14.19.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | jīvabījaṃ paraṃ brahma sarvatra khamiva sthitam | tena jīvodarajagatyapi jīvo'styaneakdhā || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: The seed of the individual self is the highest Brahman itself, present everywhere like space. Because of this, even inside the world within a living being's own body, life exists in many separate forms on its own.

ciddhanaikaghanātmatvājjīvāntarjīvajātayaḥ | kadalīdalavatsanti kīṭā iva dharodare || 2 ||

Because consciousness is one single dense whole, many kinds of living beings exist within a single living being, just as many layers lie inside a banana trunk, just as worms live inside the earth.

yo yo nāma yathā grīṣme kalpasvedādbhavetkṛmiḥ | yadyaddṛśyaṃ śuddhacitkhaṃ tajjīvo bhavati svataḥ || 3 ||

Just as, in summer, a small creature is born on its own from moisture, whatever name it may go by, in the same way, whatever we see, since it is really pure consciousness itself, becomes a living being on its own.

yathā yathā yatante te jīvakāḥ svātmasiddhaye | tathā tathā bhavantyāśu vicitropāsanakramaiḥ || 4 ||

Whatever these small living beings work hard to achieve for themselves, they quickly become exactly that, through their own different ways of worship.

devāndevayajo yānti yakṣā yakṣāntvrajanti hi | brahma brahmayajo yānti yadatucchaṃ tadāśrayet || 5 ||

Those who worship gods reach the gods. Those who worship yakshas reach the yakshas. Those who worship Brahman reach Brahman. So one should hold on to what is not small, the highest one.

sa mukto bhṛguputro hi nirmalatvātsvasaṃvidaḥ | badhdhaḥ prathamadṛṣṭena dṛśyenāśu svabhāvataḥ || 6 ||

Bhrigu's son is indeed free, because his own awareness is pure. Yet the moment he sees a first thing, he quickly becomes bound to it, by his very nature.

bhuvijātā parimlānā bālā yatprathamaṃ puraḥ | saṃvitprāpnoti tadrūpā bhavatyanā nakācana || 7 ||

A young girl, born in this world, weak and faded, whatever she first perceives in front of her, her awareness takes on exactly that form; it becomes nothing else at all.

śrīrāma uvāca | jāgratsvapnadaśābhedaṃ bhagavanvaktumarhasi | kathaṃ ca jāgrajjāgratsyātsvapno jāgradbhamaḥ katham || 8 ||

Sri Rama said: Master, please tell me the difference between the waking state and the dream state. How can what is called waking really be waking? And how can a dream become a waking illusion, seeming just like being awake?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | sthirapratyayayuktaṃ yattajjāgraditi kathyate | asthirapratyayaṃ yatsyāttatsvapnaḥ samudāhṛtaḥ || 9 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Whatever comes with a steady, lasting sense of reality is called waking. Whatever comes with a sense that is unstable and does not last is called a dream.

jāgrattve kṣaṇadṛṣṭaḥ syātsvapnaḥ kālāntare sthitaḥ | tajjāgratsvapnatāmeti svapno jāgrattvamṛcchati || 10 ||

In the waking state, if something is seen only for an instant, it behaves like a dream. But if a dream lasts over a stretch of time, it behaves like waking. So the waking state can turn into a dream, and a dream can turn into waking.

jāgratsvapnadaśābhedo na sthirāsthirate vinā | samaḥ sadaiva sarvatra samasto'nubhavo'nayoḥ || 11 ||

There is no real difference between the waking state and the dream state except this: one is stable and the other is unstable. Apart from that, the experience of both is always the same everywhere, in every way.

svapno'pi svapnasamaye sthairyājjāgrattvamṛcchati | asthairyājjāgradevāste svapnastādṛśabodhataḥ || 12 ||

Even a dream, while it is happening, becomes like waking if it feels steady and stable. And even the waking state becomes like a dream if it feels unstable. It all depends on how steady that awareness feels.

svapno'pi jāgradbuddhyṃśo jāgrattvamanugacchati | svapnatā svapnabuddhyā tu yathāsaṃvedanaṃ sthitam || 13 ||

Even a dream, when part of it is felt with the conviction of being awake, takes on the nature of waking. And being a dream, when felt with the conviction of it being a dream, stays exactly as a dream. It all depends on how it is experienced.

yattu yāvatsthiraṃ buddhaṃ tattāvajjāgraducyate | kṣaṇabhaṅgāttu tatsvapno yathā bhavati tacchṛṇu || 14 ||

Whatever is known as steady, for as long as it stays steady, is called waking. But the very same thing, when it breaks apart in an instant, is a dream. Listen to how this happens.

jīvadhātuḥ śarīre'ntarvidyate yena jīvyate | tejo vīryaṃ jīvadhāturityādyabhidhamaṅga yat || 15 ||

There is a life-force inside the body, by which a person lives. Dear one, this is what is called by such names as vital energy, vigor, or the life-force.

vyavahārī yadā kāyo manasā karmaṇā girā | bhavettadā marunnunno jīvadhātuḥ prasarpati || 16 ||

When the body becomes active through the mind, through actions, and through speech, then the life-force, driven by the breath, spreads through the body.

tasminprasarpatyangeṣu sarvā saṃvidudeti hi | dṛṣṭatvāt praiti cittākhyamantarlīnajagadbhramam || 17 ||

As that life-force spreads through the limbs, all awareness rises up. Because it now appears as something seen, it turns into what we call the mind, the illusion of a whole world hidden inside.

īkṣaṇādiṣu randhreṣu prasarantī bahirmayam | nānākāravikārāḍhyaṃ rūpamātmani paśyati || 18 ||

Spreading out through openings like the eyes and the other senses, it sees within itself a shape that seems to be outside, full of many different forms and changes.

sthiratvāttattathaivātha jāgradityavagamyate | jāgratkramam iti proktaḥ suṣuptādikramaṃ śrṇu || 19 ||

Because it stays steady in that same way, this state is understood as waking. This is called the waking process. Now listen to the process of deep sleep and what comes after.

manasā karmaṇā vācā yadā kṣubhyati no vapuḥ | śāntātmā tiṣṭhati svastho jīvadhātustadā tv asau || 20 ||

When the body is not disturbed by the mind, by action, or by speech, then that living force stays calm and settled within itself.

samatāmāgatervātairkṣobhyate na hṛdambare nirvātasadane dīpo yathā'ālokaikakārakaḥ || 21 ||

When the breaths have become even and settled, the space of the heart is not disturbed by them, just as a lamp in a room with no wind burns alone and gives a steady light.

tataḥ sarati nāṅgeṣu saṃvitkṣubhyati tena no na cekṣaṇādīnyāyāti randhrāṇyāyāti no bahiḥ || 22 ||

Then that awareness does not spread through the limbs and is not disturbed by the breath. It does not go out through the openings such as the eyes, it does not go outward at all.

jīvo'ntareva sphurati tailasaṃvidyathā tile śītasaṃviddhim iva snehasaṃvidyathā ghṛte || 23 ||

The living force then stirs only within, like the oil hidden inside a sesame seed, like the coldness hidden inside frost, like the richness hidden inside ghee.

jīvākārā kalā kācicciitiḥ svacchatayātmani daśāmāyāti sauṣuptiṃ saumyavātāṃ vicetanām || 24 ||

A small part of awareness, taking the shape of the living force, settles by its own clearness into the state called deep sleep, a state where the breath is calm and gentle and ordinary awareness is absent.

jñātvā vaicitryuparate sāmyaṃ vyavaharannapi jāgratsvapnasuṣupteṣu saṃbuddhasturyavānsmṛtaḥ || 25 ||

The one who has known that sameness once every sense of difference has ended, and who still goes about waking, dream, and deep sleep like anyone else, that awakened person is remembered as one who has reached the fourth state.

suṣupte saumyatāṃ yātaiḥ prāṇaiḥ saṃcālyate yadā| sa jīvadhātuḥ sā saṃvittatascittatayoditā || 26 ||

In deep sleep, when that living force, that same awareness, is stirred a little by the breath that has grown gentle, it then rises up in the form of thought.

svāntaḥsaṃsthajagajjālaṃ bhāvābhāvaiḥ kramabhramaiḥ| paśyati svāntarevāśu sphāraṃ bīja iva drumam || 27 ||

Within itself it quickly sees the whole web of the world sitting inside it, appearing and disappearing in a sequence that only seems real, spread out just as a tree is spread out inside a seed.

jīvadhāturyadā vātaiḥ kiṃcitsaṃkṣubhyate bhṛśam| tato'smyahaṃ supta iti paśyatyātmani khe gatim || 28 ||

When the living force is stirred quite strongly by the breath, it then sees within itself, in that inner space, the thought moving, I am asleep.

yadāmbhasā plāvyate'sau tadā vāryādisaṃbhramam| antarevānubhavati svāmodaṃ kusumaṃ yathā || 29 ||

When that sleeping body is drenched with water, it then feels within itself the stir of water and things like it, held inside just as a flower holds its own scent.

yadā pittādinākrāntastadā grīṣmādisaṃbhramam| antarevāmubhavati sphāraṃ bahirivākhilam || 30 ||

When the body is overcome by excess bile, it then feels within itself the stir of summer heat and things like it, spread out fully as if it were happening outside.

raktāpūrṇo raktavarṇāndeśānkālānbahiryathāpaśyatyanubhavātmatvāttatraiva ca nimajjati || 31 ||

One whose body is full of excess blood sees, as if it were outside him, places and times colored red, and because experience itself is the nature of the self, he sinks completely into that very experience.

sevate vāsanāṃ yāṃ tāṃ so'ntaḥ paśyati nidritaḥpavanakṣobhito randhrairbahirakṣādibhiryathā || 32 ||

Whatever inclination he keeps feeding, the sleeping person sees that very thing within himself, just as, stirred by the breath, one sees the outside world through openings such as the eyes.

anākrāntendriyacchidro yataḥ kṣubdho'ntareva saḥsaṃvidānubhavatyāśu sa svapna iti kathyate || 33 ||

Since the openings of the senses are not taken over by the breath, and the stir stays only within, he quickly knows that state through awareness alone, and this is called a dream.

samākrāntendriyacchidro yaḥ kṣubdho vāyunā yadāparipaśyati tajjāgradityāhurmunisattamāḥ || 34 ||

When the openings of the senses are fully taken over, and a person, stirred by the breath, sees everything clearly, the greatest sages call that state waking.

iti viditavatā tvayādhunāntaḥ prathitamahāmatineha satyatākhyāasati jagati naiva bhāvanīyā mṛtihatisaṃhṛtidoṣabhāvanī yā || 35 ||

Now that you have understood this, and your understanding has grown great and clear within you, you must never think of this unreal world as real. That very idea of it being real is the flaw that breeds death, destruction, and dissolution.
