English

Sri Vasistha said: In the great kingdom of hell, those who are intoxicated with their evil deeds are difficult to conquer, as they are filled with the arrows of hope and are enemies of their own senses.

svāśrayaṃ prathamaṃ dehaṃ kṛtaghnā nāśayanti ye | te kukāryamahākośā durjayāḥ svendriyārayaḥ || 2 ||

English

Those who first destroy their own body, which is their refuge, are ungrateful and difficult to conquer, as they are the treasures of evil deeds and enemies of their own senses.

3

kalevarālayaṃ prāpya viṣayāmiṣagṛdhnukaḥ | akṣagṛdhrā vivalganti kāryākāryograpakṣiṇaḥ || 3 ||

English

Having obtained the abode of the body, those who are greedy for sensual pleasures are like vultures, wandering aimlessly, and are on the side of great wrongdoings.

English

Those who are caught in the web of discrimination are cunning, but their limbs do not seize the power of the serpent-like bonds.

āpātaramaṇīyeṣu ramate viṣayeṣu yaḥ | vivekadhanavānasmin kukalevarapattane || 5 ||

English

One who delights in seemingly attractive sensual pleasures is wealthy in discrimination in this miserable bodily existence.

6

English

Just as those who have control over their minds are the masters of their own bodies, so too are those who have conquered their senses, the servants of their minds.

vasanta iva mañjaryo vardhante śuddhabuddhayaḥ | prakṣīṇacittadarpasya nigṛhītendriyadviṣaḥ || 8 ||

English

Just as buds bloom in spring, so too do those with pure intellect flourish when their pride is diminished and their senses are controlled.

English

Until the mind is conquered through the firm practice of single-pointed concentration, one remains a servant due to the desire to fulfill wishes, and a minister due to the performance of good deeds.

prayacchati parāṃ siddhiṃ tyaktvātmānaṃ manaḥpitā | sudr̥ṣṭaḥ suparāmṛṣṭaḥ sudṛḍhaḥ supra bodhitaḥ || 13 ||

English

The mind, like a father, gives the highest perfection by renouncing itself. Well-seen, well-nourished, well-firm, well-awakened.

English

The mind, like a jewel, shines in the heart when united with good qualities. It is like the axe that cuts the tree of birth and the rising of the dawn.

diśatyevaṃ manomantrī karmāṇi śubhakarmaṇi | evaṃ manomaṇiṃ rāma bahupaṅkakalaṅkitam || 15 ||

English

Thus, the mind, like a minister, directs actions towards good deeds. O Rama, thus the mind, like a jewel, is adorned with many virtues.

The conviction 'I am this' is in vain. O wise one, abandon that impurity. Relying on the other, go to that state, drink, enjoy, you will not be bound by the mind.
