श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच मनो हि भावनामात्रं भावना स्पन्दधर्मिणी क्रिया तद्भावितारूपं फलं सर्वोऽनुधावति || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca mano hi bhāvanāmātraṃ bhāvanā spandadharmiṇī kriyā tadbhāvitārūpaṃ phalaṃ sarvo'nudhāvati || 1 ||

English

Vasishtha said: Indeed, the mind is merely the act of contemplation. Contemplation is the nature of vibration. Action is the form of that contemplation, and everyone pursues its result.

हिन्दी

श्रीवसिष्ठ ने कहा: निश्चय ही, मन केवल भावना है। भावना स्पन्द का धर्म है। क्रिया उस भावना का रूप है, और सब उसके फल के पीछे भागते हैं।

श्रीराम उवाच विस्तरेण मम ब्रह्मन् जडस्याप्यजडाकृतेः रूपमारूढसंकल्पं मनसो वक्तुमर्हसि || २ ||

śrīrāma uvāca vistareṇa mama brahman jaḍasyāpyajaḍākṛteḥ rūpamārūḍhasaṃkalpaṃ manaso vaktumarhasi || 2 ||

English

Rama said: O Brahman, please explain to me in detail the nature of the mind, which is inert yet appears to be active, and is endowed with resolute intentions.

हिन्दी

श्रीराम ने कहा: हे ब्रह्मन्, मुझे विस्तार से बताएँ जड़ होने पर भी अजड़ दिखने वाले मन का रूप, जो दृढ़ संकल्पों से भरा हुआ है।

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच अनन्तस्यात्मतत्त्वस्य सर्वशक्तेर्महात्मनः संकल्पशक्ति रचितं यद्रूपं तन्मनो विदुः || ३ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca anantasyātmatattvasya sarvaśaktermahātmanaḥ saṃkalpaśakti racitaṃ yadrūpaṃ tanmano viduḥ || 3 ||

English

Vasishtha said: The mind is known to be the form created by the power of intention of the infinite, all-powerful, supreme Self.

हिन्दी

श्रीवसिष्ठ ने कहा: मन को अनंत, सर्वशक्तिमान, परमात्मा की संकल्प शक्ति द्वारा रचित रूप माना जाता है।

भावः सदसतोर्मध्ये नृणां चलति यश्चलः कलनोन्मुखतां यातस्तद्रूपं मनसो विदुः || ४ ||

bhāvaḥ sadasatormadhye nṛṇāṃ calati yaścalaḥ kalanonmukhatāṃ yātastadrūpaṃ manaso viduḥ || 4 ||

English

The state of being is between existence and non-existence, and it moves among people. That which is moving and has attained the state of vibration is known as the mind.

हिन्दी

भाव अस्तित्व और अनस्तित्व के बीच है, और यह लोगों में चलता है। जो चलता है और स्पन्दन की स्थिति को प्राप्त होता है, वह मन कहलाता है।

नाहं वेदावभासात्मा कुर्वाणोऽस्मीति निश्चयः तस्मादेकान्तकलनस्तद्रूपं मनसो विदुः || ५ ||

nāhaṃ vedāvabhāsātmā kurvāṇo'smīti niścayaḥ tasmādekāntakalanastadrūpaṃ manaso viduḥ || 5 ||

English

I am not the knower of the illumination, this is the certainty. Therefore, the mind is known to be that which is completely engaged in vibration.

हिन्दी

मैं प्रकाश का ज्ञाता नहीं हूँ, यह निश्चय है। इसलिए, मन को उस रूप में जाना जाता है जो पूरी तरह से स्पन्दन में लगा हुआ है।

कल्पनात्मिकया कर्मशक्त्या विरहितं मनः | न संभवति लोकेऽस्मिन्गुणहीनो गुणी यथा || ६ ||

kalpanātmikayā karmaśaktyā virahitaṃ manaḥ | na saṃbhavati loke'smin guṇahīno guṇī yathā || 6 ||

English

The mind devoid of the power of imaginative action does not exist in this world, just as a person without qualities is not a person of quality.

हिन्दी

कल्पनात्मक कर्म शक्ति से रहित मन इस लोक में नहीं होता, जैसे गुणहीन व्यक्ति गुणी नहीं होता।

यथा वह्न्यौष्ण्ययोः सत्ता न संभवति भिन्नयोः | तथैव कर्ममनसोस्तथात्ममनसोरपि || ७ ||

yathā vahnyauṣṇyayoḥ sattā na saṃbhavati bhinnayoḥ | tathaiva karmamanasostathātmamanasorapi || 7 ||

English

Just as the existence of fire and heat cannot be separated, similarly, the existence of action and mind, as well as the self and mind, cannot be separated.

हिन्दी

जैसे अग्नि और उष्णता का अस्तित्व अलग नहीं हो सकता, वैसे ही कर्म और मन, तथा आत्मा और मन का अस्तित्व अलग नहीं हो सकता।

स्वेनैव चित्तरूपेण कर्मणा फलधर्मिणा | संकल्पैकशरीरेण नानाविस्तरशालिना || ८ ||

svenaiva cittarūpeṇa karmaṇā phaladharmiṇā | saṃkalpaikśarīreṇa nānāvistaraśālinā || 8 ||

English

By one's own form of consciousness, through action that bears fruit, with a body of single resolve, and with various expansions.

हिन्दी

अपने ही चित्त रूप से, फल देने वाले कर्म द्वारा, एक संकल्प के शरीर से, और विविध विस्तारों से।

इदं ततमनेकात्म मायामयमकारणम् | विश्वं विगतविन्यासं वासनाकल्पनाकुलम् || ९ ||

idaṃ tatamanekātma māyāmayamakāraṇam | viśvaṃ vigatavinyāsaṃ vāsanākalpanākulam || 9 ||

English

This universe, pervaded by that one spirit, is illusory and without cause, devoid of arrangement, and disturbed by the imaginings of desires.

हिन्दी

यह विश्व, उस एक आत्मा से व्याप्त, मायामय और अकारण है, व्यवस्था से रहित, और इच्छाओं की कल्पनाओं से व्याकुल है।

या येन वासना यत्र सतेवारोपिता यथा | सा तेन फलसूस्तत्र तदेव प्राप्यते तथा || १० ||

yā yena vāsanā yatra satevāropitā yathā | sā tena phalasūs tatra tadeva prāpyate tathā || 10 ||

English

Whatever desire is implanted in a place, it bears fruit there, and that very thing is obtained accordingly.

हिन्दी

जो भी इच्छा किसी स्थान पर रोपित की जाती है, वह वहाँ फल देती है, और उसी चीज को उसी तरह प्राप्त किया जाता है।

कर्म बीजं मनःस्पन्दः कथ्यतेऽथानुभूयते | क्रियास्तु विविधास्तस्य शाखाश्चित्रफलास्तरोः || ११ ||

karma bījaṃ manaḥspandaḥ kathyate'thānubhūyate | kriyāstu vividhāstasya śākhāścitraphalāstaroḥ || 11 ||

English

Action is the seed, the movement of the mind is said to be experienced | Various actions are its branches, and diverse fruits are its leaves.

हिन्दी

कर्म बीज है, मन की गतिविधि कही जाती है और अनुभव की जाती है | उसकी शाखाएँ विविध क्रियाएँ हैं और चित्रफल उसके पत्ते हैं।

मनो यदनुसंधत्ते तत्कर्मेन्द्रियवृत्तयः | सर्वाः संपादयन्त्येतास्तस्मात्कर्म मनः स्मृतम् || १२ ||

mano yadanusaṃdhattetatkarmeṃdriyavṛttayaḥ | sarvāḥ saṃpādayantyetāstasmātkarma manaḥ smṛtam || 12 ||

English

Whatever the mind dwells upon, those are the actions of the senses | All these accomplish, therefore action is remembered as the mind.

हिन्दी

मन जिस पर ध्यान लगाता है, वही इंद्रियों के कर्म हैं | सभी ये संपन्न करते हैं, इसलिए कर्म मन के रूप में स्मरण किया जाता है।

मनो बुद्धिरहंकारश्चित्तं कर्माथ कल्पना | संसृतिर्वासना विद्या प्रयत्नः स्मृतिरेव च || १३ ||

mano buddhirahaṃkāraścittaṃ karmātha kalpanā | saṃsṛtirvāsanā vidyā prayatnaḥ smṛtireva ca || 13 ||

English

Mind, intellect, ego, consciousness, action, imagination, transmigration, desire, knowledge, effort, and memory.

हिन्दी

मन, बुद्धि, अहंकार, चित्त, कर्म, कल्पना, संसृति, वासना, विद्या, प्रयत्न और स्मृति।

इन्द्रियं प्रकृतिर्माया क्रिया चेतीतरा अपि | चित्राः शब्दोक्तयो ब्रह्मन्संसारभ्रमहेतवः || १४ ||

indriyaṃ prakṛtirmāyā kriyā cetītarā api | citrāḥ śabdoktayo brahman saṃsārabhramahetavaḥ || 14 ||

English

The senses, nature, illusion, action, and others are also variously described, O Brahman, as causes of the delusion of the world.

हिन्दी

इंद्रियाँ, प्रकृति, माया, क्रिया और अन्य भी विविध रूप से वर्णित हैं, हे ब्रह्मन्, संसार के भ्रम के कारण के रूप में।

काकतालीययोगेन त्यक्तस्फारदृगाकृतेः | चितेश्चेत्यानुपातिन्याः कृताः पर्यायवृत्तयः || १५ ||

kākatālīyayogena tyaktasphāradṛgākṛteḥ | citeścetyānupātinyāḥ kṛtāḥ paryāyavṛttayaḥ || 15 ||

English

By the union of the crow and the palm tree, the abandonment of the expanded vision of the form | The movements of the consciousness are made by the proximity of the perceiver.

हिन्दी

काक और ताड़ के योग से, रूप के विस्तृत दृष्टिकोण का त्याग | देखने वाले की निकटता से चेतना की गतिविधियाँ होती हैं।

श्रीराम उवाच | परायाः संविदो ब्रह्मन्नेताः पर्यायवृत्तयः | कल्प्यमानविचित्रार्थाः कथं रूढिमुपागताः || १६ ||

śrīrāma uvāca | parāyāḥ saṃvido brahmannetāḥ paryāyavṛttayaḥ | kalpyamānavicitrārthāḥ kathaṃ rūḍhimupāgatāḥ || 16 ||

English

Sri Rama said: O Brahman, how have these various imagined meanings of the highest knowledge, which are constantly changing, become established?

हिन्दी

श्री राम ने कहा: हे ब्रह्मन्, ये परिवर्तनशील कल्पित अर्थ, जो उच्चतम ज्ञान के हैं, कैसे स्थापित हो गए हैं?

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | गतेव सकलङ्कत्वं कदाचित्कल्पनात्मकम् | उन्मेषरूपिणी नाना तदैव हि मनःस्थिता || १७ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | gateva sakalaṅkatvaṃ kadācitkalpanātmakam | unmeṣarūpiṇī nānā tadaiva hi manaḥsthitā || 17 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: Just as all defects are imagined, so too are the various forms of the mind's manifestations.

हिन्दी

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: जैसे सभी दोष कल्पना से उत्पन्न होते हैं, वैसे ही मन के विविध रूप भी कल्पना से ही उत्पन्न होते हैं।

भावनामनुसंधानं यदा निश्चित्य संस्थिता | तदैषा प्रोच्यते बुद्धिरियत्ताग्रहणक्षमा || १८ ||

bhāvanāmanusaṃdhānaṃ yadā niścitya saṃsthitā | tadaiṣā procayate buddhiriya ttāgrahṇakṣamā || 18 ||

English

When the mind is firmly established in the contemplation of a particular idea, it is then called intellect, capable of grasping the extent of that idea.

हिन्दी

जब मन किसी विशेष विचार के ध्यान में दृढ़ता से स्थित होता है, तब उसे बुद्धि कहते हैं, जो उस विचार की सीमा को समझने में सक्षम होती है।

यदा मिथ्याभिमानेन सत्तां कल्पयति स्वयम् | अहंकाराभिमानेन प्रोच्यते भवबन्धनी || १९ ||

yadā mithyābhimānena sattāṃ kalpayati svayam | ahaṃkārābhimānena procayate bhavabandhanī || 19 ||

English

When one, through false ego, imagines oneself to have existence, it is then called the bondage of worldly existence.

हिन्दी

जब कोई झूठे अहंकार से अपने आप को अस्तित्व में कल्पित करता है, तब उसे संसारिक बंधन कहते हैं।

इदं त्यक्त्वेदमायाति बालवत्पेलवा यदा | विचारं संपरित्यज्य तदा सा चित्तमुच्यते || २० ||

idaṃ tyaktvedamāyāti bālavatpelavā yadā | vicāraṃ saṃparityajya tadā sā cittamucyate || 20 ||

English

When one, like a child, abandons one thing and takes up another, leaving behind thoughtful consideration, it is then called the mind.

हिन्दी

जब कोई, बच्चे की तरह, एक चीज को छोड़कर दूसरी चीज को ग्रहण करता है, सोच-विचार को छोड़कर, तब उसे मन कहते हैं।

यदा स्पन्दैकधर्मत्वात्कर्तुर्या शून्यशंसिनी | आधावति स्पन्दफलं तदा कर्मेत्युदाहृता || २१ ||

yadā spandaiakadharmatvātkarturyā śūnyaśaṃsinī | ādhāvati spandaphalaṃ tadā karmeytyudāhṛtā || 21 ||

English

When the action of the doer, which is characterized by a single vibration, reaches the result of vibration, then it is called karma.

हिन्दी

जब कर्ता की एक स्पंद के धर्म से युक्त क्रिया स्पंद के फल को प्राप्त होती है, तब उसे कर्म कहते हैं।

काकतालीययोगेन त्यक्त्वैकघननिश्चयम् | यदेहितं कल्पयति भावं तेनेह कल्पना || २२ ||

kākatālīyayogena tyaktvaiakaghananiścayam | yadehitaṃ kalpayati bhāvaṃ tenaiha kalpanā || 22 ||

English

By the method of the crow and the palm tree, abandoning the single solid determination, whatever is imagined here, that is imagination.

हिन्दी

कौए और ताड़ के वृक्ष के योग से, एक घन निश्चय को त्यागकर, जो भी यहाँ कल्पना की जाती है, वही कल्पना है।

पूर्वदृष्टमदृष्टं वा प्राग्दृष्टमिति निश्चयैः | यदैवेहां विधत्तेऽन्तस्तदा स्मृतिरुदाहृता || २३ ||

pūrvadṛṣṭamadṛṣṭaṃ vā prāgdṛṣṭamiti niścayaiḥ | yadaivehāṃ vidhatte'ntastadā smṛtirudāhṛtā || 23 ||

English

Whether seen before or unseen, it is determined as previously seen by determinations. When it is placed within here, then it is called memory.

हिन्दी

चाहे पहले देखा हो या नहीं, यह पहले देखा हुआ माना जाता है निश्चयों से। जब यह यहाँ अंदर रखा जाता है, तब इसे स्मृति कहा जाता है।

यदा पदार्थशक्तीनां संभुक्तानामिवाम्बरे | वसत्यस्तमितान्येहा वासनेति तदोच्यते || २४ ||

yadā padārthaśaktīnāṃ saṃbhaktānāmivāmbare | vasatya'stamitānyehā vāsanāiti tadocayate || 24 ||

English

When the powers of objects, as if enjoyed in the sky, reside here as if set, then it is called impression.

हिन्दी

जब वस्तुओं की शक्तियाँ, जैसे आकाश में भोगी जाती हैं, यहाँ जैसे स्थापित होती हैं, तब इसे वासना कहा जाता है।

अस्त्यात्मतत्त्वं विमलं द्वितीया दृष्टिरङ्किता | जाता ह्यविद्यमानैव तदा विद्येति कथ्यते || २५ ||

astyātmatattvaṃ vimalaṃ dvitīyā dṛṣṭiraṅkitā | jātā hyavidyamānaiva tadā vidyeti kathyate || 25 ||

English

There exists the pure essence of the self, the second sight is marked. Born indeed as non-existent, then it is called knowledge.

हिन्दी

आत्मा का शुद्ध तत्त्व है, दूसरी दृष्टि चिह्नित है। वास्तव में अविद्यमान के रूप में जन्म लेती है, तब इसे विद्या कहा जाता है।

स्फुरत्यात्मविनाशाय विस्मारयति तत्पदम् | मिथ्याविकल्पजालेन तन्मलं परिकल्प्यते || २६ ||

sphuratyātmavināśāya vismārayati tatpadam | mithyāvikalpajālena tanmalaṃ parikalpyate || 26 ||

English

The self shines for its own destruction, it makes one forget that state | By the web of false imagination, that impurity is imagined || 26 ||

हिन्दी

आत्मा अपने विनाश के लिए चमकता है, वह उस स्थिति को भूलने के लिए करता है | मिथ्या कल्पना के जाल से, वह दूषितता कल्पित होती है || २६ ||

श्रुत्वा स्पृष्ट्वा च दृष्ट्वा च भुक्त्वा घ्रात्वा विमृश्य च | इन्द्रमानन्दयत्येषा तेनेन्द्रियमिति स्मृतम् || २७ ||

śrutvā spṛṣṭvā ca dṛṣṭvā ca bhuktvā ghrātvā vimṛśya ca | indramānandayatyeṣā tenendriyamiti smṛtam || 27 ||

English

By hearing, touching, seeing, tasting, smelling, and reflecting | This gives pleasure to Indra, hence it is remembered as the sense organ || 27 ||

हिन्दी

सुनकर, छूकर, देखकर, स्वाद लेकर, सूंघकर, और सोचकर | यह इंद्र को आनंद देता है, इसलिए यह इंद्रिय के रूप में याद किया जाता है || २७ ||

सर्वस्य दृश्यजालस्य परमात्मन्यलक्षिते | प्रकृतत्वेन भावानां लोके प्रकृतिरुच्यते || २८ ||

sarvasya dṛśyajālasya paramātmanyalakṣite | prakṛtatvena bhāvānāṃ loke prakṛtirucyate || 28 ||

English

When all the visible world is unseen in the Supreme Self | In the world, the nature of beings is called Prakriti || 28 ||

हिन्दी

जब सारा दृश्य जगत परमात्मा में अदृश्य हो जाता है | तब लोक में भावों की प्रकृति को प्रकृति कहा जाता है || २८ ||

सदसत्तां नयत्याशु सत्तां वा सत्त्वमञ्जसा | सत्तासत्ताविकल्पोऽयं तेन मायेति कथ्यते || २९ ||

sadasattāṃ nayatyāśu sattāṃ vā sattvamañjasā | sattāsattāvikalpo'yaṃ tena māyeti kathyate || 29 ||

English

It quickly leads to the state of existence or non-existence | This concept of existence and non-existence is called Māyā || 29 ||

हिन्दी

यह तुरंत अस्तित्व या अनस्तित्व की स्थिति को ले जाता है | यह अस्तित्व और अनस्तित्व का विचार माया कहलाता है || २९ ||

दर्शनश्रवणस्पर्शरसनघ्राणकर्मभिः | क्रियेति कथ्यते लोके कार्यकारणतां गता || ३० ||

darśanaśravaṇasparśarasanaghrāṇakarmabhiḥ | kriyeti kathyate loke kāryakāraṇatāṃ gatā || 30 ||

English

By seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, smelling, and actions | It is called action in the world, having attained the state of cause and effect || 30 ||

हिन्दी

देखने, सुनने, छूने, स्वाद लेने, सूंघने, और कर्मों से | यह लोक में क्रिया कहलाता है, कारण और परिणाम की स्थिति को प्राप्त होने पर || ३० ||

चितेश्चेत्यानुपातिन्या गतायाः सकलङ्कताम् | प्रस्फुरद्रूपधर्मिण्या एताः पर्यायवृत्तयः || ३१ ||

citeścetyānupātinyā gatāyāḥ sakalaṅkatām | prasphuradrūpadharmiṇyā etāḥ paryāyavṛttayaḥ || 31 ||

English

These are the cyclic transformations of the mind, which has attained the state of being fully blemished due to its association with the objects of consciousness.

हिन्दी

ये मन के चक्रीय परिवर्तन हैं, जो चेतना के विषयों से संबंधित होने के कारण पूरी तरह से दोषपूर्ण अवस्था को प्राप्त हुआ है।

चित्ततामुपयाताया गतायाः प्रकृतं पदम् | स्वैरेव संकल्पशतैर्भृशं रूढिमुपागताः || ३२ ||

cittatāmupayātāyā gatāyāḥ prakṛtaṃ padam | svairēva saṃkalpaśatairbhṛśaṃ rūḍhimupāgatāḥ || 32 ||

English

Having attained the state of mind, it has reached its natural state through its own multitude of resolutions, firmly established.

हिन्दी

मन की अवस्था प्राप्त करने के बाद, यह अपने स्वयं के विचारों के माध्यम से अपने प्राकृतिक स्थान पर दृढ़ता से स्थापित हो गया है।

चेतनीयकलङ्काङ्काज्जाड्यजालानुपातिनी | संख्याविभागकलना स्ववैकल्याकुलेव चित् || ३३ ||

cetanīyakalaṅkāṅkājjāḍyajālānupātinī | saṃkhyāvibhāgakalanā svavaikalyākuleva cit || 33 ||

English

The mind, following the blemishes of consciousness, is entangled in the web of inertia, and is confused by the calculations of numbers and divisions, as if afflicted by its own perplexity.

हिन्दी

मन, चेतना के दोषों का अनुसरण करते हुए, जड़ता के जाल में उलझा हुआ है, और संख्याओं और विभाजनों के गणना से भ्रमित है, जैसे कि अपनी ही उलझन से पीड़ित है।

जीव इत्युच्यते लोके मन इत्यपि कथ्यते | चित्तमित्युच्यते सैव बुद्धिरित्युच्यते तथा || ३४ ||

jīva ityucyate loke mana ityapi kathyate | cittamityucyate saiva buddhiritiucyate tathā || 34 ||

English

In the world, it is called jīva; it is also said to be the mind. It is called citta, and it is also called buddhi.

दुनिया में, इसे जीव कहा जाता है; इसे मन भी कहा जाता है। इसे चित्त कहा जाता है, और इसे बुद्धि भी कहा जाता है।

नानासंकल्पकलिलं पर्यायनिचयं बुधाः | वदन्त्यस्याः कलङ्किन्याश्च्युतायाः परमात्मनः || ३५ ||

nānāsaṃkalpakalilaṃ paryāyanicayaṃ budhāḥ | vadantyasyāḥ kalaṅkinyāścyutāyāḥ paramātmanaḥ || 35 ||

English

The wise describe the various resolutions as the accumulation of cycles of the blemished one who has fallen from the Supreme Self.

हिन्दी

बुद्धिमान लोग विभिन्न संकल्पों को उस दोषपूर्ण व्यक्ति के चक्रीय संचय के रूप में वर्णित करते हैं, जो परमात्मा से गिर गया है।

श्रीराम उवाच | मनः किं स्याज्जडं ब्रह्मंस्तथा वापि च चेतनम् | इत्येको मम तत्त्वज्ञ निश्चयोऽन्तर्न जायते || ३६ ||

śrīrāma uvāca | manaḥ kiṃ syājjadaṃ brahmaṃstathā vāpi ca cetanam | ityeko mama tattvajña niścayo'ntarna jāyate || 36 ||

English

Sri Rama said: Is the mind inert or conscious? This is my only doubt, O knower of truth, I have no other certainty.

हिन्दी

श्री राम ने कहा: मन जड़ है या चेतन? यह मेरा एकमात्र संदेह है, हे तत्वज्ञ, मुझे और कोई निश्चय नहीं है।

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | मनो हि न जडं राम नापि चेतनतां गतम् | म्लानाऽजडा तदा दृष्टिर्मन इत्येव कथ्यते || ३७ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | mano hi na jadaṃ rāma nāpi cetanatāṃ gatam | mlānā'jada tadā dṛṣṭirmama ityeva kathyate || 37 ||

English

Vasistha said: O Rama, the mind is neither inert nor conscious. It is said to be a faded, non-inert vision.

हिन्दी

The form that appears in the middle of existence and non-existence, which is clear and unobstructed, is called the cause of the world, and that is the mind.

English

That which is imagined as a swinging form between the views of inert and non-inert, and which is of a faded nature from the mind, is called the mind.

चिन्निःस्पन्दो हि मलिनः कलङ्कविकलान्तरम् | मन इत्युच्यते राम न जडं न च चिन्मयम् || ४१ ||
