14.18.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācasarvasaṃsṛtikhaṇḍeṣu bhūtabījakalātmanaḥtanmātrapratibhāsasya pratibhāsena bhinnatā || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said, in every one of the countless parts of this whole round of worldly life, each part carrying within it a portion of the seed of the elements, the subtle element that appears there seems different from part to part, but that difference is only in how it looks, not in what it truly is.

pravṛttirvā nivṛttirvā tanmātrāvṛttipūrvakamsarvasya jīvajātasya suṣuptatvādanantaram || 2 ||

For every living being, right after deep sleep, whether it becomes active or stays still, this only happens once the subtle element has returned.

pravṛttibhājo ye jīvāste tanmātrapradarśinaḥtanmātraikatayā sargānmithaḥ paśyanti kalpitān || 3 ||

Those living beings who become active are the ones who bring the subtle element into view. And because that subtle element is the same in all of them, they see each other's imagined worlds.

tanmātraikyapraṇālena citrāḥ sargajalāśayāḥparasparaṃ saṃmilanti ghanatāṃ yānti cābhitaḥ || 4 ||

Through this one shared channel of the subtle element, the many different pools of creation flow into each other, and on every side they thicken into one solid mass.

kecitpṛthaksthitigatāḥ pṛthageva layaṃ gatāḥkecinmithaḥ saṃmilitā jagadguñjā sthitākṣatā || 5 ||

Some of these stay apart from the start and dissolve apart, alone. Others mix together with each other and remain as whole, unbroken world bubbles.

jagadruñjāsahasrāṇi yatrāsaṃkhyānyaṇāvaṇau| aparaspiralagnāni kānanaṃ brahma nāma tat || 6 ||

In atom after atom there sit thousands upon thousands of these world bubbles, too many to count, never touching one another, and that whole gathering of them is what is called Brahman.

mithaḥ saṃmilanenaitā ghanatāṃ samupāgatāḥ| yadyadyatra yathā rūḍhaṃ tattatpaśyati netarat || 7 ||

By mixing into each other this way, these become dense and solid. And wherever something has become fixed as real, a person sees only that thing there, nothing else.

vartamānaṃ manorājyaṃ naiṣphalyaṃ samupāgatā| sā kṛttirmansaso jñeyā tasya jīvaparamparā || 8 ||

This present imagined world of the mind has stopped being fruitless, it has become real. Know that this is the mind's own making, the chain of living beings it produces.

parasparaṃ saṃmilatāṃ sargāṇāṃ rūḍhabhāvinām| dehasattā bhṛśaṃ rūḍhā dehābhāvastu vismṛtiḥ || 9 ||

As these worlds mix into each other and settle into being fixed and real, the existence of the body becomes very deeply fixed as real. Not having a body, on the other hand, is simply forgotten.

dehatvaparirūḍhatvācciddhenā vismṛtātmanā| mithyānubhūtā'avidyā tu śuddhā kaṭakatāmitā || 10 ||

Because being a body has become so deeply fixed as real, the pure gold of consciousness forgets its own true self. This falsely felt thing we call ignorance, even though it is pure at its core, has simply taken the shape of a bangle, the way gold takes the shape of a bangle.

sarveṣāṃ jīvarāśīnāmātmāvasthātrayaṃ śritaḥ | jāgratsvapnasuṣuptyākhyamatra deho na kāraṇam || 12 ||

For every single living being, the true self rests in three states, called waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. Here, the body is not the cause of this.

evamātmani jīvatve satyavasthātrayātmani | nacāmbhasīva vīcitvamasminkacati dehatā || 13 ||

So when the self takes the form of a living being, its whole nature is just these three states. Bodyhood does not stand out in it as something separate, just as being a wave does not stand out in water as something separate from the water.

citkalāpadamāsādya suṣuptāntapadasthitam | buddho nivartete jīvo mūḍhaḥ sarge pravartate || 14 ||

When a living being reaches this point, a mere trace of consciousness standing right at the edge just past deep sleep, the wise one stops there, while the ignorant one moves forward into the world.

yathā śuddhaḥ prāṇamārutparaprāṇādivedanāt | vetti vedyam manorājyaṃ tathā sargāntarāśrayam || 15 ||

Just as the pure self comes to know the mind's imagined world, a dream, by noticing the breath, the wind, and the other vital airs, in the same way it comes to know whatever rests inside a different world.

sarvagatvācchitaḥ kaścitparasargeṇa nīyate | sarge sarge pṛthagrūpaṃ santi sargāntarāṇyapi || 16 ||

Because consciousness is present everywhere, some part of it gets carried along by another being's world. Each world has its own separate form, and inside each world there are further worlds too.

174.18.17

teṣvapyantasthasargaughāḥ kadalīdalapīṭhavat | sarvasargāntarādūraṃ patrapīvaravṛttimat || 17 ||

Inside those worlds too, there are whole streams of further worlds, layered like the sheaths of a banana tree trunk, each one set far apart from all the others, yet each just as thick and solid as those very leaf layers.

svabhāvaśītalaṃ brahma kadalīdalamaṇḍapaḥ | kadalyāmanyatā nāsti yathā patraśateṣvapi || 18 ||

Brahman, cool and calm by its own nature, is like a whole pavilion built of banana tree leaf layers. In the banana tree there is no real difference from one layer to another, even when there are hundreds of leaves.

brahmatattve'nyatā nāsti tathā sargaśateṣvapi | bījameva rasātphullaṃ bhūtvā bījaṃ punarbhave || 19 ||

In the true nature of Brahman there is no real difference, and the same is true even among hundreds of worlds. It is like a seed, out of its own sap it grows into a full plant, and that plant again becomes a seed.

tathā brahma mano bhūtvā bodhād brahma paraṃ bhavet | rasakāraṇakaṃ bījaṃ phalabhāvena jṛmbhate || 20 ||

In the same way, Brahman becomes the mind, and through awakening it becomes the highest Brahman once again. A seed, whose growth is caused by its own sap, unfolds itself into the shape of a fruit.

brahmakāraṇako jīvo jagadrūpeṇa jṛmbhate | rasasya kāraṇaṃ kiṃ syāditi vaktuṃ na yujyate || 21 ||

The living being, whose cause is Brahman, spreads out in the shape of the world, just as the fruit unfolds from the seed. But it makes no sense to ask what causes that first sap.

brahmaṇaḥ kāraṇaṃ kiṃ syāditi vaktuṃ na yujyate | svabhāvo nirviśeṣatvātparo vaktuṃ na yujyate || 22 ||

In the same way, it makes no sense to ask what causes Brahman itself. Since its very nature has no distinctions in it, it makes no sense to say that anything stands beyond it or above it.

nākāraṇe kāraṇādi pare vastvādikāraṇevicāraṇīyaḥ sāro hi kimasāravicāraṇaiḥ || 23 ||

There is no point looking for a cause where there is none. What should truly be examined is the essence within that supreme thing which is the cause of everything. What use is there in examining things that have no essence at all?

bījaṃ jahadbījavapuḥ phalībhūtaṃ vilokyate | brahmājahannijavapuḥ phalaṃ bīje ca saṃsthitam || 24 ||

A seed gives up being a seed and is seen turning into a fruit. But Brahman never gives up its own true form, its fruit stays right there within the seed itself.

bījasyākṛtimatsarvaṃ tenānākṛtimatpadamna yujyate samīkartuṃ tasmānnāstyupamā śive || 25 ||

Everything about a seed has some shape. So that shapeless being cannot be matched with it. That is why there is no comparison for the pure, blessed reality.

svameva jāyate'svābhaṃ na ca tajjāyate'nyadṛk | ato na jātaṃ nājātaṃ viddhi brahma nabho jagat || 26 ||

The self alone gives rise to something that does not look like itself, yet what is born is not really separate from it either. So know that Brahman, the sky, and this world are neither born nor unborn.

dṛśyaṃ paśyansvamātmānaṃ na draṣṭā saṃprapaśyati | prapañcākrāntasaṃvitteḥ kasyodeti nijā sthitiḥ || 27 ||

While looking at things, the seer does not see himself. When the mind is fully caught up in the world, whose own true state can ever show itself?

mṛgatṛṣṇājalabhrāntau satyāṃ kaiva vidagdhatā | vidagdhatāyāṃ satyāṃ tu kaivāsau mṛgatṛṣṇikā || 28 ||

When a person mistakes a mirage for water, where is his cleverness? But when there truly is cleverness, what is that mirage worth?

ākāśaviśado draṣṭā sarvāṅgo'pi na paśyati | netraṃ nijamivātmānaṃ dṛśībhūtamaho bhramaḥ || 29 ||

The seer is as clear as the sky. Even with every part of a body, he does not really see - just as an eye cannot see itself. What a delusion, that he seems to turn into a thing that is seen!

ākāśaviśado draṣṭā sarvāṅgo'pi na paśyati | teṣāṃ nijamivātmānaṃ dṛśībhūtamivābhraṃaḥ || 30 ||

The seer is as clear as the sky. Even with every part of a body, he does not really see. But for those who understand this, even though their own self seems to turn into the world that is seen, there is no delusion in it.

ākāśaviśadaṃ brahma yatnenāpi na labhyate | dṛśye dṛśyatayā dṛṣṭe tvasyalābhaḥ sudūrataḥ || 31 ||

Brahman, clear as the sky, cannot be reached even by great effort. And if what is seen is looked at as nothing more than a thing seen, reaching Brahman stays far, far away.

tādṛgbhāvasvarūpeṇa vinā yatra na dṛśyatetatrāpi dūrodastaiva draṣṭuḥ sūkṣmasya dṛśyatā || 32 ||

Nothing is ever seen unless it carries something of that same nature within it. Even so, the seer, who is very subtle, stays impossible to see; that remains a far-off thing.

dṛśyaṃ ca dṛśyate tena draṣṭā rāma na dṛśyatedraṣṭaiva saṃbhavatyeko natu dṛśyamihāsti hi || 33 ||

Because of that awareness, the thing that is seen gets seen, but the seer himself, Rama, is never seen. Only the seer truly exists, as the one; there is really no separate thing seen here at all.

draṣṭā sarvātmako dṛśye sthitaścetkaiva draṣṭṛtāsarvaśaktimatā rājñā yadyatsaṃpadyate yathā || 34 ||

If the seer, who is the very self of everything, stays fixed inside the thing that is seen, then what does being a seer even mean? Think of it this way: for an all-powerful king, whatever happens, happens exactly as he wills it.

tattathānubhavatyāśu sa evodeti tattathāyathā madhurasollāsaḥ khaṇḍo bhavati bhāsuraḥ || 35 ||

He at once feels it in just that way; he himself rises up as that, in that way, just as the sweet taste of sugarcane juice itself turns into a shining lump of sugar candy.

rasatāmajahaccaiva phalapuṣpalatonnataḥcidullāsastathā jīvo bhūyo bhavati dehakaḥ || 36 ||

The sap, without ever losing its own nature as sap, rises up into fruit, flower, and vine. In the same way, the glow of consciousness, as the living self, turns once again into a body.

cinmātratāṃ tāmajahadeva darśanadṛkmayam | antaḥsvānubhavaścaiva jagatsvapnaṃ prapaśyati || 37 ||

Without ever losing that state of being pure consciousness alone, it turns into seeing itself. And it is this inner experience alone that looks at the world as a dream.

ahaṃtādirase bhaume khaṇḍakatvamivātmani | nānākhaṇḍasahasraughairadvitīyairnijātmanaḥ || 38 ||

Just as sugarcane juice breaks into lumps of sugar candy, so within the self, the feeling of I arises broken into countless thousands of pieces of one's own single self, pieces that, in truth, are not really separate from each other.

yathodeti raso bhaumaścittathodetyasaṃbhramam | cidrasollāsavṛkṣāṇāṃ kacatāmātmanātmani || 39 ||

Just as sap rises up from the earth, so consciousness rises up in that same easy, untroubled way. Among these trees that are consciousness's own sap and delight, it takes shape shining forth, by itself, within itself.

dṛśyaśākhāśatāḍyānāmiha nānto'vagamyate | khaṇḍaḥ pratyekamevāyaṃ yathā rasacamatkṛtim || 40 ||

These are trees rich with hundreds of branches of visible things, and here their end cannot be found. Yet each single lump of candy, just like the rest, is a marvel made of that same sap.

svādayatyevameṣā citpṛthakpaśyati saṃsthitim | yā yodeti yathā yasyā jīvaśakteḥ svasaṃsṛtiḥ || 41 ||

In this way this consciousness tastes each thing, seeing every state as separate. Whichever part of it rises, and in whatever way it rises, that becomes the own life-round of that living being's power.

tāṃ tāṃ tathaiti sā svātmacidrūpabhuvanasthitim | jīvasaṃsṛtayaḥ kāścinpramilanti parasparam || 42 ||

In just that way, this consciousness reaches each and every state of a world made from its own self. Some of these life-journeys of different beings come to blend together with one another.

svayaṃ vihṛtya saṃsāre śāmyanti cirakālataḥ | sūkṣmayā parayā dṛṣṭyā tvaṃ paśya jñānacetasā || 43 ||

After wandering on their own through this world for a very long time, they finally settle down and grow calm. You, look at this with a subtle, higher sight, with a mind full of true knowledge.

jagajvālasahasrāṇi paramāṇvantareṣvapi | citte nabhasi pāṣāṇe jvālāyāmanile jale || 44 ||

Thousands of blazing worlds exist even inside the smallest specks of matter, in the mind, in the sky, in stone, in a flame, in the wind, in water.

santi saṃsāralakṣāṇi tile tailamivākhile | siddhimeti yadā cetastadā jīvo bhaveccitiḥ || 45 ||

Hundreds of thousands of such worlds exist in everything, the way oil exists in a sesame seed. When the mind reaches full accomplishment, then the living self itself becomes pure consciousness.

śuddhā ca sā sarvagatā tena tanmelanaṃ mithaḥ | sarveṣāṃ padmajādīnāṃ svasattābharamarūpakaḥ || 46 ||

That consciousness is pure and present everywhere; because of this, all things secretly blend into one another. The sense that everyone, from Brahma the creator down to the rest, has a separate existence of their own is really just a kind of delusion.

jagaddīrghamahāsvapnaḥ so'yamantaḥ samutthitaḥ | svapnātsvapnāntaraṃ yānti kāścidbhūtaparamparāḥ || 47 ||

This world is one long, great dream, rising up from within. Some lines of living beings pass from one dream into yet another dream.

tenopalambhaḥ kuḍyādāvasau dṛḍhataraḥ sthitaḥ | yadyatra cidbhāvayati tattatrāśu bhavatyalam || 48 ||

Because of this, the feeling that things like a wall are completely real and solid stays very firm. Whatever the mind pictures, and wherever it pictures it, appears there at once, fully formed.

tayā svapne'pi yadṛṣṭaṃ tatkāle satyameva tat | cidaṇorantare santi samastānubhavāṇavaḥ || 49 ||

Even in a dream, whatever it sees is completely real at that moment. Inside one tiny particle of consciousness, all the tiny particles of experience exist.

yathā bījāntare patralatāpuṣpaphalāṇavaḥ | paramāṇujagatyantarmanye citparamāṇavaḥ || 50 ||

Just as a tiny seed already holds the leaf, the vine, the flower, and the fruit inside it, I think that inside a world made of tiny particles, there are particles of consciousness.

deśakālakriyādravyaiḥ svair evāṇubhireva cit | aṇūnanubhavatyantaritarāṇi nasaṃbhavaāt || 51 ||

Consciousness feels things only through its own particles of place, time, action, and object. It never feels what belongs to another, because that cannot happen.

svayaṃ sargasya kacitaḥ svapne cidaṇukhaṇḍakaḥ | brahmādeḥ kīṭaniṣṭhasya dehadṛṣṭyānubhāvitaḥ || 52 ||

A tiny piece of that particle of consciousness itself glows within this dream we call creation. It is felt through whatever body it looks from, whether that body is the great Brahma's or a small worm's.

kacitaṃ kiṃcideveha vastutastu na kiṃcana | svayaṃ satyaṃ svādayante dvaitaṃ citparamāṇavaḥ || 53 ||

What shows up here looks like something, but in truth it is nothing at all. The tiny particles of consciousness are themselves real, yet they taste this as if it were two things, a seer and a seen.

svayaṃ prakacati sphāradehaścidaṇukhaṇḍakaḥ | netrādikusumadvāraiḥ saṃvidāmōdamudgiran || 54 ||

That tiny piece of consciousness shines on its own, its form spreads out wide, and through doorways like flowers, the eyes and the other senses, it lets out the fragrance of its own awareness.

saṃpaśyatitarāṃ kaścidvahīrūpeṇa ciddhaṭaḥ | sarvagatvādanāśitvādṛśyabījasya vai citeḥ || 55 ||

Because consciousness, the seed of everything that is seen, reaches everywhere and is never destroyed, a single vessel of consciousness sees, very clearly, in the form of an outer world.

antarevākhilaṃ kaścitpaśyatyavimalaṃ jagat | tatrātikālakalanādunmajjati nimajjati || 56 ||

Someone sees this whole, unclean world only within himself. There, as long stretches of time pass, it rises up and sinks down, again and again.

svapnātsvapnāntaraṃ tatra tathā paśyanpunaḥpunaḥ | mithyā vaṭeṣu luṭhati śileva śikharacyutā || 57 ||

Seeing again and again like this, moving from one dream into another dream, it tumbles about, unreal, among spreading banyan trees, like a boulder that has broken loose and fallen from a mountain peak.

kecitsaṃmilitāḥ kecidātmanyevābhraṃe sthitāḥ | magnāḥ svasaṃvitprasare sphuranto dehakhaṇḍakāḥ || 58 ||

Some of these little body fragments mix together with others; some stay alone, lost in their own confusion. Flickering into being, they are all sunk inside the spread of their own awareness.

svayamantaḥ prapaśyanti ye jagajjīvavibhramam | taiḥtaiḥ kaiścittataṃ dṛśyamasatsvapnavadāśritam || 59 ||

Those who see within themselves this whirl of world and living being, through each of them the visible world spreads out, and it is unreal, resting on nothing, just like a dream.

sarvātmatvātsvabhāvasya taddṛśyaṃ satyamātmani | sarvagaṃ vidyate yatra tatra sarvamudeti hi || 60 ||

Since its true nature is the very self of everything, this visible world is real within the self. Wherever this all-reaching awareness is present, everything indeed arises there.

jīvāntaḥ pratibhāsasya sarvasya punarantare | jīvakhaṇḍa udetyuccais tasyāntaritaro’pi ca || 61 ||

Inside one living being, within each thing it perceives, another fragment of a living being clearly rises up. And inside that one too, still another one appears.

jīvāntarjāyate jīvastasyāntarapi jīvakaḥ | sarvatra rambhādalavajjīvo jīvāntareva hi || 62 ||

Inside one living being, another living being is born, and inside that one, yet another. It is everywhere like the layers of a banana tree trunk, peel one away and there is just another layer, a living being is always found only inside another living being.

dṛśyabuddhiparāvṛttau samametadanantaram | hemnīva kaṭakāditvaṃ parijñātaṃ vinaśyati || 63 ||

The moment the mind's view turns back from seeing this world as something separate and real, this whole appearance vanishes at once, just as the name bracelet for a piece of gold vanishes the moment you clearly recognise it as simply gold.

vicāro yasya nōdēti kō'haṃ kimidamityalam | tasyāntarn na vimuktō'sau dīrghō jīvajvarabhramaḥ || 64 ||

If someone never truly asks who am I, what is this, then inside him this long fever of feeling like a small separate self never goes away.

vicāraḥ saphalastasya vijñeyō yasya sanmateḥ | dinānudinamāyāti tānavaṃ bhōgagṛdhratā || 65 ||

You can know that someone's search is bearing fruit, and that his mind is turning good, when his hunger for pleasures grows thinner, day by day.

yathā dēhōpayuktaṃ hi karōtyārōgyamauṣadhaṃ | tathēndriyajayē'bhyastē vivēkaḥ phalitō bhavēt || 66 ||

Just as medicine, when used the right way on the body, brings good health, in the same way, when you practice controlling your senses, your power to tell right from wrong begins to bear fruit.

viveko'sti vacasyeva citre'gniriva bhāsvaraḥ | yasya tenāparityaktā duḥkhāyaivāvivekitā || 67 ||

For some people, understanding lives only in their words, like a fire painted in a picture, it looks bright but gives no warmth. Such a person never actually lets go of his lack of understanding, and it stays with him only to cause him suffering.

yathā sparśena pavanaḥ sattāmāyāti no girā | tathecchātānavenaiva viveko'sya vibudhyate || 68 ||

Just as you know the wind is real by feeling it, not just by talking about it, in the same way, someone's understanding is known to be real only when his desires actually grow thinner.

citrāmṛtaṃ nāmṛtameva viddhi citrānalaṃ nānalameva viddhi | citrāṅganā nūnamanaṅganeti vācā vivekastvaviveka eva || 69 ||

Know this: nectar painted in a picture is not real nectar. Fire painted in a picture is not real fire. A woman painted in a picture is surely not a real woman. In the same way, understanding that lives only in words is really no understanding at all.

pūrvaṃ vivekena tanutvameti rāgo'tha vairaṃ ca samūlameva | paścātparikṣīyata eva yatnaḥ sa pāvano yatra vivekitāsti || 70 ||

First, through right understanding, both attachment and hatred grow thin, right down to their root. After that, even the effort to keep trying grows less and less. Wherever this understanding is, everything there becomes pure.
