śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca evaṃprāyākulārambhairasurairasuhāribhiḥ sahasā hṛtasaṃrabdhairārabdhaḥ sumahān raṇaḥ || 1 ||
Shri Vasishtha said: Thus, the great battle was initiated by the demons who were suddenly filled with anger and were very hostile.
श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा इस प्रकार से असुरों द्वारा जो अचानक क्रोध से भर गए थे और बहुत शत्रुतापूर्ण थे महान् युद्ध आरम्भ हुआ।
माययाथ विवादेन सन्धिना विग्रहेण च पलायनेन धैर्येण च्छन्नगोपायनेन च || २ ||
māyayātha vivādena sandhinā vigraheṇa ca palāyanena dhairyena cchannagopāyena ca || 2 ||
With illusion, debate, peace, conflict, escape, courage, and concealed strategies, the battle was sustained.
माया, विवाद, संधि, विग्रह, पलायन, धैर्य और छिपे हुए रणनीतियों के साथ युद्ध जारी रहा।
कार्पण्येनास्त्रयुद्धेन स्वान्तर्धानैश्च भूरिशः धृतः स संगरो देवैस्त्रिंशद्वर्षाणि पञ्चकम् || ३ ||
kārpaṇyenāstrayuddhena svāntardhānaiśca bhūriśaḥ dhṛtaḥ sa saṃgaro devaisatriṃśadvṛṣāṇi pañcakam || 3 ||
With cowardice, weapon battles, and frequent disappearances, that battle was sustained by the gods for thirty-five years.
कायरता, अस्त्र युद्धों, और अक्सर अदृश्यता के साथ, वह युद्ध देवताओं द्वारा पैंतीस वर्षों तक जारी रखा गया।

varṣāṇi divasānmāsāndaśāṣṭau sapta pañca ca varṣāṇi peturvṛkṣāgnihetyekāśanibhūbhṛtām || 4 ||
Years, days, and months, ten, eight, seven, and five, the years fell like lightning striking the earth.
वर्ष, दिन, और महीने, दस, आठ, सात, और पाँच, वर्ष बिजली की तरह धरती पर गिरे।
एतावता तु कालेन दृढाभ्यासादहंकृतेः दामादयोऽहमित्यास्थां जगृहुर्ग्रस्तचेतसः || ५ ||
etāvatā tu kālena dṛḍhābhyāsādahaṃkṛteḥ dāmādayo'hamityāsthāṃ jagṛhurgraśtacetasaḥ || 5 ||
By this time, due to the firm practice of ego, the demons, with their minds consumed, took the stance of 'I am the doer'.
इस समय तक, अहंकार के दृढ़ अभ्यास के कारण, असुरों ने, जिनके मन ग्रसित हो गए थे, 'मैं कर्ता हूँ' की स्थिति अपना ली।
नैकट्यातिशयाद्यद्वद्दर्पणं बिम्बवद्भवेत् | अभ्यासातिशयात्तद्वत्ते साहंकारतां गताः || ६ ||
naikaṭyātiśayādyadvaddarpaṇaṃ bimbavadbhavet | abhyāsātiśayāttadvatte sāhaṃkāratāṃ gatāḥ || 6 ||
Just as a mirror becomes like the image due to excessive proximity, similarly, due to excessive practice, they have attained the state of egoism.
जैसे अत्यधिक निकटता से दर्पण चित्र के समान हो जाता है, वैसे ही अत्यधिक अभ्यास से वे अहंकार की स्थिति में पहुंच गए हैं।
यद्वद्दूरगतं वस्तु नादर्शे प्रतिबिम्बति | पदार्थवासना तद्वदनभ्यासान्न जायते || ७ ||
yadvaddūragataṃ vastu nādarśe pratibimbatī | padārthavāsanā tadvadanabhyāsānna jāyate || 7 ||
Just as a distant object does not reflect in a mirror, similarly, the desire for objects does not arise without practice.
जैसे दूर का वस्तु दर्पण में प्रतिबिम्बित नहीं होता, वैसे ही अभ्यास के बिना पदार्थों की वासना नहीं उत्पन्न होती।
यदा दामादयो जाता अहंकारात्मवासनाः | तदा मे जीवितं मेऽर्थ इति दैन्यमुपागताः || ८ ||
yadā dāmādayo jātā ahaṃkārātmavāsanāḥ | tadā me jīvitaṃ me'rtha iti dainyamupāgatāḥ || 8 ||
When desires like wealth arise from the ego, then they think, 'My life is for my sake,' and thus they become miserable.
जब धन जैसी इच्छाएं अहंकार से उत्पन्न होती हैं, तब वे सोचते हैं, 'मेरा जीवन मेरे लिए है,' और इस तरह वे दुःखी हो जाते हैं।
भववासनया ग्रस्ता मोहवासनया ततः | आशापाशनिबद्धास्ते ततः कृपणतां गताः || ९ ||
bhavavāsanayā grastā mohavāsanayā tataḥ | āśāpāśanibaddhāste tataḥ kṛpaṇatāṃ gatāḥ || 9 ||
Overwhelmed by worldly desires and delusions, they are bound by the chains of hope and thus become miserable.
संसारिक इच्छाओं और भ्रमों से ग्रस्त होकर, वे आशा की बेड़ियों से बंधे हुए हैं और इस तरह दुःखी हो जाते हैं।
मुग्धेव ह्यनहंकारैर्ममत्वमुपकल्पितम् | रज्ज्वां भुजङ्गत्वमिव दामव्यालकटैस्ततः || १० ||
mugdheva hyanahaṃkārairmamatvamupakalpitam | rajjvāṃ bhujaṅgatvamiva dāmavyālakaṭaistataḥ || 10 ||
Like an ignorant person who imagines a rope to be a snake, they, without ego, imagine the sense of 'mine' with various attachments.
जैसे एक अज्ञानी व्यक्ति रस्सी को सांप समझता है, वैसे ही वे अहंकार के बिना विभिन्न आसक्तियों के साथ 'मेरा' की भावना कल्पना करते हैं।
आपादमस्तको देहः कथं मे भवतु स्थिरः | ममेति तृष्णाकृपणा दीनतां ते समाययुः || ११ ||
āpādamastako dehaḥ kathaṃ me bhavatu sthiraḥ | mameti tṛṣṇākṛpaṇā dīnatāṃ te samāyayuḥ || 11 ||
How can my body from head to toe become stable? The pitiful craving for 'mine' brought them to a miserable state.
मेरा शरीर सिर से पैर तक कैसे स्थिर हो सकता है? 'मेरा' कहने की लालसा उन्हें दयनीय स्थिति में ले आई।
स्थिरो भवतु मे देहः सुखायास्तु धनं मम | इति बद्धधियां तेषां धैर्यमन्तर्द्धिमाययौ || १२ ||
sthiro bhavatu me dehaḥ sukhāyāstu dhanaṃ mama | iti baddhadhiyāṃ teṣāṃ dhairyanantarddhimāyayau || 12 ||
May my body become stable and may wealth come to me for happiness. Thus, their minds were bound, and their courage vanished.
मेरा शरीर स्थिर हो और धन मेरे लिए सुख के लिए आए। इस प्रकार, उनके मन बंधे हुए थे, और उनका साहस समाप्त हो गया।
सवासनत्वाद्वपुषामल्पसत्त्वात्सुरद्विषाम् | या तु प्रहारपरता मार्जितेवाशु साभवत् || १३ ||
savāsanatvādvapuṣāmalpasattvātsuradvīṣām | yā tu prahāraparatā mārjitevāśu sābhavat || 13 ||
Due to the inherent nature and weak existence of the bodies of the enemies of the gods, their tendency to attack was quickly wiped out.
देवों के शत्रुओं के शरीरों की सहज प्रवृत्ति और कमजोर अस्तित्व के कारण, उनकी आक्रामकता तुरंत मिट गई।
कथं सुरा जगत्यस्मिन्भवाम इति चिन्तया | विवशा दीनतां जग्मुः पद्मा इव निरम्भसः || १४ ||
kathaṃ surā jagatyasminbhavaām iti cintayā | vivaśā dīnatāṃ jagmuḥ padmā iva nirambhasaḥ || 14 ||
Thinking, 'How can we be gods in this world?' they became helpless and fell into a miserable state, like lotuses without water.
सोचते हुए, 'हम इस दुनिया में देवता कैसे हो सकते हैं?' वे बेबस हो गए और पानी के बिना कमल की तरह दयनीय स्थिति में गिर गए।
तेषां योषान्नपानेन स्वाहंकृतिमतां रतिः | बभूव भावभावस्था भीषणा भवभाजिनी || १५ ||
teṣāṃ yoṣānnapānena svāhaṃkṛtimatāṃ ratiḥ | babhūva bhāvabhāvasthā bhīṣaṇā bhavabhājinī || 15 ||
Their attachment to the egoistic nature of women and drinks became a terrifying state of being, leading to worldly entanglements.
उनका स्त्रियों और पेय पदार्थों के अहंकारी स्वभाव से आसक्ति एक भयानक अस्तित्व की स्थिति बन गई, जो संसारिक उलझनों की ओर ले गई।
अथ तस्मिन्रणे भीत्या सापेक्षत्वमुपाययुः | मत्तेभघनसंरब्धे वने हरिणका इव || १६ ||
atha tasminraṇe bhītyā sāpekṣatvamupāyayuḥ | mattebhaghanasaṃrabdhe vane hariṇakā iva || 16 ||
Then, in that battle, out of fear, they resorted to dependence, like deer in a forest filled with intoxicated elephants.
फिर, उस युद्ध में, भय से, वे आश्रित हो गए, जैसे मदमस्त हाथियों से भरे वन में हिरण।
मरिष्यामो मरिष्याम इति चिन्ताहताशयाः | मन्दं मन्दं किल भ्रेमुः कुपितैरावणे रणे || १७ ||
mariṣyāmo mariṣyāma iti cintāhatāśayāḥ | mandaṃ mandaṃ kila bhremuḥ kupitairāvaṇe raṇe || 17 ||
Thinking, 'We will die, we will die,' their minds struck with anxiety, they wandered slowly, slowly, indeed, in the battle with the enraged Ravana.
सोचते हुए, 'हम मरेंगे, हम मरेंगे,' उनके मन चिंता से भर गए, वे धीरे-धीरे भटकते रहे, indeed, क्रोधित रावण के साथ युद्ध में।
शरीरैकार्थिनां तेषां भीतानां मरणादपि | अल्पसत्त्वतया मूर्घ्नि कृतमेव परैः पदम् || १८ ||
śarīraikārthināṃ teṣāṃ bhītānāṃ maraṇādapi | alpasattvatayā mūrghni kṛtameva paraiḥ padam || 18 ||
For those who were afraid and cared only for their bodies, even more than death, due to their lack of courage, they were indeed made to retreat by the enemies.
जो डरे हुए थे और जिनका ध्यान केवल अपने शरीर पर था, मृत्यु से भी अधिक, उनके साहस की कमी के कारण, शत्रुओं ने उन्हें indeed पीछे हटने पर मजबूर कर दिया।
अथ प्रम्लानसत्त्वास्ते हन्तुमग्रगतं भटम् | न शेकुरिन्धने क्षीणे हविर्दग्धुमिवाग्नयः || १९ ||
atha pramlānasattvāste hantumagragataṃ bhaṭam | na śekurindhane kṣīṇe havirdagdhumivāgnayaḥ || 19 ||
Then, with their spirits exhausted, they were unable to kill the foremost warrior, like fires unable to burn offerings when the fuel is depleted.
फिर, उनके साहस के खत्म हो जाने पर, वे अग्रणी योद्धा को मारने में असमर्थ थे, जैसे ईंधन खत्म हो जाने पर अग्नि आहुति को जलाने में असमर्थ होती है।
विबुधानां प्रहरतां मशकत्वमुपागताः | क्षतविक्षतसंघातास्तस्थुः सामान्यसद्भटाः || २० ||
vibudhānāṃ praharatāṃ maśakatvamupāgatāḥ | kṣatavikṣatasaṃghātāstasthuḥ sāmānyasadbhaṭāḥ || 20 ||
Having attained the state of mosquitoes among the striking celestials, wounded and severely injured, they stood as ordinary soldiers.
दिव्य योद्धाओं में मच्छरों की स्थिति प्राप्त करने के बाद, घायल और गंभीर रूप से चोटिल, वे सामान्य सैनिकों के रूप में खड़े हुए।
बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन मरणाद्भीतचेतसः | दैत्या देवेषु वलगत्सु दुद्रुवुः समराजिरात् || २१ ||
bahunātra kimuktena maraṇādbhītacetasaḥ | daityā deveṣu valagatsu dudruvuḥ samarājirāt || 21 ||
What more can be said here? The demons, terrified of death, fled from the battlefield when the gods gained strength.
इसमें और क्या कहना है? मृत्यु से भयभीत होकर असुर युद्ध से भाग गए जब देवताओं ने बल प्राप्त किया।
तेषु द्रवत्सु भीतेषु सर्वतो दानवादिषु | दामव्यालकटाख्येषु विख्यातेषु सुरालये || २२ ||
teṣu dravatsu bhīteṣu sarvato dānavādiṣu | dāmavyālakaṭākhyeṣu vikhyāteṣu surālaye || 22 ||
As those terrified demons fled in all directions, they were known by various names such as Dāmavyālakaṭā in the abode of the gods.
जब वे भयभीत असुर सभी दिशाओं में भागे, तो उन्हें देवताओं के निवास स्थान में विभिन्न नामों से जाना जाता था जैसे कि दामव्यालकटा।
तद्दैत्यसैन्यं न्यपतद्विद्रुतं खादितस्ततः | कल्पान्तपवनोद्भूतं ताराजालमिवाभितः || २३ ||
taddaityasainyaṃ nyapatadvidrutaṃ khāditastataḥ | kalpāntapavanodbhūtaṃ tārājālamivābhitaḥ || 23 ||
That demon army fell, scattered and devoured, like a net of stars scattered by the wind at the end of the world.
वह असुर सेना बिखर कर गिर पड़ी, जैसे प्रलय के समय हवा से बिखरे हुए तारों का जाल।
अमराचलकुञ्जेषु शिखराणां शिखासु च | तटेषु वारिराशीनां पयोदपटलेषु च || २४ ||
amarācalakuñjeṣu śikharāṇāṃ śikhāsu ca | taṭeṣu vārirāśīnāṃ payodapaṭaleṣu ca || 24 ||
In the caves of the mountains of the immortals, on the peaks of the mountains, on the shores of the oceans, and in the clouds.
अमरों के पर्वतों की गुफाओं में, पर्वतों की चोटियों पर, समुद्रों के किनारों पर, और बादलों में।
सागरावर्तगर्तेषु श्वभ्रेषूद्यत्सरित्सु च | जङ्गलेषु दिगन्तेषु ज्वलत्सु विपिनेषु च || २५ ||
sāgarāvartagarteṣu śvabhreṣūdyatsaritsu ca | jaṅgaleṣu diganteṣu jvalatsu vipineṣu ca || 25 ||
In the whirlpools of the ocean, in the pits, in the flowing rivers, in the forests, at the ends of the directions, and in the blazing forests.
समुद्र के भंवरों में, गड्ढों में, बहती हुई नदियों में, जंगलों में, दिशाओं के अंत में, और जलते हुए जंगलों में।
तद्वाणोच्छिन्नदेशेषु ग्रामेषु नगरेषु च | अटवीषूग्रपक्षासु मरुभूमिदवाग्निषु || २६ ||
tadvāṇocchinnadeśeṣu grāmeṣu nagareṣu ca | aṭavīṣūgrapakṣāsu marubhūmidavāgniṣu || 26 ||
In the regions pierced by your arrows, in villages, cities, forests with fierce birds, deserts, forests, and fires.
आपके बाणों से छिन्न-भिन्न हुए स्थानों में, गाँवों में, नगरों में, घने जंगलों में, रेगिस्तानों में, जंगलों में और आग में।
लोकालोकाचलान्तेषु पर्वतेषु ह्रदेषु च | आन्ध्रद्वविडकाश्मीरपारसीकपुरेषु च || २७ ||
lokālokācalānteṣu parvateṣu hradeṣu ca | āndhradvaviḍakāśmīrapārasīkapureṣu ca || 27 ||
At the boundaries of Lokāloka, on mountains, in lakes, and in the cities of Andhra, Dravida, Kashmir, and Persia.
लोकालोक की सीमाओं पर, पर्वतों पर, झीलों में, और आन्ध्र, द्रविड़, कश्मीर और पारसीक के नगरों में।
नानाम्भोधितरङ्गासु गङ्गाजलघटासु च | द्वीपान्तरेषु जालेषु जम्बूखण्डलतासु च || २८ ||
nānāmbhodhitaraṅgāsu gaṅgājalaghaṭāsu ca | dvīpāntareṣu jāleṣu jambūkhaṇḍalatāsu ca || 28 ||
In the various ocean waves, in the pots of Ganga water, on distant islands, in nets, and in the Jambu continent's vines.
विभिन्न समुद्री तरंगों में, गंगा जल के घड़ों में, दूर के द्वीपों पर, जालों में, और जम्बू खण्ड की लताओं में।
सर्वतः पर्वताकाराः पतितास्ते सुरारयः | विस्फोटिताङ्गचरणा विभिन्नकरबाहवः || २९ ||
sarvataḥ parvatākārāḥ patitāste surārayaḥ | visphoṭitāṅgacaraṇā vibhinnakarabāhavaḥ || 29 ||
Those enemies of the gods, who were mountain-like in appearance, fell down everywhere. Their limbs and feet were burst open, and their hands and arms were shattered.
वे देवों के शत्रु, जो पर्वतों के समान दिखाई देते थे, हर जगह गिर पड़े। उनके अंग और पैर फट गए, और उनके हाथ और बाँहें टूट गईं।
शाखालग्नान्त्रतन्त्रीका मुक्तरक्तभरच्छटाः | व्यस्तशेखरमूर्धानो निष्क्रान्ताः कुपितेक्षणाः || ३० ||
śākhālagna antratantrikā muktaraktabharacchatāḥ | vyastashekharamūrdhāno niṣkrāntāḥ kupitekṣaṇāḥ || 30 ||
Their intestines entangled in branches, their bodies dripping with blood, their crowns and heads scattered, they emerged with angry eyes.
उनकी आँतें शाखाओं में उलझी हुई थीं, उनके शरीर से खून टपक रहा था, उनके मुकुट और सिर बिखरे हुए थे, और वे क्रोधित नेत्रों के साथ निकले।

sāyudhā balamāyeṣuccchinnakaṅkaṭahetayaḥ | dūrāpātaviparyastapatannānāyudhāṃśukāḥ || 31 ||
The warriors, armed with various weapons, were struck by the sharp arrows and fell, their armor and weapons scattered.
योद्धा, विभिन्न शस्त्रों से सुसज्जित, तीखे बाणों से घायल होकर गिरे, उनके कवच और शस्त्र बिखर गए।
कण्ठलम्बिशिरस्त्राणचटत्कारोग्रभीतयः | शिखाशतशिलाप्रोता देहभागविलम्बिनः || ३२ ||
kaṇṭhalambiśirastrāṇacaṭatkārograbhītayaḥ | śikhāśataśilāprotā dehabhāgavilambinaḥ || 32 ||
The warriors, with their necks adorned with armor, were terrified by the fierce battle cries and fell, their bodies pierced by hundreds of arrows.
योद्धा, जिनके गले कवचों से सुशोभित थे, भयंकर युद्ध के नादों से डरकर गिरे, उनके शरीर सैकड़ों बाणों से छलनी हो गए।
शाल्मल्युग्रदृढापातकटत्कण्टकसंकटाः | सुशिलाफलकास्फालशतधाशीर्णमस्तकाः || ३३ ||
śālmalyugradṛḍhāpātakaṭatkaṇṭakasaṃkaṭāḥ | suśilāphalakāsphālaśatadhāśīrṇamastakāḥ || 33 ||
The warriors, struck by the fierce and sharp arrows, fell with their heads shattered into hundreds of pieces, like the fruits of the silk-cotton tree.
योद्धा, जो तीखे और भयंकर बाणों से घायल होकर गिरे, उनके सिर सैकड़ों टुकड़ों में बिखर गए, जैसे सेमल के फल।

Immediately after the impact of all the weapons and arrows, the demons perished in all directions, like dust particles in a cloud of water.
