Sthiti, Chapter 26स्थिति प्रकरण · सर्ग २६

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । इति निर्णीय दैत्येन्द्रो दामव्यालकटान्विताम् । सेनां संप्रेषयामास भूतलं देवनाशिनीम् ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | iti nirṇīya daityendro dāmavyālakaṭānvitām | senāṃ saṃpreṣayāmāsa bhūtalaṃ devanāśinīm || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Having decided this, the king of the daityas sent down to earth an army accompanied by Dama, Vyala and Kata, an army that could destroy the gods.

श्री वसिष्ठ जी बोले, ऐसा तय करके दैत्यों के राजा ने दाम, व्याल और कट के साथ एक सेना धरती पर भेजी, जो देवताओं का नाश करने वाली थी।

दैत्याः सागरकुञ्जेभ्यः कन्दरेभ्यश्च सायुधाः । उदगुर्भीमनिर्ह्लादाः सपक्षगिरिलीलया ॥ २ ॥

daityāḥ sāgarakuñjebhyaḥ kandarebhyaśca sāyudhāḥ | udagurbhīmanirhlādāḥ sapakṣagirilīlayā || 2 ||

The daityas, armed, rose up out of the ocean's groves and out of mountain caves, giving out terrible roars, moving with the ease of mountains that have wings.

हथियारों से लैस दैत्य समुद्र के कुंजों से और पहाड़ों की गुफाओं से ऊपर उठे, वे भयानक गर्जना कर रहे थे और ऐसे उड़ रहे थे जैसे पंखों वाले पर्वत खेल-खेल में उड़ते हों।

रोदसीकोटरं हस्तप्रहारहतभास्करम् । दानवाः पूरयामासुर्दामव्यालकटैधिताः ॥ ३ ॥

rodasīkoṭaraṃ hastaprahārahata bhāskaram | dānavāḥ pūrayāmāsurdāmavyālakaṭaidhitāḥ || 3 ||

The danavas, made mightier by Dama, Vyala and Kata, filled the whole space between heaven and earth, blotting out the sun with the blows of their hands.

दाम, व्याल और कट से और भी बलवान हुए दानवों ने आकाश और धरती के बीच का पूरा स्थान भर दिया, और अपने हाथों की चोट से सूरज को ढक दिया।

अथोत्तस्थुर्निकुञ्जेभ्यः कन्दरेभ्यः सुराचलात् । प्रलयान्त इवाक्षुब्धा भीमाः स्वर्वासिनां गणाः ॥ ४ ॥

athottasthur nikuñjebhyaḥ kandarebhyaḥ surācalāt | pralayānta ivākṣubdhā bhīmāḥ svārvāsināṃ gaṇāḥ || 4 ||

Then, from groves and caves and from the mountain of the gods, the hosts of heaven's dwellers rose up, terrible and undaunted, like the very end of the world.

फिर कुंजों से, गुफाओं से और देवताओं के पर्वत से स्वर्ग में रहने वालों के समूह उठ खड़े हुए, वे निडर और भयानक थे, मानो प्रलय का समय आ गया हो।

देवासुरपताकिन्योस्तद्युद्धमभवत्तयोः । अकालोल्वणकल्पान्तभीषणं भुवनान्तरे ॥ ५ ॥

devāsurapatākinyostadyuddhamabhavattayoḥ | akālolvaṇakalpāntabhīṣaṇaṃ bhuvanāntare || 5 ||

Then, between those two banner-carrying armies of gods and demons, a battle broke out, as terrifying as a great dissolution of the world come before its time, there in the space between the worlds.

तब देवताओं और असुरों की उन दोनों झंडों वाली सेनाओं के बीच युद्ध छिड़ गया, जो असमय आई भीषण प्रलय जैसा भयानक था, और यह लोकों के बीच के स्थान में हुआ।

पेतुः प्रलयपर्यस्तचन्द्रार्का इव दीप्तयः । शिरांसि कुन्डलोहयोततेजःपीततमांस्यथ ॥ ॥ ६ ॥

petuḥ pralayaparyastacandrārkā iva dīptayaḥ | śirāṃsi kuṇḍalohayotatejaḥpītatamāṃsyatha || 6 ||

Heads fell, blazing like the sun and moon flung down at the world's dissolution, their glow bright with the gold of earrings, swallowing up the darkness.

सिर गिर पड़े, वे ऐसे चमक रहे थे जैसे प्रलय के समय गिराए गए सूरज और चांद, उनके कुंडलों के सोने से उनकी चमक और तेज़ हो गई थी, और वह चमक अंधेरे को निगल रही थी।

जुघूर्णुर्भटनिर्मुक्तसिंहनादविराविताः । प्रलयानिलसंपूरैः स्फुटहासा इवाद्रयः ॥ ॥ ७ ॥

jughūrṇurbhaṭanirmuktasiṃhanādavirāvitāḥ | pralayānilasaṃpūraiḥ sphuṭahāsā ivādrayaḥ || 7 ||

They reeled, ringing with the lion-roars the warriors let loose, like mountains cracking open with laughter in the storm-winds of the world's end.

वे डगमगा रहे थे, योद्धाओं की छोड़ी गई सिंह-गर्जना से गूंज रहे थे, मानो प्रलय की आंधी में पहाड़ फट-फटकर हंस रहे हों।

रेणुः शैलशिलातुल्यहेतिघातास्तभित्तयः । कुलाचलतटाभीरुविश्रान्तहरिमण्डलाः ॥ ॥ ८ ॥

reṇuḥ śailaśilātulyahetighātāstabhittayaḥ | kulācalataṭābhīruviśrāntaharimaṇḍalāḥ || 8 ||

Dust rose in walls flung up by blows of weapons as hard as mountain rock, while fearless troops of horses rested on the slopes of the ancient mountains.

पहाड़ों की चट्टानों जैसे कठोर हथियारों की चोट से धूल की दीवारें उठ खड़ी हुईं, और निडर घुड़सवार टुकड़ियां प्राचीन पर्वतों की ढलानों पर टिकी हुई थीं।

चेरुः परस्पराघातहतहेतिसमुत्थिताः । लोलानलकणाःकल्पविशीर्णा इव तारकाः ॥ ॥ ९ ॥

ceruḥ parasparāghātahatahetisamutthitāḥ | lolānalakaṇāḥkalpaviśīrṇā iva tārakāḥ || 9 ||

Sparks flew up from weapons clashing against each other, flickering bits of fire, like stars scattered at the end of a cosmic age.

आपस में टकराते हथियारों से चिंगारियां उठीं और इधर-उधर उड़ीं, वे कांपती हुई आग की चिंगारियां जैसी थीं, मानो प्रलय के समय बिखरे हुए तारे हों।

विलेसू रक्तमांसौघपूर्णैकार्णवतीरगाः । कल्पतालवदुत्ताला वेतालास्तालतालिताः ॥ ॥ १० ॥

vilesū raktamāṃsaughapūrṇaikārṇavatīragāḥ | kalpatālavaduttālā vetālāstālatālitāḥ || 10 ||

Ghouls danced on the banks of that single ocean filled with a flood of blood and flesh, as wild as the deluge at the end of a cosmic age, clapping out a rhythm.

प्रेत खून और मांस की बाढ़ से भरे उस एक समुद्र के किनारे नाच रहे थे, वे प्रलय की बाढ़ जैसे उग्र थे, और ताल बजाकर थाप दे रहे थे।

प्रस्फुरद्रुधिरासारशान्तपांसुपयोधरे । व्योम्नि हेतिहतक्षुण्णा मौलिकुण्डलकोटयः ॥ ११ ॥

prasphuradrudhirāsāraśāntapāṃsupayodhare | vyomni hetihatakṣuṇṇā maulikuṇḍalakoṭayaḥ || 11 ||

In the sky, like a cloud whose dust had been laid by a spurting rain of blood, crowns and earrings by the millions flew, shattered and struck down by weapons.

आकाश में, जैसे किसी बादल की धूल खून की बौछार से बैठ गई हो, वैसे ही हथियारों की मार से टूटे हुए मुकुट और कुंडल असंख्य संख्या में उड़ रहे थे।

बभूवुर्भास्कराकारैः कल्पभूरुहधारिभिः । प्रहारदलिताद्रीन्द्रैर्दैत्यैर्निर्विवरा दिशः ॥ १२ ॥

babhūvurbhāskarākāraiḥ kalpabhūruhadhāribhiḥ | prahāradalitādrīndrairdaitairyirvivarā diśaḥ || 12 ||

The directions became so packed that there was no space left, filled with daityas blazing like the sun, wielding huge trees as clubs, who had smashed even the greatest mountains with their blows.

दिशाएं बिना किसी खाली जगह के दैत्यों से भर गईं, जो सूरज जैसे चमक रहे थे, बड़े-बड़े पेड़ों को हथियार की तरह उठाए हुए थे, और जिन्होंने अपनी चोटों से बड़े-बड़े पर्वतों तक को तोड़ डाला था।

जग्मुर्ज्वलदसिप्रान्तवातपातितभित्तयः । कणप्रकरतां शैलाः कल्पाग्निदलिता इव ॥ १३ ॥

jagmurjvaladasiprāntavātapātitabhittayaḥ | kaṇaprakaratāṃ śailāḥ kalpāgnidalitā iva || 13 ||

Mountains, their flanks brought down by the gusts from blazing swords, crumbled into heaps of dust, as if split apart by the fire that ends the world.

पहाड़, जिनकी दीवारें जलती हुई तलवारों की हवा से गिर गई थीं, चूर-चूर होकर ढेर बन गए, मानो प्रलय की आग ने उन्हें तोड़ डाला हो।

देवास्ते च समाजग्मुरश्वमेधैधिता इव । असुरानस्त्रविभ्रष्टाञ्जलदानिव वायवः ॥ १४ ॥

devāste ca samājagmurśvamedhaiḍhitā iva | asurānastravibhraṣṭāñjaladāniv vāyavaḥ || 14 ||

And the gods advanced together, as vigorous as if strengthened by a horse-sacrifice, driving the asuras, who had been broken loose by their weapons, the way winds scatter clouds.

और देवता एक साथ आगे बढ़े, मानो अश्वमेध यज्ञ से उनकी शक्ति बढ़ गई हो, और उन्होंने हथियारों से तितर-बितर हुए असुरों को ऐसे खदेड़ा जैसे हवाएं बादलों को बिखेर देती हैं।

जगृहुस्तानथाक्रम्य जरठासूनिवौतवः । तेऽपि ताञ्जगृहुर्मत्तानृक्षारूढानिव द्रुमान् ॥ १५ ॥

jagṛhustānathākramya jarathāsūnivautavaḥ | te'pi tāñjagṛhurmattānr̥kṣārūḍhāniv drumān || 15 ||

Then, having overpowered them, they seized them, gripping them like old, spent prey; and they too grabbed hold of those maddened creatures, the way one grabs hold of trees that bears have climbed.

फिर उन पर आक्रमण करके उन्होंने उन्हें ऐसे जकड़ लिया जैसे किसी बूढ़े, थके शिकार को जकड़ा जाता है; और उन्होंने भी उन उन्मत्त असुरों को ऐसे पकड़ लिया जैसे भालू के चढ़े हुए पेड़ों को पकड़ा जाता है।

दोर्वृक्षविलसद्धेतिकुसुमाः शस्त्रपल्लवाः । रेजुः सुरासुराः फुल्ला वनलोला इव द्रुमाः ॥ १६ ॥

dorvṛkṣavilasaddhetikusumāḥ śastrapallavāḥ | rejuḥ surāsurāḥ phullā vanalolā iva drumāḥ || 16 ||

The gods and demons, their arms like tree branches with gleaming weapons for flowers and blades for young shoots, shone forth in full bloom, like trees swaying in a forest.

देवता और असुर ऐसे चमक रहे थे मानो उनकी भुजाएं पेड़ों की डालियां हों, चमकते हथियार उन पर खिले फूल हों और तलवारें कोंपलें हों, जैसे वन में लहलहाते खिले हुए पेड़।

अन्योन्यं पूरयामासुः शस्त्रपूरैर्दिशो दश । वनानि कुसुमव्रातैः सुमेराविव मारुतः ॥ १७ ॥

anyonyaṃ pūrayāmāsuḥ śastrapūraiḥrdiśo daśa | vanāni kusumavrātaiḥ sumeāviva mārutaḥ || 17 ||

They filled the ten directions with each other's weapons, the way the wind fills the forests around Mount Meru with drifts of flowers.

उन्होंने दसों दिशाओं को एक-दूसरे पर बरसाए हथियारों से भर दिया, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे मेरु पर्वत के आसपास हवा जंगलों को फूलों के ढेर से भर देती है।

घोरं समभवद्युद्धं देवदानवसेनयोः । रोदोरन्ध्रोदुम्बरान्तर्महामशकसंघयोः ॥ १८ ॥

ghoraṃ samabhavadyuddhaṃ devadānavasenayoḥ | rodorandhrodumbarāntarmahāmaśakasaṃghayoḥ || 18 ||

A terrible battle broke out between the armies of the gods and the danavas, like two great swarms of mosquitoes fighting inside the narrow crack of a doorway.

देवताओं और दानवों की सेनाओं के बीच एक भयंकर युद्ध छिड़ गया, जैसे दरवाज़े की एक संकरी दरार में मच्छरों के दो बड़े झुंड आपस में लड़ रहे हों।

अथोदपतदुत्तालैर्लोकपालेभमण्डलैः । कल्पाभ्रस्फूर्जिताकारो दारुणः समरारवः ॥ १९ ॥

athodapataduttālairlokapālebhamanḍalaiḥ | kalpābhraśphūrjitākāro dāruṇaḥ samarāravaḥ || 19 ||

Then, from the towering troops of the world-guardians' elephants, a terrible din of battle rose up, sounding like thunder from the clouds of the world's dissolution.

फिर लोकपालों के हाथियों की ऊंची-ऊंची टुकड़ियों से युद्ध का एक भयंकर शोर उठा, जो प्रलय के बादलों की गरज जैसा लग रहा था।

पिण्डग्रहेण नभसि भूभागमिव कुट्टिमम् । मुष्टिग्राह्यो महामेघमन्थरोदरपीवरः ॥ २० ॥

piṇḍagraheṇa nabhasi bhūbhāgamiva kuṭṭimam | muṣṭigrāhyo mahāmeghamantharodarapīvaraḥ || 20 ||

That din hung condensed in the sky like a solid lump, like a paved floor made from a piece of the earth; it was thick enough to grasp in the fist, as dense as the slow, heavy belly of a great rain cloud.

वह शोर आकाश में एक ठोस पिंड जैसा जमा हुआ था, मानो धरती के किसी टुकड़े से बना फर्श हो; वह इतना घना था कि मुट्ठी में पकड़ा जा सके, जैसे किसी बड़े बादल का भारी और धीमी गति वाला पेट।

रथसंपातसंपिष्टशस्त्रशैलरटन्नटः । त्रुटद्धृदयनिःसत्त्वकर्कशाक्रन्दघर्घरः ॥ २१ ॥

rathasaṃpātasaṃpiṣṭaśastrśailaraṭannaṭaḥ | truṭaddhṛdayaniḥsattvakarkaśākrandaghargharaḥ || 21 ||

That din rang out like some wild performer, rising from weapons and rock-hard missiles smashed in the crash of chariots, and it rasped with the harsh, dying cries of men whose hearts were breaking and whose strength was draining away.

वह शोर किसी उन्मत्त नर्तक की तरह गूंज रहा था, रथों की टक्कर में कुचले गए हथियारों और पत्थर जैसे शस्त्रों से उठ रहा था, और उन लोगों की कर्कश, मरणासन्न चीखों से घरघरा रहा था जिनके दिल टूट रहे थे और शक्ति चुकती जा रही थी।

प्रलयप्रत्ययोल्लासिकल्पान्तारावबृंहणः । द्वादशादित्यसंघट्टद्रवत्काञ्चनपर्वतः ॥ २२ ॥

pralayapratyayollāsikalpāntārāvabṛṃhaṇaḥ | dvādaśādityasaṃghaṭṭadravatkāñcanaparvataḥ || 22 ||

That din swelled like a trumpeting roar, rising with the very conviction of the world's final dissolution, like a mountain of gold melting under the combined blaze of the twelve suns.

वह शोर हाथी की गर्जना की तरह बढ़ता जा रहा था, मानो प्रलय के आने का पक्का यकीन हो, जैसे बारह सूर्यों की मिली-जुली आग से सोने का पहाड़ पिघल रहा हो।

ब्रह्माण्डकुण्डसंघट्टात्परावृत्त्या च निर्गतः । महास्रोतःपयःपूरः सत्त्वाहत इवाकरः ॥ २३ ॥

brahmāṇḍakuṇḍasaṃghaṭṭātparāvṛttyā ca nirgataḥ | mahāsrotaḥpayaḥpūraḥ sattvāhata ivākaraḥ || 23 ||

That roar burst out from the clash within the very vessel of the cosmic egg, echoing back on itself, like the flood of a great torrent, like a mine broken open by force, pouring out its wealth.

वह गर्जना ब्रह्मांड रूपी बर्तन के भीतर हुई टक्कर से फूट पड़ी और गूंजकर लौट आई, जैसे किसी बड़ी नदी की बाढ़ का पानी, जैसे बलपूर्वक खोली गई खान से निकला हुआ खज़ाना।

चञ्चत्सपक्षशैलेन्द्रपक्षपातचलद्ध्वनिः । कठिनापूरणोद्धूतस्फुटच्छैलेन्द्रकन्दरः ॥ २४ ॥

cañcatsapakṣaśailendrapakṣapātacaladdhvaniḥ | kaṭhināpūraṇoddhūtasphuṭacchailendrakandaraḥ || 24 ||

That sound stirred like the noise of winged mountains beating and dropping their wings; it was like mountain caves bursting open, shaken from being packed hard and full.

वह ध्वनि ऐसे हिल रही थी जैसे पंखों वाले पर्वतों के पंख फड़फड़ाकर गिर रहे हों; वह ऐसी थी मानो पहाड़ों की गुफाएं ठोस चीज़ों से ठसाठस भर जाने के कारण हिलकर फट रही हों।

मन्दरोद्धतदुग्धाब्धिसंक्षोभसदृशाङ्गकः । रतिश्रुद्धुंघुमास्फोटघटितद्वीपजन्तुभूः ॥ २५ ॥

mandaroddhata dugdhābdhisankṣobhasadṛśāṅgakaḥ | ratiśruddhuṃghumāsphoṭaghṭitadvīpajantubhūḥ || 25 ||

Its shape was like the ocean of milk thrown into turmoil by Mount Mandara, and its roar reached down to the ground where the creatures of the earth's islands lived.

उसका आकार मंदराचल से मथे गए दूध के सागर की उथल-पुथल जैसा था, और उसकी गूंज द्वीपों में रहने वाले जीवों की धरती तक पहुंच गई।

सेनयोः क्षुब्धयोरासीद्युद्धमुद्धतदानवम् । निष्पिष्टनगरग्रामगिरिकाननमानवम् ॥ २६ ॥

senayoḥ kṣubdhayorāsīdyuddhamuddhatadānavam | niṣpiṣṭanagaragrāmagirikānanamānavam || 26 ||

Between the two seething armies a battle raged, full of furious danavas, in which cities, villages, mountains, forests, and men were all crushed to pieces.

दोनों उफनती हुई सेनाओं के बीच एक युद्ध हुआ, जिसमें उग्र दानव भरे हुए थे, और जिसमें नगर, गांव, पहाड़, जंगल और मनुष्य सब कुचल दिए गए।

महाहेतिशतच्छिन्नदानवाचलपूर्णदिक् । अन्योन्याहतहेत्यादिचूर्णपूर्णाम्बरोदरम् ॥ २७ ॥

mahāhetiśatacchinnadānavācalapūrṇadik | anyonyāhathetyādicūrṇapūrṇāmbarodaram || 27 ||

The directions were filled with mountain-sized danavas cut down by hundreds of powerful weapons, and the sky's whole expanse was filled with the dust of weapons shattered against each other.

दिशाएं सैकड़ों बड़े-बड़े हथियारों से कटे हुए पहाड़ जैसे दानवों से भर गईं, और आकाश का पूरा विस्तार आपस में टकराए हथियारों के चूरे से भर गया।

भुशुण्डीमण्डलास्फोटस्फुटन्मेरुशिरःशतम् । शरमारुतनिर्लूनदैत्यदेवमुखाम्बुजम् ॥ २८ ॥

bhūśuṇḍīmaṇḍalāsphoṭasphuṭanmeruśiraḥśatam | śaramārutanirlūnadaityadevamukhāmbujam || 28 ||

Hundreds of Meru's peaks cracked open from the blows of hurled sling-stones, and the lotus-faces of daityas and gods alike were mown down by the wind of arrows.

गोफन से फेंके गए पत्थरों की मार से मेरु पर्वत की सैकड़ों चोटियां फट गईं, और बाणों की आंधी ने दैत्यों और देवताओं दोनों के कमल जैसे मुखों को काट डाला।

चक्रावर्तशतभ्रान्तदेवदैत्यजरत्तणम् । सेनाप्रहारकल्लोलवलनावलिताम्बरम् ॥ २९ ॥

cakrāvartśatabhrāntadevadaityajaratṭaṇam | senāprahārakallolavalanāvalitāmbaram || 29 ||

Gods and daityas were spun around by hundreds of whirling eddies like bits of withered straw, and the sky itself curved and twisted under the waves stirred up by the armies' blows.

देवता और दैत्य सैकड़ों भंवरों में ऐसे घूम रहे थे जैसे सूखे तिनके घूमते हैं, और सेनाओं की टक्करों से उठी लहरों से आकाश भी मुड़ता-तड़फड़ाता रहा।

हेत्युग्रवातनिष्पिष्टपतद्वैमानिकव्रजम् । अस्त्रोदिताब्धिवार्योघप्लावितव्योमपत्तनम् ॥ ३० ॥

hetyugravātanispiṣṭapatadvaimānikavrajam | astroditābdhivāryoghaplāvitavyomapattanam || 30 ||

A fierce wind driven by weapons ground down the flying chariots and sent them crashing down in crowds, and weapons threw up such floods of ocean water that they drowned the city in the sky.

हथियारों की तेज़ हवा ने उड़ने वाले रथों को कुचल दिया और वे झुंड के झुंड गिरने लगे, और हथियारों ने समुद्र का पानी इतना उठा दिया कि आसमान का शहर उसी में डूब गया।

वहन्महास्त्रपातासिशूलशक्तिनदीशतम् । शैलपक्षोद्भटास्फोटलुठद्ब्रह्माण्डमण्डपम् ॥ ३१ ॥

vahanmahāstrapātāsiśūlaśaktinadīśatam | śailapakṣodbhaṭāsphoṭaluṭhadbrahmāṇḍamaṇḍapam || 31 ||

Hundreds of rivers ran full of fallen swords, spears, and tridents, along with other great weapons, and the loud crash of winged mountains hurled through the air made the whole dome of the universe shake.

सैकड़ों नदियाँ गिरी हुई तलवारों, भालों, त्रिशूलों और दूसरे बड़े हथियारों से भर गईं, और पंख वाले पहाड़ों की ज़ोरदार टक्कर से पूरा ब्रह्मांड हिल गया।

दैत्यपार्ष्णिप्रहारौघपतल्लोकेशपत्तनम् । नारीहलहलारावरणत्कङ्कणमन्दिरम् ॥ ३२ ॥

daityapārṣṇiprahāraughapatallokeśapattanam | nārīhalahalārāvaraṇatkaṅkaṇamandiram || 32 ||

The demons' rain of kicks brought down the city of the lord of the worlds, and inside the palace, women cried out in distress while their bangles jingled.

राक्षसों की लातों की बौछार से लोकपति के शहर का पतन हो गया, और महल के भीतर औरतें दुख से चिल्ला रही थीं जबकि उनकी चूड़ियाँ खनक रही थीं।

लुठद्दैत्यवलोद्भूतमत्तास्रौघजलान्वितम् । रक्तधौतनरौघोग्रमुक्तनादद्रवज्जनम् ॥ ३३ ॥

luṭhaddaityavalodbhūtamattāsraughajalānvitam | raktadhautanaraughogramuktanādadravajjanam || 33 ||

Blood gushed in floods from the writhing, fallen bodies of the demon army, and men, drenched in that blood, ran about screaming in terror.

राक्षसों की सेना के गिरे हुए, तड़पते शरीरों से खून की धाराएँ बह निकलीं, और उस खून से भीगे लोग डर के मारे चीखते हुए इधर-उधर भागने लगे।

लोकपानीकपाम्भोजच्छन्नाच्छन्नयमान्वितम् । पुनः सुरासुरैर्घातैर्दृष्टसैन्यकुलाकुलम् ॥ ३४ ॥

lokapānīkapāmbhojacchannācchannayamānvitam | punaḥ surāsurairghātairdṛṣṭasainyakulākulam || 34 ||

The lotus-like faces of the generals serving the world's guardians were covered over again and again as death took them, and once more the armies before their eyes fell into utter confusion from the blows gods and demons traded.

लोकपालों के सेनापतियों के कमल जैसे चेहरे बार-बार ढक गए जब मौत ने उन्हें छू लिया, और देवताओं तथा राक्षसों के बीच लगी चोटों से आँखों के सामने की सेनाएँ फिर से पूरी तरह गड़बड़ा गईं।

सपक्षपर्वताकारदानवाद्रिगमागमैः । वहच्छवशवाशब्दभूरिभाङ्कारभीषणम् ॥ ३५ ॥

sapakṣaparvatākāradānavādrigamāgamaiḥ | vahacchavaśavāśabdabhūribhāṅkārabhīṣaṇam || 35 ||

Huge winged demons, shaped like mountains, moved back and forth, and the place grew terrifying with the loud growling and barking of dogs among the corpses.

पंख वाले, पहाड़ जैसे बड़े राक्षस इधर-उधर घूम रहे थे, और लाशों के बीच कुत्तों के गुर्राने और भौंकने की ज़ोरदार आवाज़ से वह जगह डरावनी हो गई।

आयुधाग्रविभिन्नोग्रदैत्यपर्वतनिर्झरैःरक्तैररुणिताशेषवसुधार्णवपर्वतम् ॥ ३६ ॥

āyudhāgravibhinnogradaityaparvatanirjharaiḥraktairaruṇitāśeṣavasudhārṇavaparvatam || 36 ||

Streams of blood poured like waterfalls from the terrible demon-mountains as weapon-points split them open, and that blood turned the whole earth, the ocean, and the mountains red.

हथियारों की नोकों से चीरे गए भयानक राक्षस-पहाड़ों से खून झरनों की तरह बह निकला, और उस खून से पूरी धरती, समुद्र और पहाड़ लाल हो गए।

उत्सन्नराष्ट्रनगरविपिनग्रामगह्वरम्धृतासंख्यासुरेभाश्वमनुष्यशवपर्वतम् ॥ ३७ ॥

utsannarāṣṭranagaravipinagrāmagahvaramdhṛtāsaṃkhyāsurebhāśvamanuṣyaśavaparvatam || 37 ||

Kingdoms, cities, forests, villages, and mountain-caves lay in ruin, and countless corpses of demons, elephants, horses, and men piled up as high as mountains.

राज्य, शहर, जंगल, गाँव और पहाड़ों की गुफाएँ बरबाद पड़ी थीं, और राक्षसों, हाथियों, घोड़ों और आदमियों की गिनती से बाहर लाशें पहाड़ों जैसी ऊँची ढेर हो गईं।

सुतालोत्तालनाराचराजिरोचितवारणम्मुष्टिप्रहारपिष्टांसमत्तैरावणवारणम् ॥ ३८ ॥

sutālottālanārācarājirocitavāraṇammuṣṭiprahārapiṣṭāṃsamattairāvaṇavāraṇam || 38 ||

A towering elephant gleamed with rows of iron arrows stuck all over it, and fists came down again and again, crushing the shoulders of Airavata, the maddened elephant.

एक ऊँचा हाथी अपने ऊपर चुभे लोहे के तीरों की कतारों से चमक रहा था, और मुक्कों की मार से ऐरावत नाम के मस्त हाथी के कंधे बार-बार कुचले जा रहे थे।

कल्पाभ्रपटलासारधारादलितपर्वतम्महाशनिविनिष्पेषपिष्टोड्डीनकुलाचलम् ॥ ३९ ॥

kalpābhrapaṭalāsāradhārādalitaparvatammahāśaniviniṣpeṣapiṣṭoḍḍīnakulācalam || 39 ||

Torrents of rain from the doomsday clouds split the mountains apart, and mighty thunderbolts ground the flying, winged mountains down to dust.

प्रलय के बादलों की तेज़ बारिश ने पहाड़ों को चीर दिया, और भारी बिजलियों ने उड़ने वाले, पंख लगे पहाड़ों को पीसकर धूल कर दिया।

कुपिताग्निज्वलज्ज्वालाजालज्वलितदानवमेकाञ्जलिपुटानीतसमुद्रोत्सादितानलम् ॥ ४० ॥

kupitāgnijvalajjvālājālajvalitadānavamekāñjalipuṭānītasamudrotsāditānalam || 40 ||

The raging fire's web of blazing flames burned the demons, until a whole ocean was scooped up in a single cupped hand and poured out to put the fire out.

क्रोध से जलती आग की लपटों के जाल ने राक्षसों को जला डाला, यहाँ तक कि पूरे समुद्र को एक ही अंजुली में उठाकर उस आग को बुझा दिया गया।

चण्डदैत्यातिसंभारशिलीकृतमहाज्वलम् । वनव्यूहेन्धनाग्न्यर्चिर्द्राविताम्बुशिलोच्चयम् ॥ ४१ ॥

caṇḍadaityātisaṃbhāraśilīkṛtamahājvalam | vanavyūhendhanāgnyarcirdrāvitāmbuśiloccayam || 41 ||

The vast mass of fierce demons was turned to stone by that great blaze, and with whole forests as fuel, the fire's flames melted away heaps of ice.

उस बड़ी आग ने भयंकर राक्षसों के बड़े समूह को पत्थर बना दिया, और पूरे जंगलों को ईंधन बनाकर आग की लपटों ने बर्फ के ढेरों को पिघला दिया।

अस्त्रनिर्मितदुर्वारतमःकल्पान्तरात्रिकम् । मायासूर्यगणोद्द्योतैः पीतातनुतमःपटम् ॥ ४२ ॥

astranirmitadurvāratamaḥkalpāntarātrikaṃ | māyāsūryagaṇodyotaiḥ pītātanutamaḥpaṭam || 42 ||

Weapons wove an unstoppable darkness like the night at the end of a cosmic age, and the light of conjured, illusory suns drank up that vast veil of darkness.

हथियारों ने ऐसा घना अंधेरा बना दिया जैसे किसी युग के अंत की रात होती है, और मायावी सूरजों की रोशनी ने उस बड़े अंधेरे के पर्दे को सोख लिया।

मायाग्निवर्षनिष्पीतकलाभ्रघनवर्षणम् । ससीत्काराग्निवमनशस्त्रसंघट्टवर्षणम् ॥ ४३ ॥

māyāgnivarṣaniṣpītakalābhraghanavarṣaṇam | sasītkārāgnivamanaśastrasaṃghaṭṭavarṣaṇam || 43 ||

A rain of magical fire drank up the downpour from the dense clouds, hissing loudly as fire-spitting weapons clashed together in a storm of blows.

मायावी आग की बारिश ने घने बादलों की बरसात को सोख लिया, और आग उगलने वाले हथियार तेज़ आवाज़ के साथ आपस में टकराते रहे।

वज्रवर्षास्त्रनिर्धूतशैलवर्षास्त्रसंभ्रमम् । निद्राबोधास्त्रयुद्धाढ्यं संघर्षावग्रहाश्रयम् ॥ ४४ ॥

vajravarṣāstranirdhūtaśailavarṣāstrasaṃbhramam | nidrābodhāstrayuddhāḍhyaṃ saṃgharṣāvagrahāśrayam || 44 ||

The Thunderbolt-rain weapon and the Mountain-rain weapon fell in a wild, confused clash, knocking each other aside, and the fighting grew thick with the Sleep-weapon and the Waking-weapon, resting on unending, grinding deadlock.

वज्र-वर्षा वाला हथियार और पहाड़-वर्षा वाला हथियार आपस में उलझकर एक-दूसरे को गिराते रहे, और लड़ाई में नींद लाने वाला हथियार और जगाने वाला हथियार भी खूब चले, जो लगातार खिंचती रस्साकशी पर टिके थे।

वहत्क्रकचवृक्षास्त्रं जलाग्न्यस्मरणान्धितम् । ब्रह्मास्त्रयुद्धविषमं तमस्तेजोस्त्रसारितम् ॥ ४५ ॥

vahatkrakacavṛkṣāstraṃ jalāgnyasmaraṇāndhitam | brahmāstrayuddhaviṣamaṃ tamastejostrasāritam || 45 ||

The Saw-weapon and the Tree-weapon flew out, blinding warriors until they could no longer tell water from fire, and the battle grew fierce with the Brahma-weapon, pushed further by the Darkness-weapon and the Light-weapon.

आरी वाला हथियार और पेड़ वाला हथियार छूटे, जिससे लड़ाके अंधे हो गए और पानी-आग तक पहचानना भूल गए, और ब्रह्मास्त्र से लड़ाई और भयानक हो गई, जिसे अंधेरे वाले हथियार और रोशनी वाले हथियार ने और आगे बढ़ाया।

अस्त्रोद्गीर्णायुधानीकनीरन्ध्रसकलाम्बरम् । शिलावर्षास्त्रदलितं वह्निवर्षास्त्रभासुरम् ॥ ४६ ॥

astroddgīrṇāyudhānīkanīrandhrasakalāmbaram | śilāvarṣāstradalitaṃ vahnivarṣāstrabhāsuram || 46 ||

Weapons spat out whole armies of other weapons until they packed the entire sky without a single gap; the Stone-rain weapon smashed things apart, and the Fire-rain weapon blazed everywhere.

हथियारों ने इतने और हथियार उगले कि पूरा आसमान बिना किसी खाली जगह के भर गया; पत्थर-वर्षा वाले हथियार ने चीज़ों को तोड़ डाला, और आग-वर्षा वाला हथियार हर तरफ धधक उठा।

पताकास्पृष्टशशिकैश्चक्रचीत्कारगर्जितैः । मुहूर्तेन रथैर्लङ्घितोदयास्तमयाचलम् ॥ ४७ ॥

patākāspṛṣṭaśaśikaiścakracītkāragarjitaiḥ | muhūrtena rathairlaṅghitodayāstamayācalam || 47 ||

With their banners brushing the moon and their wheels shrieking and roaring, chariots crossed in a single instant from the mountain where the sun rises to the mountain where it sets.

उनके झंडे चाँद को छू रहे थे और पहियों से चीख जैसी गरज उठ रही थी, और रथ एक ही पल में सूरज उगने वाले पहाड़ से सूरज डूबने वाले पहाड़ तक पहुँच गए।

वज्रप्रहाराविरतम्रियमाणमहासुरम् । शुक्रामरमहाविद्याजीवमानमहासुरम् ॥ ४८ ॥

vajraprahārāviratamriyamāṇamahāsuram | śukrāmaramahāvidyājīvamānamahāsuram || 48 ||

The great demon kept dying under the thunderbolt's ceaseless blows, but Shukra's undying great spell brought him back to life again and again.

वह बड़ा राक्षस वज्र की लगातार मार से बार-बार मरता रहा, पर शुक्र की अमर महाविद्या उसे हर बार फिर से जिला देती थी।

विद्रवद्देवसंघातं जयप्रोड्डामरामरम् । शुभग्रहमहाकेतुमालिकानामितस्ततः ॥ ४९ ॥

vidravadddevasaṃghātaṃ jayaproḍḍāmarāmaram | śubhagrahamahāketumālikānāmitastataḥ || 49 ||

The routed host of gods fled, while one of the immortals ran wild in a frenzy of victory, and garlands of bright planets and great comets hung here and there in the sky.

देवताओं की हारी हुई सेना भाग रही थी, जबकि एक देवता जीत के नशे में बेकाबू होकर उछल रहा था, और तेज चमकते ग्रहों और बड़े धूमकेतुओं की मालाएँ आसमान में इधर-उधर लटकी थीं।

उत्पातमङ्गलौघानां बुद्धेरुद्धरकन्धरम् । साद्रिखोर्वीसमुद्रद्युजगद्रुधिरवारिधि ॥ ५० ॥

utpātamaṅgalaughānāṃ buddheruddhakakandharam | sādrikhorvīsamudradyujagadrudhiravāridhi || 50 ||

Something rose up with its neck lifted high amid the flood of omens, both fair and foul, that confounded every mind, while the mountains, the earth, the ocean, the sky, and the whole world turned into one vast ocean of blood.

उमड़ते हुए शुभ-अशुभ शकुनों के बीच किसी ने अपनी गर्दन ऊँची उठाई, जिससे हर किसी की समझ गड़बड़ा गई, और पहाड़, धरती, समुद्र, आकाश और पूरी दुनिया खून के एक बड़े समुद्र में बदल गई।

फुल्लैककिंशुकवनं कुर्वद्दुर्वारवैरतः । पर्वतप्रतिमासंख्यं शवपूर्णमहार्णवम् ॥ ५१ ॥

phullaikakiṃśukavanaṃ kurvaddurvāravairataḥ | parvatapratimāsaṃkhyaṃ śavapūrṇamahārṇavam || 51 ||

Their unstoppable hatred turned the battlefield into one solid forest of blazing red kimshuka blossoms, and the great ocean filled up with corpses piled as high as countless mountains.

उनकी न रुकने वाली नफरत ने युद्धभूमि को लाल किंशुक फूलों से लदे एक घने जंगल जैसा बना दिया, और बड़ा समुद्र अनगिनत पहाड़ों जितनी ऊँची लाशों से भर गया।

समग्रतरुशाखाग्रलम्बलोलमहाशवम् । दीप्यमानैः स्ववातार्तैः पक्षपुष्पैर्लसत्फलैः ॥ ५२ ॥

samagrataruśākhāgralambalolamahāśavam | dīpyamānaiḥ svavātārtaiḥ pakṣapuṣpairlasatphalaiḥ || 52 ||

Huge corpses hung and swayed from the tips of every tree's branches, like the tree's own shining fruits and blazing flowers trembling in the wind.

हर पेड़ की डालियों की नोक से बड़ी-बड़ी लाशें लटककर झूल रही थीं, मानो वे पेड़ के अपने चमकते फल और हवा में काँपते दहकते फूल हों।

तालोत्तालैः शरव्रातवनैर्व्याप्तनभस्थलम् । पर्वतप्रतिमासंख्यकबन्धशतबाहुभिः ॥ ५३ ॥

tālottālaiḥ śaravrātavanairvyāptanabhasthalam | parvatapratimāsaṃkhyakabandhaśatabāhubhiḥ || 53 ||

The sky filled up with towering forests of arrows, as tall as palm trees, and with headless bodies, countless as mountains, each waving a hundred arms.

आसमान ताड़ के पेड़ जैसे ऊँचे तीरों के जंगल से भर गया, और बिना सिर वाले शरीर, पहाड़ों जितने अनगिनत, अपनी सौ-सौ भुजाएँ हिला रहे थे।

नृत्यद्भिः पातिताम्भोदविमानसुरतारकम् । शरशक्तिगदाप्रासपट्टिशप्रोतपर्वतम् ॥ ५४ ॥

nṛtyadbhiḥ pātitāmbhodavimānasuratārakam | śaraśaktigadāprāsapattiśaprotaparvatam || 54 ||

Those headless bodies danced and knocked down clouds, flying chariots, gods, and even stars, while mountains were pierced through with arrows, javelins, clubs, lances, and spears.

वे बिना सिर वाले शरीर नाचते हुए बादलों, उड़ने वाले रथों, देवताओं और तारों तक को गिरा दे रहे थे, जबकि पहाड़ तीरों, भालों, गदाओं, बरछों और नेज़ों से आर-पार छिद गए थे।

लोकसप्तकविभ्रष्टकुड्यखण्डचिताम्बरम् । अनारतरसन्मत्तकल्पाभ्रदृढदुन्दुभि ॥ ५५ ॥

lokasaptakavibhraṣṭakuḍyakhaṇḍacitāmbaram | anāratarasanmattakalpābhradṛḍhadundubhi || 55 ||

The sky was littered with wall-fragments fallen from the seven worlds, looking like one huge funeral pyre, while the doomsday clouds roared on without end like great, furious war-drums.

आसमान सातों लोकों से गिरी हुई दीवारों के टुकड़ों से अटा पड़ा था और एक बड़ी चिता जैसा लग रहा था, जबकि प्रलय के बादल बिना रुके बड़े, गुस्सैल युद्ध-ढोलों जैसी गरज मचा रहे थे।

एवं शब्दशतोन्नादपातालतलवारणम् । विनायककराकृष्टदीर्घदानवपर्वतम् ॥ ५६ ॥

evaṃ śabdaśatonnādapātālatalavāraṇam | vināyakakarākṛṣṭadīrghadānavaparvatam || 56 ||

The roar of a hundred sounds reached all the way down to the floor of the underworld, as the leader's trunk dragged along a huge, towering demon-mountain.

सौ तरह की आवाज़ों की गूँज पाताल के तल तक पहुँच रही थी, जबकि सरदार की सूँड़ एक बड़े, ऊँचे राक्षस-पहाड़ को घसीट कर ले जा रही थी।

एकदिक्करनिष्पन्दसिद्धसाध्यमरुद्गणम् । पलायमानगन्धर्वकिन्नरामरचारणम् ॥ ५७ ॥

ekadikkaraniṣpandasiddhasādhyamarudgaṇam | palāyamānagandharvakinnarāmaracāraṇam || 57 ||

The hosts of Siddhas, Sadhyas, and Maruts stood frozen, hands still, staring in one direction, while the Gandharvas, Kinnaras, gods, and Charanas fled in terror.

सिद्धों, साध्यों और मरुतों के समूह हाथ रोककर एक ही दिशा में देखते हुए जड़ हो गए थे, जबकि गंधर्व, किन्नर, देवता और चारण डर के मारे भाग रहे थे।

वघुरशनिनिपातखण्डिताङ्गा दलितशिलाशकलाः ककुम्मुखेषु । प्रलयसमयसूचकाः सुराणां सुरतरुघर्घरघस्मराः समीराः ॥ ५८ ॥

vaghuraśaninipātakhaṇḍitāṅgā dalitaśilāśakalāḥ kakummukheṣu | pralayasamayasūcakāḥ surāṇāṃ suratarughargharaghasmarāḥ samīrāḥ || 58 ||

Winds blew whose thunderbolt-strikes had shattered bodies and flung broken rock-splinters toward every quarter of the sky; roaring through the gods' wishing-tree, they were the very signs that the hour of the great dissolution had come.

ऐसी हवाएँ चल रही थीं जिनकी वज्र जैसी बिजली गिरने से शरीर टुकड़े-टुकड़े हो गए थे और चट्टानों के टुकड़े हर दिशा में जा गिरे थे; देवताओं के इच्छा-पूर्ण करने वाले पेड़ में गरजती हुई ये हवाएँ इस बात का संकेत थीं कि प्रलय की घड़ी आ पहुँची है।
