śrīrāma uvāca | bhagavanbhṛguputrasya pratibhāsānubhūtitḥ | yathaiṣā saphalā jātā tathānyasya na kiṃ bhavet || 1 ||

English

Sri Rama said: O Lord, if this has become fruitful by the realization of the son of Bhrigu, why should it not be so for another?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | iyaṃ prathamamutpannā sā tanurbrahmaṇaḥ padāt | śuddhā jātirbhārgavasya nānyajanmakalaṅkitā || 2 ||

English

Vasistha said: This pure form, which is the first manifestation from the feet of Brahma, is the birth of Bhrigu, not tainted by any other birth.

sarvaiṣaṇānāṃ saṃśāntau śuddhacittasya yā sthitiḥ | tatsatyamucyate saiṣā vimalā cidudāhṛtā || 3 ||

English

The state of a pure mind, where all desires are calmed, is called the true reality, which is pure consciousness.

manonirmalasattvātma yadbhāvayati yādṛśam | tattathāśu bhavatyeva yathāvarto bhavetpayaḥ || 4 ||

English

Whatever a person with a pure mind and pure essence contemplates, that will quickly become a reality, just as milk turns into curd.

yathā bhṛgusutasyaiva vibhramaḥ prothitaḥ svayam | pratyekamapyevameva dṛṣṭānto'tra bhṛgoḥ sutaḥ || 5 ||

English

Just as the confusion of Bhrigu's son arose by itself, similarly, in every case, Bhrigu's son is an example here.

bījasyaṅkurapatrādi svaṃ camatkurute yathā | sarveṣāṃ bhūtasaṅghānāṃ bhramakhṇḍāstathaiva hi || 6 ||

English

Just as a seed sprouts and grows into a plant, similarly, all the fragments of delusion of beings manifest themselves.

yadidaṃ dṛśyate viśvamevamevākhilaṃ jagat | pratyekamuditaṃ mithyā mithyaivāstamupaiti ca || 7 ||

English

This entire universe that is seen is indeed false. Each part of it arises falsely and also sets falsely.

nāstameti nacodeti jagatkiṃcana kasyacit | bhrāntimātramidaṃ māyāmugdheva parijṛmbhate || 8 ||

English

Nothing in this world rises or sets. This is merely an illusion, like a magical trick that bewilders.

yathā saṃpratibhāsasthaḥ svayaṃ saṃsārakhṇḍakaḥ | tathā teṣāṃ sahasrāṇi mithyā dṛṣṭāni santi hi || 9 ||

English

Just as the presently perceived world is a fragment of the cycle of existence, similarly, thousands of such false perceptions exist.

svapnasankalpanagaravyavahārāḥ parasparam | pṛthagyathā na dṛśyante tathaite saṃsṛtibhramāḥ || 10 ||

English

Just as dreams, imaginations, and transactions in a city are not seen separately from each other, similarly, these delusions of the cycle of existence are not seen separately.

evaṃ nagaravṛndāni nabhassaṃkalparūpiṇi | santi tāni na dṛśyante mithyājñānadṛśaṃ vinā || 11 ||

English

Thus, the cities appear as if they are in the sky, they exist but are not visible without the illusion of false knowledge.

piśācayakṣarakṣāṃsi santyevaṃrūpakāṇi ha | saṃkalpamātradehāni sukhaduḥkhamayāni ca || 12 ||

English

Similarly, demons, yakshas, and rakshasas exist in such forms, their bodies are mere thoughts, composed of pleasure and pain.

evameva vayaṃ ceme saṃpannā raghunandana | svasaṃkalpātmakākārā mithyāsatyatvabhāvinaḥ || 13 ||

English

Similarly, we are also endowed with such forms, O Raghunandana, our nature is of our own thoughts, appearing as false reality.

evaṃrūpaiva hi pare vidyate sargasaṃtatiḥ | na vāstavī vastutā tu saṃsthitaivamavastuni || 14 ||

English

Thus, the entire creation exists in such a form, it is not real, but it appears to be real in this unreal state.

pratyekamuditaṃ viśvamevameva mudhaiva hi | vanagulmakarūpeṇa vasantaikaraso yathā || 15 ||

English

Each part of the universe appears distinct, but it is all foolishness, like the forest and bushes appearing as one in the spring season.

prathamo'yaṃ svasaṃkalpaḥ prathāmabhyāgato yathā | tathātiparamārthena dṛṣṭenaittthaṃ vibhāvyate || 16 ||

English

This first self-determination, which has come forth in the beginning, is thus contemplated with the supreme truth.

pratyekamuditaṃ cittaṃ svasvabhāvodarasthitam | idamitthaṃ samārambhaṃ jagatpaśyanvinashyati || 17 ||

English

Every mind that is elevated and established in its own nature, seeing the world in this way, perishes.

pratibhāsavaśādasti nāsti vastvavalokanāt | dīrghasvapno jagajjālamālānaṃ cittadantinaḥ || 18 ||

English

Due to the power of appearance, there is no existence of the object; the world is like a long dream, a garland of illusions for the mind.

citsattaiava jagatsattā jagatsattaiava cittakam | ekābhāvādvayornāśaḥ sa ca satyavicāraṇāt || 19 ||

English

The existence of the world is only the existence of consciousness; the existence of consciousness is only the existence of the world. The non-existence of one leads to the non-existence of the other, and this is realized through true contemplation.

śuddhasya pratibhāso hi satyo bhavati cetasaḥ | pramārjanādiva maṇermalinasyeha yuktitaḥ || 20 ||

English

Indeed, the reflection of the pure is true for the mind, just as the cleaning of a dirty gem makes it shine.

ciramekadṛḍhābhyāsācchuddhirbhavati cetasaḥ| anākrāntasya saṃkalpaiḥ pratibhodeti cetasaḥ || 21 ||

English

By long and firm practice, the mind becomes pure| The mind, unassailed by desires, attains brilliance

suvarṇaṃ na sthitiṃ yāti malavatyāṃśuke yathā| ekā dṛṣṭiḥ sthitiṃ yāti na mlāne cittake tathā || 22 ||

English

Just as gold does not adhere to a dirty cloth, so too a single vision does not adhere to a tainted mind

śrīrāma uvāca| pratibhāsātmani jagatyete kālakriyākramāḥ| sodayāstamayā jātāḥ kathaṃ śukrasya cetasaḥ || 23 ||

English

Sri Rama said: In the self, which is the essence of brilliance, all actions of time occur| How do the rise and fall of the sun occur in the mind of Shukra?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca| yādṛgjagadidaṃ dṛṣṭaṃ śukreṇa pitṛśāstrataḥ| tādṛk kasya sthitaṃ citte mayūrāṇḍe mayūravat || 24 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: Whatever world is seen by Shukra from his father's teachings, that same world is established in his mind like a peacock in a peacock's egg

svabhāvakośasthamidaṃ tadetenakramoditam| bījenāṅkurapatrādilatāpuṣpaphalaṃ yathā || 25 ||

English

This is inherent in the natural sheath, and it is expressed in sequence| Just as a seed grows into a sprout, leaves, vine, flower, and fruit

jīvo yadbāsanābaddhastadevāntaḥ prapaśyati | svarūpaṃ cātra dṛṣṭānto dīrghasvapnastvidaṃ jagat || 26 ||

English

The individual, bound by desires, perceives only that which is within | The nature of this is like a long dream, this world || 26 ||

pratyekamudito rāma nūnaṃ saṃsṛtikhṇḍakaḥ | rātrau sainyanarasvapnajālavatsvātmani sphuṭaḥ || 27 ||

English

Everyone, O Rama, is indeed a fragment of the cycle of birth and death | Like a clear dream of soldiers and people at night in one's own self || 27 ||

śrīrāma uvāca | eṣa saṃsṛtikhṇḍottho mithaḥ sa milati svayam | no vā milati tanme tvaṃ yathāvadvaktumarhasi || 28 ||

English

Sri Rama said | This fragment of the cycle of birth and death, does it merge with itself or not? Please explain this to me accurately || 28 ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | malinaṃ hi mano'vīryaṃ na mithaḥ śleṣam arhati | ayo'yasi ca santapte śuddhe taptaṃ tu līyate || 29 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said | The impure and weak mind does not deserve to merge with itself | Just as impure iron, when heated, merges into pure iron || 29 ||

cittatattvāni śuddhāni saṃmilanti parasparam | ekarūpāṇito yāntyaikyaṃnāvilāni hi || 30 ||

English

The pure elements of the mind merge with each other | Being of the same nature, they attain oneness, not being separate || 30 ||

śuddhirhi cittasya vivāsanatvamabhūtasaṃvedanamekarūpam | tasyāśu śuddhyā bhavati prabuddhastanmātrayuktyā parasangaṃeti || 31 ||

English

Purity of the mind is indeed the state of being free from desires and the realization of the true nature of the self. Through this purity, one becomes awakened and, by the mere attainment of this, one reaches the ultimate union.
