siddhāntakāle praśnoktireṣā tava virājate | prāvṛṣīva hi kekoktiryuktā śaradi haṃsagīḥ || 8 ||

In the time of establishing the doctrine, this question of yours shines forth | Like the call of the peacock in the rainy season, it is appropriate in the autumn like the call of the swan

ayaṃ prakṛta ārabdho manonirṇaya uttamaḥ | yadvāśājjajanatājanma tadākarṇaya suvrat || 10 ||

Thus, this nature of the mind which is the abode of thoughts is called karma | O Rama, this has been determined by all seekers of liberation

śṛṇu darśanabhedena tannāmābhimatākṛtimvāgmināṃ vadatāṃ yātaṃ citrābhiḥ śāstradṛṣṭibhiḥ || 12 ||

yaṃ yaṃ bhāvamupādatte mano mananacañcalamtattāmeti ghanāmodamantaḥsthaḥ pavano yathā || 13 ||

English

Whichever state the mind takes on, it becomes that, just as the wind within takes on the scent of the object it touches.

tatastameva nirṇīya tameva ca vikalpayanantaḥsthayā rañjanayā rañjayansvāmahaṃkṛtim || 14 ||

15

yanmayaṃ hi mano rāma dehastadanu tadvaśaḥtattāmāyāti gandhāntaḥ pavano gandhatāmiva || 16 ||

English

O Rama, the mind is indeed made of that (object of thought), and the body follows the mind. Just as the wind takes on the fragrance of the scent it carries.

buddhīndriyeṣu valgatsu karmeindriyagaṇastataḥ | sphurati svata evorvī rajolola ivānile || 17 ||

English

When the cognitive senses are active, the organs of action naturally become active, like dust particles in the wind.

karmeindriyagaṇe kṣubdhe svaśaktiṃ praṇayaty alam | karma niṣpadyate sphāraṃ pāṃsujālam ivānile || 18 ||

English

When the organs of action are disturbed, they exert their power, and the action is fully accomplished, like a web of dust in the wind.

evaṃ hi manasaḥ karma karmabījaṃ manaḥ smṛtam | abhinnaiva tayoḥ sattā yathā kusumagandhayoḥ || 19 ||

English

Thus, the action of the mind is considered the seed of action; the existence of both is inseparable, like the fragrance and the flower.

tathā kriyāṃ tatphalatāṃ niṣpādayati cādarāt | tatastameva cāsvādam anubhūyāśu badhyate || 21 ||

English

Thus, it accomplishes the action and its result with respect, and then, experiencing that taste, it is quickly bound.

tadevānyatvamādatte khamahorātrayoriva | yadatucchamanāyāsam anupādhi gatabhramam || 48 ||

English

That very thing assumes a different form, like the day and night in the sky, which is insignificant, effortless, without any basis, and delusional.

tattatkalpanayātītaṃ tatsukhāyaiva kalpate | śūnya eva kusūle tu siṃho'stīti bhayaṃ yathā || 49 ||

English

That which is beyond all imaginations is imagined for the sake of happiness, just like the fear of a lion in an empty well.

śūnya eva śarīre'ntar baddho'smīti bhayaṃ tathā | śūnya eva kusūle tu prekṣya siṃho na labhyate || 50 ||

English

Similarly, the fear that 'I am bound within the empty body' is also like the fear of a lion in an empty well, which upon examination, is found to be non-existent.

tathā saṃsārabandhārthaḥ prekṣito'sau na labhyate | idaṃ jagadayaṃ cāhamiti saṃbhrāntamutthitam || 51 ||

English

Similarly, the purpose of worldly bondage, when examined, is found to be non-existent. The delusion that 'this is the world, and this is me' arises.

bālānāṃ madhyame kāle chāyā vaitālikī yathā | kalpanāvaśato jantorbāvābhāvaśubhāśubhāḥ || 52 ||

English

In the middle of childhood, like the shadow of a ghost, the states of being and non-being, good and bad, arise from imagination.

kṣaṇādasattāmāyānti sattāmapi punaḥ kṣaṇāt | mātaiva gṛhiṇībhāvagṛhītā kaṇṭhalambinī || 53 ||

English

In an instant, non-existence becomes existence and vice versa. The mother, embracing the role of a housewife, becomes a necklace-wearer.

karoti gṛhiṇīkāryaṃ suratānandadā satī | kāntaiva mātṛbhāvena gṛhītā kaṇṭhalambinī || 54 ||

English

She performs the duties of a housewife, giving joy in lovemaking, being a beloved mother, embracing the role with a necklace.

nūnaṃ vismārayatyeva manmathaṃ mātṛbhāvanāt | bhāvānusāriphaladaṃ padārthaughamavekṣya ca || 55 ||

English

Certainly, the maternal feeling makes one forget Cupid, considering the consequences of emotions and the multitude of objects.

na jñeneha padārtheṣu rūpamekamudīryate | dṛḍhabhāvanayā ceto yadyathā bhāvayatyalam || 56 ||

English

In this world, no single form is perceived in objects. The mind, through firm imagination, perceives things as it wishes.

tattatphalaṃ tadākāraṃ tāvatkālaṃ prapaśyati na tadasti na yatsatyam na tadasti na yanmṛṣā || 57 ||

English

One sees the result and form of that for a certain period. That which is true does not exist, and that which is false does not exist.

yadyathā yena nirṇītaṃ tattathā tena lakṣyate bhāvitākāśamātaṅgaṃ vyomahastitayā manaḥ || 58 ||

English

Whatever is determined in a certain way by a certain means, that is perceived in the same way by that means. The mind, like an elephant in the sky, is perceived as an elephant in the sky.

vyomakānanamātaṅgīṃ vyomasthāmanudhāvati tasmātsaṃkalpameva tvaṃ sarvabhāvamayātmakam || 59 ||

English

One pursues the elephant in the sky forest, which is in the sky. Therefore, you should abandon all mental constructs that are the essence of all beings.

tyaja rāma suṣuptasthaḥ svātmanaiva bhavātmanaḥ maṇirhi pratibimbānāṃ pratiṣedhakriyāṃ prati || 60 ||

English

O Rama, abandon the state of deep sleep and realize the self by the self. Indeed, the gem (self) is the obstacle to the reflections.

na śakto jaḍabhāvena natu rāma bhavādṛśaḥ yadātmani jagadrāma taveha pratibimbati || 61 ||

English

O Rama, you are not capable of being inert, nor are you like the world. O Rama, the world reflects in your self.

tadavastviti nirṇīya mā tenāgaccha rañjanam | tadeva satyamiti vāpyabhinnaṃ paramātmanaḥ || 62 ||

English

Decide that it is so, do not let it cause you distress. That alone is the truth, it is not different from the Supreme Self.

matvāntastvamanādyantaṃ bhāvayātmānamātmanā | cetasi pratibimbannti ye bhāvāstava rāghava | rañjayantvanysaktatvānmā te tvāṃ sphaṭikaṃ yathā || 63 ||

English

Consider yourself as eternal and meditate on the self with the self. The feelings that reflect in your mind, O Raghava, should not disturb you like a crystal.

sphaṭikamamananaṃ yathā viśanti prakaṭatayā na ca rañjanā vicitrā | iha hi vimananaṃ tathā viśantu prakaṭatayā bhuvanaiṣaṇā bhavantam || 64 ||

English

Just as various colors appear in a crystal without affecting it, similarly, let the desires of the world appear in you without affecting you.
