Sthiti, Chapter 29स्थिति प्रकरण · सर्ग २९

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच एवंप्रायाकुलारम्भैरसुरैरसुहारिभिः सहसा हृतसंरब्धैरारब्धः सुमहान् रणः ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca evaṃprāyākulārambhairasurairasuhāribhiḥ sahasā hṛtasaṃrabdhairārabdhaḥ sumahān raṇaḥ || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said, the demons were deadly, and they attacked again and again in this same confused way. Suddenly enraged because something had been snatched from them, they started a very great war.

श्री वशिष्ठ ने कहा, असुर बड़े खतरनाक थे, और वे बार-बार इसी उलझी हुई तरह से हमला करते थे। अचानक उनसे कुछ छीन लिया गया, इस बात पर भड़ककर उन्होंने एक बहुत बड़ा युद्ध छेड़ दिया।

माययाथ विवादेन सन्धिना विग्रहेण च पलायनेन धैर्येण च्छन्नगोपायनेन च ॥ २ ॥

māyayātha vivādena sandhinā vigraheṇa ca palāyanena dhairyena cchannagopāyena ca || 2 ||

By trickery, then by argument, by treaty, by open battle, by running away, by staying patient, and by hiding to protect themselves,

छल से, फिर बहस से, संधि से, खुले युद्ध से, भाग जाने से, धैर्य धारण करने से, और छिपकर अपनी रक्षा करने से,

कार्पण्येनास्त्रयुद्धेन स्वान्तर्धानैश्च भूरिशः धृतः स संगरो देवैस्त्रिंशद्वर्षाणि पञ्चकम् ॥ ३ ॥

kārpaṇyenāstrayuddhena svāntardhānaiśca bhūriśaḥ dhṛtaḥ sa saṃgaro devaisatriṃśadvṛṣāṇi pañcakam || 3 ||

by helpless pleading, by fighting with weapons, and often by making themselves vanish, the gods kept up that war for thirty five years.

दयनीय होकर गिड़गिड़ाने से, हथियारों से लड़कर, और बार-बार खुद को गायब कर लेने से, देवताओं ने उस युद्ध को पैंतीस वर्षों तक चलाए रखा।

वर्षाणि दिवसान्मासान्दशाष्टौ सप्त पञ्च च वर्षाणि पेतुर्वृक्षाग्निहेत्येकाशनिभूभृताम् ॥ ४ ॥

varṣāṇi divasānmāsāndaśāṣṭau sapta pañca ca varṣāṇi peturvṛkṣāgnihetyekāśanibhūbhṛtām || 4 ||

Eighteen, seven, and five, years, months, and days went by like this, vanishing the way a mountain's trees vanish in an instant when a single bolt of lightning sets them on fire.

अठारह, सात और पाँच, वर्ष, महीने और दिन इसी तरह बीत गए, जैसे किसी पहाड़ के पेड़ एक ही बिजली गिरने से लगी आग में पल भर में जलकर खाक हो जाते हैं।

एतावता तु कालेन दृढाभ्यासादहंकृतेः दामादयोऽहमित्यास्थां जगृहुर्ग्रस्तचेतसः ॥ ५ ॥

etāvatā tu kālena dṛḍhābhyāsādahaṃkṛteḥ dāmādayo'hamityāsthāṃ jagṛhurgraśtacetasaḥ || 5 ||

During all that time, by practicing the feeling of I again and again until it became firm, Dama and the others were overtaken in mind and settled into the belief I am.

इतने समय में, बार-बार मैं के भाव का अभ्यास करते करते, जब यह भाव पक्का हो गया, तो दाम और उसके साथियों का मन पूरी तरह उसी में डूब गया और उन्होंने मैं हूँ का दृढ़ विश्वास पकड़ लिया।

नैकट्यातिशयाद्यद्वद्दर्पणं बिम्बवद्भवेत् । अभ्यासातिशयात्तद्वत्ते साहंकारतां गताः ॥ ६ ॥

naikaṭyātiśayādyadvaddarpaṇaṃ bimbavadbhavet | abhyāsātiśayāttadvatte sāhaṃkāratāṃ gatāḥ || 6 ||

In the same way that something very close to a mirror makes the mirror look just like that thing's reflection, so with so much practice, they came to have a real ego.

जैसे कोई वस्तु आईने के बहुत पास होने पर आईना ठीक उसी की परछाईं जैसा दिखने लगता है, वैसे ही अत्यधिक अभ्यास से वे सचमुच अहंकारी हो गए।

यद्वद्दूरगतं वस्तु नादर्शे प्रतिबिम्बति । पदार्थवासना तद्वदनभ्यासान्न जायते ॥ ७ ॥

yadvaddūragataṃ vastu nādarśe pratibimbatī | padārthavāsanā tadvadanabhyāsānna jāyate || 7 ||

In the same way, just as a thing that is far away does not show its reflection in a mirror, a lasting impression about a thing does not form without practice.

उसी तरह, जैसे दूर पड़ी हुई चीज़ आईने में नहीं झलकती, वैसे ही किसी चीज़ का गहरा संस्कार बिना अभ्यास के नहीं बनता।

यदा दामादयो जाता अहंकारात्मवासनाः । तदा मे जीवितं मेऽर्थ इति दैन्यमुपागताः ॥ ८ ॥

yadā dāmādayo jātā ahaṃkārātmavāsanāḥ | tadā me jīvitaṃ me'rtha iti dainyamupāgatāḥ || 8 ||

When Dama and the others came to have this deep set feeling of ego and self, they fell into misery, thinking, this is my life, this is my wealth.

जब दाम और उसके साथियों में अहंकार और मैं का यह गहरा भाव बन गया, तो वे यह सोचकर दुखी हो गए कि यह मेरा जीवन है, यह मेरा धन है।

भववासनया ग्रस्ता मोहवासनया ततः । आशापाशनिबद्धास्ते ततः कृपणतां गताः ॥ ९ ॥

bhavavāsanayā grastā mohavāsanayā tataḥ | āśāpāśanibaddhāste tataḥ kṛpaṇatāṃ gatāḥ || 9 ||

Caught by the deep habit of thinking of worldly existence, and then by the deep habit of delusion, they were tied up in the rope of desire, and so they fell into complete wretchedness.

सांसारिक अस्तित्व की गहरी आदत में फँसकर, और फिर मोह की गहरी आदत में फँसकर, वे आशा की रस्सी से बँध गए, और इस तरह पूरी तरह दयनीय हो गए।

मुग्धेव ह्यनहंकारैर्ममत्वमुपकल्पितम् । रज्ज्वां भुजङ्गत्वमिव दामव्यालकटैस्ततः ॥ १० ॥

mugdheva hyanahaṃkārairmamatvamupakalpitam | rajjvāṃ bhujaṅgatvamiva dāmavyālakaṭaistataḥ || 10 ||

In just this deluded way, like mistaking a rope for a snake, Dama, Vyala, and Kata, who had no true self, built up in themselves a false sense of mine.

ठीक इसी भ्रम में, जैसे रस्सी को साँप समझ लिया जाए, दाम, व्याल और कट ने, जिनमें कोई असली अहंकार नहीं था, अपने भीतर मेरा पन का यह झूठा भाव बना लिया।

आपादमस्तको देहः कथं मे भवतु स्थिरः । ममेति तृष्णाकृपणा दीनतां ते समाययुः ॥ ११ ॥

āpādamastako dehaḥ kathaṃ me bhavatu sthiraḥ | mameti tṛṣṇākṛpaṇā dīnatāṃ te samāyayuḥ || 11 ||

How can this body of mine, from head to foot, stay unchanging forever, wretched with the craving of mine, they fell into deep misery.

यह मेरा शरीर, सिर से पैर तक, हमेशा के लिए स्थिर कैसे बना रहे, मेरा मेरा की इस लालसा में दयनीय होकर वे गहरे दुख में डूब गए।

स्थिरो भवतु मे देहः सुखायास्तु धनं मम । इति बद्धधियां तेषां धैर्यमन्तर्द्धिमाययौ ॥ १२ ॥

sthiro bhavatu me dehaḥ sukhāyāstu dhanaṃ mama | iti baddhadhiyāṃ teṣāṃ dhairyanantarddhimāyayau || 12 ||

Let my body stay unchanging, let my wealth bring me happiness, thinking this way, their minds tied down by such thoughts, their courage disappeared completely.

मेरा शरीर स्थिर बना रहे, मेरा धन मुझे सुख दे, ऐसा सोचते सोचते, उनका मन इसी विचार में बँध गया और उनका साहस पूरी तरह गायब हो गया।

सवासनत्वाद्वपुषामल्पसत्त्वात्सुरद्विषाम् । या तु प्रहारपरता मार्जितेवाशु साभवत् ॥ १३ ॥

savāsanatvādvapuṣāmalpasattvātsuradvīṣām | yā tu prahāraparatā mārjitevāśu sābhavat || 13 ||

Because their bodies had now taken on these deep habits, and because their strength had grown weak, the fierce eagerness these demons once had for striking in battle quickly disappeared, as if wiped clean away.

क्योंकि अब उनके शरीरों में ये गहरी आदतें बस गई थीं, और उनकी शक्ति कमज़ोर पड़ गई थी, इसलिए युद्ध में वार करने की जो तीव्र इच्छा इन असुरों में पहले थी, वह जल्दी ही मानो पूरी तरह मिट गई।

कथं सुरा जगत्यस्मिन्भवाम इति चिन्तया । विवशा दीनतां जग्मुः पद्मा इव निरम्भसः ॥ १४ ॥

kathaṃ surā jagatyasminbhavaām iti cintayā | vivaśā dīnatāṃ jagmuḥ padmā iva nirambhasaḥ || 14 ||

Thinking, how shall we demons go on living in this world, helpless, they fell into misery, the way lotuses become when they have no water.

हम असुर इस संसार में कैसे जीवित रहेंगे, ऐसा सोचकर, वे लाचार होकर वैसे ही दुखी हो गए जैसे बिना पानी के कमल होते हैं।

तेषां योषान्नपानेन स्वाहंकृतिमतां रतिः । बभूव भावभावस्था भीषणा भवभाजिनी ॥ १५ ॥

teṣāṃ yoṣānnapānena svāhaṃkṛtimatāṃ ratiḥ | babhūva bhāvabhāvasthā bhīṣaṇā bhavabhājinī || 15 ||

Now that they had this sense of ego, they took pleasure in women, food, and drink, a pleasure that stayed through every state of mind, a fearful pleasure bound up with the cycle of worldly life.

अब जब उनमें यह अहंकार आ गया था, तो वे स्त्रियों, भोजन और पेय में सुख लेने लगे, एक ऐसा सुख जो हर मनःस्थिति में बना रहा, एक डरावना सुख जो सांसारिक जीवन के चक्र से जुड़ा हुआ था।

अथ तस्मिन्रणे भीत्या सापेक्षत्वमुपाययुः । मत्तेभघनसंरब्धे वने हरिणका इव ॥ १६ ॥

atha tasminraṇe bhītyā sāpekṣatvamupāyayuḥ | mattebhaghanasaṃrabdhe vane hariṇakā iva || 16 ||

Then, in that battle, out of fear, they began to think only of saving themselves, like young deer in a forest crowded and stirred up by rutting elephants.

फिर उस युद्ध में, डर के मारे, वे सिर्फ अपनी जान बचाने की सोचने लगे, जैसे मस्त हाथियों से भरे और उत्तेजित जंगल में हिरन के बच्चे करते हैं।

मरिष्यामो मरिष्याम इति चिन्ताहताशयाः । मन्दं मन्दं किल भ्रेमुः कुपितैरावणे रणे ॥ १७ ॥

mariṣyāmo mariṣyāma iti cintāhatāśayāḥ | mandaṃ mandaṃ kila bhremuḥ kupitairāvaṇe raṇe || 17 ||

Thinking, we shall die, we shall die, their hearts crushed by fear, they moved about slowly, slowly indeed, in that battle where the elephant Airavata raged in fury.

हम मर जाएंगे, हम मर जाएंगे, यही सोचते हुए, डर से कुचले हुए मन के साथ, वे उस युद्ध में धीरे धीरे, सचमुच बहुत धीरे धीरे घूमते रहे, जहाँ हाथी ऐरावत क्रोध में उग्र हो रहा था।

शरीरैकार्थिनां तेषां भीतानां मरणादपि । अल्पसत्त्वतया मूर्घ्नि कृतमेव परैः पदम् ॥ १८ ॥

śarīraikārthināṃ teṣāṃ bhītānāṃ maraṇādapi | alpasattvatayā mūrghni kṛtameva paraiḥ padam || 18 ||

Those demons cared only about saving their own bodies. They were so afraid of dying, and so lacking in courage, that the enemy soldiers actually put a foot on their heads.

उन राक्षसों को बस अपनी जान बचाने की पड़ी थी। वे मरने से इतना डर गए थे और उनमें इतनी कम हिम्मत थी कि दुश्मनों ने सच में उनके सिर पर पैर रख दिया।

अथ प्रम्लानसत्त्वास्ते हन्तुमग्रगतं भटम् । न शेकुरिन्धने क्षीणे हविर्दग्धुमिवाग्नयः ॥ १९ ॥

atha pramlānasattvāste hantumagragataṃ bhaṭam | na śekurindhane kṣīṇe havirdagdhumivāgnayaḥ || 19 ||

Then their courage faded away completely. They could not even kill the one enemy warrior standing right in front of them, like a fire that cannot burn the offering once its fuel has run out.

फिर उनकी सारी हिम्मत खत्म हो गई। वे अपने सामने खड़े दुश्मन के एक अकेले योद्धा को भी नहीं मार पाए, बिलकुल वैसे जैसे आग में लकड़ी खत्म हो जाए तो वह हवन सामग्री को भी नहीं जला पाती।

विबुधानां प्रहरतां मशकत्वमुपागताः । क्षतविक्षतसंघातास्तस्थुः सामान्यसद्भटाः ॥ २० ॥

vibudhānāṃ praharatāṃ maśakatvamupāgatāḥ | kṣatavikṣatasaṃghātāstasthuḥ sāmānyasadbhaṭāḥ || 20 ||

To the gods who were attacking them, these demons seemed no bigger than mosquitoes. Wounded and torn all over their bodies, the ordinary foot soldiers just stood there.

उन पर हमला कर रहे देवताओं के लिए ये राक्षस मच्छर जैसे लग रहे थे। पूरे शरीर पर घाव खाए और फटे हुए, आम सिपाही बस वहीं खड़े रह गए।

बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन मरणाद्भीतचेतसः । दैत्या देवेषु वलगत्सु दुद्रुवुः समराजिरात् ॥ २१ ॥

bahunātra kimuktena maraṇādbhītacetasaḥ | daityā deveṣu valagatsu dudruvuḥ samarājirāt || 21 ||

Why say any more about it? Their minds were full of fear of death. When the gods charged forward, the demons ran away from the battlefield.

इस बारे में ज्यादा क्या कहें। उनके मन में बस मौत का डर भरा था। जब देवता आगे बढ़े, तो राक्षस युद्ध के मैदान से भाग गए।

तेषु द्रवत्सु भीतेषु सर्वतो दानवादिषु । दामव्यालकटाख्येषु विख्यातेषु सुरालये ॥ २२ ॥

teṣu dravatsu bhīteṣu sarvato dānavādiṣu | dāmavyālakaṭākhyeṣu vikhyāteṣu surālaye || 22 ||

On every side, the Danava demons were fleeing in fear, among them the famous ones named Dama, Vyala, and Kata, well known in the home of the gods.

हर तरफ दानव राक्षस डर के मारे भाग रहे थे, उनमें दाम, व्याल और कट नाम के मशहूर राक्षस भी थे, जो देवताओं के घर में जाने-माने थे।

तद्दैत्यसैन्यं न्यपतद्विद्रुतं खादितस्ततः । कल्पान्तपवनोद्भूतं ताराजालमिवाभितः ॥ २३ ॥

taddaityasainyaṃ nyapatadvidrutaṃ khāditastataḥ | kalpāntapavanodbhūtaṃ tārājālamivābhitaḥ || 23 ||

That whole army of demons fell apart, routed and scattered everywhere, like a shower of stars stirred up by the wind at the end of the world.

राक्षसों की वह पूरी सेना हार कर बिखर गई और हर तरफ गिर पड़ी, बिलकुल वैसे जैसे प्रलय की आंधी में तारे बिखर कर गिरते हैं।

अमराचलकुञ्जेषु शिखराणां शिखासु च । तटेषु वारिराशीनां पयोदपटलेषु च ॥ २४ ॥

amarācalakuñjeṣu śikharāṇāṃ śikhāsu ca | taṭeṣu vārirāśīnāṃ payodapaṭaleṣu ca || 24 ||

They fell in the groves of the Mountain of the Gods, on the very tips of mountain peaks, on the shores of the oceans, and among banks of clouds.

वे देवताओं के पर्वत के बागों में, पहाड़ों की चोटियों की नोक पर, समुद्रों के किनारों पर, और बादलों के झुंड में जा गिरे।

सागरावर्तगर्तेषु श्वभ्रेषूद्यत्सरित्सु च । जङ्गलेषु दिगन्तेषु ज्वलत्सु विपिनेषु च ॥ २५ ॥

sāgarāvartagarteṣu śvabhreṣūdyatsaritsu ca | jaṅgaleṣu diganteṣu jvalatsu vipineṣu ca || 25 ||

They fell into the hollows of the ocean's whirlpools, into caves and pits, into rivers that were swelling, into desert lands at the far edges of the world, and into blazing forests.

वे समुद्र के भंवरों के गड्ढों में, गुफाओं और खड्डों में, उफनती नदियों में, दुनिया के छोर के रेगिस्तानों में, और धधकते जंगलों में जा गिरे।

तद्वाणोच्छिन्नदेशेषु ग्रामेषु नगरेषु च । अटवीषूग्रपक्षासु मरुभूमिदवाग्निषु ॥ २६ ॥

tadvāṇocchinnadeśeṣu grāmeṣu nagareṣu ca | aṭavīṣūgrapakṣāsu marubhūmidavāgniṣu || 26 ||

They fell in the lands torn apart by that arrow, in villages and cities, in wild rugged forests, and in the wildfires of the desert.

वे उस बाण से उजड़ी हुई जगहों में, गांवों और शहरों में, घने जंगली इलाकों में, और रेगिस्तान की दावानल में जा गिरे।

लोकालोकाचलान्तेषु पर्वतेषु ह्रदेषु च । आन्ध्रद्वविडकाश्मीरपारसीकपुरेषु च ॥ २७ ॥

lokālokācalānteṣu parvateṣu hradeṣu ca | āndhradvaviḍakāśmīrapārasīkapureṣu ca || 27 ||

They fell at the edges of Mount Lokaloka, on mountains and in lakes, and in the cities of Andhra, Dravida, Kashmir, and Persia.

वे लोकालोक पर्वत की सीमाओं पर, पहाड़ों और झीलों में, और आंध्र, द्रविड़, कश्मीर और ईरान के शहरों में जा गिरे।

नानाम्भोधितरङ्गासु गङ्गाजलघटासु च । द्वीपान्तरेषु जालेषु जम्बूखण्डलतासु च ॥ २८ ॥

nānāmbhodhitaraṅgāsu gaṅgājalaghaṭāsu ca | dvīpāntareṣu jāleṣu jambūkhaṇḍalatāsu ca || 28 ||

They fell in the waves of many oceans, in the flooding waters of the Ganga, on distant islands, in tangled thickets, and among the vines of Jambu island.

वे कई समुद्रों की लहरों में, गंगा के उफनते पानी में, दूर के टापुओं पर, घनी झाड़ियों में, और जम्बू द्वीप की बेलों के बीच जा गिरे।

सर्वतः पर्वताकाराः पतितास्ते सुरारयः । विस्फोटिताङ्गचरणा विभिन्नकरबाहवः ॥ २९ ॥

sarvataḥ parvatākārāḥ patitāste surārayaḥ | visphoṭitāṅgacaraṇā vibhinnakarabāhavaḥ || 29 ||

Everywhere those enemies of the gods lay fallen, huge as mountains, their limbs and feet burst open, their hands and arms torn apart.

हर जगह देवताओं के वे दुश्मन गिरे पड़े थे, पहाड़ों जितने विशाल, उनके अंग और पैर फट गए थे, उनके हाथ और भुजाएं टूट कर अलग हो गई थीं।

शाखालग्नान्त्रतन्त्रीका मुक्तरक्तभरच्छटाः । व्यस्तशेखरमूर्धानो निष्क्रान्ताः कुपितेक्षणाः ॥ ३० ॥

śākhālagna antratantrikā muktaraktabharacchatāḥ | vyastashekharamūrdhāno niṣkrāntāḥ kupitekṣaṇāḥ || 30 ||

Their guts hung from tree branches like torn cords, streams of blood poured out of them, the crowns of their heads were knocked crooked. They had breathed their last, yet their eyes still burned with rage.

उनकी अंतड़ियां पेड़ों की डालियों पर टूटी हुई रस्सियों की तरह लटक रही थीं, उनके शरीर से खून की धारें बह रही थीं, उनके सिर के मुकुट टेढ़े हो गए थे। उनकी सांस निकल चुकी थी, फिर भी उनकी आंखों में गुस्सा भरा हुआ था।

सायुधा बलमायेषुच्छिन्नकङ्कटहेतयः । दूरापातविपर्यस्तपतन्नानायुधांशुकाः ॥ ३१ ॥

sāyudhā balamāyeṣuccchinnakaṅkaṭahetayaḥ | dūrāpātaviparyastapatannānāyudhāṃśukāḥ || 31 ||

Though they still held their weapons, arrows charged with powerful magic cut through their armor and their weapons; their many weapons and banners, hurled from afar, came crashing down scattered and turned upside down.

हथियार हाथ में होते हुए भी, बड़ी माया से भरे बाणों ने उनके कवच और हथियार काट डाले; दूर से फेंके गए उनके तरह-तरह के हथियार और झंडे बिखर कर उलटे-पुलटे गिर पड़े।

कण्ठलम्बिशिरस्त्राणचटत्कारोग्रभीतयः । शिखाशतशिलाप्रोता देहभागविलम्बिनः ॥ ३२ ॥

kaṇṭhalambiśirastrāṇacaṭatkārograbhītayaḥ | śikhāśataśilāprotā dehabhāgavilambinaḥ || 32 ||

Their helmets hung loose from their necks, clattering with a fierce, dreadful sound. Pierced through by hundreds of jagged rocks, parts of their bodies hung dangling.

उनके हेलमेट गले से लटक कर तेज, डरावनी आवाज़ के साथ खड़खड़ा रहे थे। सैकड़ों नुकीले पत्थरों से शरीर छिदे हुए थे, और उनके शरीर के टुकड़े लटक रहे थे।

शाल्मल्युग्रदृढापातकटत्कण्टकसंकटाः । सुशिलाफलकास्फालशतधाशीर्णमस्तकाः ॥ ३३ ॥

śālmalyugradṛḍhāpātakaṭatkaṇṭakasaṃkaṭāḥ | suśilāphalakāsphālaśatadhāśīrṇamastakāḥ || 33 ||

They were caught among the sharp, unyielding thorns of the shalmali tree as they crashed down heavily, and their heads were smashed into a hundred pieces against hard flat rocks.

भारी होकर गिरते हुए वे शाल्मली पेड़ के तीखे, सख्त कांटों में फंस गए, और उनके सिर सख्त चट्टानों से टकरा कर सौ टुकड़ों में फूट गए।

सर्वं एव सकलायुधशस्त्रपातमात्रसमनन्तरमेव । दिक्षु नाशमगमन्नसुरेन्द्राः पांसवोऽम्बुदनिधौ पयसीव ॥ ३४ ॥

sarvaṃ eva sakalāyudhaśastrapātamātrasamanantaram eva | dikṣu nāśam agamannasurendrāḥ pāṃsavo'mbudanidhau payasīva || 34 ||

The instant every weapon struck home, all the demon chiefs, in every direction, were completely destroyed, like specks of dust vanishing into the waters of massed rain clouds.

जैसे ही सारे हथियारों की मार पड़ी, सभी राक्षस सरदार, हर दिशा में, पूरी तरह नष्ट हो गए, बिलकुल वैसे जैसे धूल के कण घने बादलों के पानी में गुम हो जाते हैं।
