श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | अस्मिन्विहरतो लोके लोकारामस्य धीमतः | श्रेयसे तिष्ठतो यत्नमुत्तमार्थाभिधायिनः || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | asminviharato loke lokārāmasya dhīmataḥ | śreyase tiṣṭhato yatnamuttamārthābhidhāyinaḥ || 1 ||

English

Vasishtha said: While living in this world, the wise person who enjoys the world and strives for the highest purpose should make efforts for the ultimate good.

हिन्दी

वसिष्ठ ने कहा: इस लोक में रहते हुए, जो व्यक्ति बुद्धिमान है और लोक का आनंद लेता है, उसे उत्तम उद्देश्य के लिए प्रयास करना चाहिए।

दामव्यालकटन्यायो मा ते भवतु राघव | भीमभासदृढस्थित्या त्वं विशोको भवेति च || २ ||

dāmavyālakaṭanyāyo mā te bhavatu rāghava | bhīmabhāsadṛḍhasthityā tvaṃ viśoko bhaveti ca || 2 ||

English

O Raghava, may the logic of the deer and the tiger not happen to you. With the firmness of the fearsome light, may you be free from sorrow.

हिन्दी

हे रघुवंशी, तुम्हें हरीण और व्याघ्र का तर्क न हो। भयंकर प्रकाश की दृढ़ता से, तुम शोक से मुक्त हो।

श्रीराम उवाच | दामव्यालकटन्यायो मा ते भूदित्युदाहृतम् | ब्रह्मन् किमेतद्भवता भवतापापहारिणा || ३ ||

śrīrāma uvāca | dāmavyālakaṭanyāyo mā te bhūdityudāhṛtam | brahman kimetadbhavatā bhavatāpāpahāriṇā || 3 ||

English

Rama said: It is said that the logic of the deer and the tiger should not happen to you. O Brahman, what is this that you, the remover of sorrow, have said?

हिन्दी

राम ने कहा: यह कहा गया है कि हरीण और व्याघ्र का तर्क तुम्हें न हो। हे ब्रह्मन्, यह क्या है जो तुमने, शोक को दूर करने वाले, कहा है?

भीमभासदृढस्थित्या त्वं विशोको भवेति च | प्रभो किमुक्तं भवता भवतापापहारिणा || ४ ||

bhīmabhāsadṛḍhasthityā tvaṃ viśoko bhaveti ca | prabho kimuktaṃ bhavatā bhavatāpāpahāriṇā || 4 ||

English

With the firmness of the fearsome light, may you be free from sorrow. O Lord, what has been said by you, the remover of sorrow?

हिन्दी

भयंकर प्रकाश की दृढ़ता से, तुम शोक से मुक्त हो। हे प्रभु, तुमने, शोक को दूर करने वाले, क्या कहा है?

उदारयैतया शुद्धं संप्रबोधय मां गिरा | घनस्तापापहारिण्या प्रावृषीव कलापिनम् || ५ ||

udārayaitayā śuddhaṃ saṃprabodhaya māṃ girā | ghanastāpāpahāriṇyā prāvṛṣīva kalāpinam || 5 ||

English

With this noble and pure speech, enlighten me as the rainy season enlightens the peacock, removing the dense heat.

हिन्दी

इस उदार और शुद्ध वाणी से, मुझे उसी तरह प्रबोधित करो जैसे वर्षा ऋतु मोर को घने ताप को दूर करके प्रबोधित करती है।

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | दामव्यालकटन्यायं भीमभासदृढस्थितिम् | श्रृणु राघव तच्छ्रुत्वा यदिष्टं तत्समाचर || ६ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | dāmavyālakaṭanyāyaṃ bhīmabhāsadṛḍhasthitim | śṛṇu rāghava tacchrutvā yadiṣṭaṃ tatsamācara || 6 ||

English

Vasishtha said: Listen, Raghava, to the firm and terrifying principle of the snake and the rope. Having heard that, do what is desired.

हिन्दी

वसिष्ठ ने कहा: हे रघुवंशी, रस्सी और साँप के भयानक और दृढ़ सिद्धांत को सुनो। उसे सुनकर जो इच्छा हो वह करो।

English

In the charming and wondrous cave of Patala, there was a demon king named Shambara, who was an ocean of magical gems.

आकाशनगरोद्यानरचितासुरमन्दिरः | कुत्रिमोत्तमचन्द्रार्कभूषितात्मीयमण्डलः || ८ ||

ākāśanagarodyānaracitāsuramandiraḥ | kutrimottamacandrārkabhūṣitātmīyamaṇḍalaḥ || 8 ||

English

His palace was adorned with aerial cities and gardens, and his own circle was decorated with the best artificial moons and suns.

शिलाशकलसंभूतपद्माद्यैरमराचलः | अनन्तविभवारम्भपरिपूरितदानवः || ९ ||

śilāśakalasaṃbhūtapadmādyairamarācalaḥ | anantavibhavārambhaparipūritadānavaḥ || 9 ||

English

He was like a mountain of the gods, born from fragments of rocks and lotuses, and his wealth was boundless, fulfilling all his endeavors.

English

His palace resounded with the melodious songs of celestial maidens and the jingling of ornaments. The trees in his pleasure gardens were adorned with the full beauty of the moon.

उसका महल देवांगनाओं के मधुर गीतों और आभूषणों की झंकार से गूँज रहा था। उसके क्रीड़ा उद्यानों के पेड़ चंद्रमा की पूर्ण शोभा से सजे हुए थे।

फुल्लनीलोत्पलव्यूहकरालरमणालयः | रत्नहंसध्वनाहूतहेमाम्बुरुहसारसः || ११ ||

phullanīlotpalavyūhakarālarmaṇālayaḥ | ratnahansadhvanāhūtahemāmburuhasārasaḥ || 11 ||

English

The abode is adorned with fully bloomed blue lotuses, and it is filled with the melodious sounds of jewel-like swans, inviting the golden lotuses.

यह निवास पूर्णतः खिले हुए नीले कमलों से सुशोभित है, और यह रत्न जैसे हंसों की मधुर ध्वनि से भरा हुआ है, जो सोने के कमलों को आमंत्रित करती है।

English

The golden trees' branches create a canopy of lotus buds, and the falling net of karanja flowers forms a garland of mandara blossoms.

सोने के पेड़ों की डालियाँ कमल के कली की छतरी बनाती हैं, और गिरती हुई करंज की फूलों की जाली मंदार के फूलों की माला बनाती है।

तर्कुयन्त्रमयानन्तदैत्यनिर्जितवासवः | हिमशीतानलज्वालानिर्मितोद्यानमण्डपः || १३ ||

tarkuyantramayānantadaityanirjitavāsavaḥ | himaśītānalajvālānirmiudyānamanḍapaḥ || 13 ||

English

The pavilion in the garden is constructed with the coolness of ice and the flames of fire, defeating the endless demons with the machine of logic.

सर्वत्र कुसुमोद्यानजितानन्दननन्दनः | मायासर्वहृतव्यालमलयाचलचन्दनः || १४ ||

English

Everywhere, the garden of flowers conquers the joy of the gods, and the sandalwood from the Malaya mountains is protected by the illusion that encompasses all serpents.

हर जगह, फूलों का बगीचा देवताओं के आनंद को जीतता है, और मलय पर्वत की चंदन माया द्वारा सुरक्षित है जो सभी सर्पों को घेरे हुए है।

हेमश्रीलोकलावण्यनिर्जितान्तःपुराङ्गनः | नानाकुसुमसंभारजानुदघ्नगृहाङ्गणः || १५ ||

hemaśrīlokalāvaṇyanirjitāntaḥpurāṅganaḥ | nānākusumasambhārajānudaghnaagṛhāṅgaṇaḥ || 15 ||

English

The golden beauty of the world surpasses the women of the inner chambers, and the courtyard of the house is adorned with various flowers reaching up to the knees.

सोने की दुनिया की सुंदरता अंतःपुर की महिलाओं को पार कर जाती है, और घर का आँगन घुटनों तक पहुँचने वाले विभिन्न फूलों से सजा हुआ है।

क्रीडार्थमृन्मयेशानजितचक्रगदाधरः | अजस्रोड्डीनरत्नौघताराढ्यखपुरान्तरः || १६ ||

krīḍārthamṛnmayeśānajitacakragadādharaḥ | ajasroḍḍīnaratnaughatārāḍhyakha-purāntaraḥ || 16 ||

English

For the sake of play, the Lord who conquered the wealth of the ocean, holding the victorious discus and mace, filled with endless gems and stars in the sky.

niśīthākhilapātālaśatacandranabhastalaḥ | svaśālabhañjikālokagītagītiraṇotkaṭaḥ || 17 ||

English

In the night, the entire underworld and the sky with a hundred moons, the sound of songs sung by the people of his own palace resounds loudly.

मायैरावणनागेन्द्रविद्रुतामरवारणः | त्रैलोक्यविभवोत्कर्षपूरितान्तःपुरान्तरः || १८ ||

māyairāvaṇanāgendravidrutāmaravāraṇaḥ | trailokyavibhavotkarṣapūritāntaḥpurāntaraḥ || 18 ||

English

With illusions, Ravana, the king of serpents, fled, and the inner palace is filled with the excellence of the wealth of the three worlds.

माया से, रावण, नागों का राजा, भाग गया, और अन्दर का महल तीनों लोकों के धन की श्रेष्ठता से भरा हुआ है।

सर्वसंपत्तिसुभगः सर्वैश्वर्यनमस्कृतः | समस्तदैत्यसामन्तवन्दितोग्रानुशासनः || १९ ||

sarvasaṃpattisubhagaḥ sarvaiśvaryanamaskṛtaḥ | samastadaityasāmantavanditogrānuśāsanaḥ || 19 ||

English

Beautiful with all prosperity, worshipped with all sovereignty, praised by all demons and ministers, with strict discipline.

महाभुजवनच्छायाविश्रान्तासुरमण्डलः | सर्वबुद्धिगणाधाररत्नमण्डलमण्डितः || २० ||

mahābhujavanaśchāyāviśrāntāsuramaṇḍalaḥ | sarvabuddhigaṇādhāraratnamaṇḍalamaṇḍitaḥ || 20 ||

English

With the shadow of the great arm forest, the circle of demons rests, adorned with the jewel circle which is the support of all intellects.

महान भुजाओं के वन की छाया में विश्राम करता हुआ असुर मण्डल, सभी बुद्धियों के आधार रत्न मण्डल से अलंकृत।

तस्योत्सादितदेवस्य कठिनोड्डामराकृतेः | बभूव विपुलं सैन्यमासुरं सुरनाशनम् || २१ ||

tasyotsāditadevasya kaṭhinoḍḍāmarākṛteḥ | babhūva vipulaṃ sainyamāsuraṃ suranāśanam || 21 ||

English

The demon, who had been awakened and was as hard as a thunderbolt, had a vast army capable of destroying the gods.

जिस असुर को जगाया गया था और जो वज्र के समान कठोर था, उसकी एक विशाल सेना थी जो देवताओं को नष्ट करने में सक्षम थी।

English

When the demon's illusory power was dormant and he was in another place, the gods quickly attacked and defeated his army, finding a weakness.

English

Then, the demon Shambara appointed commanders like Mundi, Krodha, and Druma for the protection of his army.

English

The fearsome gods, reaching the inner part, struck them down. Like eagles in the sky, they attacked the frightened sparrows.

English

The best among the demons then appointed other commanders who were agile and fierce, like the waves of the ocean.

English

The gods immediately attacked him| Enraged, he went to destroy the immortals in the fully filled heaven || 26 ||

English

Roaming there angrily, he seized the beautiful and burned the city of the guardians of the world| Then he went to his own abode || 29 ||

एवं दृढतरीभूते द्वेषे दानवदेवयोः| देवाः स्वर्गं परित्यज्य दिक्षु जग्मुरदर्शनम् || ३० ||

evaṃ dṛḍhatarībhūte dveṣe dānavadevayoḥ| devāḥ svargaṃ parityajya dikṣu jagmuradarśanam || 30 ||

English

Thus, with the enmity between the demons and the gods becoming stronger| The gods, abandoning heaven, went invisible in all directions || 30 ||

इस प्रकार, असुरों और देवताओं के बीच द्वेष और अधिक दृढ़ हो गया| देवताओं ने स्वर्ग को छोड़कर सभी दिशाओं में अदृश्य हो गए || 30 ||

अथ शम्बरदैत्येन ये ये सेनाधिनायकाः| क्रियन्ते यत्नतस्तांस्तु जघ्नुर्यत्नपराः सुराः || ३१ ||

atha śambaradaityena ye ye senādhināyakāḥ| kriyante yatnatastāṃstu jaghnuryatnaparāḥ surāḥ || 31 ||

English

Then, the gods, who were diligent, struck down all the army commanders created with effort by the demon Shambara.

यावदुद्बेगमायातः शम्बरः कोपवान्भृशम्| तार्णोऽतिमात्रमनल इव जज्वाल सोच्छ्वसन् || ३२ ||

yāvadudbegamāyātaḥ śambaraḥ kopavānbhṛśam| tārṇo’timātramanala iva jajvāla socchvasan || 32 ||

English

Until he became extremely agitated, Shambara, who was very angry, blazed like an intense fire, breathing heavily.

English

Even after searching the three worlds, he did not find the gods, as if they were a hidden treasure, despite his great efforts, being a sinner.

nirvṛttā māyayā bhīmā balapādapavāhinaḥ| udaguḥste mahāmāyāḥ pakṣakṣubdhā ivādrayaḥ || 35 ||

English

Those terrifying ones, created by illusion, with their army of foot soldiers and chariots, arose like great illusions, like mountains shaken by their wings.

वे भयानक, माया से उत्पन्न, पैदल सैनिकों और रथों की सेना के साथ, महान मायाओं की तरह उठे, मानो पंखों से हिले हुए पर्वत हों।

दामो व्यालः कटश्चेति नामभिः परिलाञ्छिताः | यथाप्राप्तैककर्तारश्चेतनामात्रधर्मिणः || ३६ ||

dāmo vyālaḥ kaṭaśceti nāmabhiḥ parilāñchitāḥ | yathāprāptaikakartāraścetanāmātradharminḥ || 36 ||

English

They are adorned with names such as Dama, Vyala, and Kata. They are the sole doers according to their nature, possessing only the attribute of consciousness.

हिन्दी

वे दाम, व्याल और कट जैसे नामों से सुशोभित हैं | वे अपनी प्रकृति के अनुसार एकमात्र कर्ता हैं, जिनमें केवल चेतना का गुण है ||

अभावात्कर्मणां ते च प्राक्तना नच वासनाः | निर्विकल्पकचिन्मात्रपरिस्पन्दैकधर्मकाः || ३७ ||

abhāvātkarmaṇāṃ te ca prāktanā na ca vāsanāḥ | nirvikalpakacinmātraparispandaiakadharmakāḥ || 37 ||

English

Due to the absence of actions, they are ancient and without impressions. They are characterized by the sole vibration of pure, undifferentiated consciousness.

कर्मजीवकलां तन्वीमसारां च मनोभिदाम् | अपुष्टां कृत्रिमामन्तश्चोदयोदयमागताः || ३८ ||

karmajīvakalāṃ tanvīmasārāṃ ca manobhidām | apuṣṭāṃ kṛtrimāmantaścodayodayamāgatāḥ || 38 ||

English

They have attained the subtle, essence-less, mind-piercing, unnourished, artificial, inner impulse and rise.

ते ह्यन्धपारम्पर्येण काकतालीयवद्भटाः प्रकृतामनुवर्तन्ते क्रियामुज्झितवासनाः || ३९ ||

te hyandhapāramparyeṇa kākatālīyavadbhaṭāḥ prakṛtāmanuvartante kriyāmujjhitavāsanāḥ || 39 ||

English

They, following the sequence of blind tradition, act like puppets, devoid of actions and impressions.

वे, अंधे परंपरा की शृंखला का अनुसरण करते हुए, कठपुतलियों की तरह कार्य करते हैं, जो कर्मों और संस्कारों से रहित हैं ||

अर्धसुप्ता यथा बालाः स्वाङ्गै रिङ्गन्ति केवलम् | वासनात्माभिमानाभ्यां हीनास्ते तद्वदेव हि || ४० ||

ardhasuptā yathā bālāḥ svāṅgai riṅganti kevalam | vāsanātmābhimānābhyāṃ hīnāste tadvadeva hi || 40 ||

English

Like half-asleep children, they merely move their own limbs. Devoid of ego and impressions, they are indeed like that.

अर्ध-सुप्त बच्चों की तरह, वे केवल अपने अंगों को हिलाते हैं | अहंकार और संस्कारों से रहित, वे वास्तव में ऐसे ही हैं ||

नाभिपातं न चापातं न विदुस्ते पलायनम् न जीवितं न मरणं न रणं न जयाजयौ || ४१ ||

nābhipātaṃ na cāpātaṃ na viduste palāyanam na jīvitaṃ na maraṇaṃ na raṇaṃ na jayājayau || 41 ||

English

They do not know the difference between falling from the sky or from the ground, nor do they know retreat, life, death, battle, victory, or defeat.

वे आकाश से या जमीन से गिरने का अंतर नहीं जानते, न ही भागना, जीवन, मृत्यु, युद्ध, विजय या पराजय जानते हैं।

केवलं सैनिकानग्रे दृष्टानाहननोद्यतान् अभिजग्मुः परानाजौ प्रहारदलिताद्रयः || ४२ ||

kevalaṃ sainikānagre dṛṣṭānāhananodyatān abhijagmuḥ parānājau prahāradalitādrayaḥ || 42 ||

English

Only seeing the soldiers in front, ready to fight, they approached the enemy in battle with their spirits uplifted by the clash of weapons.

शम्बरश्चिन्तयामास परितुष्टमनाः परम् विजेष्यते हि मे सेना मायासुरसुरक्षिता || ४३ ||

śambaraścintayāmāsa parituṣṭamanāḥ param vijeṣyate hi me senā māyāsurasurakṣitā || 43 ||

English

Shambara thought with great satisfaction, 'My army, protected by the magical demons, will surely be victorious.'

अतिबलासुरदोर्द्रुमपालिता मम चमूः स्थिरतामलमेष्यति अमरवारणदन्तविघट्टनेष्वमरपर्वतहेमशिला यथा || ४४ ||

atibalāsuradorumapālitā mama camūḥ sthiratāmalameṣyati amaravāraṇadantavighaṭṭaneṣvamaraparvatahemaśilā yathā || 44 ||

English

My army, protected by the extremely powerful demon-tree, will remain steadfast like the golden rocks of the divine mountains, unshaken even by the clashing of the tusks of the divine elephants.

मेरी सेना, जो अत्यंत शक्तिशाली असुर-वृक्ष द्वारा सुरक्षित है, दिव्य हाथियों के दाँतों की टक्कर से भी अविचलित रहेगी, जैसे दिव्य पर्वतों के स्वर्ण शिलाएँ।
