Vasistha said: O Rama, there are indeed three kinds of spaces: the space of the mind, the space of consciousness, and the physical space.

That which pervades both the external and internal, revealing existence and non-existence, is called the conscious space, pervading all beings.

English

That which is the best and beneficial for all beings, which is the essence of time and measurement, by which everything is pervaded, is called the mental space.

That which has an unbroken form with the enjoyment of the ten directions and circles, that which is the self of all beings, that space which is the support of wind, water, etc., is called the space.

English

The two spaces, physical and mental, arise from the power of the conscious space. Indeed, consciousness is the cause of all actions, just as the day is the cause of all activities.

jaḍo'smi na jaḍo'smīti niścayo malinaścitaḥ | yastadeva mano viddhi tenākāśādi bhāvyate || 20 ||

English

The conviction 'I am inert, I am not inert' is the impure consciousness. Know that to be the mind, by which the space and other elements are conceived.

English

The concept of the three types of space is imagined for the sake of instruction for those who are not enlightened, but not for those who are enlightened.

English

There is only one supreme Brahman, which pervades everything and is eternal, free from all parts and divisions.

dvaitādvaitasamudbhedairvākyasaṃdarbhagarbhitaiḥ | upadeśyata evājño na prabuddhaḥ kathaṃcana || 23 ||

English

The ignorant are taught through the context of sentences that arise from the distinctions of duality and non-duality, but the enlightened are not taught in this way.

English

As long as you are not enlightened, you are taught the concept of the three types of space for the purpose of realization.

ākāśacittākāśādyāścidākāśakalaṅkitāt | prasūtā dāvadahanādyathā marumarīcayaḥ || 25 ||

English

Just as mirages arise from the heat of the desert, the various types of space arise from the pure consciousness, adorned with the space of the mind.

cittatvamasy malinasya cidātmakasya tattvasya dṛśyata idaṃ nanu bodhahīnaiḥ | śuktau yathā rajatatā natu bodhavadbhirmourkhyeṇa bandha iha bodhabalena mokṣaḥ || 27 ||

English

The nature of this impure, consciousness-filled reality is perceived by those lacking awareness, like seeing silver in a shell. Here, bondage is due to ignorance, and liberation is through the power of awareness.
