे समय के साथ लय में चले गए हैं, वे उसी कमल सरोवर में सारस बनेंगे।

तत्र कह्लारमालासु सरोजपटलीषु च | शैवालवरवल्लीषु तरङ्गवलनासु च || ७ ||

tatra kahlāramālāsu sarojapaṭalīṣu ca | śaivālavaravallīṣu taraṅgavalanāsu ca || 7 ||

English

There, in the garlands of blue lotuses and the petals of lotuses, in the best algae and in the waves of the water,

वहाँ, नील कमल की मालाओं में और कमल के पंखुड़ियों में, श्रेष्ठ शैवाल और जल की लहरों में,

चलत्कुसुमदोलासु नीलोत्पललतासु च | सीकरौघाभ्रलेखासु शीतलावर्तवर्तिषु || ८ ||

calatkusumadolāsu nīlotpalalatāsu ca | sīkaraughābhralekhāsu śītalāvartavartiṣu || 8 ||

English

In the swinging flower pots and the creepers of blue lotuses, in the clouds of water sprinkles and in the cool whirlpools,

डोलते फूलों की डोलियों में और नील कमल की बेलों में, जल की बूँदों के बादलों में और ठंडे भँवरों में,

सारसाः सरसंभोगान्भुक्त्वा भुवनभूषणाः | विहृत्य सुचिरं कालमलमागतशुद्धयः || ९ ||

sārasāḥ sarasambhogānbhuktvā bhuvanabhūṣaṇāḥ | vihṛtya suciraṃ kālamalamāgataśuddhayaḥ || 9 ||

English

The cranes, having enjoyed the pleasures of the lotus pond, which is the ornament of the world, after spending a long time, will attain purity and weariness.

हिन्दी

सारस, जो कमल सरोवर के सुखों का आनंद ले चुके हैं, जो संसार का आभूषण है, लंबे समय बिताने के बाद, पवित्रता और थकान प्राप्त करेंगे।

ते वियुक्ता भविष्यन्ति मुक्तये लब्धबुद्धयः | रजःसत्त्वतमांसीव भेदं प्राप्य यदृच्छया || १० ||

te viyuktā bhaviṣyanti muktaye labdhabuddhayaḥ | rajaḥsattvatamāṃsīva bhedaṃ prāpya yadṛcchayā || 10 ||

English

Those who have attained enlightenment will become liberated, having obtained different qualities like rajas, sattva, and tamas by chance.

हिन्दी

जिन्होंने बुद्धि प्राप्त कर ली है, वे मुक्ति के लिए अलग-अलग गुणों जैसे रज, सत्त्व और तम को यदृच्छया प्राप्त करेंगे।

काश्मीरमण्डलस्यान्तर्नगरं नगशोभितम् | नाम्नाधिष्ठानमित्येव श्रीमत्तस्य भविष्यति || ११ ||

kāśmīramaṇḍalasyāntarnagaraṃ nagaśobhitam | nāmnādhiṣṭhānamityeva śrīmattasya bhaviṣyati || 11 ||

English

In the region of Kashmir, there will be a beautiful city adorned with mountains, known by the name Adhiṣṭhāna, which will be prosperous.

हिन्दी

कश्मीर के क्षेत्र में एक सुंदर नगर होगा जो पर्वतों से सुशोभित होगा, जिसका नाम अधिष्ठान होगा और यह समृद्ध होगा।

प्रद्युम्नशिखरं नाम तस्य मध्ये भविष्यति | श्रृङ्गं लघु सरोजस्य कोशचक्रमिवोदरे || १२ ||

pradyumnaśikharaṃ nāma tasya madhye bhaviṣyati | śr̥ṅgaṃ laghu sarojasya kośacakramivodare || 12 ||

English

In the middle of it, there will be a peak named Pradyumna, which will be like a small horn of a lotus in the center of a wheel.

हिन्दी

इसके मध्य में एक शिखर होगा जिसका नाम प्रद्युम्न होगा, जो कमल के छोटे सींग की तरह चक्र के मध्य में होगा।

तस्य मूर्ध्नि गिरेर्गेहं कश्चिद्राजा भविष्यति | अभ्रंकषमहाशालं श्रृङ्गे श्रृङ्गमिवापरम् || १३ ||

tasya mūrdhni girergehaṃ kaścidrājā bhaviṣyati | abhraṃkaṣamahāśālaṃ śr̥ṅge śr̥ṅgamivāparam || 13 ||

English

On the summit of that mountain, there will be a palace of a certain king, which will be like another peak, a great hall adorned with clouds.

हिन्दी

उस पर्वत के शिखर पर एक राजा का महल होगा, जो दूसरे शिखर की तरह होगा, एक बड़ा हॉल जो बादलों से सुशोभित होगा।

गृहस्येशानकोणेऽस्ति शिरोभित्तिव्रणोदरे | तस्यानिशमविश्रान्तवाताधूततृणान्तिके || १४ ||

gṛhasyeśānakoṇe'sti śirobhittivraṇodare | tasyāniśamaviśrāntavātādhūtatṛṇāntike || 14 ||

English

In the northeastern corner of the palace, there is a wall with a head-shaped mark, constantly exposed to the wind-blown grass.

हिन्दी

महल के ईशान कोण में एक दीवार है जिस पर सिर के आकार का निशान है, जो लगातार हवा से उड़े घास के संपर्क में है।

आलये दानवो व्यालः कलविङ्को भविष्यति | प्रथमाल्पश्रुतशास्त्र इवार्थरहितारवः || १५ ||

ālaye dānavo vyālaḥ kalaviṅko bhaviṣyati | prathamālpaśrutaśāstra iva'artharahitāravaḥ || 15 ||

English

In the temple, there will be a demon named Kalavinka, who will be like a beginner with little knowledge of the scriptures, devoid of meaningful sound.

हिन्दी

मंदिर में एक दानव होगा जिसका नाम कलविंक होगा, जो शास्त्रों के थोड़े ज्ञान वाले शुरुआती की तरह होगा, जिसकी आवाज में अर्थ नहीं होगा।

तस्मिन्नेव तदा काले तत्र राजा भविष्यति | श्रीयशस्करदेवाख्यः शक्रः स्वर्ग इवापरः || १६ ||

tasmineva tadā kāle tatra rājā bhaviṣyati | śrīyaśaskaradevākhyḥ śakraḥ svarga ivāparaḥ || 16 ||

English

At that time, in that place, there will be a king named Śrīyaśaskaradeva, who will be like another Indra in heaven.

हिन्दी

उस समय उस स्थान पर एक राजा होगा जिसका नाम श्रीयशस्करदेव होगा, जो स्वर्ग के इंद्र के समान होगा।

दानवो दामनामात्र मशकस्तस्य सद्मनि | भविष्यति बृहत्स्तम्भपृष्ठच्छिद्रे मृदुध्वनिः || १७ ||

dānavo dāmanāmātra maśakastasya sadmani | bhaviṣyati bṛhatstambhapṛṣṭhacchidre mṛdudhvaniḥ || 17 ||

English

A demon named Dāmana will be in his house, in the form of a mosquito, making a soft sound in the hole of a large pillar.

हिन्दी

एक दानव दामन नामक उसके घर में एक मच्छर के रूप में होगा, जो एक बड़े स्तंभ के छिद्र में कोमल आवाज करेगा।

अधिष्ठानाभिधे तस्मिन्नेवान्तर्नगरे तदा | रत्नावलीविहाराख्यो विहारोऽपि भविष्यति || १८ ||

adhiṣṭhānābhidhe tasminevanantarnagare tadā | ratnāvalīvihārākhyo vihāro'pi bhaviṣyati || 18 ||

English

In that very city, which is known as Adhiṣṭhāna, there will also be a monastery named Ratnāvalīvihāra.

हिन्दी

उसी नगर में, जिसे अधिष्ठान कहा जाता है, एक विहार भी होगा जिसका नाम रत्नावलीविहार होगा।

तस्मिंस्तद्भूमिपामात्यो नरसिंह इति श्रुतः | करामलकवद्दृष्टबन्धमोक्षो निवत्स्यति || १९ ||

tasmintadbhūmipāmātyo narasiṃha iti śrutaḥ | karāmalakavaddṛṣṭabandhamokṣo nivatsyati || 19 ||

English

In that kingdom, there will be a minister named Narasiṃha, who will be known for his ability to see through the bonds of karma like a ripe amla fruit.

हिन्दी

उस राज्य में, एक मंत्री होगा जिसका नाम नरसिंह होगा, जो कर्म के बंधनों को पके हुए आमला फल की तरह देखने में सक्षम होगा।

भविष्यति गृहे तस्य क्रीडनः क्रकरः खगः | कटो मायासुरो नाम कृतराजतपञ्जरः || २० ||

bhaviṣyati gṛhe tasya krīḍanaḥ krakaraḥ khagaḥ | kaṭo māyāsuro nāma kṛtarājatapañjaraḥ || 20 ||

English

In his house, there will be a playful parrot named Krakara, known as Kata, the magical demon, kept in a golden cage.

हिन्दी

उसके घर में, एक खेलने वाला तोता होगा जिसका नाम क्रकर होगा, जो कटा नामक चमत्कारिक दानव होगा, जिसे सोने के पिंजरे में रखा गया होगा।

स नृसिंहो नृपामात्यश्लोकैर्विरचितामिमाम् | दामव्यालकटादीनां कथयिष्यति सत्कथाम् || २१ ||

sa nṛsiṃho nṛpāmātyaślokairviracitāmimām | dāmavyālakaṭādīnāṃ kathayiṣyati satkathām || 21 ||

English

That Narasimha, with the verses composed by the ministers of the king, will narrate the virtuous story of Damavyala, Kata, and others.

हिन्दी

वह नरसिंह, राजा के मंत्रियों द्वारा रचित श्लोकों से, दामव्याल, कट आदि की पावन कथा कहेंगे।

सकटः क्रकरः श्रुत्वा तत्कथासंस्मृतात्मभूः | शान्तमित्थं महाशान्तं परं निर्वाणमेष्यति || २२ ||

sakaṭaḥ krakaraḥ śrutvā tatkathāsaṃsmṛtātmabhūḥ | śāntamitthaṃ mahāśāntaṃ paraṃ nirvāṇameṣyati || 22 ||

English

The cart-driver and the sawyer, having heard that story and being absorbed in its remembrance, will attain the supreme peace of nirvana.

हिन्दी

गाड़ीवान और आरागीर, उस कथा को सुनकर और उसके स्मरण में डूबे हुए, निर्वाण की परम शान्ति प्राप्त करेंगे।

प्रद्युम्नशिखरप्रान्तवास्तव्यः कलविङ्ककः | तत्रत्यैश्च कथां श्रुत्वा परं निर्वाणमेष्यति || २३ ||

pradyumnaśikhara prāntavāstavyaḥ kalaviṅkakaḥ | tatratyaiśca kathāṃ śrutvā paraṃ nirvāṇameṣyati || 23 ||

English

The starling living on the peak of Pradyumna will also hear the story there and attain the supreme nirvana.

हिन्दी

प्रद्युम्न शिखर पर रहने वाला मैना भी वहाँ कथा सुनकर परम निर्वाण प्राप्त करेगा।

राजमन्दिरदार्वन्तर्व्रणवास्तव्यतां गतः | मशकोऽपि प्रसङ्गेन श्रुत्वा शान्तिमुपैष्यति || २४ ||

rājamandiradārvantarvraṇavāstavyatāṃ gataḥ | maśako'pi prasaṅgena śrutvā śāntimupaiṣyati || 24 ||

English

The mosquito living in the wound inside the royal palace will also, by chance, hear the story and attain peace.

हिन्दी

राजमहल के अंदर घाव में रहने वाला मच्छर भी, संयोग से, कथा सुनकर शान्ति प्राप्त करेगा।

प्रद्युम्नश्रृङ्गाच्चटको मशको राजमन्दिरात् | विहारात्क्रकरश्चेति मोक्षमेष्यन्ति राघव || २५ ||

pradyumnaśṛṅgāccaṭako maśako rājamandirāt | vihārātkrakaraśceti mokṣameṣyanti rāghava || 25 ||

English

The sparrow from the peak of Pradyumna, the mosquito from the royal palace, and the sawyer from the garden will all attain liberation, O Raghava.

प्रद्युम्न शिखर से चटक, राजमहल से मच्छर, और उद्यान से आरागीर, सभी मुक्ति प्राप्त करेंगे, हे रघुवंशी।

एष ते कथितः सर्वो दामव्यालकथाक्रमः| मायैवमेव संसारशून्यैवात्यन्तभासुरा || २६ ||

eṣa te kathitaḥ sarvo dāmavyālakathākramaḥ| māyaivameva saṃsāraśūnyaivātyantabhāsurā || 26 ||

English

This entire story of the rope and the snake has been narrated to you| Thus, the world is indeed nothing but an illusion, extremely radiant and void

हिन्दी

यह सारी रस्सी और साँप की कथा तुम्हें सुनाई गई है| इस प्रकार, संसार वास्तव में माया ही है, अत्यंत चमकीला और शून्य

भ्रमयत्यपरिज्ञानान्मृगतृष्णाम्बुधीरिव| महतोऽपि पदादेवं नानाज्ञानवशादधः || २७ ||

bhramayatyaparijñānānmṛgatṛṣṇāmbudhīriva| mahato'pi padādevaṃ nānājñānavashādadhaḥ || 27 ||

English

It deludes those who lack knowledge, like a mirage deceives thirsty deer| Thus, from a great position, due to various kinds of ignorance, they fall down

Where is the state of being a moth in the wound of the inner chamber of the royal palace? Where is the state of being the moon and sun discs fallen by the mere slap of a hand?

प्रद्युम्न पर्वत पर घर की दीवार के घाव में पक्षी की स्थिति कहाँ है? फूल के खिलवाड़ से हिलाए जाने वाले मेरु पर्वत की स्थिति कहाँ है?

क्व वा श्रृङ्गे नृसिंहस्य गृहे क्रकरपोतता । चिदाकाशोऽहमित्येव रजसा रञ्जितप्रभः || ३१ ||

kva vā śr̥ṅge nṛsiṃhasya gṛhe krakarapotatā | cidākāśo'hamityeva rajasā rañjitaprabhaḥ || 31 ||

English

Where or on what peak does the abode of Narasimha exist, which is like a pot of clay? I am the sky of consciousness, stained with passion.

हिन्दी

कहाँ या किस पर्वत के शिखर पर नृसिंह का घर है, जो मिट्टी के घड़े के समान है? मैं चेतना का आकाश हूँ, जो रजोगुण से रंजित है।

स्वरूपमत्यजन्नेव विरूपमपि बुध्यते । स्वयैव वासनाभ्रान्त्या सत्ययेवाप्यसत्यया || ३२ ||

svarūpamatyajannēva virūpamapi budhyatē | svayaiava vāsanābhrāntyā satyayēvāpyasatyayā || 32 ||

English

Even abandoning one's own form, one perceives the deformed. By one's own delusion of desires, even the truth is perceived as false.

हिन्दी

अपने स्वरूप को छोड़कर भी, वह विकृत को देखता है। अपनी ही वासनाओं के भ्रम से, सत्य भी असत्य लगता है।

मृगतृष्णाम्बुबुद्ध्येव याति जन्तुरिवान्तरम् । तरन्ति ते भवाम्भोधिं स्वप्रवाहधियैव ये || ३३ ||

mṛgatṛṣṇāmbubuddhyēva yāti janturivāntaram | taranti tē bhavāmbhōdhiṁ svapravāhadhiyaiava yē || 33 ||

English

Like a deer mistaking a mirage for water, one wanders in the world. Those who cross the ocean of existence with their own understanding are wise.

हिन्दी

जैसे मृग मृगतृष्णा को जल समझकर भटकता है, वैसे ही जीव संसार में भटकता है। जो अपने बुद्धि से अस्तित्व के समुद्र को पार करते हैं, वे बुद्धिमान हैं।

शास्त्रेणासादितं दृश्यमिति निर्वाणसंस्थिताः । नानादुःखविकाराणि शुष्कतर्कमतानि ये || ३४ ||

śāstrēṇāsāditaṁ dṛśyamiti nirvāṇasaṁsthitāḥ | nānāduḥkhavikārāṇi śuṣkatarkamatāni yē || 34 ||

English

Those who are established in nirvana see the visible world as attained through scriptures. They consider various sufferings and dry logical arguments as mere illusions.

हिन्दी

जो निर्वाण में स्थित हैं, वे दृश्य जगत को शास्त्रों से प्राप्त मानते हैं। वे विभिन्न दुःखों और सूखे तर्कों को मात्र भ्रम मानते हैं।

यान्ति श्वभ्रं जलानीव स्वलाभं नाशयन्ति ते । स्वानुभूतिप्रसिद्धेन मार्गेणागमगामिना || ३५ ||

yānti śvabhraṁ jalānīva svalābhaṁ nāśayanti tē | svānubhūtiprasiddhena mārgeṇāgamagāminā || 35 ||

English

Those who follow the path of self-realization destroy their own gains, like water flowing into a pit. They proceed on the path known through their own experience.

हिन्दी

जो आत्म-साक्षात्कार के मार्ग पर चलते हैं, वे अपने लाभ को नष्ट करते हैं, जैसे जल कुंड में बहता है। वे अपने अनुभव से जाने मार्ग पर चलते हैं।

न विनाशो भवत्यङ्ग गच्छतां परमां गतिम् | इदं मे स्यादिदं मे स्यादितिबुद्धेर्महामते || ३६ ||

na vināśo bhavatyanga gacchatāṃ paramāṃ gatim | idaṃ me syādidaṃ me syāditi buddhermahāmate || 36 ||

English

There is no destruction for those who attain the supreme state | This is mine, this is mine, such is the thought of the foolish || 36 ||

हिन्दी

जो परम गति को प्राप्त होते हैं, उनका विनाश नहीं होता | यह मेरा है, यह मेरा है, ऐसा सोचना महामूर्खता है || ३६ ||

स्वेन दौर्भाग्यदैन्येन न भस्माप्युपतिष्ठते | वेत्ति नित्यमुदारात्मा त्रैलोक्यमपि यस्तृणम् || ३७ ||

svena daurbhāgyadainyena na bhasmāpyupatiṣṭhate | vetti nityamudārātmā trailokyamapi yastr̥ṇam || 37 ||

English

English

All calamities leave him like snakes leave their old skin | Within whom the splendor of goodness always shines || 38 ||

English

ये श्रयन्ते न ते यान्ति मोहान्ध्यस्य पुनर्वशम् | अवश्या वश्यतां यान्ति यान्ति सर्वापदः क्षयम् || ४१ ||

ye śrayante na te yānti mohāndhyasya punarvaśam | avaśyā vaśyatāṃ yānti yānti sarvāpadaḥ kṣayam || 41 ||

English

Those who seek refuge in the Lord do not fall again under the sway of delusion. They attain control over their senses and all their miseries come to an end.

English

The good deeds done by one's virtues become eternal. Those who are not satisfied with their qualities and are attached to what they hear are not virtuous.

Those who are addicted to truth and are virtuous are true humans, while others are like animals. Those whose fame shines like the moonlight are the essence of all beings.

teṣāṃ kṣīrasamudrāṇāṃ nūnaṃ mūrtau sthito hariḥ | bhuktaṃ bhoktavyamakhilaṃ dṛṣṭā draṣṭavyadṛṣṭayaḥ || 44 ||

English

For those who have realized the Lord, everything is attainable. All that is to be experienced has been experienced, and all that is to be seen has been seen.

Those who are not attached to worldly pleasures are saved from death. The accomplished beauties sing the praises of those whose fame is as pure as the moon.

Those who have died live on through the songs of the celestial pleasures. By embracing the supreme human effort, they attain the highest reward.

English

Success that is ripened over a long period of time bears fruitful results. It is free from sorrow, fear, fatigue, and pride.

For one who follows noble conduct, leads a pure life, seeks the fruits of worldly happiness and the scriptures, and is desirous of the stages of joy and sorrow, longevity, fame, virtues, and prosperity blossom like the Madhavi vine bearing good fruits.
