śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | etatte kathitaṃ sarvaṃ manorūpanirūpaṇam | mayā rāghava nānyena kenacinnāma hetunā || 1 ||

English

Vasishtha said: I have explained to you, O Raghava, the entire description of the nature of the mind. There is no other cause for this.

dṛḍhaniścayavacceto yadbhāvayati bhūriśaḥ | tattāṃ yātyanalāśleṣādayaḥpiṇḍo'gnitāmiva || 2 ||

English

The mind, which is firm in resolve, repeatedly contemplates that which it desires. Just as a lump of iron, through contact with fire, attains the nature of fire.

bhāvābhāvagrahotsargadṛśaścetanakalpitāḥ | nāsatyā nāpi satyāstā manaścāpalakāritāḥ || 3 ||

English

The perceptions of existence and non-existence, acceptance and rejection, are creations of the conscious mind. They are neither real nor unreal, and the mind is fickle.

mano mohe tu kartṛ syātkāraṇaṃ ca jagatsthiteḥ | viśvarūpatayaive daṃ tanoti malinaṃ manaḥ || 4 ||

English

In delusion, the mind becomes the doer and the cause of the world's existence. In the form of the universe, it indeed spreads this impure mind.

mano hi puruṣo nāma taṃ niyojya śubhe pathi | tajjayaikāntasādhyā hi sarvā jagati bhūtayaḥ || 5 ||

English

Indeed, the mind is called the person. By directing it towards the auspicious path, all beings in the world can be accomplished solely through the conquest of the mind.

puruṣaśceccharīraṃ syātkathaṃ śukro mahāmatiḥ | agamadvividhākāraṃ janmāntaraśatabhramam || 6 ||

English

If the soul were the body, how could the wise Shukra enter into various forms in hundreds of births?

ataścittaṃ hi puruṣaḥ śarīraṃ cetya meva hi | yanmayaṃ ca bhavatyetattadavāpnotyasaṃśayam || 7 ||

English

Therefore, the mind is indeed the soul, and the body is merely the instrument. Whatever is made of this, one attains without doubt.

yadatuccham anāyāsam anupādhi gatabhramam | yatnāt tadanusaṃdhānaṃ kuru tattāmavāpsyasi || 8 ||

English

Whatever is insignificant, effortless, without any support, and free from delusion, strive to contemplate that, and you will attain that state.

abhipatati manaḥsthitaṃ śarīraṃ natu vapurācaritaṃ manaḥ prayāti | abhipatatu tavātra tena satyaṃ subhaga manaḥ prajahātvasatyamanyat || 9 ||

English

The mind, which is established in the body, does not move, but the body, which is governed by the mind, moves. Therefore, O fortunate one, let your mind be established in truth and abandon all else.
