श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | य उत्तमपदालम्बी चक्रभ्रमवदास्थितः | शरीरनगरीराज्यं कुर्वन्नपि न लिप्यते || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ya uttamapadālambī cakrabhramavadāsthitaḥ | śarīranagarīrājyaṃ kurvannapi na lipyate || 1 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: The one who is established in the highest state, like a spinning wheel, does not get attached even while ruling the kingdom of the body.

हिन्दी

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: जो उत्तम पद में स्थित है, वह चक्र की तरह घूमता है, शरीर के राज्य का शासन करते हुए भी आसक्त नहीं होता।

तस्येयं भोगमोक्षार्थं तज्ज्ञस्योपवनोपमा | सुखायैव न दुःखाय स्वशरीरमहापुरी || २ ||

tasyeyaṃ bhogamokṣārthaṃ tajjñasyopavanopamā | sukhāyaiva na duḥkhāya svāśarīramahāpurī || 2 ||

English

For the one who knows, this body is like a garden for enjoyment and liberation, meant for pleasure, not for pain, a great city of the self.

हिन्दी

जिसने जाना है, उसके लिए यह शरीर भोग और मोक्ष के लिए एक उपवन की तरह है, सुख के लिए, दुःख के लिए नहीं, आत्मा की एक महान नगरी।

śrīrāma uvāca | nagarītvaṃ śarīrasya kathaṃ nāma mahāmune | etāṃ cādhivasanyogī kathaṃ rājasukahekabhāk || 3 ||

English

Sri Rama said: O great sage, how can the body be considered a city? How can one who dwells in it be the sole enjoyer of royal pleasures?

हिन्दी

श्री राम ने कहा: हे महामुनि, शरीर को नगरी कैसे माना जा सकता है? उसमें रहने वाला कैसे राजसुख का एकमात्र भोगी हो सकता है?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ramyeyaṃ dehanagarī rāma sarvaguṇānvitā | jñasyānantavilāsāḍhyā svālokārkaprakāśitā || 4 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: O Rama, this delightful city of the body is endowed with all qualities, adorned with infinite pleasures for the wise, illuminated by the light of one's own world.

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: हे राम, यह रमणीय शरीर नगरी सभी गुणों से युक्त है, ज्ञानी के लिए अनंत विलासों से सुशोभित, अपने लोक के प्रकाश से प्रकाशित।

नेत्रवातायनोद्द्योतप्रकाशभुवनान्तरा | करप्रतोलीविस्तारप्राप्तपादोपजाङ्गला || ५ ||

netravātāyanodyotaprakāśabhuvanāntarā | karapratolīvistāraprāptapādopajāṅgalā || 5 ||

English

Within this city, the eyes are like windows illuminated by the light of knowledge, and the hands are like expansive gardens adorned with the beauty of the feet.

इस नगरी में, आँखें ज्ञान के प्रकाश से प्रकाशित खिड़कियों की तरह हैं, और हाथ पैरों की सुंदरता से सुशोभित विस्तृत उपवनों की तरह हैं।

English

Her body is adorned with delicate hair and skin like a network of vines | Her ankles and fingers are slender, and her thighs are firm and rounded.

उनका शरीर कोमल बालों और त्वचा की जाल से सजा हुआ है | उनकी टखनियाँ और उँगलियाँ पतली हैं, और उनकी जाँघें मजबूत और गोल हैं।

Her breasts are like lotus buds, adorning her chest like a lake | Her shoulders are covered with dense hair, enhancing her playful charm.

English

The one who is eager to eat, with food thrown into the stomach, making a loud sound through the long throat, filled with wind, is the one who is eager to eat.

उदर में डाले गए खाने को खाने के लिए उत्सुक, लंबे गले से हवा भरी हुई, जोर से आवाज करती हुई वह खाने के लिए उत्सुक है।

English

The one whose heart is adorned with the meaning obtained as per the rules, continuously flowing through the new door, is the city of life.

जिसका हृदय नियमों के अनुसार प्राप्त अर्थ से अलंकृत है, नई द्वार से निरंतर प्रवाहित होता है, वह जीवन का शहर है।

आस्यस्फारवदादृष्टदन्तास्थिशकलाकुला मुखास्पदाभ्रमज्जिह्वाचण्डीचर्वितभोजना || १३ ||

āsyasphāravadādṛṣṭadantāsthīśakalākulā mukhāspadābhraṃjjihvācaṇḍīcarvitabhojanā || 13 ||

English

The one whose mouth is seen to be full of teeth and bones, with the tongue moving like a lightning bolt, chewing the food.

जिसका मुंह दांतों और हड्डियों से भरा हुआ दिखाई देता है, जीभ बिजली की तरह घूमती हुई, खाना चबा रही है।

romaśaṣpataracchannā karṇakoṭarakūpakā sphikśr̥ṅkhalāsthitopāntapṛṣṭhavistīrṇajaṅgalā || 14 ||

English

The one whose body is covered with hair, with the ears hidden like a well, the buttocks supported by a chain, and the back spread out like a forest.

जिसका शरीर बालों से ढका हुआ है, कान कुएँ की तरह छिपे हुए हैं, नितंब जंजीर से सहारा लिये हुए हैं, और पीठ जंगल की तरह फैली हुई है।

गुदोत्थानारघट्टान्तप्रद्रुतानन्तकर्दमा चित्तोद्यानमहीवल्गदात्मचिन्तावराङ्गना || १५ ||

gudotthānāraghaṭṭāntapradrutānantakardamā cittodyānamahīvalgadātmacintāvarāṅganā || 15 ||

English

The one whose anus is raised, making a loud sound, running endlessly in the mud, with the mind wandering in the garden of the earth, thinking about the self.

जिसका गुदा उठा हुआ है, जोर से आवाज करता हुआ, कीचड़ में अंतहीन रूप से दौड़ता हुआ, मन पृथ्वी के बगीचे में भटकता हुआ, आत्मा पर सोचता हुआ।

धीवरत्रादृढाबद्धचपलेन्द्रियमर्कटा | वदनोद्यानहसनपुष्पोद्गममनोरमा || १६ ||

dhīvaratrādṛḍhābaddhacapalendriyamarkaṭā | vadanodyānahasanapuṣpodgamamanoramā || 16 ||

English

With a firm and restless mind, like a monkey, and a face blooming like a beautiful garden of smiles.

धीर और चंचल इंद्रियों से बंधे हुए, बंदर की तरह, और मुस्कुराहटों के सुंदर उद्यान की तरह खिले हुए चेहरे वाला।

स्वशरीरमनोज्ञस्य सर्वसौभाग्यसुन्दरी | सुखायैव न दुःखाय परमाय हिताय च || १७ ||

svaśarīramanojñasya sarvasaubhāgyasundarī | sukhāyaiva na duḥkhāya paramāya hitāya ca || 17 ||

English

For the one who finds their own body beautiful, who is the epitome of all good fortune and beauty, for happiness, not for sorrow, for the ultimate benefit.

जिसका अपना शरीर मनोहर है, जो सभी सौभाग्य और सुंदरता की पराकाष्ठा है, सुख के लिए, दुःख के लिए नहीं, परम हित के लिए।

अज्ञस्येयमनन्तानां दुःखानां कोशमालिका | ज्ञस्य त्वियमनन्तानां सुखानां कोशमालिका || १८ ||

ajñasyeyamanantānāṃ duḥkhānāṃ kośamālikā | jñasy tv iyamanantānāṃ sukhānāṃ kośamālikā || 18 ||

English

For the ignorant, this is a treasure chest of endless sorrows. For the wise, this is a treasure chest of endless joys.

अज्ञानी के लिए, यह अनंत दुःखों का खजाना है। ज्ञानी के लिए, यह अनंत सुखों का खजाना है।

किंचिदस्यां प्रनष्टायां ज्ञस्य नष्टमरिन्दम | स्थितायां संस्थितं सर्वं तेनेयं ज्ञसुखावहा || १९ ||

kiṃcidasyāṃ pranaṣṭāyāṃ jñasya naṣṭamariṃdama | sthitāyāṃ saṃsthitaṃ sarvaṃ teneyaṃ jñasukhāvahā || 19 ||

English

O conqueror of enemies, if this is slightly lost, the wise one loses. When it is established, everything is established. Therefore, this brings joy to the wise.

हिन्दी

हे शत्रुओं के विजेता, यदि यह थोड़ा सा खो जाता है, तो ज्ञानी को हानि होती है। जब यह स्थापित होता है, तो सब कुछ स्थापित होता है। इसलिए, यह ज्ञानी को सुख देता है।

यदेनां ज्ञः समारुह्य संसारे विहरत्यलम् | अशेषभोगमोक्षार्थं तेनेयं ज्ञरथः स्मृतः || २० ||

yadenāṃ jñaḥ samāruhya saṃsāre viharatyalaṃ | aśeṣabhogamokṣārthaṃ teneyaṃ jñarathaḥ smṛtaḥ || 20 ||

English

When the wise one ascends it and enjoys the world sufficiently, for the sake of complete enjoyment and liberation, it is remembered as the chariot of the wise.

हिन्दी

जब ज्ञानी इस पर चढ़कर संसार में पर्याप्त रूप से आनंद लेता है, पूर्ण भोग और मोक्ष के लिए, तो यह ज्ञानी का रथ कहलाता है।

शब्दरूपरसस्पर्शगन्धबन्धुश्रियो यतः | अनयैव हि लभ्यन्ते तेनेयं ज्ञस्य लाभदा || २१ ||

śabdarūparasasparśagandhabandhuśriyo yataḥ | anayaiva hi labhyante teneyaṃ jñasya lābhadā || 21 ||

English

From sound, form, taste, touch, and smell, one can attain these. Therefore, this knowledge is the giver of gains.

शब्द, रूप, रस, स्पर्श और गंध से ये प्राप्त होते हैं। इसलिए यह ज्ञान लाभदायक है।

सुखदुःखक्रियाजालं यदेषोद्वहति स्वयम् | तदेषा राम सर्वज्ञसर्ववस्तुभरक्षमा || २२ ||

sukhaduḥkhakriyājālaṃ yadeṣodvahati svayam | tadeṣā rāma sarvajñasarvavastubharakṣamā || 22 ||

English

The web of happiness and sorrow is carried by oneself. That is the essence of all-knowing and all-bearing, O Rama.

हिन्दी

सुख और दुःख की जाल अपने आप से उठाई जाती है। यह सर्वज्ञ और सर्ववस्तुभरक्षमा का सार है, हे राम।

तस्यां शरीरपुर्यां हि राज्यं कुर्वन्गतज्वरः | ज्ञस्तिष्ठति गतव्यग्रः स्वपुर्यामिव वासवः || २३ ||

tasyāṃ śarīrapuryāṃ hi rājyaṃ kurvangatajvaraḥ | jñastiṣṭhati gatavyagraḥ svapuryāmiva vāsavaḥ || 23 ||

English

In the body, which is like a city, the knower resides, free from fever, like Indra in his own city.

शरीर में, जो कि एक नगर की तरह है, ज्ञानी ज्वर से मुक्त होकर रहता है, जैसे इंद्र अपने नगर में रहता है।

न क्षिपत्यवटाटोपे मनोमत्ततुरङ्गमम् | न लोभदुर्द्रुमादाय प्रज्ञापुत्रीं प्रयच्छति || २४ ||

na kṣipatyavaṭāṭope manomattaturagamam | na lobhadurdumādāya prajñāputrīṃ prayacchati || 24 ||

English

He does not cast the mind, which is like a mad elephant, into the deep forest of desire. He does not give away the daughter of wisdom to the wicked tree of greed.

हिन्दी

वह मन को, जो एक पागल हाथी की तरह है, इच्छा के गहरे जंगल में नहीं फेंकता। वह बुद्धि की बेटी को लोभ के बुरे पेड़ को नहीं देता।

अज्ञानपरराष्ट्रं च न रन्ध्रं त्वस्य पश्यति | संसारारिभयस्यान्तर्मूलान्येव निकृन्तति || २५ ||

ajñānapararāṣṭraṃ ca na randhraṃ tvasy paśyati | saṃsārāribhayasyāntarmūlānyeva nikṛntati || 25 ||

English

He does not see the flaw in the foreign land of ignorance. He uproots the very roots of the fear of the enemy of the world.

हिन्दी

वह अज्ञान के पराये राष्ट्र में दोष नहीं देखता। वह संसार के शत्रु के भय की जड़ें ही उखाड़ फेंकता है।

तृष्णासारपरावर्ते कामसंभोगदुर्ग्रहे | न निमज्जति पर्यस्तः सुखदुःखप्रदेवने || २६ ||

tṛṣṇāsāraparāvarte kāmasaṃbhogadurgrahe | na nimajjati paryastaḥ sukhaduḥkhapradevane || 26 ||

English

In the whirlpool of desires and the difficult grasp of sensual pleasures, one who is overwhelmed does not sink in the lamentations of joy and sorrow.

हिन्दी

इच्छाओं के भंवर और इंद्रिय सुखों के कठिन आग्रह में, जो व्यक्ति डूब जाता है वह सुख-दुःख की शिकायत में नहीं डूबता।

करोत्यविरतं स्नानं बहिरन्तरवीक्षणात् | सरित्संगमतीर्थेषु मनोरथगतः क्रमात् || २७ ||

karotyavirataṃ snānaṃ bahirantaravīkṣaṇāt | saritsaṃgamatīrtheṣu manorathagataḥ kramāt || 27 ||

English

One performs continuous purification through external and internal observation, gradually attaining the state of fulfillment at the confluence of rivers and sacred places.

कोई बाहरी और आंतरिक दृष्टि से निरंतर शुद्धि करता है, धीरे-धीरे नदियों और पवित्र स्थानों के संगम पर पूर्णता की अवस्था प्राप्त करता है।

सकलाक्षजनादृश्यसुखप्रेक्षापराङ्मुखः | ध्याननाम्नि सुखं नित्यं तिष्ठत्यन्तःपुरान्तरे || २८ ||

sakalākṣajanādṛśyasukhaprekṣāparāṅmukhaḥ | dhyānanāmni sukhaṃ nityaṃ tiṣṭhatyantaḥpurāntare || 28 ||

English

One who is turned away from the visible pleasures of all senses, always finds happiness in meditation, residing within the inner sanctum.

हिन्दी

जो सभी इंद्रियों के दृश्य सुखों से मुँह मोड़ लेता है, वह हमेशा ध्यान में सुख पाता है, आंतरिक मंदिर में निवास करता है।

सुखावहैषा नगरी नित्यं वै विदितात्मनः | भोगमोक्षप्रदा चैषा शक्रस्येवामरावती || २९ ||

sukhāvahaiṣā nagarī nityaṃ vai viditātmanaḥ | bhogamokṣapradā caiṣā śakrasyevāmarāvatī || 29 ||

English

This city is always a source of happiness for the self-realized. It bestows both enjoyment and liberation, like Amaravati for Indra.

हिन्दी

यह नगरी हमेशा आत्मज्ञानी के लिए सुख का स्रोत है। यह भोग और मोक्ष दोनों देती है, जैसे अमरावती इंद्र के लिए।

स्थितया संस्थितं सर्वं किंचिन्नष्टं न नष्टया | यया पुर्या महीयस्या सा कथं न सुखावहा || ३० ||

sthitayā saṃsthitaṃ sarvaṃ kiñcinnaṣṭaṃ na naṣṭayā | yayā puryā mahīyasyā sā kathaṃ na sukhāvahā || 30 ||

English

By its existence, everything is established; nothing is lost by its loss. How can such a magnificent city not be a source of happiness?

इसके अस्तित्व से सब कुछ स्थापित है; इसके नष्ट होने से कुछ भी नष्ट नहीं होता। ऐसी महान नगरी सुख का स्रोत कैसे नहीं हो सकती?

विनष्टे देहनगरे ज्ञस्य नष्टं न किंचन | आक्रान्तकुम्भाकाशस्य खस्य कुम्भक्षये यथा || ३१ ||

vinaṣṭe dehanagare jñasya naṣṭaṃ na kiṃcana | ākrāntakumbhākāśasya khasya kumbhakṣaye yathā || 31 ||

English

When the body perishes, nothing is lost for the knower | Just as the space within a pot is not lost when the pot is destroyed

विद्यमानं घटं वायुः किंचित्स्पृशति नास्थितम् | यथा तथैव देही स्वां शरीरनगरीमिमाम् || ३२ ||

vidyamānaṃ ghaṭaṃ vāyuḥ kiṃcitspr̥śati nāsthitam | yathā tathaiva dehī svāṃ śarīranagarīmimām || 32 ||

English

The wind touches the existing pot, not the non-existent one | Similarly, the embodied self experiences its own body

अत्रस्थः पुरुषो भोगानात्मा सर्वगतोऽपि सन् | विश्वकल्पकृतान्भुक्त्वा पुंसामधिगतार्थभाक् || ३३ ||

atrasthaḥ puruṣo bhogānātmā sarvagato'pi san | viśvakalpakr̥tānbhuktvā puṃsāmadhigatārthabhāk || 33 ||

English

The self, residing here, enjoys experiences, being all-pervading | Having enjoyed the creations of the universe, it is the attainer of the desired objects of men

kurvannapi na kurvāṇaḥ samastārthakriyonmukhaḥ | kadācitprakr̥tānsarvānkāryārthānanutiṣṭhati || 34 ||

English

Although acting, it does not act, being inclined towards all activities | Sometimes it performs all natural actions

Sometimes, playfully, it ascends a moving chariot | With unstruck motion, the pure mind enjoys the beautiful

tatrastho lokasundaryā satataṃ śītalāṅgayā | ramate rāmayā maitryā nityaṃ hṛdayasaṃsthitaḥ || 36 ||

English

There, he always enjoys with the beautiful and cool-bodied Lakshmi, who is eternally seated in his heart with affection.

Just as the eye effortlessly falls on objects without attachment, so too does the wise person engage in actions without desire.

English

The wise person neither takes away what is attained by the senses nor gives what is not attained. Thus, the wise person remains complete.

The tendency of the mind to indulge in pleasures should be destroyed at the very beginning, like the sprouting of a poisonous seed.

A king who is freed from bondage is satisfied with just a morsel of food. One who is bound by others does not feel content and does not consider the kingdom great.
