काल उवाच | एतासां भूतजातीनामूर्मीणामिव सागरात् | विविधानां विचित्राणां लतानामिव माधवे || १ ||

kāla uvāca | etāsāṃ bhūtajātīnāmūrmīṇāmiva sāgarāt | vividhānāṃ vicitrāṇāṃ latānāmiva mādhave || 1 ||

English

Time said: Just as various and wonderful beings emerge from the ocean like waves, so do various and wonderful beings emerge in the world like creepers.

हिन्दी

काल ने कहा: जैसे समुद्र से तरंगों की तरह विविध और विचित्र जीव उत्पन्न होते हैं, वैसे ही विविध और विचित्र जीव लताओं की तरह संसार में उत्पन्न होते हैं।

भव्या जितमनोमोहा दृष्टलोकपरावराः | जीवन्मुक्ता भ्रमन्तीह यक्षगन्धर्वकिंनराः || २ ||

bhavyā jitamanomohā dṛṣṭalokaparāvarāḥ | jīvanmuktā bhramantīha yakṣagandharvakiṃnarāḥ || 2 ||

English

Glorious, having conquered the delusions of the mind, having seen the highest and lowest worlds, liberated while living, they wander here as Yakshas, Gandharvas, and Kinnaras.

हिन्दी

शोभायमान, मन के मोह को जीतकर, उच्च और निम्न लोकों को देखकर, जीवनमुक्त होकर, वे यहाँ यक्ष, गन्धर्व और किन्नरों के रूप में विचरण करते हैं।

अन्ये तु काष्ठकुड्याभा मूढाः स्थावरजगमाः | अपरे क्षीणमोहास्ते किं तेषां प्रविचार्यते || ३ ||

anye tu kāṣṭhakuḍyābhā mūḍhāḥ sthāvarajagamāḥ | apare kṣīṇamohāste kiṃ teṣāṃ pravicāryate || 3 ||

English

Others, however, are like pieces of wood or walls, foolish, and immovable beings. What is there to discuss about those whose delusions have diminished?

लोके प्रबुध्यमानानां भूतानामात्मसिद्धये | विहरन्तीह शास्त्राणि कल्पितान्युदितात्मभिः || ४ ||

loke prabudhyamānānāṃ bhūtānāmātmasiddhaye | viharantīha śāstrāṇi kalpitānyuditātmbhiḥ || 4 ||

English

In the world, for the self-realization of awakening beings, scriptures are created and enjoyed by those with illuminated souls.

हिन्दी

संसार में, जाग्रत होते जीवों के आत्मसाक्षात्कार के लिए, शास्त्र प्रज्ञावान लोगों द्वारा रचे और आनंद लिया जाता है।

विलीयते मनोमोहः सच्छास्त्रप्रविचारणात् | नभोविहरणाद्भानोः शार्वरं तिमिरं यथा || ५ ||

vilīyate manomohaḥ sacchāstrapravicāraṇāt | nabhoviharaṇādbhānoḥ śārvaraṃ timiraṃ yathā || 5 ||

English

The delusion of the mind dissolves through the study of true scriptures, just as the darkness of night dissipates with the movement of the sun in the sky.

हिन्दी

मन का मोह सच्चे शास्त्रों के अध्ययन से विलीन हो जाता है, जैसे रात का अंधेरा आकाश में सूर्य की गति से दूर हो जाता है।

अक्षीयमाणं हि मनो मोहायैव न सिद्धये | नीहार इव संछाद्य वेताल इव वल्गति || ७ ||

akṣīyamāṇaṃ hi mano mohāyaiva na siddhaye | nīhāra iva saṃchādya vetāla iva valgati || 7 ||

English

The mind, which is not diminishing, is indeed for delusion and not for perfection. It covers like fog and wanders like a ghost.

हिन्दी

मन, जो घटता नहीं है, वास्तव में भ्रम के लिए है, परिपूर्णता के लिए नहीं। यह कुहरा की तरह ढकता है और भूत की तरह भटकता है।

सर्वेषामेव देहानां सुखदुःखार्थभाजनम् | शरीरं मन एवेह नतु मांसमयं मुने || ८ ||

sarveṣāmeva dehānāṃ sukhaduḥkhārthabhājanam | śarīraṃ mana eva iha natu māṃsamayaṃ mune || 8 ||

English

The body is the receptacle of pleasure, pain, and purpose for all beings. Here, the body is indeed the mind, not just flesh, O sage.

हिन्दी

शरीर सभी प्राणियों के लिए सुख, दुःख और उद्देश्य का आधार है। यहाँ, शरीर वास्तव में मन है, मांस नहीं, हे मुनि।

योऽयं मांसास्थिसंघातो दृश्यते पाञ्चभौतिकः | मनोविकल्पनं विद्धि न देहः परमार्थतः || ९ ||

yo'yaṃ māṃsāsthisamghāto dṛśyate pāñcabhautikaḥ | manovikalpanaṃ viddhi na dehaḥ paramārthatḥ || 9 ||

English

This collection of flesh and bones that is seen as made of the five elements, know it as a mental construct, not the body in reality.

हिन्दी

यह मांस और हड्डियों का समूह जो पाँच भूतों से बना दिखाई देता है, इसे मानसिक निर्माण समझो, वास्तविक शरीर नहीं।

मनःशरीरेण तव पुत्रोऽयं कृतवान्मुने | तदेव प्राप्तवानाशु वयं नात्रापराधिनः || १० ||

manaḥśarīreṇa tava putro'yaṃ kṛtavānmune | tadeva prāptavānāśu vayaṃ nātrāparādhinaḥ || 10 ||

English

With the mental body, your son has done this, O sage. He has quickly attained that very state; we are not guilty here.

हिन्दी

मानसिक शरीर से, आपका पुत्र यह काम किया है, हे मुनि। वह तुरंत उसी अवस्था को प्राप्त हो गया; हम यहाँ दोषी नहीं हैं।

स्वया वासनया लोको यद्यत्कर्म करोति यः | स तथैव तदाप्नोति नेतरस्येह कर्तृता || ११ ||

svayā vāsanayā loko yadyatkarma karoti yaḥ | sa tathaiva tadāpnoti netarasyeha kartṛtā || 11 ||

English

By one's own inclinations, whatever action one performs in the world, one attains the results accordingly. There is no doership of another here.

हिन्दी

अपनी वासना से, जो भी कार्य कोई इस लोक में करता है, वह उसके अनुसार परिणाम प्राप्त करता है। यहाँ किसी दूसरे की कर्तापन नहीं है।

स्वानुसंहितमन्तर्यन्मनोवासनया स्वयाको नाम भुवनेशोऽस्ति तत्कर्तुं यस्य शक्तता || १२ ||

svānusaṃhitamantaryanmanovāsanayā svayāko nāma bhuvaneśo'sti tatkartuṃ yasya śaktatā || 12 ||

English

There is a ruler of the world named Svayaka, who is internally connected with the mind's desires. He has the power to do that which is in accordance with those desires.

हिन्दी

मन की वासनाओं से आन्तरिक रूप से जुड़ा एक भुवनेश है जिसका नाम स्वयाक है। उसके पास उन वासनाओं के अनुसार कार्य करने की शक्ति है।

ये सर्गा नरकाभोगा या जन्ममरणैषणाःस्वप्नमनोमननेनेदं स निष्पन्दोऽपि दुःखदः || १३ ||

ye sargā narakābhogā yā janmamaraṇaiṣaṇāḥsvapnamanomananenedaṃ sa niṣpando'pi duḥkhadaḥ || 13 ||

English

The creations of hellish enjoyments and the desires for birth and death, all these are like a dream, a mere thought. Even the cessation of these is painful.

हिन्दी

नरक के भोगों की सृष्टि और जन्म-मृत्यु की इच्छाएँ, ये सब एक स्वप्न के समान हैं, एक विचार मात्र। इनका अन्त भी दुःखदायक है।

बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन शब्दसंग्रहकारिणाउत्तिष्ठ भगवन्यामो यत्र ते तनयः स्थितः || १४ ||

bahunātra kimuktena śabdasaṃgrahakāriṇāuttiṣṭha bhagavanyāmo yatra te tanayaḥ sthitaḥ || 14 ||

English

What more needs to be said here? O Lord, arise! Your son is there.

हिन्दी

यहाँ और क्या कहना है? हे भगवान, उठो! तुम्हारा पुत्र वहाँ है।

तत्प्राणपवनश्चित्तान्मुक्त इन्द्वंशुवत्फलमवश्यायतया भूत्वा वीर्यं तेनान्तरास्थितः || १६ ||

tatprāṇapavanaścittānmukta indvaṃśuvatphalamavaśyāyatayā bhūtvā vīryaṃ tenāntarāsthitaḥ || 16 ||

English

Having released the life-breath and mind, and having become inevitable like the fruit of the moon's rays, the power remained within it.

हिन्दी

प्राण और मन को छोड़कर, और चंद्र किरणों के फल की तरह अनिवार्य होकर, शक्ति उसके अंदर रही।

इत्युक्त्वा भगवान्कालो हसन्निव जगद्गतिम्हस्ताद्धस्तेन जग्राह भृगुमिन्दुमिवांशुमान् || १७ ||

ityuktvā bhagavānkālo hasanniva jagadgatimhastāddhastena jagrāha bhṛgumindumivāṃśumān || 17 ||

English

Having said this, Lord Kala, as if smiling, took the course of the world from hand to hand, like Bhrigu taking the moon's rays.

हिन्दी

ऐसा कहकर, भगवान् काल, मानो मुस्कुराते हुए, हाथ से हाथ में जगत की गति ले ली, जैसे भृगु चंद्रमा की किरणों को लेते हैं।

अहो नु चित्रा नियतेर्व्यवस्थेति वदंछनैः| भगवान्भृगुरुत्तस्थावुदयाद्रेर्यथा रविः || १८ ||

aho nu citrā niyatervyavastheti vadaṃchanaiḥ| bhagavānbhṛguruttasthāvudayādreryathā raviḥ || 18 ||

English

Oh, how wonderful is the arrangement of destiny! Thus spoke the sages. Bhagavan Bhrigu rose like the sun from the eastern mountain.

हिन्दी

अहो, नियति की कितनी चित्रमयी व्यवस्था है! ऐसा कहते हुए मुनियों ने कहा| भगवान भृगु उदय होने वाले पर्वत से सूर्य की तरह उठे।

तेजोनिधी ह सममङ्ग समुत्थितौ तौ भातस्तदाम्बरतले सतमालजाले| तुल्योदयाविव नभस्यमले विहर्तुमभ्युत्थितौ सजलदौ सकलेन्दुसूर्यौ || १९ ||

tejonidhī ha samamaṅga samutthitau tau bhātastadāmbaratale satamālajāle| tulyodayāviva nabhasyamale vihartumabhyutthitau sajaladau sakalendusūryau || 19 ||

English

Both of them, repositories of brilliance, rose together, appearing in the sky adorned with stars. They rose like the sun and moon with clouds, as if to roam in the clear sky.

हिन्दी

दोनों तेज के भंडार, एक साथ उठे, तारों से सजे आकाश में प्रकट हुए| वे बादलों के साथ सूर्य और चंद्रमा की तरह उठे, मानो स्वच्छ आकाश में विचरण करने के लिए।

श्रीवाल्मीकिरुवाच| इत्युक्तवत्यथ मुनौ दिवसो जगाम सायतनाय विधयेऽस्तमिनो जगाम| स्नातुं सभा कृतनमस्करणा जगाम श्यामाक्षये रविकरैश्च सहाजगाम || २० ||

śrīvālmīkiruvāca| ityuktavatyatha munau divaso jagāma sāyatanāya vidhaye'stamino jagāma| snātuṃ sabhā kṛtanamaskarṇā jagāma śyāmākṣaye ravikaraiśca sahājagāma || 20 ||

English

Sri Valmiki said: Thus speaking, the sage went to perform the evening rituals as the day ended. The assembly, having paid their respects, went to bathe in the dark-eyed one (river) along with the rays of the sun.

हिन्दी

श्री वाल्मीकि ने कहा: ऐसा कहते हुए, मुनि शाम के विधि करने के लिए गए जैसे दिन समाप्त हुआ| सभा, जो प्रणाम कर चुकी थी, काली आँखों वाली (नदी) में स्नान करने के लिए सूर्य की किरणों के साथ गई।
